Smell - what is her scent? Lyra is comforting like coconut and marshmallows.

Touch - What texture represents her? Lyra is soft, like sun-kissed skin in summer or a fluffy scarf in winter.

Sound - What sound is she? Lyra is peaceful, like birdsong in summer or those whispering breezes in winter.

Sight - Elsie's birthday is December 15th, making her a Sagittarius. Like her sign, Elsie is more than just human. Her colouring complexion wise is very fair, but with a healthy, rosy glow. I associate Elsie with a deep, dark shade of blue. Everything about Elsie calls to mind a deep, old well of history, or something as vast and powerful as the sea.

Taste - Elsie has a huge sweet tooth. Her favourite thing to eat is pastries, in particular maple bars. But I often think of her as dark chocolate. A fancy bar of dark chocolate with nuts and berries in it. The kind you'd get in a nice Christmas (or Winter Star, lol) basket.

Smell - Elsie smells like wildflowers and cedar. Like a fresh morning in Cindersap forest, when there is just the lightest sprinkling of frost on the ground.

Touch - Because of her powers, Elsie is initially cold to the touch. But it's just surface level. She's warm underneath, like when you're buried under a thick blanket of snow. Elsie is a creature of immense grace, despite her strength and speed. She's also soft, in spite of her muscular physique. I suppose overall Elsie's vibe feels like a maternal fairy spirit. Comforting and with an air of enchantment.

Sound - Unsurprisingly, Elsie has a beautiful singing voice. Her voice is low and husky at first, but then clear as a bell. When she sings a certain tune, she can call the fairies. Sometimes, when he's at his lowest, the only thing that works to soothe the storm inside Shane is Elsie's voice (I am cheesy, everyone hush 😅).

Huxley’s adoption story is part of a much larger narrative about race, disability and abuse

As an autistic adult who is also a transracial, transnational adoptee from China, I am fucking infuriated and disgusted, but entirely unsurprised.

By now, you’ve probably heard about the YouTube influencers who made international news for abandoning their autistic child after adopting him from China almost three years ago.

Huxley, originally adopted by the Stauffers, is one of thousands of children, many children of colour in the Global South who are adopted each year by predominantly white families in the Global North. Since his adoption – which was documented for YouTube in meticulous detail, including the fact that Huxley was disabled, the Stauffers have filmed numerous videos of him for their YouTube channel that they monetised and gained major corporate sponsors for producing. They filmed and posted videos that showed Huxley having meltdowns, which are terrifying, vulnerable moments. They are extremely emotionally, cognitively and physically draining for autistic people. They filmed and posted videos that showed Huxley with duct tape on his hands because his mother wanted to stop him from sucking his thumb. All of this is painfully familiar for autistic people, who routinely see nonautistic parents of autistic children exploiting and monetising their children for internet fame with no regard for their children’s autonomy, dignity, or privacy.

The Stauffers, who also talked about wanting to adopt another child from Uganda or Ethiopia, horrifically decided that because Huxley turned out to have more disabilities than they realised when adopting him and was doing things that they found scary (never specified as to what precisely), they needed to find somewhere else for him to live.

Describing this process as “rehoming” Huxley to a “new forever family” – descriptions most often found in discussions of rescued dogs – only reinforces the kind of ableist dehumanisation that autistic and other disabled people commonly face. I love dogs and cats. But I also know as a person of colour that white supremacy has long deployed animalistic comparisons as a means of dehumanising black, Native, Latinx and Asian people, while also implicitly or explicitly devaluing our lives as less important than that of non-human animals. (One need only to look toward the white liberals who are far more outraged about a white woman choking her dog than that she brazenly threatened a black man with death). Yet despite the Stauffers’ claim that they made a careful, reasoned choice, they were, in reality, participating in a less overtly awful part of a vast, unregulated and shadowy world of human trafficking poorly disguised as attempts to find new loving homes for adopted children – often disabled adoptees of colour – who are ultimately treated as expendable and disposable.

And yet, at the same time, many of us in disabled community are actually minorly relieved that the Stauffers abandoned their child and sent him to a different family because at least they didn’t murder him. Before you ask whether I’m hyperbolising or sensationalising, let me point you to the list of names maintained on the Disability Memorial website – a list of disabled people who were murdered by family members or caregivers that we read at yearly vigils. A list of disabled people whose lives were deemed tragic rather than their murders, whose murderers were lauded and praised as heroes, martyrs, angels, or saints, for taking on the great burden of dealing with us only to understandably snap from all of that stress. A list of disabled people murdered in calculated, cruel, horrific ways, as well as by deliberate neglect and years-long abuse. A list that has grown so long since the first vigils held in 2012 that this year, vigil organisers stopped reading the whole thing, because it would have taken hours just to say the names. The bar we have for these parents is so goddamn low now.

When I was still a baby, I became one of 787 children adopted that year from China by families in the United States. Like thousands of other transracial and transnational adoptees – children adopted by families of different races and nations than their own – I grew up with a fractured relationship to my own heritage and culture of origin, unable to access the same type of multigenerational and ancestral wisdom and knowledge as people raised by families and in communities who share their culture and history. And like many other disabled, queer and trans people, I also grew up in a family where I was the only one of my kind. Transracial adoptees, disabled people, queer people and trans people often share a particularly pernicious experience of isolation and alienation, a permanent outsider status or liminal existence, where we never fully belong anywhere. We are unmoored, marked indelibly by trauma made ordinary, our lives and experiences constantly subject to exploitation by those with more power and resources – even to the point of erasing our very existence.

Huxley’s story – no matter how much the Stauffers cried in their video describing what happened – also lays bare what many of us adoptees already know. The adoption industry – in both domestic and transnational adoption – is fueled by global white supremacy in the guise of white saviourism and it’s grotesquely ableist and capitalist. Dominant narratives about transracial and transnational adoption portray children of colour in the Global South as helpless and malleable infants who need to be rescued or saved by white people in the Global North, who will give us “a better life” because our own communities and cultures are presumed backward, uncivilised, uneducated and wrong. This logic is not only colonising and often orientalist but also profoundly ableist on a civilisational scale, by positing that white-dominant and Global North societies are superior to those of negatively racialised people in the Global South.

Transracial and transnational adoption often functions as little more than a less obviously awful form of human trafficking designed to serve colonial interests – and indeed, even domestic adoptions have a long history of eugenicist and racist aims through the use of residential schools and spurious labels of mental defectiveness, promiscuity and criminality to declare black, Indigenous and other people of colour as unfit to parent. That history continues today as state authorities frequently work to deprive black and Indigenous disabled parents of their children while simultaneously prohibiting many black, Indigenous and disabled parents from ever adopting children.

My heart breaks for Huxley, because I could have been him. And we know that untold numbers of other disabled adoptees remain at risk not only for another abandonment, but for further abuse, exploitation, or even murder – after all, that’s what happened to Zha-Nae, Sherin, Sabrina, Kentae, Nicholas, Jeffrey, Brandon, Grace, Mirudula, Elsie, La’Marion, Courtney, Madoc Hyeonsu, Terrilynn, Shane, Mollie, Noah and undoubtedly many more we will never know. There is no easy policy solution to the problems endemic in the child “welfare” system, let alone the underlying conditions of deliberate impoverishment, deprivation and dehumanisation of negatively racialised and disabled people that feed these systems. But those who are impacted are desperate for hope that Huxley might have some chance to live through this new trauma – that perhaps one day he will find community and belonging.

what my kiddos are doing for valentine’s day!

laura tagged along with lydia and rosy for a lot of the day because she normally spends the day with lydia and felt a little lonely probably. but then she left the two of them to do their own thing and now she’s scotty’s valentine and eating donuts with him.

audrey isn’t even aware it’s valentine’s day. she was probably alarmed by the all the paper hearts in messina then eventually shrugged it off and went to work.

harper spent it with toby of course, and baked him heart shaped cookies and they probably went for lunch with their kiddies! she also baked rhodes a batch as well and kissed him all over his face and told him she loved him no less than thirty times.

reuben had to help bill pick out a valentine’s day gift from tori and suggested that he take her on a ghost tour. whether or not he took that onboard is up to jenny :’) and then reuben pulled himself to dinner and asked daisy on a second date and probably just took her somewhere nice for dinner.

mickey didn’t celebrate valentine’s day because it’s shane’s birthday which is a hundred times more important to him. he saved up his money and bought him a vintage signed photo of gregory peck.

dennis went right ahead and bought bret flowers and they weren’t crumpled this time and he says that he’s only making up for squashing them on their auction date and that he didn’t even know that it was valentine’s day but he said all this with a stupid smile on his face and probably helped with the rosy surprise even though he complained the whole way through it.

alice spent the whole day making out with jay. probably in front of quinn at some point. i am so sorry.

leon sent an anonymous card to freddie because he’s in way over his head. silly boy.

atticus kissed eeeeeeveryone on the cheek today. but finn and reggie and amelia and annie got TWO kisses. he didn’t get anyone any gifts bc he claimed that he is their gift and that they should feel blessed.

wren claimed quinn as her valentine like she usually does. she made him a card like she usually does. and she kissed him like she usually does. later on, she went birdwatching with henry and tried to ignore all the flutters in her tummy.

rosy spent her day with lydia and got the best surprise EVERRRRR. she definitely cried. and then when laura left them alone she demanded that she and lydia cuddle in bed for the whole night and then told lydia that it’s the best valentine’s day she’d ever had. also realised she’s in love with lydia but didn’t say it out loud because she wants to tell bret first and ask if he thinks she should tell her.

wilhelm literally just spent the day with ringo starr. his ankle still hurts so he couldn’t even dance, poor bb.

felix wrote little valentine’s day cards for raegan, hazel and monica and then he sent one to eddie ‘from mallory’. but yeah it’s mostly from him. felix loves valentine’s day oh my gosh.

jack sang love songs all day, i’m not joking. he probably shyly serenaded ivy as well.

justin definitely asked raegan out on a date. and then as a joke he’d pretend he’d asked colton out as well and then he’d pretend to be worried about being double booked and then insist that indy needs to come now as well so there’ an even number. it probably wasn’t even his idea because he’s too dumb for that so raegan is welcome to take the credit.

callum debated asking what scotty was doing and then decided against it and just wished kai a happy valentine’s day through the wall before ultimately just going to work and spending his night on the docks.

brody lmaaaao okay so brody bought hunter a bunch of the saddest looking daffodils in the whole entire world because that was all he could afford. and he left them at her desk and claimed that it was so he could ‘keep up appearances’ oh my god i’ve been waiting to type this all day.

riley received lots of valentine’s cards from his students and took them all home with him and pinned them on his wall after he conferred with barry just to make sure that none of them were serious love letters. he sent monty a card and said he only did so because that’s what the two of them usually do.

sutton probably went to hang out with kara and ollie fully aware that it was valentine’s day but didn’t mention it and if it was brought up he would feign ignorance like ‘oh??? it’s valentine’s day???’

Funny story about how my black-haired Shane came to be. It was for a couple of reasons: 1) When I first played the game, I legit thought his hair was black. I assumed it was a stylistic choice that it has a sheen of purple in his portrait, because staunch black is harder to draw correctly. And his sprite has darker hair than his portrait 2) I use more "realism" for hair colour in my stories. Abby dyes her hair, so does Emily, etc. And I couldn't see Shane, depressed as he is, dyeing his hair purple. So even after I started seeing fanart of him with purple hair, I was like...I'm leaving it black 3) I read other stories before I began writing Kick where Shane was described with black hair, or "dark" hair. And I found the idea of this stubble-faced man with green eyes and black hair to be sooooo irresistible 🥵 and I still do. Black-haired Shane my beloved.

2. Who fell first? Who fell harder?

Elsie first saw Shane in a previous life, in the year 1435 when he was an Irish farmer named Seán and she was in her true form as the demigod Winter. She saw him—a lonely, scowling man who drank too much and preferred the company of his chickens to human beings—and fell in love with the deeply flawed mortal.

So Elsie fell first, at least in their first lifetime together. When Shane saw Elsie in that first lifetime he was completely knocked on his ass, though, because why the hell would this goddess of a woman want him? So I suppose you could say he fell harder, and when she was taken from him only a year later he couldn't live without her. Literally 😥

Since they've been together for so long in different lifetimes, there's no real way to tally up who fell fast and who fell harder however many times. It all kind of blends together for Shane and Elsie—all they know is the other person is their counterpart. Bound together for eternity.

8. What are their cuddling/sleeping preferences?

In truly annoying couple fashion, Elsie and Shane are glued at the hip, and don't like sleeping separately. They like to cuddle at any given opportunity, too, either just the two of them or with Jas on the couch while they watch a movie.

Shane is of course, shy, so in public with Elsie it's mostly hand-holding or walking around with his arm around her. But even his shyness doesn't stop him from planting a big kiss on her in public once in a while—including one that was captured on the Jumbotron at a Tunnelers game.

When they're sleeping, Shane starts out as the big spoon, but throughout the night when he and Elsie move around sometimes she's the big spoon. Or they're on their backs with their legs all tangled together with Elsie's head on Shane's chest. They are snuggly sleepers.

10. How do they bring out the best in each other?

There's a great deal of patience and devotion between Shane and Elsie. Shane is, as we know, not always good at believing in himself. So how fitting that Elsie is determined as hell to make Shane see himself the way she sees him—as wonderful. When Shane bullies himself, or thinks he's not good enough for her, Elsie is skilled at gently correcting him. They've been through a lot together, so she's pretty adept at it by now. Since being with Elsie in this lifetime, Shane has witnessed her display an astounding amount of strength and resilience. This has inspired him to find strength within himself he didn't know existed. Elsie has also given Shane a TON of confidence. On a deep level, and a shallow one. She's really hot, okay? It's hard for Shane to be embarrassed by much in public when people see him with Elsie.

Elsie didn't really have anyone to rely on before moving to Pelican Town. She doesn't speak to her parents, and often felt adrift. So she often resorted to soothing herself with impulsive shopping, partying, and dating men who didn't treat her well. Shane had his issues when Elsie moved to Pelican Town, but for all his flaws, he was never anything but honest. He's become Elsie's rock in a lot of ways, and checks her when she gives into her more dangerous impulses. So despite having literally saved Shane's life, he's also saved Elsie's on multiple occasions.

11. How do they bring out the worst in each other?

Elsie and Shane are both hotheaded and stubborn. They rarely fight, but when they do it's fairly heated. Usually this happens when Elsie becomes overconfident in her admittedly impressive abilities. Shane goes into the mines with Elsie, and has some abilities of his own, but sometimes she still charges ahead without considering her safety. Understandably, this scares the shit out of Shane. He's seen Elsie die more than once in previous lives, and he's also had to rescue her from an evil mage in this current life. So his temper gets the best of him sometimes, and the couple's worst fights have been after close scares in the mines, or the Secret Woods.

Elsie is very emotionally vulnerable—to a fault lmao. She has sometimes trusted the wrong people as a result, and it's put her in danger. However, no, I don't think she'd say that disclosure is a weakness or a fault. She kind of lives her life with a big, open heart, and while it's led to hurt in the past, it's also led to very close relationships in her life that she treasures. Elsie opened her heart up to Shane almost immediately—a risky venture. But she's never regretted it because she's always wanted to give him all over her love since day one.

Where would Elsie take Shane on a date?

Elsie is into punk and metal music, and used to love going to shows before things started getting crappy for her in Zuzu City. That works out well, because we all know Shane is a punk on the inside. Elsie would take Shane to a concert in the city. Something hardcore or punk, probably not metal. Shane's not scared of the crowd when Elsie is holding his hand, so they go to the show, and they lose their absolute minds over the music. They scream along to the songs, get in the pit, and make out in the middle of the crowd.

Afterwards they get food from a street vendor, fuck in an alley, and Shane possibly ends up with Elsie's name tattooed on his body somewhere.
