Shaman-rock in Lake Baikal, Siberia in Russia. It's a subject of many popular legends and myths about Lake Baikal and Angara river, besides it is one of the main symbols of Lake Baikal. According to one legend, furious Baikal threw this rock after his daughter to prevent her from running away without his permission to her beloved Enisey. In the past, local people believed in the miraculous power of Shaman rock. According to ancient belief, it was the residence of Angara river master - Ama Sagaan Noyon. Most important rituals were held on Shaman rock, it was a place for taking an oath and praying, besides people used to bring criminals for a night here and leave them alone with cold icy river flow. Lake Baikal is a true jewel of nature, a treasure hidden in the vast remoteness of the Siberian taiga. Baikal holds the record as the deepest lake in the world, with a depth of 1600 meters. It is also the cleanest and oldest, and the one with the largest volume of water: 20% of all the flowing water in the entire world is found in Baikal. It is a magical place with gorgeous landscapes, nature of incomparable beauty, and numerous legends. Its coasts are inhabited by the Buryat people, who revere the lake, along with Russian settlers, and shamanistic holy places, Buddhist Datsan temples and Orthodox monasteries are scattered across the beautiful banks surrounding Baikal. The ecosystem of Baikal is one of the richest, most diverse in the world, as, due to its isolation, most of its fauna and flora is endemic. The most notable specimens are the Baikal Seal or Nerpa; the Omul, a sort of small salmon, and the Baikal Sturgeon. The neighboring forests are populated by bears, wolverines, reindeer, and lynxes, among others. Stop at Shaman’s Rock. Rising out of the Angara River and very near Lake Baikal, where the river originates, Shaman Rock holds intense spiritual meaning for locals. My favourite stop in Russia was on Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal, Siberia. It's absolutely beautiful there. Close to the Shaman Rock, 13 prayer poles have been erected on the headland facing the rock. The totem poles are covered in brightly coloured ribbons. The poles represent the 13 deities of the island. I'll post of photo of the actual shaman rock tomorrow. For Buryat Shamanists and Buddhists, Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal is a sacred and holy place. Along Cape Burkhan on Olkhon Island, there is a very important pilgrimage site - Shamanka (shaman) Rock, one of the nine holy places of Asia. If you walk along Cape Burkhan, you will come across serges -- ritual poles swaddled in cloth and ribbons left by pilgrims. It is custom to tie a ribbon to a serge and make a prayer to promote peace, compassion, and wisdom. Pilgrims believe the prayers will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Different elements are associated with different colors -- a blue ribbon symbolizes the sky and space, white symbolizes the air and wind, red symbolizes fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes earth.
