I have been reading a book by Sudipta Sen on Ganga. This is a comprehensive book on the mighties. The story of the Ganga in the book starts at the Kali Gandaki river, flowing from the high mountains of Nepal through the Ladakh range. Its the path that has been traversed by traders, monks, and people who wear all kinds of stripes. Rivers are fascinating, they shape the culture, and the environment in the world in the most profound way. In the words of Richard White, who describes the Columbia river, rivers are the most dynamical symbol of nature: “They absorb and emit energy, they rearrange the world.”

Where like Kali Gandaki today is where lied the sea if Tethys some 190 million years ago. Tectonic activity during the Cretaceous period created the Himalayas. No wonder, so much of marine fossils are still found in the area around the gorge of Kali Gandaki river. Especially, there were fossils by the name of Ammonites which scoured the floors of the sea of tethys some hundred million years ago. Their dark polished fossils are known as Shaligrams, which are the preeminent signs of Lord Bishnu.

One of the themes of the book is how the river ganga is the river of death, a passage to heaven. Its a place of pilgrims where one can cleanse ones sins by immersion in the whole warer. Indian mythology is replete with the miraculous healing power of this river. Apparently, just a sip of this water the Vedic horse sacrifice or by merely casting one’s eyes in Ganga. Apparently, the Mughal emperor drank only Ganga water; and he did not like the taste of well water. Well of course, it was probably concentrated with arsenic. 

How can such a sacred river be so infested with industrial waste. Certainly, it is full of human remains but also it burdens the waste of the most populated country in the world. Many speculations exist, some hint towards the bacteriphage viruses in Ganga which purifies it. Say for instance, in festivals such as Kumbh or Kartik Purnima, some sixteen million people immerse themselves in this water, seldom resulting in a major pandemic. Its hard to say, if it says more about humans dipping in the river itself or the miraculous power of the river. 

One interesting feature of the river is banks in Varanasi is that the giant bathing steps to the river were rebuild during the Mughal period of the leading Rajput and Maratha houses of western India. I am learning more about this river. It is indeed fascinating.
