Let's talk about Spencer's sense and perception of self.

Identity isn't something Spencer lingers on, or likes to for that matter. She's much more the type to outright say something about herself and make it true rather than reflect on her existing state (there are exceptions where the latter requires the former, but in the broadest sense)—it gives her more power over herself and that's something she doesn't perceive herself to have very much of. Combine both of these things with the fact that she isn't very emotionally-intelligent, and her attitude of isolating herself [because the alternative is too much work]... makes an unfortunate amount of sense.

Taking her orientation as a case study; I'd label her demiromantic bisexual, but she would describe herself more along the lines of "I hate it when people think my interest is romantic, and isn't it normal to want to date your girl friends?" Which is most evident in her relationship with Bernadine, where most people to tend to think they ARE dating, and Spencer wonders about "do I want to date her and am I in love with her, and how do I tell" quite often. That's the only reason she's got that far (that and, amatonormativity is hard to ignore if you don't slot in with it) but it's never crossed her mind that there's plenty of overlap with friends and lovers, or that that delineation might be significant. (Though it isn't helping her case that she leans more strongly aromantic and it takes a frankly unreasonable amount of time for her to "fall for" someone.)

Spencer just is, and tries not to think about the ways she could be, because she'd run herself into the ground otherwise. (It's still a prominent concern though, and the main reason underpinning her adherence to a high personal standard and optimization, all the way down to the fact she's a minmaxer in video games. She's well-aware of the fact that the margin for error's never zero—you don't get all the eggs in the basket, there are just some things you don't have control over—but if it's up to her she'll milk it for all it's worth. Which is another mindset that traces back to her parents. She takes what she can get, and she takes it with vigor.)

For that reason, it takes a lot to get her to reassess, so to speak, and she isn't handling it with dignity and patience. Whenever she's forced to confront a truth about herself she'll be kicking and screaming about it. People are strange and confusing and take work, and tend to have some concept of what she should be and not what she is, she'd rather do her own thing and what works for her even if it's worse for her in the long run. Here's the trick: that's the one thing she knows that she's doing, and she's not proud of it. But who's left in her life to stop her?

you got it boss. i am showing u spencer kennerly, salmon runner and tiktoker extraordinaire, lead of her shitty indie pop punk band and slightly better ink battle team, haughty bastard distilled. her tentacles are like that bc smallfry like latching on n chewing them. her band's name is boss of you because she Is.

she's a trans woman, a leo, japanese-canadian, and an expert at on the job campfire cooking out of a stinger's pot. even if she were to replace her glasses they'd crack in the exact same way next time she got on the field. when not clocked in, she is attending card game nights with the local grandmas or polishing the enormous fucking collection of silver knickknacks she's thrifted. she's also genuinely quite young for the job, which when combined with her exacting nature, bossiness, and irritability foster a lot of resent from her coworkers. it's still better than retail.

dont bother asking if she has friends. except for like, the one fuckin guy that she can't get rid of on-shift, whom she doesn't team with & hates her right back in fact, but these days you cannot find spencer without shiloh abralia. (he belongs to shadowsplice tho) even at 2 am, in the worst circumstances imaginable. there's a fic about that

🤥 LYING — are they good liars? do they have tells to show they're lying?

👻 GHOST — do they believe in ghosts? what are their "ghostly experiences", if any?

augh. Okay, first of all, Spencer grew up with Shinto practices and beliefs, so that's her baseline. But I'm still not confident enough in my place of research with it to be more specific than that; and take this answer with a grain of salt, because it's bound to change. That said, Spencer's kind of halfway on the skeptic to believer scale; she believes in the supernatural, but will sooner check for a carbon monoxide leak than cry ghost. I want to say she'd believe more in broad forces rather than individual hauntings, by dint of personality—there's definitely more to reality than what we make of it, but in this day and age, anyone who says that's most likely trying to sell you something. She takes offense to the impracticality of it all. Don't you want to know the answer instead of obscuring it?

With that in mind, she doesn't interpret a lot of the weird things which have gone on at Grizzco as ghostly. Bad weather, strange noises, and tech malfunctions are par for the course; glimpses of things that aren't there get chalked up to exhaustion. But it does not escape her that it is a place all but built to manufacture lost and vengeful spirits—and, yeah. She's a little scared of it. She dreams of Shiloh as a dead man more often than she'd like to admit, and it takes her a very long time to forget that one late night spent in the building trying to track down their lost coworker.

🌌 MILKY WAY — what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

If I had to pick one singular thing, the most memorable, it was definitely her infatuation for silver things. I remember wondering what kind of characterization I could imply with badges and a banner and went with the silver scheme from there. Then I was still stuck on the idea of a real jerk of a salmon runner, and naturally matching her with Shiloh, giving them both an excellent synergy and real hatred of one another. She was sarcastic, cutthroat, bitey, entitled, commanding, and stupid as fuck from the moment of conception. If that wasn't enough, even then she didn't actually want to be there—but, for various reasons, she didn't think she had a choice.

🎵 MUSIC NOTE — what is their playlist like? their favourite artists? do you associate a particular song with them?

Spencer's playlist's comprised of an hour and a half of songs that sound nothing alike and don't make any sense together. OK, that's hyperbole, but I do want to clean it up a bit more before I make it public; I'll list a few I'm biased toward.

📚 BOOKS — how were they at school? what is their best subject? what is their worst subject? do they have a favourite subject?

In most of her fellow students' view Spencer was that peak annoying overachieving teacher's pet with no personality beyond homework and fewer friends. She was a diligent, quiet student who didn't rustle feathers and put in rigorous work, much to the pleasure of her teachers... but she wasn't ever good at learning. Every high grade she got was a product of hours poured into homework, extra reading, and self-teaching—and especially of her parents' intense standards. No matter how much effort she put in, how much she pushed herself and memorized and stayed up late studying, she was always little more than average. She didn't have a favorite subject—she moved quite often and changed teachers frequently, and found the subject unimportant in comparison to how it was taught.

Language arts was her particular kryptonite, though; Spencer is not a woman built for metaphor and she finds both reading and writing more difficult than they're worth. She isn't illiterate, but doesn't think of writing as an art, and her attempts at it... leave something to be desired. Nor does her work as a lyricist shine with wordplay and mastery. Band would be an obvious answer for "best subject" but she was never actually taught it or music theory—it's the one thing she's managed to pick up under her own power. She's alright with numbers, and did fine with geometry though not so much with algebra... The one good memory she does have in education was an especially patient and hands-on geographies teacher, and that remains the one time she actually excelled in a subject.

heyo, wanted to get in on this pokeganda thing and (since a lot of my first choices were covered already lmao) i figured i’d give some much-needed attention to cranidos and rampardos. i’ve always liked them as i like all fossil pokemon, and they hail from my favorite region, so really it was a no-brainer.

so yeah! i’ve never run a sideblog like this before so we’ll see how it goes. my main is @shadowsplice so likes and such will come from there. let’s give these poke-cephalosaurs some time in the spotlight!
