Teaser: “Magnus, talk to me…” he yells again in desperation, “Magnus!”

The warlock jerks back as if slapped. He finally lifts his head a little with effort, and squints at Alec’s direction before his eyes go wide in alarm.

“Alexander!” His lips move, letting out a soft, barely audible sound. As focused as he is on the warlock with his entire being, Alec hears it as clearly as a church bell ringing inside his mind. He crawls towards the warlock to get as close as he can, and stops when his knee is almost brushing against the flaming lines of the circle around the intricate sigil.

“Magnus, why?” His words are quiet this time, and Alec knows Magnus can hear him anyway, judging by the way his expression crumples. “Why would you do this?”

“Why are you here?” The stubborn man decides to answer the questions with his own, “How are you here?”

“I’m here because you’re here,” Alec spits angrily, his fear for the warlock waging war with the fury at the unfairness of all of it. His entire body is shaking with emotion, ready to fall apart and his soul is on the brink of shattering along with the one whom he had given it all to without reservation. 

Or perhaps, it might be the ghost of Edom gleefully feeding on the pain of his heartbreak and misery. 

“You thought you'd go down in flames all by yourself? That’s not going to happen this time. Remember I promised you, Magnus? Never again!”

“And I made a promise to protect you above all else!” Magnus roars at him in response, wasting the precious little life he has left.

so I got tagged by the lovely @blj2007 who is a totally awesome writer and you should really read…

Rules: Post the first line of the last ten stories, then tag some of your favorite authors. (as you know Im hopeless at tagging…but if anyone wants to have a go that would be awesome..)

so here goes

1. The Pledge

Magnus Bane, prince of Edom, stretched out on the chaise longue, wine goblet in hand and continued regaling his friends with the latest romantic disaster to befall him.

2. A Tangled Web We Weave

Home. It was an odd word really for someone who'd never really felt like he belonged anywhere but it was only stepping through the door and being greeted by the lines of yellow cabs waiting for fares that it struck Magnus that yes, New York, was exactly that, his home.

3. The Start Of A New Chapter

“Ok well that's the last one.” Jace dumped the last cardboard box on the floor before almost throwing himself onto the ratty sofa in the middle of the living room.

4. Brooklyn Magic

Magnus sighed with relief as the last person left and he could finally lock up. It was a constant amazement that mundanes always seemed to leave their shopping until the very last moment on Christmas Eve. Surely this was a time they should be spending with family and friends not desperately searching round an obscure gallery of tribal artefacts in Brooklyn. Apparently his understanding of mundane tradition was was more limited than he thought.

5. What To Get The Clan Leader Who Has Everything

The last few months had been a steep learning curve for Simon Lewis. Amongst the most important things he had learnt were that sometimes even your best friends didn't have your best interests at heart even though they meant well and secondly sometimes people who seem grumpy and distant are the most forgiving people of all.

6. Magical Max

Magnus had heard parents talk about the terrible twos but had never really taken it seriously. He was starting to realise just how wrong he was as he looked down at his 22 month old son who was currently in the middle of an epic meltdown, his little blue hands balled into fists and punching the mattress.

7. Of Strength and Weakness

Clary crumpled to the ground, tears flowing freely. Alec rushed towards her and bundled her up his arms, crouching down amongst the rubbish, head resting on the top of her head as her whole body shook with emotion.

8. Misbehaving

The war with Valentine had changed so much about the shadowworld. For the first time in Alec's lifetime there was a noticeable shift in attitude to downworlders. Ok so it was still early days but the fact that representatives of downworld were included in Clave meetings could only be a definite step in the right direction. The only downside was that in negotiating the new accords the meetings were becoming endless, this evening’s meeting being a classic example.

9. Magnus’ Eurovision Soiree

It had all started so innocently. They had been lying on the sofa in the loft just watching some nonsense tv show when Magnus had suggested it. How about a little soirée ? His exact words. That probably should have been a hint. You know to celebrate you moving in…just a few close friends.

10. A Surprise For Magnus

Time for change Alec decided and when he decided something Alec always followed through with everything he had….

I have many, many thoughts on the Shadownhunters finale:

Firstly, maybe we could cram less into an episode? I feel that entire ep could have been a two-parter, with Jace’s death being the first part cliffhanger. I’m not sure but I feel like maybe this is why this felt less epic and high-stakes to me than By the Light of Dawn did. I would love for them to slow down.

I adored Clary and Jace - I’m onboard the Clace ship anyway but they really sold it here.

I’m going to miss Alan. He was fabulous and his disbelief and outrage that Clary killed him was wonderful.

Having the Seelies as an enemy is going to be super amazing next season.

My headcanon: Magnus didn’t open the door to Alec because he’d been destroying his loft after he learned of the Seelie Queen’s deal and he didn’t want Alec to see. I think for quite a lot of that episode, the tone and expressions on Harry’s face were the Magnus equivalent of shame. I think he was hurt and embarrassed that the ally he chose so quickly turned out to be worse than the Shadowhunters. And I think that’s what he meant by ‘I thought I had to choose between the Downworld and you’. He learned that the Downworld was just as duplicitous. I just don’t think this was obvious enough in the episode and so made it seem like Magnus had just changed his mind because Valentine was dead. I also feel like maybe he should have been far more aware that the Seelies are self-serving assholes and so he’s probably very self-aware that his actions were dictated by personal hurt, and that’s playing into a lot of his shame. Love he couldn’t look Alec in the eyes for a lot of the episode.

I feel Alec maybe should have been more worried about Magnus being in Idris with the angel. His desire to keep Magnus safe and send him to the Seelie realm could have been played on more. But I adored how they kept supporting each other physically when the other was hurt. As much as we always quote them and love their lines, I feel a lot of their relationship is told in their small actions.

I got tonal flashbacks to their date and playing pool when Alec asked if he was going to be ok at the beach. Love their teasing competitiveness.

Loved the parabatai bond breaking scenes. Totally felt it. Think there could have been a little more emotion in the aftermath though.

Sorry to be a downer, but I don’t know how I feel about the Malec reunion. Ok, I love that they are trying to be together. Don’t get me wrong. But I’m not sure if the power imbalance is purposeful: Alec is the one always apologising and trying to reach out to Magnus. I’m not sure if that’s the writers showing how jaded Magnus is, or if they are trying to balance out the fact that Alec comes from an oppressive society that traditionally has had more power than warlocks. But I would like to see Magnus apologise as well and be the one to try to fix things, otherwise this relationship is going to end up looking one-sided even if it’s not.

On that note, I am unsure how I feel about Magnus saving Alec at the beach. Especially because Alec got that stunning shot earlier, him missing and running while shouting for help felt off to me. But I think the writers meant to show that Magnus still cares for him by breaking to kill the demon? I don’t know, I feel that he would have done the same for Izzy even if he doesn’t like Shadowhunters very much. So for me that was an odd writing choice. Maybe on second watch I’ll feel better about it.

But I did love that they ditched the party. And I loved that Magnus downed his drink to talk, and I do feel Alec didn’t mean to ask to talk, he just pressed his advantage and the boy was shaking and gearing himself up for another fight and that was adorable. And Magnus admitting he kept thinking about Alec was so slow and begrudging and wonderful and that was when his walls came down again and I was so so happy about that. Although I did think 'did you think it would be so easy to shut out someone you love?’ But maybe it has been for Magnus in the past and Alec is the exception. I don’t know, but that would be great for the writers to explore.

Um, while I adore the sentiment of 'I don’t think I can live without you’ it’s a bit leading, isn’t it? What was Magnus going to reply: 'well, you’ll have to die then’?! I loved the delivery, and how it got across that Alec couldn’t function without Magnus, but it was a bit dramatic for Alec, and a little selfish. I’m sure some people will say that it’s either Alec threatening suicide, but I don’t think Alec is a dick and I also think he would know, after the ledge, how terrible that would be. So I’m going to go with 'awkward phrasing designed to make you remember that Magnus is going to have to live without Alec one day’, and then we can all sob together.

Oh, Simon. You beautiful self sacrificing vampire. Terrible marriage hijinks ensue!!

Can you not let Luke have one night?! Jesus Lady.

I reckon they’ll tackle a lot of this in season three so all in all I’m happy. Obligatory coda fic coming up.

So, wait, just reading all these body-swapping theories for season 2b of Shadownhunter, and thinking, my current WIP fic (A Bedtime Prayer), which was conceived and plotted out last year, is basically a body-swap story; does that make me cool before body-swap plots were cool? Which, now that I think about it, would make me ... uncool. Aww, man!! 😩
