WHY ARE PEOPLE LEAVING FANDOM'S? WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT.
So, I have noticed that a lot of my mutual's for many fandom's ( TUA, TWD, Z-NATION, WWDITS, Derry Girls, HOTD, etc. ) have been dropping like flies.
[ I love you my beautiful friends, and I hope one day you will feel comfortable and safe to come back ]
It got me thinking, why? Why? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?! But, after talking to a few of my mutual's on other apps, it came down to mainly three common things with these mutual's. ( note, this is not for every fandom / fan, this was just the mutual's that I talked to, okay? )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. The TV show ended, so there isn't much reason to stick around anymore. ( Umbrella Academy, The Walking Dead, Derry Girls, Z-Nation, What We Do in the Shadows, etc. )
Which is valid. If there are no more ( Ex. Sunday episodes for HOTD or Sunday episodes for TWD ) not many fans wanna stick around.
Then, after so many fans leave. It kind of becomes a 'dead fandom'. Where people sometimes goes back to time to time and be like, "Oh, I remember that show.." for nostalgia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Their interests have changed.
Like any common trend, some people just say, "Nah, I don't like *insert show* anymore. I liked the 5th season and 2nd. But, I'm just not that into *insert genre* tv shows anymore." Again, valid.
Everyone had gone through one kind of phase before. It could have been books ( PJO, HP, etc. ) or fashion ( Skinny jeans, graphic t-shirts, etc. ) or music ( MCR, Blood on the Dance Floor, etc. )
It's fine to grow and change.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. The fandom doesn't feel like a fandom anymore. This is a BIG one that many have told me.
People are clashing together, book vs tv show fights, character x character ships are constantly hating on each other, death threats are being sent to actors / fans / fanfic writers, you can't share your opinion without someone sending hate, etc.
The best example is HOTD. A fandom that I am in / write for.
Now, now, here me out! I have been very open about the hate in the fandom. You can check. I've gotten hate for writing about highly requested character's ( Aegon, Aemond, etc. ) and I have called out how fans are acting towards each other / actors.
What I don't get is this. We are all in the same fandom.
How did we go from, "Oh, Tom Glynn-Carney is really cute in Aegon's wig. It suits him.", "I have a fan theory that maybe in the next episode they'll do this part from the book because the teaser at the end of the episode it shows..", and, "I hope they put this scene in the show!"
To "Oh, you think Tom Glynn-Carney is cute as Aegon? Well you support r@pe and deserve death threats!", "Oh, you wrote a fanfic / oneshot / etc. for this character? Oh, it has a trope that it being used by a lot of other writers? Here's hate for that!", and, "Tom Glynn-Carney says that Aegon is a complex character...so clearly he supports..."
The main point is that this is why soooooo many of people are dropping out of fandom's. And when people call it out, they either get run out of the fandom as well or blasted for it with death threats.
Fandom's used to be places where people could go to geek out with others. A safe place. It's why there is comic con, etc. People want to know other fans, the want a safe place to go to.
Now, it's become a place where you have to mostly keep your head down low and not say a thing to avoid being run out because you share a different opinion.
Tumblr media
In conclusion? I hope that fandom's can be kind to each once again so that people feel safe / comfortable to come back.
To all my beautiful fans who were run out / felt like they had to leave a fandom, I love you and understand why you left. I hope one day you will come back and find joy in the fandom that you once did.
Tumblr media
To those of you running out fans / sending death threats. It's you that ruins the fandom. Fandom's were safe places for people, now you've ruined it for those people.
If you don't like a fandom / other fan, you have other options :
1. IGNORE THEM AND LEAVE THEM ALONE!
2. BLOCK A TAG / ACCOUNT YOU DON'T LIKE!
3. DON'T SEND DEATH THREATS!
4. FIND A PART OF THE FANDOM THAT MATCHES YOU AND STICK TO IT!
5. Block their account / tag, ignore them, not send death threats, leave them alone and enjoy the parts of the fandom that matches you.
It's that simple!
----
hopefully i can get this out there. so i am tagging some of the bigger people i know / follow..

In Your Dreams
Apollion x Reader x Thanatos smut
A/N: after reading HOFAS, I couldn't resist writing about the Princes of Hel, aka the ultimate shadow daddies
warnings: smut, mmf, oral f! receiving, oral m!receiving, p in v sex, shadow play, sensory deprivation, rough sex, electro-stimulation, blood, is this monster fucking? they're kind of incubus-esque
Tumblr media
A weight at the end of your bed woke you, eyes fluttering open to see a familiar face studying you. Apollion’s black eyes flicked over your body, head tilting in an unsettlingly smooth motion that sent a shiver down your spine.
You dared an exasperated sigh, leveling your gaze with the prince’s. “Couldn’t let me sleep in peace for one night, could you? Are my dreams more interesting than whatever duties you have in Hel?”
A ghost of a smile flashed across Apollion’s lips, his leathery wings flaring slightly behind him at your overt disrespect. “You are certainly of interest to me,” he retorted, stern expression giving nothing away.
You opened your mouth to question what the prince meant by that, when another figure materialized at the foot of your bed. With a gasp, you tucked your knees to your chest as swirling darkness slowly transformed into another male, tall with black curly hair, his dark eyes matching Apollion’s as he watched you with a vague sense of interest.
Apollion showed neither surprise or bother at the male’s appearance, simply offering a nod of greeting before turning back to face you. Tugging your covers towards yourself, you made a feeble attempt at covering yourself from the stranger. “And who do you think you are, coming into my room, my dreams?” you demanded.
A flicker of amusement flashed in his eyes, your cheeks reddening in response as you felt his power ripple through the room, realization of how powerless you were in this situation hitting you like a shockwave.
He must have recognized your embarrassment, mouth ticking up slightly as he rumbled in a deep voice, “You may call me Thanatos. I am a Prince of Hel.” Lightning sparked down his toned arms as he spoke, stopping your heart as you tried to hide the fear from your face.
“Helfire,” he murmured, softer this time. At your look of confusion, the handsome male amended, “it is not lighting. It is Helfire,” he explained, holding up one hand to demonstrate the bright power. Apollion’s darkness swirled around him where he sat, creating a maelstrom of power, a dark storm that both stole the air from your lungs and charged the energy in the room.
As they drew in their powers, the air in the room settling, you had the frightening realization. Your wild gaze turned to Thanatos, the male fully smirking at you this time as he merely nodded in confirmation of your suspicions. “I didn’t say ‘lightning’,” you breathed. “Can you read my thoughts?”
Thanatos took two steps closer to you, his large form towering over where you sat on the bed. “Yes,” he drawled, gaze flicking to Apollion’s before he continued. “I have heard every dirty, sinful thought you’ve had about my brother.” He showed no mercy, no pity towards your mortified expression. “And every thought about myself since I arrived, for that matter. Not that I had to. We can smell your desire, it’s quite sweet. No wonder that my brother finds his way here so often.”
You looked to Apollion, your heart pounding as you suddenly became aware of your flush, the slick between your legs, your heavy breasts. His expression hadn’t changed, black eyes still watching you with that predatory stillness. Nervously biting your lip, you subtly rolled your hips against the mattress in an attempt at relief, your arousal building much more quickly now in the presence of both of them.
“But you... you are not an incubus?” you questioned, anxiously watching as Apollion’s wings twitched behind him.
Thanatos scoffed at your side. “No, we do not require your pleasure for our survival.”
“But all creatures of Hel - lesser, or most powerful - acquire... a strength, of sorts, from that pleasure,” Apollion murmured, his nostrils flared, chest heaving. It was the most expressive you had ever seen him, clearly overcome with his hunger. His desire, for you.
“Is that why you continue to show up in my dreams? You are drawn to my... pleasure?” you managed to ask.
Apollion’s gaze raked down your form, as though he could sense how you were fighting not to reach out and touch him. “As I said before, I find you interesting. The potential of bringing you pleasure is one aspect of that.”
You turned to see Thanatos, who had somehow moved even closer to your side, less than an arm’s length away. He smiled down at you, pointed teeth bared in an expression that should have been frightening. “My interest in you is purely carnal. I’ve scented you on my brother, your arousal clinging to him even in Hel. It is tempting.” He clicked his tongue, sizing you up like a meal set before him.
Shaking off the thrill that sent down your spine, you looked between the two princes. “So, what do you want from me, then?”
Apollion’s eyes flickered, his dark aura growing as he leaned closer to you. “Permission. We need permission to touch you,” he breathed, his warm, rich voice like a balm to your fried nerves. Biting back a whimper at their desperate gazes, you nodded.
“You may touch me, please,” you agreed, sitting up and letting the covers drop. Neither prince spared a glance at the nightgown that clung to your body, Apollion instead reaching out a gentlemanly hand - an invitation for you to accept.
The moment you set your hand in his, his darkness consumed the room, your surroundings disappearing as you were sucked into a dark void. You could see nothing, only feeling your lack of clothing, hearing the soft breathing of the two demons at your front and back.
Apollion’s hand released your own, sliding up your arm to rest above your heart. A dizzying sort of pleasure muddled your thoughts, bones feeling weak as Apollion groaned in front of you, the grip of his hand on your chest growing stronger.
“Good girl,” Thanatos whispered, and you felt his naked body press against yours from behind, his hands supporting your waist. Your hair was swept to the side, Thanatos raking his sharp teeth over your neck, small droplets of blood quickly lapped up with a groan.
Apollion’s hand moved from your heart, joining his other as they toyed with your nipples, his mouth alternating sucking and licking on each sensitive bud. With a lewd moan, your legs gave out from the pleasure, but instead of falling to the ground, you found yourself lifted in the air.
You were weightless, floating in this dark void with no eyesight, the brushing of the princes’ bodies against yours the only sign that you were levitating, suspended in the air as Apollion switched placed with Thanatos. Thanatos’s hands slid up your calves, spreading your legs as he moved in between them, the feeling of his warm breath on your inner thighs.
The princes moved in tandem, Apollion’s teeth moving to the same spot on your neck where Thanatos had marked you moments prior, as Thanatos dove into your slick cunt. A moan left your lips, back arching and eyes rolled back as Thanatos’s warm tongue flicked over your clit, sharp teeth nibbling softly as he sucked on the swollen bud.
Warmth trickled down your neck where Apollion held your head, licking and sucking down to your shoulder. His hands twined around your chest, pinching and rolling your nipples between nimble fingers as Thanatos continued his assault on your pussy.
A finger rubbed gently along your folds, slipping into your aching cunt with ease. Obscene wet sounds echoed through the dark space, heat rising to your cheeks as Thanatos slipped in another finger, cooing to you, “don’t be embarrassed, little one.” He curled his fingers against your sensitive walls, your breaths shuddering as you mewled at his expert touch. “Good girl, let us hear those delicious sounds.”
Apollion chuckled from wherever he was behind you, and you could feel his eyes on your body as you clenched around Thanatos’s fingers. “She’s close,” he murmured, and Thanatos hummed as though he had been waiting for that signal.
You screamed at the sudden shock of pleasure that traveled from Thanatos’s tongue, straight to your clit as he sent you spiraling over the edge into your orgasm. Stars danced in your vision, the only source of light as you moaned, babbling incoherently as the prince worked you through your high.
“That is Helfire,” Thanatos murmured, smugness lacing his tone as you struggled to catch your breath. You heard the demons shifting again, and a small yelp escaped you as you were flipped over onto your hands and knees, completely disoriented in this suspended state of darkness.
Apollion’s familiar hands slid up the backs of your thighs, thumbs spreading your ass open before sliding a finger up your dripping slick. The prince groaned behind you, the sound of him sucking on your juices causing you to clench around nothing.
A gentle but firm hand cupped your cheek, tilting your face forward. “Open up,” Thanatos spoke in a low rumble, and you obeyed without question, tongue out as you awaited, eager to please. Precum dripped onto your tongue as the head of his cock pressed into your lips, the demon groaning in pleasure as you sucked the tip, flicking your tongue along his slit.
You leaned forward, hands searching for purchase on Thanatos’s hips as you aimed to take him deeper into your mouth. His cock pushed past your lips, hitting the back of your throat just as you felt Apollion’s hand spreading you further, rubbing his erection against your folds.
Your moan turned to a gag around Thanatos’s thick length, tears pricking at your eyes as the demon prince’s hands guided your jaw to take him even further. “Relax,” he commanded, tapping your throat. Willing yourself to relax, the prince hummed his approval as he slid fully in your throat, your nose pressed against his lower abdomen. “Stay still. Let us do the work,” he murmured, withdrawing his hips slowly.
He thrust back into your mouth at the same time Apollion pushed into your hips, both princes seated fully inside of you. You practically melted, thankful for whatever dark forces held you up as the two of them began thrusting together inside of you, your wanton moans muffled by Thanatos’s cock down your throat.
Silky tendrils like wisps of air circled soothing motions over your body, the cool breeze undulating over your peaked nipples, your swollen clit. You were sent over the edge again, overstimulation wracking through you as the demons continued to use you for their pleasure.
Thanatos twitched in your mouth, tilting your chin up as he said, “swallow it” - your only warning before he spilled down your throat. You swallowed eagerly, tongue flicking out as you collected his remaining seed. The scene must have sent Apollion over the edge, his hips stuttering before he came behind you with a roar.
Your muscles were limp, hardly more than a rag doll as strong arms picked you up bridal style. You were vaguely aware of being back in your bedroom, Apollion pulling the covers over you as Thanatos watched with mild interest.
The demon princes stepped back, darkness beginning to envelop the both of them. “You’re leaving?” you managed to mumble, eyes straining to focus on the pair.
The corner of Apollion’s mouth ticked up, Thanatos’s eyes shimmering with amusement. “Don’t worry, little one. We’ll be back soon.”
~~~
You awoke the next morning, breath catching in your lungs as you recalled last night’s dream - but it felt too real to be a dream. Kicking off your covers, you tumbled out of bed, still clad in your nightgown. You shook your head, taking a large sip of water from the glass next to your bed as you tried to erase the disappointment that it was in your head.
Sighing, you padded into the bathroom, turning on the water for your shower when you felt a soreness on your neck. Hissing at the dull pain, you turned to the bathroom mirror, recognizing the pain as from the same spot where Thanatos and Apollion had bitten you in your dream. But in that spot, etched into your skin like a healing scar, was an eight-pointed star.
The Hard Call
Azriel x Reader
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Requeted by Anon! Nonnie, thank you for enabling me to write about Az and Flynn, I absolutely love you for it ❤️ Feel free to drop by any time you want to talk anything SJM-related! Hope you like this, and good news, I have a Flynn fic coming in the next couple days too!
Fandom: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Summary: Azriel made the hard call when he had to, but he's feeling pretty guilty about it.
Word Count: 1,610
Category: Angst, Fluff
WARNING: House of Flame and Shadow spoilers below the cut!
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
I swore under my breath as Nesta jammed Ataraxia into the back of the Daglan, the Asteri, whatever it was called. Black blood spurted out of its mouth, but a moment later, the thing—Vesperus—pushed back against the tip of the blade and removed it from her chest. It shouldn't have been possible for something to survive a direct hit like that from Nesta and that sword, but a lot of things from the past few days shouldn't have been possible.
When a fae female had landed in a heap on the River House lawn in front of my mate, I knew we were in for some strange new challenges. But never in a million years could I have predicted the journey she'd led us on through tunnels apparently running all under the Night Court, straight into the heart of the Prison. And now we were facing down one of the most dangerous creatures in the universe, just me, Az, and Nesta, with the female Bryce as an unreliable additional ally.
I tightened my grip on my sword and tried to calm my racing heart as I stood shoulder to shoulder with Azriel. We'd gotten through countless life and death situations together before, but for the first time in a long time, I wasn't sure we'd be able to get out of this one.
Vesperus gave Nesta a horrifying smile as the wound in her chest quickly healed. I glanced to Az, but he kept his eyes locked on the monster before us.
"Ataraxia didn't work," Nesta breathed. "The Trove-"
"Do not summon the Trove," barked my mate. Based on what we knew about this thing before us, I immediately agreed. "Don't bring it near her."
"But-"
"Not even for our lives," he snarled, leaving no room for argument. The same harsh resolve solidified itself in my mind, and I braced myself for the possibility of a last stand. At least if we went down, it would be fighting side by side with my mate.
A flicker of shadows floating softly over my shoulders was the only indication that my mate felt the same. The Daglan grinned, and I got ready to pounce.
****************
Hours later, I sat slumped in my favorite chair in the Velaris townhouse, trying to recover from everything that had happened under the prison. We'd managed to kill the Daglan-Asteri, despite Bryce trying to question it, no matter the risk to our world. But she had gotten away in an impressive display of power, which meant her world's Asteri might have a chance at using her to find us.
Needless to say, when Az, Nesta, and I had made it out of the Prison, we'd had a lot to debrief about with the rest of the Inner Circle.
Nobody was happy about the situation we now found ourselves in, but for the time being, there was also nothing we could do about it. So once we made a basic plan to try to gather information and prepare in case something from that other world came back, we all split off for our separate tasks. Az still had a few things to go over with Rhys, but I was free for the time being, so I'd come to my favorite cozy spot in Velaris to try to come down from the insane adrenaline that had been pumping since Bryce got here.
One perk of Rhys and Feyre building the River House and Nesta keeping Cassian at the House of Wind more often was that the townhouse, my personal favorite location, was often free for Az and I to use as our own. I closed my eyes in my favorite armchair by the fire, still in my fighting leathers, and focused on taking deep breaths to try to get the tension out of my shoulders.
I'd actually almost managed to drift off to sleep when I heard the front door open and shut heavily. I didn't need to look to know Az had just arrived, so with a deep sigh to drag me back from the edge of sleep, I raised my head and turned to look at my mate.
"Everything figured out with Rhys?" I asked. He nodded once, moving into the room with a face like stone. I frowned, sitting up and paying a little better attention as he took a seat on the couch, his gorgeous hazel eyes never leaving mine. "What's wrong?"
A muscle in Az's jaw ticked, and I knew he was mustering a response to my words. Despite his reputation as the unreadable spymaster, all our time together as friends and then as mates had given me a leg up on everyone else who tried to read his expressions.
I stood from my seat in the armchair and moved to sit before Az on the couch instead, taking his hands in mine. His eyes searched my face, and I let a small smile work its way through the exhaustion, trying to put him at ease. He could take however long he needed to, and I'd be ready to listen when he wanted to talk.
"I'm... sorry."
I raised an eyebrow. "For what, exactly?"
That muscle in his jaw was working over time, the rest of his face the same inscrutable mask he'd worked so hard to perfect.
"For what happened in the Prison. For... being willing to let you die down there, rather than risk Nesta summoning the Trove. You deserve a better mate than that."
My jaw dropped, shock preventing me from responding for a few small moments. Az just kept staring at me, and even though his face didn't show it, I could feel the guilt eating him up at his core.
"Az, you have nothing to apologize for!" I finally managed. One of his eyebrows quirked up and he frowned, expressing doubt at my words without speaking one of his own. I huffed and squeezed his hands tighter.
"Listen to me, Azriel. The reason you are my mate is because you made that decision in the Prison. We both know that letting something like that into the world with a weapon like the Mask is an unacceptable option, as long as there is anything in this world we can do to prevent it. If the Daglan or the Asteri or whatever she was had gotten her hands on the mask, it probably would've cost the lives of everyone we've ever cared about, and the rest of this world along with it. Nothing is worth allowing that to happen."
Az ground his jaw, his gaze softening and his eyebrows furrowing as he continued to scan my face.
"Are you... sure? Cassian and Rhys... I think they'd tear the world to shreds for their mates."
I just shrugged. "For what? If the world is gone, if the cost of that choice is absolutely everything else, then what's the point of saving each other in the first place? We'd have nothing left, other than the blood of the world on our hands."
Az grunted, and I shifted closer to him, bringing one hand up to cup his cheek.
"Az. I love you, so much, and a part of that love is because you're not so selfish as to risk throwing the world away for me. Especially since, more likely than not, we'd be dead anyway not long after she got that mask. Neither of us is selfish enough to make a call like that, and I love that about us. The only thing that matters is that we stand together as long as we can, and I knew damn well in the cave that if either of us was going down, we were going down side by side, fighting to our last breath. Obviously I'm happy we both made it out of there, and I'm not saying we shouldn't fight for each other, but that call you made today? I'd be pissed if you'd made a different one."
Az studied me for another second, and I let him see every truth and emotion written in my face. Finally, he sighed, the tension going out of his shoulders as he reached out and pulled me closer to him, arms around my waist. I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck and tangling my hands in his hair. We'd almost died today, and I wasn't about to take the fact that we were both still here together for granted.
"Have I mentioned lately how happy I am to have you as my mate?" Az asked, his voice a little gravelly as he leaned in closer to me. I smiled, leaning forward and letting my lips ghost over his own.
"Yeah, actually, you have. But I'll never complain about hearing it again."
Az smirked, then gently closed the last of that distance between us, his lips brushing softly against mine. I leaned into the kiss, eager for more contact, and I could feel Az's smirk widening right before I deepened the kiss. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me as tight to his body as possible, and I tangled my hands in his hair, letting myself get swept up in him.
I'd meant every word I'd said to my mate, about the choice he'd made and how I felt about it. But I was also incredibly happy it hadn't come down to the cost of our lives, and that we'd made it out of there together. And now that Official Night Court Business had been taken care of, I intended to fully celebrate and appreciate Azriel, and the fact that we were still here together. And I knew he intended to do the same.
HEY CAN WE GET MORE OF SHADOW MILK WITH HYPNOSIS PLEASE IT *SLAPS*
Requested Prompts #27 - 💓
" Oh Reader Cookie~" You could hear Shadow Milk Cookie purr, his arms draped around you like tablecloth upon a table. " Come on... Why not stay for just a little while longer? It gets lonely here..." He pouted, letting his voice as smooth as silk drift into your ears. You of course, payed no heed to the Jester... especially after finding out that he could hypnotize you with just a glance. " You know that I can't," You began with a groan, turning around with closed eyes so you wouldn't look into them on accident. " And I know what you're actually trying to do, nice try, but I'm not freeing you from house arrest." Your eyes drift to the magically affixed bracelet around the Jester's ankle, of course you had been the one to offer yourself up as his warden back in beast yeast... Maybe you shouldn't have. " Siiiiigh.... I can't believe Reader Cookie doesn't want to believe that i just wanna hang out with them." He sighed dramatically, draping himself over the bed in an exaggerated fashion. " They're so mean... Sob sob..." " You did not just seriously say 'sob sob' out loud." You said, opening your eyes to look at him in a flabbergasted manner. That was all it took. He immediately switched up to make eye contact with you, his gleaming blue heterochromatic eyes staring into your own as they began to swirl. " Did I? Or maybe you're just imagining things. Say, we should get that checked out if your hallucinating, yeah?" He suggested, you could feel yourself nodding along already. " Good, now if You'll just remove this-" " I'm kidding, I know I'm not hallucinating." You say, instantly breaking the illusion that you were under his spell. " Wh- What!? How'd you-" " Yeah so it turns out repeated exposure to hypnosis can grant you a bit of a resistance, how funny." You say with a smirk, watching Shadow Milk Cookie's expression turn into a pout. " Anyways, I'll be out for a while. Entertain yourself while I'm gone, I'll be back in a few hours!" You chirp as you leave.
Ominis isn't to happy at Sebastian for using an Unforgiveable Curse on me. Yep it hurt like a bitch. Probably should have listened to Ominis but it is what it is, and we can move on from it (Maybe?)
Dance of Shadows - Chapter IV
Sorry this took so long to update, I spent a lot of time figuring out the timeline and how the story would work with the scenes I wanted to add.
I hope you enjoy it nonetheless! This is a really long chapter which hopefully makes up for the long wait!
Expect a lot more Saenyra&Daemon moments in the next chapter! This chapter was a mix between adding more depth to their relationship, as well as building one between Saenyra and other characters <3
Previous Chapter
Masterlist
Saenyra's heart ached endlessly when the news of Daemon's exile had reached her - she had expected it, of course. But the weight of her mother's death and now the absence of her uncle had become too much to bear.
Her mind fell back to her incidental meetings with the Lord Hand, and of how his words had turned kind despite his cold eyes, since her mother had passed. She understood why the man would be sympathetic to such a thing, having lost his wife to the same burdens of labour as she had lost her mother.
There was a quiet kinship there, a moment of solidarity and understanding.
Perhaps that was why he had come to her chambers today, knocking upon her door and entering with a sullen expression as she beckoned him forth.
Behind his slender form stood the broad figure of Ser Harwin Strong - she had only thought it fair to seek a Shield of her own if Rhaenyra were able to have one. Especially one as pretty as Ser Cole.
Ser Harwin nodded his head in greeting, waiting for her instructions as he stood at attention by her door. She waved the man away, rolling her eyes at his constant worrying.
Saenyra focused on Otto - the Lord Hand looked pale and stricken, eyes unfocused as he tried to string together his words.
The truth was, Otto felt nothing like the image he portrayed to the young girl, but he hoped such a performance would make her grow to trust him.
Those who were unable to see the infatuation the Targaryen girls held for their uncle were truly blind. And Otto would be a fool not to use such a bond to his advantage.
Daemon Targaryen was a dangerous man.
With all the roles within the Keep he had taken, none had sung to him more than the tireless echoes of a title so buoyant and inflamed - the Rogue Prince.
And if Otto wanted Saenyra on his side, then the only way to assure such an alliance was to remove the only person who could change her perspective.
Perhaps this method of madness was mean and trifling, but it would work. It had to.
Otto remembers the look of anguish on Rhaenyra's face when she had heard the news, when she demanded dragons be sent to threaten the man and return what was rightfully their's. He only wished Saenyra would show a reaction so similar.
"Lord Hightower, is everything alright?" Saenyra frowned softly at the man, eyes watching him with concern.
He sighed deeply, "my Princess, I am afraid I come bearing bad news."
Though her stomach sank with dread, her heart beating frantically at all the possibilities and all the horrors that could have occurred, Saenyra steeled her spine and spoke encouragingly, "you can speak freely here."
Again, Otto found his heart tremble with softness at the young girl's kindness. Here, he could not see a shadow of a dragon in sight, simply a girl who had been placed in the nest of animals and beasts.
"It is your uncle, dear child."
Saenyra frowned in earnest now, the mere mention of her uncle bringing back the flashes of the beautiful woman who pressed herself against him as though she were laying her claim. She blinked furiously, scolding herself for such envious feelings - even if that woman had not been there, it did not change the truth that Daemon was still a married man.
Daemon had not cheated her - he had cheated his wife and himself.
"What about my uncle?"
Otto lowered his head in a show of misery, "it seems he has dared to steal the egg of Baelon."
"Why would he do such a thing?" Saenyra's lips had parted in surprise, caught off guard by her uncle's audaciousness with such an act of defiance.
"We are unsure of his motives for the time being," the lie slipped off his tongue with ease. Otto was willing to do all he could to make the girl hate Daemon, but he could not risk her acting out of turn. "But we intend to claim the egg and return it to the Keep - the ships are setting sail soon, and an army rests upon it. Ready to reclaim the egg and Dragonstone by force, if needed."
"I want to come."
Otto sighed softly, not willing to disappoint the girl but knowing he will have to. He could see the anger bubbling in her eyes, but he could also see the confusion etched in her expression.
"Your sister asked us of the very same. I fear you cannot join a feat such as this - it is far too dangerous."
"Perhaps he would listen to me."
"We can only hope, Princess," Otto smiled faintly at her determination, "but it is a risk we cannot take."
Saenyra's hope faltered, hands twisting into the soft material of her gown as she bit her lip to hold back spiteful words.
Otto took a step back, gaining her attention.
"The ships leave soon, so I must take my leave. I simply believed it was important to inform you of our plans, despite the King's disagreement on the matter."
Otto watched as the girl's eyes narrowed in disappointment - had it not been for Otto's visit to her chambers, she would have been kept in the dark on the actions of her uncle.
Her father and her sister would hide such tragic news from her without a guilty conscious.
She glanced at Otto once more as he took his leave, and he smirked at the glimmer in her eyes that shone like something akin to trust.
***
It had not only been trust that gleamed in her lavender hues, but determination.
Her father and sister thought of her as weak, of being spineless and thoughtless. But she would show them. She would show them her determination, her influence, her fire.
Dragonstone was not simply a base Daemon had chosen for its view, no - its caves and tunnels homed the largest dragons - wild and crazed.
Upon the small isle was an opportunity for something more.
***
Saenyra had changed into a set of leathers she had stuffed deep in her wardrobe - they had been a gift from a Lord in a far away land who thought her to be a dragon-rider like her sister. A stark contrast from her usual soft colours, but one she hoped she could grow used to.
Her lip quirked at the idea of riding her dragon in her billowing gowns, and she whispered a promise to herself she would try.
Her heart had always weeped with disappointment at the sight of the leathers, but she never had the heart to get rid of it. It seemed all her waiting had paid off - today, she would get a dragon.
When she had changed into her leathers, she spared a moment to glance upon the jewel resting on her hand. A hesitant smile twisted upon her lips as a speck of dread bloomed.
What would Daemon think of her when he learned she had travelled to the isle to claim a dragon? Would he think differently of her? Would he be proud? Disappointed?
She tiptoed to her chamber doors as quietly as she could, ignoring her nattering thoughts. She latched it shut, hoping Harwin would leave her to her peace and not attempt entry.
Shs slipped back to the portrait above her bed, prying it open with silent breaths before slipping into the tunnels behind. She sprinted her way down tunnels she memorised a thousand times over, finding her way to an exit.
The day was bright and early, and the Keep was buzzing. But no one would expect to see Saenyra of all people in riding gear, as she had no dragon to command.
She slipped through the sea of people with ease, making her way to the ships as she dodged the sight of curious soldiers.
Saenyra knew Otto and the Kingsguard would board the ship at the forefront, so she slinked her way onto one of the smaller ships instead.
She let out a sigh of relief to see it unoccupied for the time being, rushing below the deck to hide in the shadows behind barrels and netting.
She would stay here until they reached Dragonstone.
***
The sail to Dragonstone had been bumpy, her stomach rolling with nausea as she steadied her breaths and pretended she was at home rather than upon the sea.
She swallowed harshly, thirst clawing at her throat as she wondered how much longer it would be.
It seemed only seconds, as her head raised in surprise at the shouts that carried over the ship. They drew closer to Dragonstone now, and she could hear the men prepare to anchor the ships before they continued on foot.
Just a few moments longer.
***
Saenyra had waited until the ships had emptied and the air had struck silent. Her stomach protested as she pushed herself to her feet and her knees ached. Her throat still burned with thirst and she could feel the clawing stabs of hunger pleading with her.
Still, she knew coming by boat was better than the alternative.
She was sure Rhaenyra would find her way here, but Saenyra would be damned if she asked the girl to allow her to ride upon Syrax alongside her.
Saenyra did not want the first dragon she rode to be one that was not her own - she did not want such an experience to be tainted by the hatred and jealousy that soured her relationship to her sister.
As she hiked her way towards where she hoped she would find the entrance to the caves and tunnels, her mind fell back to the dragon she hoped to claim.
Saenyra did not want a dragon that had previously been claimed. She wanted a dragon wild and free. Just as she was.
She wanted a dragon to whom she could love and dote on, to teach not with violence but patience. She wanted a dragon that was a reflection of herself, one that would burn worlds if she asked.
When she had finally reached the mouth of the cave she was panting lightly, her eyes wide with wonder as a breathless laugh escaped her. She sprinted inside, struggling to keep her footfalls quiet so as not to fall prey to any other beast that lurked within.
She spun through the tunnels, twisting and turning but failing to find the dragon she had so desperately tried to seek.
Grey Ghost was a shy dragon, calm and quiet, preferring to spin through the skies and feast in the seas. Hidden away in plain sight much like she was.
Grey Ghost is a dragon Saenyra believed she would bond well with, love strongly and protect fiercely as he would do with her. But Grey Ghost was nowhere to be found.
Her hope of claiming a dragon began to crumble as the tunnels were silent. It seemed the only life within them was her own, and she could feel defeat sink into her bones.
Saenyra sat down in a huff, eyes closed as she rested her head against the rough and craggly surface behind her.
She didn't pay mind to how long she sat like that, thinking - dreaming, hoping.
She only hoped that Harwin had not noticed her absence. Prayed that if he had, he did not report it to the King.
She doubted Viserys would care for such a thing - perhaps he would be relieved he had one less heir to worry about. Rhaenyra and Daemon were already such a handful.
However, for all she knew, the moment her deception was brought to light, a whole new shadow of chaos would be wrought upon them - one, perhaps, even Daemon could not escape.
She was still a Princess. Even if Viserys did not hold any personal regards for the girl, he would have to act in show, lest people see him as weak.
Still, she stayed. She sat upon the solid ground and listened to the sounds of her own breaths, counting every inhale and exhale and wishing she did not have to return to the Keep - knowing when she did, she could never escape the walls that confined her.
Slowly, she began drifting off. She leaned into the comforting smell of a home she would never find - a dragon she could never have.
That was when she felt it.
So lost in the tumultuous thoughts roving through her mind, she hadn't heard the gruff breaths, hadn't felt the quaking thuds. But a rough and scaly surface brushed against her cheek, slowly as though it was almost curious.
It was then she smelt it, the stench of dragon strong and high - the cloying scent of smoke coated her tongue as the brushes became firmer. She allowed herself to hope that perhaps it was Grey Ghost. That although she couldn't find him, he found her and it was a sign.
A sign that she was meant to be a dragon-rider. That the fire of a dragon burned hot through her veins - a raging blaze instead of a waning fire.
But her hesitant eyes found the predatory gaze of a dragon so monsterous it ate its own kind. So close to her, a hair's breadth away, was the slow and steady gaze of a cantankerous beast - Cannibal.
He was an inky shade of black, scales so dark that he could meld into the night sky and would cast envy from the moon, escaping its sight.
The beast reared back, but still stayed so close. Too close.
Saenyra wanted to close her eyes, to resign herself to her fate.
She was no dragon-rider, especially not to a beast so ferocious and violent. She didn't have the strength to make him submit- didn't have the gall.
But there was a subtle glint in Cannibal's eye that made her think wreaking havoc and killing her was not on his agenda.
He inched closer, almost like he was asking a silent question.
Saenyra raised a hand, fingers trembling as she took a steadying breath - the fire of a dragon ran through her veins, the ice of a thousand winters cursed her soul.
She held her breath as the tips of her fingers brushed against Cannibal's face, so close to the edge of his mouth he could break off her arm with a single twitch.
Instead he shuddered, preening as she shuffled closer and began to sit.
Surprise bound through her body, elation colouring her features - had she tamed a dragon?
Had she claimed a bond?
There was no need to violence, no yell for obedience, no fighting and no blood. There was no sacrifice because what was meant for her had come to find her.
Saenyra's eyes welled with tears, a shaky laugh escaping her as it grew louder and steady.
Saenyra had come looking in the depths of darkness for a dragon that lived in the light, hidden amongst clouds and thriving across the seas.
But that was not the fate the Seven had assigned to her. That was not the dragon she needed.
Her dragon, her fate had come to her. Undeterred and knowing.
Her dragon had come to seek her because finally, the time was right.
Her dragon - so fierce and raging and monsterous. The fire she had been missing all her life.
***
Daemon watched Rhaenyra in amusement, barely able to hold back the smirk upon his face at the pathetic attempt to pull him into line.
Had she truly thought she could command him? Call to him?
Had she truly thought he would be soft with her? Kind and adhering?
"I'm right here, Uncle. The object of your ire - the reason you were disinherited. If you wish to be restored as heir, you'll need to kill me. So do it."
Daemon could commend the girl's bravery, perhaps even her stupidity. It was a tempting thought, truly - to end all this fuss and take her head in one quick swipe.
But he was fond of the girl, despite her growing infatuations. She was his niece - his brother's child. And to hurt her would be to hurt Viserys.
"Do not bother with such words, Rhaenyra. It will gain you no favours. You would sooner leave Dragonstone empty-handed than with my undying fidelity."
Daemon couldn't help the smirk that broke across his face as her expression fell - she had been so sure presenting herself to him, a prize upon a platter, would have made him succumb and relinquish the egg.
She was sure he would give up to her. For her.
"Uncle, you do not know what you are saying. This isn't what you want. She isn't who you want."
The words she spoke were true. But not in the way she had hoped.
"Perhaps if little Saena were here, I would be happy to continue this farce for a few moments longer," he grinned at the envious expression that crossed Rhaenyra's face, "it is a pity she is not. I believe she would have enjoyed Dragonstone."
"The Princess is safe at the Keep," Otto began, his words stern as he met Daemon's glare with one just as fierce, "where you shall be unable to find her."
Daemon gritted his teeth at the show of audaciousness, but before he could speak, a set of stumbling footfalls and a shouting voice drew their attention.
"The Princess! She is in Dragonstone!"
A handful of soldiers assigned to watch over their ships had raced up to the base, panting as they waved frantically for Otto's attention.
Rhaenyra rolled her eyes, "yes. Well, if you could not tell, I came by dragon-back. Such fan-fare is quite uneeded."
She turned back to Daemon, ready to push and prod, but the voice continued in panicked insistence.
"No! The Princess is upon the isle. She entered the tunnels before my men could stop her. We followed her in, but we fear she is lost within them."
Daemon's expression of amusement fell, his heart sinking as his stomach twisted. Tumultuous waves of rage washed over him at the realisation of who they spoke of.
Saenyra.
Saenyra was in Dragonstone. And she was lost in the tunnels, surrounded by wild dragons.
He seethed and frothed at the mouth, trembling in anger as he pulled out his sword and raised it against Otto's throat - "you told me she was at the Keep. You told me she was safe!"
Otto's own eyes had widened in surprise, shock flooding his system at the realisation the Princess must have snuck onto a ship to reach Dragonstone.
But why had she gone into the tunnels instead of following them to Daemon?
Otto stumbled over his words, almost speechless at the turn of events. It was Rhaenyra who spoke in his stead, "lower your sword, Uncle. What my sister does out of her own stupidity is no one's fault but her own."
Daemon ground his teeth in frustration, lowering his sword from Otto's throat only to throw a dangerous glare at Rhaenyra instead - "your sister is lost within the tunnels where dragons feed upon everything with a heartbeat, and you stand here and mock her? You are heartless."
Rhaenyra's face fell, her own heart now stammering with fear as she realised there was a truth to Daemon's words. She had lost her mother such a short time ago, could she truly lose her sister now, too?
"If she is hurt- if she is scared, I will kill you all. I will slaughter you all, and I will show Viserys the truth of my brutality. If there is so much as a scratch up-"
His words came to an abrupt end, halting mid-sentence at the sound of a victorious cry.
Daemon watched in fascination as a black mass emerged from the lip of a cave, climbing high into the sky as it unleashed a violent burst of green flames into the sunlit sky.
He could hear gleeful shrieks and melodic laughter from where he stood, and he could feel the ground shake as a monsterous beast rumbled from its place confined deep within the tunnels.
The violent beast flew overhead, murmurs spreading across as they all watched in fascination as the dragonless princess rode upon the most horrid beast of all and laughed.
There was a softness there, still present despite the beast she rode. One that sounded in her voice and in her laughter. One that sang in her eyes as they crinkled with joy.
Saenyra had conquered a dragon, but she had not lost herself in doing so.
Cannibal circled over Daemon and his army, and Daemon watched in amusement as Otto and his men backed up as far as they could.
Cannibal landed with a quiet thud, his rider grinning with excitement and pride exuding off of her in pretty waves. She slid from his back, scratching his neck as she murmured praises to the beast.
Daemon watched the scene unfold with soft eyes, his heart swelling with pride as he watched Saenyra fret over a vicious beast who submitted to her freely and with ease.
He took a step forward, uncaring of the watchful eyes and bated breaths of those around him.
Saenyra caught his gaze, a gasping laugh sounding from her lips as she moved to meet him halfway. But a glance over his shoulder had her stumbling to a stop.
Daemon knew who she had seen and couldn't stop the guilt that stung his throat and left a bitter taste.
"Rijes aōt, zaldrītsos (congratulations, little dragon)."
Daemon's words were gentle but hesitant. Saenyra could not find it within herself to meet his gaze.
She took a steadying breath, eyes passing over him with great difficulty as she sought the calming gaze of the Lord Hand instead.
Otto nodded to the girl as she eyed him in quiet despair - "Prince Daemon," he began, so quietly Daemon prayed Saenyra could not hear him, "has stolen the dragon egg as a gift to his heir."
Saenyra's eyes flitted back to Daemon as they welled with a betrayal she had no right to feel. And yet, from Daemon's worried gaze and guilty heart, she could not help but feel that perhaps it was not all in her mind, after all.
"His whore, Mysaria is with child. And Daemon is to take her as a second wife."
As Otto concluded his words, he could see how the girl's shoulders tensed and her spine stiffened - he hadn't expected to unveil the truth to her, but as she stared at her uncle with poorly hidden anger he found that it was probably the smartest move he had made.
Saenyra couldn't help but glance at her sister and see how her shoulders had deflated with defeat and how Rhaenyra could not meet her gaze.
Despite everything she had heard, despite the tears that pooled in her eyes and despite the hopes she had hidden deep within her heart that had caved and crumbled, she stepped forward. She closed the gap between Daemon and herself with a stifling sense of formality.
Saenyra stood before him in the image of a poised princess, a stiff smile upon her face as she searched his eyes for something.
They glinted and gleamed and grew dark under her stare, as though he was trying to force every word he could not say aloud into her mind.
"Tepagon se zaldrīzes drōmon, kepus. Let us be done with this. (Give the dragon egg, uncle)."
"Daor (no)."
His voice was quiet - his eyes pleading.
Her breath caught in her throat for a moment, her mind knowing what it was he wanted - what he needed. But her heart was too fragile to concede.
"Ivestragon nyke skoros nyke jorrāelagon naejot rȳbagon (tell me what I need to hear)."
Daemon did not care if Rhaenyra heard him, did not care if the others understood.
He would be exiled, unable to see Saenyra anymore. He knew although he could succeed in this battle, the game of politics that would follow would not work in his favour.
Too many men had sworn their allegiance to Viserys, and now his newest heir - Rhaenyra.
She gave him a strained smile in return, "I cannot upset your wife."
"Ōdrikagon zirȳla mirre ao hae, issa daorun naejot nyke (hurt her all you like, she is nothing to me)."
"And what about me?"
"Brōzagon naejot nyke (call to me)."
Such words were a promise in themselves, a claim if one wished it to be. And from the glimmering darkness in Daemon's eyes, singing with desperation and anger and a plea for understanding, Saenyra let herself reluctantly hope it was.
"Kepus, give me Baelon's egg."
"Kostilus (please)."
"Daemon."
The name came out in a quiet rush, a hushed confession.
His breath caught in his throat, a raging heat battling through his body as his heart trembled and his body singed with relief.
"Daemon," she whispered again, looking into his eyes so pleadingly, "give it to me, Daemon. Prove it to me."
Daemon was ready to kneel for her should she ask it of him. He handed the egg over readily, the fight leaving his body with the same rolling ease his name dripped off her tongue in such erotic rivulets.
As she reached out to take the egg from his grasp, he allowed his fingers to trail over her trembling hands. He rubbed his thumb over the ring she still wore, despite his misgivings, despite his harshness and despite his exile.
She wore this piece of him with pride and adoration. Such a sight made his heart sting with grief, knowing he would have to leave her behind. Knowing he had done nothing but made everything worse.
It had been amusing, yes. It had been a show of power, a show of all the cards he held. But now he knew it was almost over - the Gold Cloaks would retreat and return to King's Landing, and he would be exiled. Never to return, if Otto had it his way.
Saenyra stepped away from him, pulling her hands back as his own fell to his sides.
He sighed as though he was amused and steps closer, hand reaching for her chin as he tilted her head up to meet his warring gaze. He smiles, so gentle and so soft and so kind.
Daemon closes his eyes, placing a soft kiss upon her head and breathing in the scent of her - he would be exiled in truth now, unable to return for years if it was what his brother wished. He would only have this memory of his lips against her skin, his nose buried in the scent of her hair, his hands digging into her soft flesh.
He murmured a promise against her, his voice hushed so no one else could hear - "Nyke kessa māzigon arlī. Kesan māzigon arlī naejot ao. Se pār, kesi kipagon īlva zaldrīzoti naejot ūndegon qilōni's iksis se sȳrje. (I shall come back. I will come back to you. And then, we will ride our dragons to see who's is the best)."
Her eyes fluttered closed at his claim, "kivio? (Promise?)"
"Kivio."
She stepped back from the man, her eyes meeting his in silent mourning. She held the egg close to her chest as she made her way back to her dragon and mounted him, lips pursed as she tried to hold back her tears at the realisation she would likely never see Daemon again.
***
Saenyra returned to the Keep upon dragon-back, soaring the sky with a mourning sense of enjoyment. Perhaps she would not see Daemon again, but her ventures had gained her a dragon.
And such a gift was not one she would be ungrateful for.
Still, she was inexperienced upon dragon-back. Though her beast was adept and gifted with a masterful skill at flight, she had never soared the skies upon a dragon, let alone one so large.
It did not take long for Rhaenyra to catch up to her savage dragon, and it took even less time for her to soar past them and glare down at her with contempt flooding her gaze.
Saenyra grew worried as she drew closer to the Keep - the sky had darkened as a clouded mist settled low on to the soil. She grew anxious as she landed Cannibal on the grounds, eyes flitting across the planes in search of the Lords and Ladies, maids and knights that haunted the Keep, only to see it bare of life.
Cannibal flew off at her beckoning, never one to be tied down to a place so small but ready to find her if she were to call.
She entered the walls of the Keep, the corridors silent as she tiptoed to her room. She slipped into the closest tunnel she could find, her footsteps rushed as she made her way to her chambers.
She knew the secret of her travels would be revealed with Otto's return. Until then, she would take advantage of what she hoped to be Harwin's discretion and the King's ignorance and take a well-deserved rest.
***
It was not long until a flurry of frantic knocks sounded against her chamber doors - she sat up in a hurry, the sheets slipping off of her as all she remained in was the sheer material of her nightdress.
Saenyra stumbled out of her bed, reaching for the latch only to be faced by Alicent.
The girl looked worried, her eyes full of sadness as she frowned at Saenyra softly.
"The King is asking for your attendance at the Counsel, this evening."
Her brows furrowed in confusion, "Father has never asked for my presence at his meetings. Did something happen?"
Had Daemon acted out of turn once again? Had he returned to the Keep despite his exile? Has her father truly grown so angry by her travels outside the Keep?
She was unsure, and unwilling to seek answers to such questions.
"You must come at once, Princess. I fear I am not at liberty to answer your queries."
Saenyra nodded in ascent, understanding Alicent coming to retrieve her may have been a leniency on behalf of her father as well as a well-devised ploy.
She turned back to grab a dressing robe, wrapping it tightly over her bodice as she nodded for Alicent to lead the way. Alicent conceded with one last hesitant glance at the girl.
When they had reached the hall where her father held his Counsel meetings, the doors parted to reveal a truly formidable sight.
Upon his seat, though weakened by his ailings, Viserys was seething - frothing at the mouth as a well-groomed Lord stood beside him with a predatory grin.
It had taken Saenyra only a glance at Rhaenyra's proud face and Otto's sorrowful expression to learn what truth came to light.
Her lips parted, an apology sitting upon the tip of her tongue before her father's brash voice cut off her musings - "here we have her," a dragon's rage pooled in his veins, "my youngest daughter."
"Father..."
She was unsure of what she could have said - the placative words she could have spoken. But Viserys paid her no mind.
"Princess Saenyra is to be your wife, Lord Byrch." Viserys' eyes met his daughters, sharp and unforgiving as he recalled the conversations Rhaenyra whispered in his ears that took place between his youngest daughter and his devious brother - "you are to wed and take my daughter to your lands where she will swell with your children and make me a happy grandsire."
Her eyes burned as his words echoed in her mind, heart sinking in betrayal as she glanced towards Rhaenyra who spoke with a smug tone, "congratulations, dear sister."
Saenyra could hear no more talk of the betrayal that had just taken place, could no longer restrain her cries or hold back her tears.
As the Lord Byrch stepped closer to his awaiting bride, the girl stumbled back as she fled from the room in a flood of emotions.
Viserys' boisterous laughs could be heard echoing through the Keep, "she is but a shy girl, Byrch. Take no offence, you shall get your bride. That I promise."
***
Saenyra did not leave her chamber for several days - taking to dining within the walls of her room where she was safe and away from her traitorous sister and looming husband-to-be.
In those days, it was only Otto whom she allowed to seek her audience; even Harwin, now her Shield and Commander of the Gold Cloaks, barely caught a glimpse of the girl when he would assign his men to keep watch over her.
The man would whisper his disapprovals of the King's decision, acting wary of listening ears and speaking in hushed anger. He would weave tales of her bethrothed's violent nature and greedy hands, of his narrow mind and stubborn heart.
He had laughed as he suggested that the death of her betrothed may be her only saving grace - as though such a proposition was preposterous and only made in jest.
Otto had ingrained upon her an expectation for a horrid future - unloved and hurt and bred like an animal.
That was the life Viserys had chosen for her, and such a realisation wrought her soul with anger and agony. She had known Rhaenyra was the favourite, but to cast Saenyra aside in such a manner made her feel truly unworthy in his eyes.
Perhaps this was why - angered by her father's aversion and terrified by Otto's quiet truths - she had found herself in such a position.
Otto had encouraged the girl to escape the confines of her room, to walk along the corridors of the Keep and, at the very least, find enjoyment in the activities she used to before.
She had agreed, reluctantly. And that very night, she left her rooms through the tunnel, unwilling to be trailed by soldiers that belonged to both Harwin and Daemon.
She found herself in the library, fingers skimming across the spine of large tomes and story books. Her touch was light and airy, her mind quiet in the comfort of the night sky.
But the sound of footfalls drawing closer had her grow keenly wary of her surroundings.
She turned in anticipation, hand falling to her side as she came face-to-face with the man she had been avoiding all this time.
Oh, how the needy and desperate whispers of her mind grew louder wishing it was Daemon she saw.
Instead, in front of her stood the slim and staggering figure of Lord Byrch. There was a grim smirk upon his lips, his voice hushed as he whispered, "my little bride. Oh, how I have been searching for you in all the crevices in the Keep."
She smiled stiffly, "my Lord."
She stepped back, nodding to be polite as she searched for a way around the man and to the door.
There was no escape.
He stepped closer, hands clamping around her waist as he pulled her towards him - so close she could smell the scent of strong ale permeating from his lips.
The man was shameless and crude, stuffing his face into the hollow of her throat as he took deep breaths and groaned roughly at her sweet scent.
Her hands came to push against his shoulders, but the man did not relent. He stumbled forward so he could press her against a table and lave at the delicate skin of her neck.
He hummed at the taste of her, groaning in her ear in a fervent breath - "I cannot wait to make you my bride and fuck you. I cannot wait to fill you with my children and make sure you never leave my bed without my cum dripping from that sweet cunt of your's."
She cried out in disgust, her hands reaching back to brace herself against the table as he grew hurried and frantic. He began to pull up the fabric of her dress, her heart sinking in dread as her eyes stung with tears.
Her hands reached for something, grasping at anything she could use to scare this monster away.
Her fingers wrapped around a thin and delicate item, and it only took a glance back to see the silver sheen of a letter opener held tight in her grasp.
It was at the sight of such a lacklustre weapon hope began to bubble in the pit of her stomach as her breath was stolen from her in preparation of such a feat - an opportunity.
Her heart sung with rage as a guttural cry escaped her, and the weapon in her hand found its place in his shoulder. The foul beast of a man reared back, and as he cried out in agony, she could hear a fierce cry shatter through the quiet of the night as though it shared in her pain and agony - Cannibal.
At the sound of his angered roars, she felt the dragon within her come to life, a disastrous blaze flooding through her as rage took over fear.
Saenyra was angry.
So angry.
Angry at Daemon. At her sister. At her father. And this pathetic excuse of a man who thought himself worthy of marrying her. Of touching her.
With a battle cry, she ripped the blade from his flesh, throwing herself at him and knocking him to the ground as her body moved with a mind of its own. She wailed upon the man as her screams gave way to mourning cries and the aches of a thousand days washed upon her and all the agony she felt, all the grief, was poured into a deserving beast.
Hands wrapped around her body, her dress tainted red as blood seeped deep into her clothes and burned her skin with feral delight. She fought against the touch, reaching forward after her prey as her mind went mad with hunger.
The arms only held her tighter, wrenching the blade from her grasp and casting it aside as they turned her towards a solid chest and hushed quietly in her ears.
Her breaths came back to her in quiet huffs, her racing heart settled as it was finally quiet once again.
"Princess," Saenyra stiffened at the voice, eyes glancing up to meet the determined gaze of the Shield she had escaped for far too long.
Harwin met her gaze, determination giving way to a kind softness as he frowned softly at the blood splattered against the girl's face. His hands reached up to her face, rubbing against the wet liquid and smearing it across her cheeks, making her seem like a blushing bride who awaited eagerly for her husband's embrace.
But Lord Byrch was dead.
His body mutilated, his face unrecognisable.
Harwin felt his own heart race in anger at the thought that the Princess would have been hurt whilst under his charge, his protection.
He gritted his teeth as he strained his mind for a plan - "I accompanied you to the library," he began, his voice lowered and his words fast as his eyes darted towards the door, hoping it would be his Gold Cloaks who arrived first and not the Kingsguards.
"Then Lord Byrch came and asked for a listening ear - which you granted him. He spoke of treasonous plans after your wedding, and when you refused, he grew mad. So I killed him."
She eyed the soldier in fascination, wondering why he would lie on her behalf about a deed so grave.
"I killed him. Did you hear me, Princess?"
She held her breath as she nodded, confusion still clouding her eyes.
"Repeat it back to me."
She began in a whisper, hands tightening around his arms as she continued, "you killed him. You killed him because he planned to act against my father. He was going to hurt me, so you killed him."
"Good. Good, you're doing so well. Leave this to me, I shall handle this."
"Harwin," her voice shook as she protested such a thing, tears tracking down her face as her hands trembled at the realisation of what she had done.
Saenyra had killed a Lord. She had murdered her intended husband.
But he had deserved it.
Still, she had taken a life.
"I am your sworn Shield. When I took such a position, I vowed to protect you with every inch of life I have within me. Allow me to do my duty, Princess. Allow me to protect you."
Saenyra threw her arms around his neck, heaving sobs against him as he held her tight and turned her away from the gruesome scene she had created.
Otto had found them in such a position only moments later, eyes growing dark with understanding as he realised what must have occured.
It was safe to say Harwin escaped with such a deed unpunished, and Saenyra grew to trust her Shield just as she grew to trust Otto.
Her heart grew discontent to sit with her sister and listen to her father's demands, but even her disheartened feelings towards them would not stop the fact her father sought another husband for the girl to wed.
Saenyra could only hope he failed in such a mission of his.
Saenyra could only hope Daemon would return before Viserys succeeded in his ventures, and Rhaenyra celebrated her departure.
Thank you to everyone who enaged with this series, I cannot wait to write more chapters!!
Out of every book boyfriend, no boyfriend wears their heart on their sleeve quite like Hunt Athalar.
He may not have the fancy words of Rhys, but he’s got more than enough of the passion.
Whether is shouting ‘say it to my face you coward.’ Or turning into a literal bolt of lightning TWICE because Bryce was threatened. Or filling every single room he went in with so much negative energy, Celestina couldn’t stand his face anymore.
Now, that’s how I want my man to act. What a king you are Hunt. All hail that tase-y tongue of yours.
I fucking Need You (Ruhn Danaan)
Summary: You and Ruhn break up for good after he said things that hurt you to the fire and he begs you to come back.
Words: 2.7k
Requested: Yes
Warnings or A/N: I forgot to add in. He was acting like a dick because his dad was putting pressure on him and he took it out on the wrong person.
"I understand that you're the crown prince, but could you please lend a hand around the house? It shouldn't just be me, Dec, and Flynn doing all the cleaning," you said, tossing one of his shirts on him. "I'm not your maid, I'm your girlfriend,"
Ruhn casually placed the shirt on the chair and replied, "I'll do it later,"
"That's what you always say, but you never do," you retorted.
Turning away from you, Ruhn headed towards the shower. "I said I'll do it later," he repeated.
"Ruhn," you called after him.
He simply waved you off before disappearing behind the bathroom door.
You couldn't help but mutter to yourself, "You've got to be kidding me."
Grabbing your books and bag, you made your way downstairs, where Dec and Flynn were engrossed in a TV show. "Have a good day at class, Tater Tot," Flynn teased.
☾⋆。𖦹 °✩⋆
Upon arriving home from work and classes, the house was booming with music. As you entered, you were greeted with the sight of people making out on the couch, and others practically fucking in the corner. Although you didn't mind the boys having parties in their own house and that they could do whatever they pleased, you simply didn't have the energy to join the party all night long, especially after a stressful day at work.
Rolling your eyes, you made your way up the stairs towards the room you shared with Ruhn, but your arm was grasped by his hand. Turning to face Ruhn, you could tell from his glazed eyes and broad smile that he was clearly high. "Where are you going, baby?"
"Upstairs, because I don't want to party tonight,” You calmly replied.
"Yeah, because you're such a fucking bitch," he retorted.
His words struck a chord within you. “I'm a stuck up bitch because I don't want to party one fucking time? I had a long fucking day of work and class,” You questioned, anger filling your veins.
"You're a bitch because all you do is nag and complain," he alleged.
Slightly exasperated, I responded, "I don't want to do this with you at the moment. We can fight in the morning like always,"
"No, let's do it right here," Ruhn insisted, his arms crossed defiantly.
“Really? Here and now? In front of everyone?" I sighed.
"Yes, so that this time everyone will know what happened. You bitch at this morning because I had left a single dirty shirt on the floor," he countered.
"If it were only that one minor thing, I would not have. It's frustrating because you hardly contribute to the household chores, unlike Flynn, Dec, and myself," I argued.
"In that case, maybe you should go to fuck Flynn," he snapped retortedly.
"What?"
"I am the Crown Prince of the Valbaran Fae, and I don't need some half-breed bitch telling me what to do in my own house," he callously declared.
That statement shattered what was left of your heart into tiny fragments. "I am done from the same fights, Ruhn. I am done, completely and utterly done. This time, we are over for good. Go fuck that faun who has been lusting after you for the past few months," You screamed in his face.
Maybe I will," he shot back.
"You are free fuck who you please," You yelled back, walking upstairs to gather your belongings.
You didn't have many possessions since you had only recently started fresh when you moved in with Ruhn a few weeks ago. This time, you didn't shed any tears. Over the past few months, you had countless fights and breakups, which were the times that brought you to tears. However, what Ruhn said tonight, referring to you as a "half-breed bitch," was the final straw for you.
You swiftly packed your belongings into your suitcase, forcefully removed the R necklace that Ruhn had given you on your one-year anniversary, and threw it onto the dresser. You didn't care if people stared or whispered as you walked towards the door with your things. Let them talk and say whatever they wanted, because ultimately, it was you who chose to permanently end the relationship with the crown prince.
☾⋆。𖦹 °✩⋆
Ruhn woke up to a throbbing headache, regretting his actions once again. As he sat up in bed, he absentmindedly rubbed his forehead and glanced over to your side, only to find that you were not there. This was not unusual, as you always had early morning shifts. Unconcerned, he got out of bed and discarded his clothes on his way to the bathroom for a soothing shower.
Covering his body and hair with soap, he tried to recall the events of the previous night, but it was all a haze. He couldn't remember a single detail, not even if he had seen you come home.
After completing his shower, Ruhn returned to the bedroom, wrapped in a towel. As he approached the dresser, his eyes noticed your broken chain necklace and picked it up. He noticed that all of your belongings on the dresser were missing.
Placing the broken necklace back, he anxiously opened the drawers that belonged to you, only to find them empty. His heart raced. Rushing back to the bathroom, he switched on the light to discover that all traces of your makeup, perfumes, and personal items were gone. Returning to the room, he searched frantically, realizing that every trace of you were gone. In that moment, his heart shattered. You and him must have gotten into a fight last night and a pretty bad one if you took all of your things.
Without wasting any time, he hastily got dressed and dashed downstairs, only to find Dec and Flynn tidying up the aftermath of last night's party. Their eyes remained fixed on their task, refusing to acknowledge his presence. "What happened last night?"
No response followed, so he attempted once more. "All of (Yn)'s belongings are missing."
This time, both Dec and Flynn glanced up but exchanged loaded looks before resuming their cleaning duties. If they were deliberately withholding information from him, then he must have done something horrible. "Guys, please tell me where my girlfriend's things are."
Flynn snickered, and Declan scoffed disdainfully.
"What was that all about?"
Flynn sighed before finally meeting his gaze. "Don't you remember what you said to her last night?" Declan's words dripped with venom.
His heart plummeted to his stomach. If Dec addressed him with such fury, it must have been something awful.
"Do you have any idea how much I want to leap over this couch and beat the shit out of you right now?" Flynn added.
His stomach churned with anxiety. Whatever he had done, it was a really big mistake. Dec and Flynn were fiercely protective of you, ready to defend you against anyone who hurt you. "What did I do?"
"Does 'fucking bitch' and 'half-breed bitch' ring a bell?"
He took a deep breath, struggling to recollect his actions from the previous night. "I didn't call her a half-breed bitch, did I?"
"More like 'I am the Crown Prince of the Valbaran Fae, and I don't need some half-breed bitch telling me what to do in my own house.' You fucked up, Danaan," Flynn replied, tossing a red solo cup into the trash bag.
Dec chimed in, picking up another cup and disposing of it. "You also told her that she could go fuck Flynn."
"Yeah, she broke up with you for good. We are done with how you treat her. She is the best thing that has happened to you. All she wants from you is effort in chores. Go and try to fix things with her or we'll move out,” Flynn added.
Ruhn's head throbbed as he attempted to recall the events of the previous night, but the memories escaped him. He couldn't have uttered those words. You being a half-breed was never an issue for Ruhn. He cherished every part of you. It was a part of what made you, you. But in that moment, he had carelessly used something that he knew you struggled with as a weapon to hurt you.
Desperation clawed at his soul as he searched for a way to mend what he had broken. He knew apologies were no longer enough, that actions spoke louder than words.
☾⋆。𖦹 °✩⋆
It has been seven days since you ended things with Ruhn once and for all. Despite his relentless texts and visits to your doorstep, you have made a conscious decision to ignore both your phone and the doorbell. Deep down, you understand that giving in to his advances would only lead you back to a place you are determined to move on from. You are committed to holding yourself to a higher standard, no matter how difficult it may be.
The ache was still there in your heart. Ruhn’s words had cut deep within you. He knew just how insecure you are about you being a half-breed.
The memories of the past few months played like a broken record in your mind. The countless times you had separated, just to get back together again, hoping that each time would be different. As you neared the car parking lot from CCU, you spotted Ruhn walking in the opposite direction. "(Name)," you called out, trying to maintain a steady tone.
"What are you doing here, Danaan?" you asked.
"I wanted to apologize for my words," Ruhn replied, his expression reflecting genuine regret.
"I'm not interested in hearing it," you responded, brushing past him and heading towards your car. "I meant what I said last night, unless you were too out of it to remember."
"Flynn and Declan filled me in on what happened. Please, just listen," Ruhn pleaded, reaching out to grab your arm. "I truly am sorry for what I said."
"You used a half-breed bitch against me, knowing how much it would hurt," you retorted. "And now you expect me to forgive you?"
"I was high on Mirthroot, I didn't mean it," Ruhn explained. "Your heritage doesn't matter to me, you know that."
You couldn't help but roll your eyes at his excuse. It was clear that he didn't understand the depth of your hurt.
“I didn't have the same support system as Bryce. I didn't have a pack of wolves or a Crown Prince looking out for me when I was growing up. I had to face insults from faes and humans alike, constantly being called a worthless half-breed or half-breed whore. And you knew all of this, yet you still used it against me. I don't care if you were high. I've known people who were completely out of it and they never stooped to insulting their friends or loved ones like you did,” you explained, your voice filled with hurt and anger.
"(Name)-"
"No, I've had enough. I have put up with a lot from you, but calling me a half-breed bitch was the last straw," you stated firmly, walking away and leaving Ruhn standing there in silence.
Ruhn ran after you, falling to his knees with tears in his eyes, pleading, "Please, I'm truly sorry, baby.”
You stopped in your tracks, watching Ruhn drop to his knees. A part of you wanted to give in, to forgive him and take him back into your arms. But another part of you held firm, remembering all the hurt and disrespect you had endured.
Taking a deep breath, you faced Ruhn, his desperate gaze locked on you. The tears in his eyes mirrored the ache in your heart.
"Ruhn, I can't do this anymore," you said, your voice steady but filled with emotion. "I can't keep going back and forth with you, hoping things will change. The trust is broken, the respect is gone."
Ruhn's shoulders shook with sobs as he struggled to hold back his tears. "I love you, (Name). I know I've messed up, I know I've hurt you. But please, give me ione last chance. I will do whatever it takes to make things right, to earn back your trust."
You looked into his eyes, seeing the vulnerability and sincerity in them. You knew that a part of you still loved him, still hoped for a future with him.
"I'm not sure if I can do this, Ruhn," you whispered before he took your hand and led you through the busy campus.
Eventually, you arrived at a busy gathering area where Ruhn raised his voice to get everyone's attention. "Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce you to someone," Ruhn declared with a smile. Your heart pounded with anticipation as he turned towards you and proudly announced. "This incredible woman before you is not only the love of my life, but also the most beautiful, kind-hearted, patient, and brilliant individual you will ever meet - (Name) (Last Name). As some of you might know, I said some things last night and they were not a true reflection of my feelings," Ruhn began, his voice steady and sincere. "I want to make it clear that her being a half-breed doesn't negate that. She is my soulmate, my everything, and I vow to make sure she knows that,”
"Ruhn, do you honestly believe this will make a difference? You're speaking to me as if you're delivering a formal address," you remarked.
"You want real?" he asked.
"Yes," you replied.
"Then I'll give it to you," Ruhn said as he knelt before you.
You maintained a steady gaze as Ruhn knelt before you, the onlookers around hoping for something different than what you expected. The weight of his words hung heavy in the air as he spoke. The skepticism that had been building within you seemed to gain more ground with each passing moment. Your instincts told you to brace yourself for what was to come next.
Ruhn's eyes locked with yours as he spoke, his voice steady and sincere. There was a hint of vulnerability in his tone, a crack in the facade that he had carefully constructed. Despite the grand gesture unfolding before you, there was still a lingering doubt in your mind. The onlookers may have hoped for a proposal, but you knew better than that.
"I know I've been acting like an asshole lately, and I'll explain why if you give me a chance to explain that to you in private but I shouldn't have taken it out on the one person who means more to me than anyone else. You've been incredibly patient with me, and I appreciate that. I'm willing to give up partying, even the Mirthroot and the star sword, if it means you'll give me another chance," he declared.
Tears welled up in your eyes as Ruhn poured his heart out in front of everyone, fully aware that someone was likely recording the moment. "You know someone's probably recording this, and your dad is going to be pissed that you mentioned giving up the star sword, especially for a half-breed," you whispered.
"I don't give a fuck. You're the only one that matters to me. This past week has been absolute hell without being able to see you, talk to you, touch you, fuck you. I'd dream of you and wake up, hard as fuck and unable to do anything about it because you weren't there beside me. Everyone thinks you need me, but the truth is, I need you more than you need me. And you fuck me in ways I can't even put into words. I mean, I always come before you anyway," Ruhn confessed.
"Not that you don't fuck me good, because you do. I just fuck you better," you replied.
"You do. Please, give me another chance. I'll be your servant if that's what it takes-”
"I don't want a servant. I want the Ruhn I fell in love with, the one from a few months ago. I want you to be that person again, not this version who doesn't realize the pain he's causing. If you can promise me that you'll go back to being him, then yes, I will take you back," you stated firmly.
Ruhn's face lit up with a smile. "Yes. A thousand times, yes," he declared.
"Then get up and kiss me," you commanded.
Ruhn swiftly rose to his feet, cupped your face in his hands, and kissed you passionately, pouring all his emotions from the past week into the kiss. "Take me home so I can fuck you," you whispered, your lips just inches from his.
"You could have flown away A singing bird in an open cage Who will only fly, only fly for freedom..." - "Walk On" U2
A/N: This is my spin on Beauty & the Beast. Edward, at the beginning of the story, has the condition neurofibromatosis as he does in the film. But this isn't going to be used in a negative way, nor are we going to include depictions of him being mistreated by others as a result. (Edward has structured his life in a way to avoid that.)
As you were reading over the short list of rentals into today's paper, you felt your frustation rising. Were you going to find another place to live before you had to leave your current apartment?
It had been a long few years.
You graduated high school, started college pursuing a degree in business.Your first year in the MBA program was at the smaller Michigan university not far from your hometown. Your grades had been fine. You just realized after five years of business you didn't feel anything about it, one way or another. Did you really want to spend your life like that?
You took a gap year, working part time jobs to pay your bills and to keep your tiny, dark little apartment. You'd started working as a kennel assistant at a local veterinarian's office and what do you know? You found something you loved doing. Sure, you started out walking dogs, scooping poop, and cleaning kennels. But after a few months, you were trusted with other tasks in the clinic. You helped pull kittens or puppies when there was an expectant mother, you looked after animals boarded there. You helped put together prescriptions, sometimes helped the receptionists get vacations or personal days.
It was an easy choice, you were going back to school. The vet-med program was in Virginia but in four years, you'd earn a DVM. It was a job that you knew you'd appreciate and that would allow you to make a real difference.
The problem was, now you were heading for thirty and the student loans were piling up. After two years in the program, you earned a two-year technician's degree. It was as good a time as any to get some work in the field and pay some of that debt down.
The veterinary hospital in the small Virginia town was even nicer than the first one you'd worked in back home. It was female-owned with three female doctors, two other techs who were guys, and a competent staff of receptionists, kennel assistants, and even a couple of volunteers. After six months, your job there just fortified your desire to achieve a career as a veterinary doctor.
The problem? Living spaces.
You knew the apartment in the old -- really old -- boarding house was probably a risk. The building was a hundred and twenty-five years old, there were drafts, creaking floors, and leaks from the ceiling when it rained. The electric wiring needed repairs often.
When you received the notice that the building where you lived was being condemned, you panicked. You had just a month to make other arrangements which meant your living conditions probably weren't safe. But its affordable rent had really helped you put some money back.
Where were you supposed to go now?
When someone called your name the next day in the break room, you walked in to see Dave, one of the other techs, sitting at the table eating the lunch he'd packed and scrolling on his phone. He looked at you expectantly when he spotted you.
"Weren't you looking for a place to live?" he asked.
"Sure am," you told him.
"There's an ad in the marketplace," he told you, looking back to his phone. "Room for rent. Looking for someone to help with shopping and small errands. In exchange, will rent space: a bedroom, office or living room, and full bath. Kitchen and laundry can be shared."
When Dave read the address and the rent price per month, you were floored. It sounded like an elderly person looking for a housemate to help them with shopping or cleaning. That would be perfect for you and it was just fifteen minutes away from the hospital.
"Can you send me that?" you asked him. "When was it posted?"
Dave took another look at the ad he'd read to you. "Says it was posted today."
"Perfect! Thank you," you told him.
Grabbing your phone from your locker, you were going to call right now. Hopefully, it was still available. It had the potential to be a really good deal for you.
Your call went straight to voicemail. A digital voice told you to leave your message at the tone. You did. You probably sounded like an idiot, but you quickly asked if they could call you back about the rental. You left your number and name.
And then nothing. At the end of your shift, there were no messages. The next day, no return call. The day after that? Nothing.
Damn, someone beat you to it.
You spent the weekend doing laundry and boxing things up. You did your normal search each day in the papers, marketplaces. Maybe something you could afford would come up. You had two weeks now. You were gettting desperate.
You'd been home for maybe an hour Monday when the chime of your phone had you fishing it out of your purse to see who it was. The number was private but since you'd called to ask about another apartment this morning, you assumed it was them.
A deep, rough male voice asked to speak with you. When you confirmed it was you, he mentioned his house on Garden Street. You were floored! It was the house from the ad Dave told you about, the one where the owner was looking for help and offering a really affordable price.
"Yes," you responded. "I am very interested in your ad."
"Do you live in the area?" he asked.
His voice was strange. He didn't sound old per se. It was hard to tell. His voice was rough and sounded a little garbled. You had a little trouble understanding him. But there was no way in hell you were going say that. You wanted what he was offering.
You explained your situation and the urgency of it. Then you told him you appreciated his consideration. There was a long moment when he didn't say anything. Was he still there? Was he considering your case?
"I'd like to interview you," he said finally. "Tomorrow."
Really? "Okay, I can do that," you said. "What's a good time?"
Whatever you needed to do, you'd do it. Take the evening off from work even.
"Come at eight-thirty," he said after a long pause.
"In the morning?" You wanted to make sure you got it right.
"No, tomorrow evening," he said. "I'll text you the address."
Okay. It was a little odd. But you needed a place to live. "I'll be there," you told him.
When you got off the phone, when you went to  bed, you could rest easier. Sure, there was a chance that you wouldn't get the place. But there was just as much of a chance that you would. You got a good night's sleep.
***
Nerves were about to get the best of you as headed down that narrow dirt road in your car, pulling up to what looked like an old southern mansion. Twilight still clung to the deepening colors on the horizon and there was just enough light left to hint at a magnificent old house, a few of the first floor windows were lit up with soft light. There was a huge, elegant weeping willow tree in the front yard and what looked like huge flower beds on either side of the ornate front porch, their colors swallowed by the night.
Summoning your courage, you climbed out of your SUV and headed for the front door. The heat of a hot August day still lingered on the humid air and the chorus of crickets all around you made you feel like you'd entered some enchanting storybook tale.
What a beautiful place. What would it be like to live here?
You had enough time to go home and change out of your scrubs. You went with a strappy summer dress and cute sandals, a soft, summer cardigan lending a demure look to the outfit. You'd ultimately decided to carry a small purse with your phone. If you needed to make notes, you were well prepared.
The soft notes of piano music reached your ears as climbed the stairs to reach the front door. For a moment, you just listened. It sounded like someone was actually playing a piano rather than a recording and you smiled when you recognized the song. "Dream a Little Dream of Me."
You hated to disrupt that but you didn't want to be late either. Your smart watch showed you it was eight-thirty-one.
Here goes.
Three sharp knocks on the door, announcing your presence. And just as you suspected, the music stopped. Footsteps grew louder as they neared the door. You smiled when the door swung open, anxious to greet your host and hopefully your new landlord.
But all you saw was his back as he walked swiftly away from you down a long shadowy hallway.
"Come in!" he called back over his shoulder in that strange voice.
You hadn't expected that, hoping you hadn't done something wrong already. With nothing else to do, you quickly closed the front door behind you and followed him down the hall. He'd turned to the right, light from the room casting a spotlight on the floor. Slowly, you went that same route, peering into the room before you walked into it.
You couldn't help but smile to see all the beautiful antique furniture, a gorgeous Tiffany lamp in delicate shades of pink and purple glass adorning a small table by the window. There were no photos on the walls, which you found strange, but there were gorgeous paintings of beautiful nature views. The floor was polished wood, gleaming under your sandals as you slowly walked further into the room. You also spotted the small piano, it's dark wood catching the soft light around it.
Finally, you spotted your host sitting in a shadowy corner of the room in a huge leather chair.  He sat there so still that it startled you a little at first. It took you only a second to understand why. Your host's face... It was horribly disfigured. Swollen and misshapen, covered with bulbous areas beneath his skin. His hands were normal, telling you he probably wasn't that old. He was dressed nicely in slacks and a black dress shirt, looking ready to curl in on himself under your scrutiny.
Only one eye was really open, the other buried in the odd landscape of his face, and it was blue. That one-eyed gaze was fixed on you and you instantly read the fear and anxiety there.
The poor man. Was it Proteus Syndrome? Or something else?
Instantly, you smiled. Years of seeing all sorts of animal injuries and conditions had you switching into the same objective mode you used at work and school. You noticed a chair sitting off to his left by a beautiful, large window. It was oddly placed several feet from him, but you understood why. You wanted him to feel comfortable with you.
"Thank you for agreeing to speak with me," you said in a tone you would have used with anyone else. Motioning toward the other chair, you asked, "May I?"
"Of course," he said, that fearful gaze on you as you took a seat. "I'm Edward. Thank you for coming out. I appreciate your... kindness."
With a nod, you told him your name, maintaining eye contact as you took a seat.
"So, your ad mentioned needing help with shopping and small errands," you said, realizing why now.  "What are you looking for there?"
"Not a lot," Edward replied. "As you can imagine, going out can be difficult for me at times. My condition is called neurofibromatosis. I've always had it so I'm used to people's reactions. It's just, the older I get, the more I just... You'd think I'd be used to it by now."
Your heart cracked a little in your chest. You couldn't begin to imagine what life had been like for the man before you. What did you say to that?
"And forgive me, but," Edward paused for a beat. "You're just so lovely."
Saying "thank you" didn't feel right. You certainly didn't see yourself that way so you waited for the uncomfortable silence to pass.
"I'd like a weekly grocery run," he explained. "During spring, I'd like someone who could run to the garden center for me to get supplies. That would be quite a few trips actually. I enjoy gardening. It's a place of peace for me."
That had you smiling. Everything around you, the home, the landscape outside, looked gorgeous. Maybe his condition had condemned him to a life in the shadows because of his appearance. But it sounded like he enjoyed making his environment beautiful and it really was. You found that inspiring.
"It's a little dark outside," you said. "But the flower beds around the porch are gorgeous. I bet they're even more beautiful by day."
Slowly, he nodded. "Thank you."
"That's mostly it," Edward finished. "I might ask for take out once in a while. Not often. I'll make sure you have plenty of money to get everything on my list and whatever you might want for yourself."
None of that sounded like a problem at all for you. It was incredibly generous.
"You'd mentioned you were taking a gap year from college," he said. "How old are you? If you don't mind my asking."
"I'm turning twenty-nine soon," you said.
Edward nodded, seeming to consider this. "How long do you plan to be here?"
"Oh, a while I'd think," you explained. "I'm about three months into my gap year right now. I'm going to the vet-med college. I still have two or three more years to get my DVM."
"The goal is to be a veterinarian?" he asked.
"It is," you told him. "I really love the hospital where I work now. I'm kind of hoping once I finish my degree that maybe I can stay and work there."
"So you're planning to live here," it wasn't a question, "instead of just passing through."
"I'm hoping to, yes," you said. "I work there full-time as a vet tech. I'm there by six in the morning and I get out around four. Most days. Some days we have last miute emergencies that keep us longer but it's not often. Maybe a couple of times a month. It shouldn't interefere with getting you what you need when you need it. If I get the accomodations that is."
Edward nodded, seemingly considering your words.
"Do you have any pets?" you asked him.
"Not at the moment, no."
That was a shame. The love of a pet could be good for someone like him.
"If you ever decide you'd like to adopt a dog or cat, let me know. We work closely with the county shelter and a few different rescue leagues. There are a lot of pets in need of good homes."
"I'll keep that in mind," Edward said.
You nodded, feeling a little awkward. You felt like he was smiling. There was no way to know for sure because his face...
"My offer is this," Edward said, pulling you out of your thoughts. "You live here. Like the ad said, you get a bedroom, living room, and full bath. They are very spacious rooms. The kitchen is here on the ground floor and it should be equipped with anything you need. The laundry is in the basement. Washer, dryer, ironing station."
An ironing station? That had you smiling.
Thinking about room in this house, you felt a small spark of excitement growing. Not yet. You didn't know how much he was going to ask for rent. You could just hope that if you were willing to run errands and shop for him, he'd take the price down a little. His house was incredible.
"You run errands for me, help me when I need you, and do the shopping," he went on. "We'll call it even."
What?
"Even?" you asked.
"I don't need your money," Edward said. "I have enough for a couple of lifetimes. My father left me quite an inheritance."
From the looks of everything around you, that appeared to be true. But you could stay for free?
You knew your confusion had to be showing on your face. Edward made a rough sound. Was it a chuckle?
"I have a couple more rules," he said after a moment.
"Of course," you said, still waiting for the punch line. This man didn't know anything about you and he was just going to let you live in his old-fashioned mansion for free? Just for running his errands and getting his groceries?
"I enjoy a peaceful life here," Edward said. "No loud television or music."
That wasn't an issue. You enjoyed peace yourself. You nodded.
"I don't mind if you have deliveries here," he went on. "But no visitors."
No one at all? That wasn't a huge problem. Still, there was your sister Monica, her husband and your nephew Lucas. They stayed so busy with work and Lucas's little league games that a visit wasn't something you had to worry about right away. But if they wanted to visit? Were you were supposed to just meet them in town?
"Does that pose a problem?" Edward asked, his gaze with that one blue eye intent on you. "Is there a boyfriend?"
"No," you said instantly. Dating was hard these days with an endless array of guys on dating apps looking for Miss Right Now and tasteful nudes. You weren't into one-night stands. You were hoping one day to find someone to be friends first because friendship was the foundation of every great relationship you'd ever witnessed. With the right person, intimacy and love came later, building a beautiful life on top of that all-important foundation. That was what you wanted. And you weren't in a big hurry. Not right now while you were still in school, building an occupation and a life for yourself.
Was that a hint of surprise in that single blue eye?
"No?"
"No," you repeated. You didn't elaborate. You didn't know Edward but for some reason, you sensed that your relationship - or lack thereof - was important to him.
Edward studied you for a long moment. "I'm surprised."
Okay, you were a little uncomfortable being put on the spot about your personal life. You were looking for a place to live for a while. That usually involved signing a lease and a credit check. But this?
"I've been busy between school and work for a while now," you explained awkwardly.
"You're beautiful," Edward was blunt. "That's why I was surprised."
Beautiful?
You blew out an exhale. See? He was just being kind.
"Do you accept the offer?" he asked.
Wouldn't you be stupid to refuse him? Free rent would help you put back money for school that much faster. If you wanted to see your sister, you could go visit her. If you did meet someone? Well, you could evaluate your situation then.
"Yes," you told him. "Thank you... Is there an agreement or lease or something you want me to sign?"
"There will be," he said. "I'll have my attorney put it together for us."
Just like that, huh? No one else was competing with you for this?
"When can I expect you to move in?" Edward asked.
"Well, I only have two weeks left," you explained. "I don't have a lot so I should be able to get everything packed up this week. I could maybe move in this weekend. If that's okay with you?"
"That sounds perfect," he said in his strangely distorted voice.
"Would you like for me to run errands or shop for you this week?" you asked, grateful for the offer he made you. He was lonely man and you understood that. Compassion for a beautiful place to stay sounded like a good deal to you.
"No." You sensed he was smiling again. "Make your preparations. You can move in this weekend and we'll sign the agreement then."
"Thank you," you told him. "I really appreciate this."
"I'm hoping this situation is one we will find mutually beneficial," Edward said softly.
You nodded, rising to leave. Smoothing the skirt of your dress as you stood, you felt his gaze on you. Again, that sense of foreboding hit you. But why? Edward didn't feel like a threat to you. He was a lonely man looking for companionship maybe, some help in getting the things he needed.
"I'll call Friday," you told him, "to arrange a time for this weekend."
Edward shook his head. "No need. Come anytime you want this weekend."
"Thank you," you said, ready to go. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
You turned to leave, the piano catching your eye as you approached it. That had you turning back.
"You were playing the piano earlier," you said.
Edward nodded.
"Your playing was beautiful," you admitted.
Some emotion flashed in his eye. It was a little frustrating because you really couldn't read his expressions. You only had intuition to go on. But you sensed that you pleased him.
"Thank you," he said, adding your name. "Be careful on your way back to your apartment."
Nodding, you turned back to make your exit. When you walked out the door of Edward's mansion, you felt the cool night air wash over you. It was darker now but the moon was bright overhead. It lit the way back to your SUV. The night was gentle, peaceful when you climbed back into the driver's seat and started the engine.
With one last look, your gaze roamed over what was going to be your new home. A beautiful old house and a gorgeous southern landscape. Free rent all for being quiet and getting whatever your new landlord needed.
It was more than you could have hoped for.
You didn't notice Edward standing in the window, watching you leave.
