Her Name
By ShadAmy Writer
“All this for what? Nothing!” Rouge shouted, as she approached her ebony teammate. “I might as well go look for that Master Emerald, since that irritating echidna is here.” She grumbled, as she began to turn and walk away.
A smirk appeared on Shadow’s face, as he crossed his arms. “Ha, something’s never change, do they?” He asked, before following behind his comrade. The events of his past were still unclear. There were large gaps in his memory, but he would get these gut feelings about those he was meeting that he could just tell were correct, whether it be for Rouge, or that blue hedgehog and his friends they had fought in the forest.
“What’re you saying?” Rouge looked over her shoulder, a grin on her face. “What else is a famous treasure hunter supposed to do?”
“I suppose you’re ri-” Their conversation was cut short by the sound of two pairs of footsteps rapidly clanging against the metal exterior of the ship. Before the two could even turn around, an azure blur ran past them, speaking to them in a familiar voice.
“Hey Shadow!” The blue hero shouted, as he sped to the opposite end of the ship.
Shadow gripped his fist tight. “That blue hedgehog.” He said to himself, as a smirk spread across his face. It’s a race he wants, huh? Shadow took a step forward, about to chase after his rival, but stopped as he felt Rouge tug on his arm. “Huh?”
“Shadow, look.” Rouge’s voice sounded uncharacteristically serious, only adding to the black hedgehog’s confusion. He soon realized that he was so excited by the possibility of a race that he didn’t think about the second set of footsteps. He turned his head, only to lock eyes with a pink hedgehog.
She stood there, almost frozen, mouth agape. As he turned towards her, she quickly moved her hand over her mouth. Her body quivered slightly, as she wrapped her free arm around her chest, seemingly attempting to stabilize herself. Shadow definitely recognized her, but like many others he was meeting for the first time again, he was having trouble placing a name. He felt something, but he couldn’t tell what that was either. All Shadow knew for certain was that it felt warm.
“S-Shadow?” The pink hedgehog finally spoke, her voice shaking terribly. Shadow’s eyes widened as she took a step towards them. The ebony hedgehog was no good at reading people’s emotions. The nuances of social interaction not only escaped him, but usually thoroughly disinterested him. For some reason though, his mind was racing trying to read her tone of voice. Was she scared? Sad? He couldn’t be sure. Had he hurt her in the past? If so, he wished he hadn’t. She spoke up once more, drawing his full attention. “You’re… alive?” That phrase was probably the last thing he had expected to hear. A confused look was plastered over Shadow’s face, as he turned his head to look at Rouge. The bat shrugged, letting her ears droop as an awkward smile appeared on her face. She hadn’t been exactly forthcoming with details regarding his past. She had promised that Eggman would provide him all the answers he needed, though the doctor appeared to be absent. Shadow turned his attention back to the pink hedgehog, who was still shaken.
“Of course I am.” Shadow finally said. He still had no clue exactly who she was or what she felt about him, so he opted to handle this the best way he knew. Through a cocky facade. “After all,” he spoke, running his hands over his quills. “I am the Ultimate Lifeform.” It was dead quiet for a moment. After what felt like an eternity of silence, Shadow heard the pink hedgehog begin to sniffle. The sniffles grew louder, until eventually the emerald-eyed hedgehog burst into tears. Shadow swallowed hard. Well, this could’ve been handled better, he thought to himself.
Much to his surprise however, the pink hedgehog burst into a run towards him. Shadow didn’t know what to do. Should he run away? That’s what the blue one did. Was that the correct move in this situation? Why was she running towards him if he made her cry? Shadow was so lost in his own thoughts, he didn’t realize she had already reached him. He inhaled sharply as he felt her arms wrap around him in a tight embrace. He heard his teammate let out a slight giggle. He found her laughing at him a little annoying, but at least it served as some type of indicator that what was happening was okay.
“I-I t-thought we’d never see you again!” The pink hedgehog stammered through her tears. Shadow slowly began to realize what these tears were. They were relief.
“Well, uh,” Shadow put his hands on her hips and moved her slightly away from him, so he could look her in her eyes. “I’m here now.” He said again, through a sly grin. He moved his hand to her face and wiped the tears from her eye. “So, no more tears, alright?”
The pink hedgehog sniffled once more, and nodded, releasing Shadow from her embrace. “So, how did you do it? How did you survive?”
“I-”
“We came here to ask Doctor Eggman the same thing.” Rouge said, cutting Shadow off.
“Doctor Eggman? What does he have to do with it?”
“I don’t know for sure.” Rouge shrugged. “All I know for sure is sleeping beauty here was in a pod in one of Eggman’s bases.”
“Hmph,” Shadow grunted loudly, displeased at the nickname. He went to cross his arms, but quickly found his hands being held by the pink hedgehog.
“Well, I’m glad you’re back.” She smiled sweetly at him. Shadow felt a warmth grow in his cheeks. After the long fight he and his team had gone through, attempting to make it through to the Egg Fleet, it felt nice to see someone who seemed happy to see him. “Does Sonic know you’re alive?”
“He-”
“Oh, of course he does!” She interrupted. “He just said ‘hi’. Oh, I’ve gotta introduce you to Big and Cream! They’ve heard tons about you!.”
“I-”
“I’ve got to take you around Station Square after all this is over. There’s so much for you to see! I can’t imagine missing fifty years of the world.” Shadow began to realize he wasn’t going to be able to get a word in. She could talk as fast as he could run. He felt a smirk spread across his face. He normally found this type of prattling an annoyance, but this was okay.
“Darling, I’m sure Shadow would love to join you on a trip around Station Square,” Rouge interjected, “but isn’t your hero getting away?” She gestured to the far end of the ship.
“Oh my gosh, I totally forgot!” She gave Shadow a quick hug before running off. “I’m sorry to leave like this, but I can’t let my Sonic get away! We’ll talk soon, okay?” She called over her shoulder as she raced out of sight.
Shadow lifted his arm and waved good-bye. Even after she was gone, he continued to stare in the direction she went. He eventually spoke. “Rouge…”
“Yes, hon?”
“What was her name?”
Rouge let out a slight chuckle. “That was Amy. Amy Rose.”
“Amy…” Shadow repeated under his breath. “I’ll remember that.”
