I really do not, and never did like the term 'special interest.' It sounds and feels patronizing, and just gives me the vibes of the type of person who sees an nd person and thinks "oh what are you super good at?" Like the expectation we've all gotta have some ~special ability/talent~ to make up for being nd.
Hyperfixation lacks all that bs to me, and nails how your brain just fucking latches on to it. Plus the feeling of acknowledgement that "this is something your brain just does," the formality and stuff in that vein. I remember hearing hyperfixation for the first time and it just clicking. It just feels better.
I know not every spec interest is a hyperfix, but god damn the first term is just icky to me. It's covered in goop
