i’ve been drawing sftr (short for stories from the rift) ranchers non stop so have one little comic of some kind

I read a smartpass where Eld and Petra sheltering from rain talking about the SOS. Apparently, SOS is formed right after Eren joined SQ with the reason to keep an eye on Eren, which contradicts with most of the fandom fancanon that the SOS has been there for a long time. In the same smartpass, Eld also mentions that Petra and Oruo used to being in the same squad with Levi. So, i want to know your headcanon or explanation on what's with the Levi squad before the SOS formed?

So, this took me for quite a wild ride BUT after an hour of double checking and re-reading I do have an answer for you. Buckle up.

I’m going to start by going through a timeline that is considered cannon in terms of the manga and animation. 

844: Erwin convinces Levi to join the Corps. (A Choice With No Regrets Ch. 1) 845: Fall of Wall Maria 848: 34th Expedition takes place, leading to Ilse Langnar making contact with an abnormal. 849: Ilse’s notebook is recovered during an expedition. 850: The Battle of Trost

Now, if we go by the OVA, Squad Levi seems to already be an established squad with its original members. Eld, Gun, Oruo, and Petra. They follow behind Hange at Levi’s orders and are there when the notebook is discovered. Also during this OVA, Petra and Oruo are seen with Levi during their downtime.

In the smartpass au, SFTR (shelter from the rain) vol. 7, Eld mentions that Petra is often placed in the same squad as Levi; while him, Oruo, and Gun have not teamed up with him in the past. Well, this is.... confusing... to say the least. Going by what’s being said here, it seems that Levi is not their squad leader and they all get placed into various squads at random. Petra is the only one who knows Levi at this point and has worked with him before (the fan girl in me is screaming) but that doesn’t fit in the timeline. So in terms of this conversation alluding to the fact that the Special Operations Squad was formed after Eren transformed doesn’t really fit in much of anything.

“...The Special Operation Squad’s true strength comes from their impeccable teamwork when they work together. Each member can work so well together, it seems like they are capable of communicating without using any words, signals, or gestures when in combat. Because of the Squad’s strength and past successes, they are often put in charge of tasks with higher stakes and priorities...” (AoT Wiki)

This suggests that the Squad was formed prior to Eren and was often given high profile cases due to their capabilities. I feel pretty confident saying that the squad was formed in 849. Before that, Petra worked frequently with Levi in various squads while Eld and the others were placed in different ones. They all knew of each other but only Petra had had any real contact with Levi.

I know this was a long ass answer but I hope maybe I kinda gave you what you were looking for ❤️️
