Ruger SFAR Ammo Selection…Hunting Season?
Over a year ago I picked up a new rifle from Brownells to gear up for hunting deer and possibly elk. The Ruger SFAR or “small framed autoloading rifle” is basically a .308 caliber rifle in a smaller size and weight that’s similar to the standard AR-15. When it comes to hunting, of course you want to shed weight wherever you can and your selected firearm is one of those possibilities. This particular rifle has been let’s say a challenge to prove to me it’s reliability and effectiveness in any situation much less a hunting scenario. But after multiple serv ice tickets opened with the folks over at Ruger, I think it’s finally worthy of a hunting season in my arsenal.
Once the functionality issues were ironed out I started to explore the accuracy issues with this rifle. I quickly found out that it suffered from some accuracy issues. This rifle was truly struggling to perform even remotely close to some of the worst rifles I had ever shot. Some people stated it could be related to the suppressor being used, but even without a can attaches, it struggled to get anything close to 2 MOA at 100 yards. I had tried all sorts of different ammo brands, bullet style and grain weight. It liked pretty much nothing. Now is 2 MOA acceptable enough to take large game? Let’s not kid ourselves, but yes it will do it. However, starting out with such poor accuracy doesn’t give much confidence in a hunting situation. Nothing worse than missing a shot and suspecting your chosen gear to be the biggest contributing factor. After many range sessions I decided to inspect the barrel and found some machining issues that I thought could be affecting the lack of accuracy that I was experiencing. Ruger ended up swapping the barrel for me with about a 2 week turn around.
Once I received the rifle back from Ruger I started to experience the accuracy I knew this rifle was capable of which is 1-1.5 MOA. Ruger did send a test target with sub 1 MOA 5 shot groups, but this was using match ammunition and my main focus was to be on hunting loads. I chose a variety of heavier loads dedicated for hunting and started additional testing. This rifle really seemed to prefer the 175 and 178 gr loads from Federal. To be specific their Ascent 175gr and 178gr ELD-X. With both of these ammo choices I’ve been able to get right around 1-1.5 MOA consistently. I recently grabbed some more of these 2 loads from Brownells to do just a small bit of dialing in using these loads. I believe that either of these loads will do the job on either whitetail deer or elk and out to distances past 200 yards without any drama. This entire ordeal has been quite an ordeal on both my patience as well as my wallet. Looking back at this rifle, it’s truly hard to recommend it except for the most patient of individuals. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a shot on big game this hunting season using this rifle and one of my 2 selected loads.

The Rabbi's cat is dead
“Le petit chat est mort.” (The little kitten has died), Agnés says in Molière’s “L’école des femmes”, (“The school for wives.”) Molière wrote this play in 1662. 361 years ago. Amongst many other things Molière wrote about the condition of women then. The condition of women is a fundamental part of Western civilisation. On this Friday, October 13, a man was killed in France. Stabbed. As a rule, I…

One of my most deeply-held beliefs on culture is that somewhere out there there is a 27yo with a crinkled non-binary flag in the corner of their room, more mugs and dirty plates in their sink than bricks in the tower of Babel, less than 70 of god's own dollars in their bank account to finish the month and five dying plants on the windowsill, crusty stuff in the corner of their eyes, who has crafted a world of aching beauty Tolkien and Homer could only ever dream of, a vision that honours all that is noble and raw in the heart of Man, a vindication of existence and a balm to suffering, all for the benefit of a half-dozen harem pants wearers on a server named "Bingus' Grotto"
#To be clear this a love letter to my DM the elusive and recluse ''N''#who from the remote Galapagos Islands has been for the past three years guiding us in an adventure that mixes#the paintings of david caspar friedrich; the writings of jacques abeille; the visions of darwin; the zany adventures of oda#the rhythm and language of Juan José Saer; characters worthy of Dumas and Sfar; dialogue like Chandler...#and a million other influences converging on what I must admit#is the purest form of love I have experienced from someone who is neither a lover nor family#love you ''N''

Ruger SFAR…Ultra Lightweight AR10 Perfection?
I love the idea of a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge in an AR platform. These are nothing new, not at all. Probably 2017/2018 I decided to build one in 6.5 Creedmoor using an Aero Precision builder kit and it’s one of my favorite rifles to shoot. The unfortunate thing about it however is that it’s heavy and I mean tank sized heavy weighing in at around 15lbs with a suppressor attached. Because of the chunkiness of this build, it can’t join me on hunting expeditions. I always told myself if a viable lightweight AR-10 platform would emerge, then I would pick one up. Enter the Ruger SFAR .308 rifle. This rifle came out about a year or so ago. It’s available only in .308 and in a 16” or 20” barrel. And get this, it weighs in at just 6.8 Lbs! This is on par with the weight of a standard 5.56 AR-15 rifle. So when I had the funds and Brownells had one in stock, I thought I’d pick one up to see if it could scratch that itch I had for many years.
First impressions right out of the box, it’s light! No way can this fire a .308 cartridge. The way Ruger accomplished such a feat is they basically stretched the receiver to accommodate the longer cartridge. To the rear of the magwell, most everything is regular old AR-15 right down to the receiver extension and buffer. The bolt carrier group is truly something special. Ruger is using some sort of special alloy on the bolt that’s supposedly much stronger than a C158 bolt. The bolt itself has 2 ejectors and machined very nicely. The firing pin is made out of titanium. Ruger went out of their way to save weight in a lot of places, including the hand guard which has many lightening cuts and is void of a top rail across it on the 16” version. You’ll also notice extra gas ports close to the barrel extension and on the bolt carrier. The gas key only has a single screw instead of 2 like AR-15 bolt carrier. The rifle is a gas impingement type with a 4 position gas regulator to adjust for different ammo types and for suppressor use. Ruger does recommend a 100-200 round break in on setting 3.
I’ve had this rifle in hand for just over a week. Broke it down to check everything out and Ruger has indeed done a fantastic job with assembling this rifle. Only one range session so far, but using 150gr .308 ball ammo it was mostly a successful trip. As the manual says, using the higher gas setting during break in is necessary. I found myself having to use setting 3 when shooting unsuppressed and setting 2 when shooting suppressed. These are 1 setting higher than normal use. Accuracy was very acceptable even though I not shoot for groups as I was mostly function testing. Recoil is more than an AR-15, but very reasonable. Only time will tell, but I think Ruger has a game changer on their hands and at a stellar price! At Brownells these rifles were priced right around $1K.
