OC-TOBER day 3: old oc
This is from my high school days, Seye, a character from a book I didn't actually end up writing. It was a medieval setting with fantasy elements, and I spent so much time researching historical costume at the time that I developed an obsession for it.
She still lives in my head and is still very dear to me, even after all these years.

lets go. harpy oc.
Seye, warrior of the Stonewatch flock. He is trans and as such has received education in both fighting and history, and while he loves both he’s much fonder of battle... of flying, defending his flock’s territory from the Shade, and bringing back stories for fledgelings.
His fortunes change when one day he is struck out of the sky by a Shadebeast and plunges into the ocean. His mask shatters in two and drifts away; so does he, drifting half-conscious and half-dead on the tide, until a Southern Maren sees him clinging to a piece of driftwood and ferries him to the snowy shores of the Southern Icefields. He wakes up alone, freezing and badly injured, and the only thing he can do it struggle inland.
He falls through a thin pane of ice, slides downwards on a sloped cliff of ice, and passes out in a snowdrift. Unbeknownst to him, this dark and frigid place is a Gaoler prison. The Warden, an Overseer named Kuak, finds the unconscious harpy and brings him to his den to recuperate. Seye is injured, exhausted, and can’t fly, but when he wakes up in the presence of a thirteen-meter, ten-thousand pound ancient monster, he flees into the twisting caverns and succeeds only in exhausting himself.
They have time to introduce themselves later. For now Seye is resigned to recovering in the mostly-safe Gaoler’s den. Kuak... is glad to have company.
#seye (oc)#kuak (oc)#there is fic. I will post it. I don't know if I want to put it on the forums or just ao3 lol#flight rising#harpy#gaoler

Hi! I'm very new to the overwatch Fandom and am currently obsessing over your fan kids (specifically Seye bc I don't see a lot of doom content and I love him) ANYWAY, doomfist does die, right? If so, who is it that kills him, and how do Seye and his mother react? I did read the post about Seye eventually destroying the doomfist with some help, but am super curious about some of what happens in between and after :>
Wow! Asks that make me dig through my ancient 'Marsey' tag.
To be honest, I used to be SUPER protective and vague when it came to stuff at this stage of the story I wanted to tell with my fankids, and was also being sadly dangled along by Blizzard's breadcrumbs of lore---I was in a dance with Blizzard where, I did have a very strong idea of how I wanted the story to end, but I was also dependent on Blizzard for canon lore so that I could make my ending the most accurate, the most satisfying. But seeing as there's basically only lore drops now because Blizzard no longer gives a shit about continuity or quality, and basically the cast has expanded so much since I initially plotted it out that I'll probably have to reconfigure this ending in some capacity anyway, I can talk about it now.
Basically there were two avenues I could have taken with Doomfist, the first one, that actually had those Marsey fics, where it was basically a 'continuation' of the Doomfist cycle, that is, some guy challenges Doomfist for the gauntlet and is able to kill him and take the gauntlet, which obviously puts Seye into a lurch as Doomfist's son and the previously assumed successor. I literally didn't have a name for this would-be killer, and in a way, it didn't really matter because you as the reader weren't supposed to see Doomfist's killer as the rightful bearer of the mantle and Seye's whole arc would be defeating this guy (with Marti's help) and then basically shutting down the weird Metal Gear-esque war cult that's risen around the Doomfist gauntlet as a symbol.
The other option was that Doomfist would be killed in the Final Battle™ at Nepal by... drumroll... Junkrat and Roadhog. NOW BEFORE YOU YELL AT ME, Junkrat and Roadhog would also die in this fight. Roadhog would die before Junkrat, but Junkrat would basically be talking to a very clearly bled-out-past-the-point-of-no-return-and-unconscious Roadie like, "It's okay, Roadie, you can take a nap. I can wrap this up," Before pulling all of the pins on all the grenades on his little chest harness while clinging onto Doomfist. Okay you can yell at me more now. But mostly I loved the combination of dramatic irony of Doomfist being consumed in these fires of chaos, and of the ~Junkers~ of all people going out in a blaze of glory against one of Overwatch's Final Bosses. I had this in my brain for years before Junkrat even got his "I killed the Doomfist!!" elimination line, btw. Doomfist views conflict as its own sort of order, but ends up getting killed by the wacky Mad Max randos who have kind of been the comic relief this whole time. Basically the fact that the Doomfist gauntlet itself would also be destroyed in this kind of fight would aslo be the thing that ends the cycle. That was also the battle that was vaguely referenced in this fic.
In both potential deaths for Doomfist, Seye becomes disillusioned enough with Talon as an organization to basically split off and form his own splinter mercenary organization (I was going to use my Talon Goon OC's as his starting lineup, haha), and he also attempts to create his own mantle as "Earthshaker" but he's still deeply affected by Doomfist's death because that's so much of his identity and he's had this enormous fear of irrelevance all of his life. Like this isn't just the grief of losing a father, this is the threat of oblivion that he's dreaded his entire life. As for Seye's mother, Tejuka, it's less of a blow to her--she more or less came to terms with the fact that Doomfist really doesn't have the philosophy or lifestyle to "go peacefully in his sleep," and that's one of the reasons why they divorced and she put so much effort into grooming Seye to actually be the successor of Ogundimu Prosthetics. Dying is easy, living's harder, etc, etc.
#overwatch#doomfist#son of doomfist#A SEYE FAN OH MY GOD YAAAAAY#Me: I love stories of healing and redemption!!#also me: I have to kill off the Junkers because they're Rosencrantz and Guildenstern

this is my tmbg oc: seye carpenter. he plays tambourine, his favorite crayon colors are fuzzy wuzzy and eggplant, and he loves mimosas.
he left the group circa 1996 to become an audio engineer
every time someone mentions their "tmbg ocs" without fail i think "oh its like a made up band member" and like OBVIOUSLY no theyre ocs based on songs or sometimes like custom johnsonas. and that makes sense. obviously thats what theyd mean. but i can never help picturing some average looking old guy named like Tim Mergson and he plays the wooden xylophone on tour

YES YES YES YES YE SYE SYEYE SEYE SYYE YESYXY
I've been thinking of making twst wonderland oc’s based on who framed roger rabbit characters!!!!
Yuu but they have the physics of an old cartoon character.
Like just imagine the fights against overblots with normal Yuu versus cartoon yuu.
normal yuu: Trying to stay alive while commanding the team.
cartoon yuu: get’s smashed flat and proceeds to blow into their thumb to balloon up before going back to normal. “That all you got?”
cartoon yuu just doing the most mind boggling shit in front of everyone. Legit just Grim proceeds to watch them walk off the Ramshackle Roof and stand on air while pacing back and forth talking about building plans. Or Ace just watching them cross dress and fooling a bunch of the students (sometimes Crowley). Or the day they stretched their arm all the way a crossed the room to grab a ingredient for potions class.

I haven’t posted about my OC’s in a while. I should do that. Fire some shots into the air to keep the rent down. Uhhhh…
Faustine would have a Bellhop skin, Jaime would have an “Artful Dodger” skin, and Seye’s questwatch skin would be “Monk.” Although Faustine’s Bellhop skin could probably just be a red recolor of her Chauffeur skin with the hat swapped out for a classic dinky bellhop hat.

For the OC headcanon:
Marti and Doomfist
>Before they meet, Marti obviously dislikes Doomfist for a whole host of "you're a supervillain and therefore one of the reasons my birth mom died" reasons, but the more Marti interacts with Seye, the more intense her hatred of Doomfist becomes. Like, "You fucked up a perfectly good boy is what you did. Look at him, he has anxiety stemming from a deep-seated belief that he has to be goddamn Alexander the Great or face total oblivion.'
>But when they do meet, Marti is even further infuriated because... Doomfist is wonderfully polite, pleasant, and warm, and he keeps talking about how impressed he is with her leadership, her adaptability, and her inventiveness, and he can see why Seye is so... preoccupied with her. She's like "Fuck off! I know you're just trying to recruit me!" and Doomfist is just all like, "Oh no, I'm well aware of your motivations regarding Talon and I respect you far too much to even attempt to broach that subject." And that pisses her off more because goddammit this shit is easier when you've built someone up to be a monster in your head but... nope, Doomfist literally just... truly believes in his weird combat-based social Darwinism dogma. And because that belief is so pure he's dazzlingly charismatic. So Marti walks away from that encounter like... pissed off and bewildered because oh shit, that's where Seye gets it, but also oh shit that's where Seye gets it.
>One of Marti's tinkering hobbies is actually constantly trying to understand/theoretically reverse-engineer the Doomfist gauntlet to try and figure out Doomfist's weaknesses. She hasn't really nailed it down yet, but she's actually come up with a number of counters for Seye's gauntlets.

How did Seye convince your red-toned Talon OCs to come with him? from what I remember Baines seems to want to legitimately move upward in Talon's ranks. Actually, how did Seye even get to know them?
Well as I've mentioned in his bio, Doomfist made Seye climb up from the bottom ranks, which allowed him to build rapports with various Talon members at different ranks as he worked his way up, including my beloved goons! He actually tried to keep the "Son of Doomfist" thing under his cap as long as possible ("Hi, I'm Seye... the engineer") because after his father sent him away from Talon's high table he wasn't in a hurry to draw a huge amount of attention to himself. So like, he did gradually gain the trust and approval of Red, Scarlet, Carmine, and Baines over the course of his career. Red was the first one who really got a liking for him( “He’s funny. Nice smile.”), and Scarlet followed after (”He saves me carrot cake from the dining hall...”), then eventually Carmine (”Kid has his shit together. Tries a little too hard. I like him.”), then Baines (”He’s okay I guess.”).
Eventually, once he got higher in the ranks, the fact that Seye was Doomfist's son came to light and Baines was like "Oh I knew something was off about you!" and Carmine was like "No you fucking didn't." But by then Seye was being sent on more 'specialized' missions that didn't require as heavy a trooper presence. Still, once he was picking out his own strike teams, he ended up favoring Red, Scarlet, Carmine, and Baines (and Baines was kind of a sullen asshole about it but also didn't say no to a chance to prove himself). Eventually it got to the point where Seye would just say, "Baines' crew" and everyone would know exactly which four he was talking about (and Baines did like it being referred to as 'Baines' crew'). Red and Scarlet were the first two who were willing to leave with Seye, partially because they knew him the longest, and partially because Talon kind of fucked up both their physiology and after Widowmaker's defection they were sort of worried if Talon's 'enhancements' also jammed expiration dates on them. That, and Talon leadership was getting kind of fractured with tensions rising between Doomfist and Reaper. Carmine was never really devoted to Talon's ideology, and Seye seemed like as good an opportunity as any to cut and run. Baines, as you've guessed, was the hardest nut to crack, but once the rest of the crew was lined up with Seye he was like, 'RRRGH. FINE.' Because how can you have 'Baines' Crew' without Baines? Carmine sweetened the deal by telling Baines he was basically getting in at the top level with Seye's mercenary organization, Earthshaker.

Hey there, I have a writing question. How do you go about finding or picking names for your characters? Especially sci-fi/fantasy characters like your ocs? Is there a trick to it? Also, if you have any resources for this and tag them, I'd love to take a look at them if that's OK with you.
Well the process varies from character to character. When it comes to naming my own characters, I am a big fan of like... Dickensian naming conventions where the name audibly fits for the character, but also thematically fits for the character. I also like names that can kind of play off of each other. My naming process is a a combination of browsing baby name websites and... also my own intuition.
When it came to my Overwatch fankids, a lot of the names kind of cropped up organically--like in Marti's case, I wanted a name that sounded both French and Spanish, so that obviously meant a romance-language name. You have like, a longer, more feminine full name with 'Martina' but then you shorten it to a cute, practical 'Marti.' So like, she's pretty, she's feminine but also the name Martina means 'Servant of Mars' which is kind of a reference to her having a bumpier origin story than the other fankids. Marti, in my head sounded like a nickname you could easily hear in a French or Spanish language film--a little androgynous, a little streetwise, but there's also Marty McFly in the Back to the Future series, so you sort of have that "relatable everyman" element to it--someone with a good heart who is very adaptive.
For Jaime it was largely me going with "I want a name that is clearly Spanish, but also plays off of McCree's name, Jesse." So you have a little bit of that visual association with "Jesse James" but it's Spanish so y'know it's pronounced "High-may."
Rei, as I've said before, is a name that's both Hebrew and Japanese, so it fit for my "Mercy is Jewish" headcanon and also I like Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Akasha's name is a reference to the Hindu concept of "Akasha" which means "Space" or "Aether" so that's kind of foreshadowing to her being stuck in the void... Also the fact that she carries a sword and the fic title "Sword of Akasha" is literally just me making a Code Geass reference for funsies.
Seye I got from browsing a couple of Yoruba baby name websites and comparing the different interpretations of the names the sounded most pleasing to me. I remember I was looking for names which meant "Heir" or "Prince" or "Chosen One" but Seye, which means "Honor" had the winning combination of sounding the most pleasing in my head and also being memorable and easy to spell while still being distinctly Yoruba. Also it had the bonus of the little "ey" sound at the end so it kind of seemed diminutive in comparison to "Akande."
Rajeev and Samir got their names from baby name websites--and it was important to me that you had a little assonance in their names. I wanted a bit of a reversal since their moms are Egyptian and Indian--so Rajeev, who takes more after Pharah, got the Indian name, and Samir, who takes more after Symmetra, got the Arabic name... so you have a bit of a switcharoo there but there's also kind of an audio association with their respective moms' names--the "rah" sounds with Rajeev and Pharah and the "Sm" sounds with Samir and Symmetra.
With Andrea, it was pretty funny because I had all these people pouring into my inbox with name suggestions, but I wanted a name that would sound natural in Spanish, but was also common enough to be American. And Andrea means "Of Man" which y'know... she has two daddies.
"Aidan" or "Aiden" is the more common spelling of Aedan's name, but I went with "Aedan" because Aed is the Irish god of the Underworld and Moira's Goth AF.
Faustine is Faustine because Obvious Reference to Goethe's Faust is Obvious... but also it's a name that means "lucky" and she's associated with Monaco and Casinos and money.
I think like... the auditory element of my naming process is kind of hard to describe and boils down to 'vibes' a lot. Like I already tend to "hear" my writing as I'm writing it, so a lot of it is determined by "yeah this sounds right."
When it comes to my OG OC's, Val and Aria, I was 17 and very adamant that Aria was Welsh, because if she was Irish, that would make her a self-insert--so I went with "Arianwen" which means "Silver Fair" and Aria for short and this was years before I was remotely aware of Arya Stark. I know it's a common name but honestly it suits her. It feels like her, and that's what's most important.
As for Val, his full name is "Valendin Dard Felov"--which I think I grabbed from some websites on Chechen names that I've long since forgotten--but his middle name "Dard" I stole from my Indian music professor in college, Dard Neuman. Dard is a Greek name that means "Son of Zeus" but in Hindu it means "Pain of Separation." Also the last name "Felov" was a bit of a pun because my boy Val GOES THROUGH IT and I was like "heheheh he 'Fell Off.'" I was developing Val along with a lot of my worldbuilding--I was really obsessed with him being from a mountain based culture so I was taking elements from Andean and Himalayan cultures, and I gave him a Chechen name because... Caucasus. So really it's a combination of like, the kind of everyman, melodious name of Val, and a longer name that kind of ties into the worldbuilding and his own story.
When it comes to making up names, my advice is to run your made up names through google or google translate.
So in summary, the NiteWrighter Patented Method For Naming Your Characters:
1. Who do you have already named and how will that name fit in among those names?
2. What is their backstory and what conditions might influence their naming?
3. How will the name fit in among the fictional world you're working with?
4. Does it sound right--is it memorable? Can it have variations in address and still be recognizable? Do you look at the character and go, "yeah that's _______"
5. Do you just think it's neat?
6. Pace around your house. Consult the wind. Feeeeel the vibes. But also don't overthink it. But also do. This is very important.
7. Do you know someone with a cool name whose name you can just fucking steal? Like the Fae?
8. Baby name websites, I guess.
