18 months living in South India: hanging around the world from Korea to Seychelles
I'm about to depart India for my final trip to Maldives, subsequently going somewhere else. Taking a look back at 18 months I spent here, I got a lot of things to talk about job, and it's been a pleasure to immerse myself into the business of my company, as well as life here in South India, its culture. historty and ethics. Even though I was always saying I came to India for the sake of getting work experience and expanding myself more into HR practices, from time to time I indulged myself in the trips! Leaving the country, I'm ending up having around 10 Indian states and 10 different countries visited. And here is a short glimpse into my traveling experience I'd like to convey.
Tamil Nadu
I've seen a lot of places in Tamil Nadu but I would probably mention Kanyakumari as the most interesting point. It's a place where you meet the tourists from all the parts of India, as well as pilgrims who consider this place to be a heritage which has a deep spiritual significance. I must admit, the sunset on the Ocean coast was really marvelous to observe!
Bangalore, Karnataka
I don't like Bangalore, to be frank. The things I would remember is that life is costly, and it always takes ages to get from one place to another with a cab. It's a megalopolis, and I didn't feel so good being there. From my point of view, Bangalore is mostly about the shopping malls, some whacky bars, traffic jams. And this is not something I might be looking for while being in India.
Delhi I grew up in a big city, so I'm used to it. I like... busy. But not in the way the huge cities like Delhi are arranged. So every time I'm in Delhi I feel a little sick of being there. The most impressive thing about Delhi I remember is a sign at the New Delhi Railway station saying "Don't talk to the strangers, don't follow their recommendations!" That's a lil jumpy, but I understand very well why these words were depicted over there. One has to stay away from possible rip-off and scum; this city teaches to be always cautious and concentrated. As for the sightseeing, I would definitely highlight the Lotus Temple. It's just absolutely brilliant and magnificent!
Punjab
Once I went to Muktsar instead of Amritsar due to some confusion, and it ended up really funny. It's a small town on the boarder with Pakistan, where the people haven't seen the foreigners. Once I stepped my foot on Moktsar land I got surrounded by hundreds of people peering out at me. Later I stayed in the hotel, and while looking in the roster of foreigners registered themselves in this place, I realized I was the only non-Pakistani foreigner staying there within the months or maybe more!
Mumbai
Mumbai is not really my cup of tea, it's too messy. The most amusing thing I recall is traveling with a local train where every carriage is packed with thousands of guys. You can't even sneak out on your station if the crowd is not leaving as well. This is really ridiculous to travel in this train, though once in a lifetime it's kinda interesting as well.
Himachal Pradesh
I can't describe my experience with Himachal Pradesh in a nutshell, though I have only been there several times. It will take ages if I start since it's my absolutely favourite state in India. If memory serves well picking the pivotal impression out of dozens, the most sublime moment to treasure there was an early breakfast in Dharamsala I had, the place where the Tibetan government in exile resides. They command the separated territory with their own temples, libraries, colleges, etc., and there is just one restaurant where the monks serve the food from like 3:30 am till 6 am, then they close it till the mid day opening it subsequently for a few hours. That's a bizarre schedule indeed, and that was really curious to sit in this restaurant at 5 am looking at the monks' early strolls and shivering in the damned cold! All-in-all, I'm a passionate admirer of the whole Himachal Pradesh!
Andaman and Nicobar islands
What a rip-off that famous story about elephants who bathe and swim in the Andaman Sea! They ain't got not elephants anymore. Though, the beach of Havelock island is one of the most spectacular places I have ever seen. It's a solitaire place with the landscapes which pretty much remind of Thailand, but happen to be the territory of India. Splendid! I wish I'll come back to Havelock.
Kerala
Even though Varkala is simply a shelter for the foreigners living in Kerala where you can spend the quality time guzzling boozes in the restaurants which don't close at 9-10 PM, I would mark Guruvayoor as my favourite place in Kerala. It's a sanctuary of peace, and I love North Kerala better than the Southern part of it. You may see the elephants hanging around the streets not letting rickshaws to overtake them. And it's a routine, like it is supposed to be this way!
UAE
The time I spend in Dubai was just a stroll during a layover, so I didn't get a good picture of life there. Considering my quite an ample traveling experience and a large amount of airports I visited in my life, I must say that the airport in Dubai happens to be the largest and the most stunning complex related to aviation! It's like the entire enclave you get into!
Sri Lanka
The ocean coast of Sri Lanka is really beautiful. I had the greatest time in the rural are which is around 70 kms away from Colombo, heading to the south. It's a perfect place to spend the vacation. But I must admit the nature of Sri Lanka is very similar with something you try out in Kerala!
Nepal
It's surely a great place due to hills which span across the majority of the country's territory. Renting a room somewhere in the hills is a great and thought-provoking experience. You do nothing, but observe the highest mountains in the world, read or write something. A perfect place indeed for reconsidering the life values or loosing the train of thought drifting away to the distant summits.
Thailand
Bangkok is nothing but a Paris of the Orient o' mine. I feel home in Bangkok which is one the most free city in the world, from my point view. It judges nobody welcoming you, whoever you are and letting you to do whatever you feel like to. Approaching the random people and chiming in is just fine – it always ends up with catching up some travelers who got quite a story to tell. Bangkok never sleeps, and it's a personification of vivid and energetic life.
Malaysia
I went to Malaysia like 4 times, but I haven't seen much of its life. The interesting part about Kuala Lumpur is that it's the most diverse city in terms of people living there. You find the neighborhoods of every nation – whether you want to meet some Syrians, Ethiopians, Bangladeshi, Chinese people you'll all of them in different districts sticking together. Everybody is immigrant in Kuala Lumpur! It's certainly a coin which has two different sides. But it's simply fascinating, though.
Vietnam
The tropical rainfalls are extremely massive in Vietnam. I have never seen such a heavy rain splurging non-stop for ages! The way you spend the hours at this moment is all about rushing from one restaurant to another one which is nearby. However, this country always amazed me due to its culture and history, and I'll return there within a year or two to get a better glimpse into the life in Vietnam: next time not during the rainy season!
South Korea
South Korea became my favourite country in the world after the short trip I had in October, and I'm gonna get back there for a few years once the political situation calms down. Seoul strikes with the best parties and clubs in the world which are not worse than top-notch entertaiment places in Paris, Amsterdam or Berlin. Also, Korean food is just the best in the whole world, from my point of view! But my favourite part was conversing with SKY university students who happen to be truly educated and sophisticated. I pretty much appreciate these distinguished young people I met.
Ethiopia
I spent less time there to judge the country, but Addis Ababa seems to be quite an interesting place for expats to live in. The best part is that it's really cheap, and I couldn't find out how to waste 30$. I suppose, you can have a really good time spending a few days in the expat area where you can indulge yourself into pretty much anything you wish.
Seychelles
La Digue island is a paradise on this planet. This is surely the most remarkable experience of my trips. From the main national park, you can reach the coast to observe the absolutely marvelous lagoons and reefs which make you feel you are on the other planet. The compositions of giant rocks, white sand and palm trees leave you speechless. The water is absolutely crystal-clear, and you will see a lot of colourful fishes being really curious about those who approach the water.
Myanmar
Myanmar is the only one Southeast Asian country with no hordes of tourists, and the people here don't have a mindset of providing some services or getting advantages from the foreigners. They look at you with the curiosity! I went there for the New Year which they celebrate with the water festival splashing the water over everybody on the streets for 4 days consecutively. They splash it with the buckets, bottles, hoses, water pistols, and there is just no way no to protect yourself from getting completely drenched. During the festival people don't carry any gadgets along with them, don't stare at the monitors of their phones, but just play the water games. That's pretty much fun!
