We’re packing up supplies for a workshop at Indiana University in Bloomington this week. We’ll be sewing up text blocks, trying a variety of sewing methods. I’m looking forward to being a Hoosier for the week. #bookbinding #bookarts #bookconservation #sewingsampler #historicbooks #indianauniversity (at Big River Bindery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Mmy5mFyLO/?igshid=5hxilnoh53nu

Sewing Samples
I had so much fun creating these samples! Above are stitched samples from a sewing machine, stuffed forms, and appliqué. I also had another sewing machine exploration in this post many moons ago. I added more stitches on the yellow sample, exploring the other stitches the machine could do. I really like that thick stroked one.

Inner Eyeball/Samples

So for the eyeball that I put on the class quilt I made an inner stuffed form. The first image is of some fabric that I took from one of my cotton T-shirts and used a sewing machine to get a curved form. The next image is after I stuffed it with polyester filling and hand sewed it together. Then I crocheted brass wire into the round, hammered it flat, and stitched it to the back of the eyeball. The wire form also acts as a structure to push the form forward into the eyeball.

Sewing Samples Pt. 2

3D Stuffed Object
I used a zig zag stitch with a wide stitch, that’s why the zigzags don’t look like pointy mountains but more like low valleys.

I usually use this kind of seam because it makes the edges of the garment sturdy and finished.
My sewing machine is not the greatest and causes lapses in the stitch. Maybe it’s because I went too quickly on on the machine.

Sewing and Soft Sculpture Samples
Be sure to post images of your best exploration of soft sculpture sewing techniques introduced by Megan last week onto your blogs. These sewing samples will be graded as part of blog check #2 due November 15th.
Sewing samples should demonstrate your experience with sewing using a sewing machine. The need to include an exploration of creating soft form using some kind of stuffing. They should also include some sort of applique. (If you need additional fiber fill stuffing material to explore these techniques further, please see me.) Your sewing samples can also include hand stitching, but this is not required.
These samples could be as simple or as elaborate as your practice dictates. Not every sample needs to be art, but some can be. Not every sample is directly relevant to your practice, so in those cases, just use your sample as a demonstration of your current skill level in these techniques. The particular number and depth of your samples will differ from artist to artist. Just show me what you know, and where your own research into these techniques has lead you.
Use the hashtag #sewingsamples to make your post easy to identify.

This image shows some pleating samples done on a sewing machine for commercial use. Each of these samples began as a piece of 9″ x 30″ muslin.

Sewing. This day was dedicated to learning how to use the sewing machines. We used small sheets of fabric and practiced just feeling out the machine. I first went over it by creating a straight line, just to be able to get a little comfortable. As soon as I felt how the machine worked I tried to create a pattern and sewing that together to keep it in place. It was fun having to feel out the machine but it’s not something I see myself using anytime soon. Maybe until I find out how else I can use it. #sewingsamples

This is my inspiration for my sample project and I am planning to incorporate cultural aspects of my heritage. (Please excuse my messy clothes rack; this room is my studio)
I tried to use this dress as a reference for a pattern but I realized it is way too small so I decided to make my own pattern based upon my own measurements.

This piece I constructed from an apron I used while serving and an old scrap t-shirt fabric I’ve held on to for the hopefulness that I would get to upcycle this material. I cut up an old stocking for the top portion of the bandeau so it would not appear jagged and junky looking.

This is the beginning process of my project. I am starting with a top bandeau piece to connect to the dress portion.

Sewer’s Tip: The scissors on the right are fabric shears and they can only be used to cut fabric only, if they are used to cut even paper it will ruin the blade.
This is my sewing machine I think it has been with me for the past 6 years.
Random Fact: I begged my sister to buy this for me from Joanns and offered to walk her dog but never did. My sister spoils me but at least it has gone to good use.
