Mission 14 Charity, Started by Locals, Helps End Cycle of Poverty in Nicaragua

When Nick and Sandi Cienski (friend and artist represented by Oriet’s Fine Art) visited Nicaragua in 2010, they had no idea they were about to begin a charitable journey that would change the lives of dozens of families forever.

We recently attended a special night at the Under Armour Lighthouse, where Nick serves as creative director, to learn more about MISSION 14 and its efforts to break the cycle of poverty.

We learned that during that 2010 trip, the Cienskis took an unexpected visit to a garbage dump and saw that hundreds of people were living and dying amongst the steaming piles of burning trash. These people had no future, no marketable skills, and were making between $1-$3 a day picking trash. Hopeless parents were surrendering their children to sex traffickers just to be able to survive.

Unable to shake the images of the horror they saw, Nick and Sandi vowed to do something. Together, this husband and wife duo created Mission 14, a non-profit that provides 5-week  training courses to any man or woman interested in learning how to sew. After completing the five week course, students must pass a sewing test and are then given a government authorized certification that enables them to get a job within one of the country’s bustling garment manufacturers.

Graduates of the Mission 14 sewing program are placed in jobs almost immediately and increase their daily wage to $8 - the equivalent of a professional nurse. An on-site social worker provides basic life skills courses that teach them how to manage their money, how to open a bank account, how to work on a team and what it means to be a responsible employee. Suddenly, their future looks brighter, and they are able to support their entire families.

Last year, Mission 14 trained 140 students and placed them in jobs. This year, they hope to train 200. Changing the lives of a single Nicaraguan are important, but breaking the cycle of poverty and redirecting the futures of full families is even better.

Mission 14 also serves as the lone sponsor for the Maryland Human Trafficking Investigators Seminar in Ocean City to help educate local law enforcement on human trafficking within our state. They work closely with the State’s Attorney’s Office, The Governor’s Office of Crime and Prevention, and the City of Baltimore Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice Human Trafficking
