Another thing that had been on The Pile for some time was this velvet mite brooch, which I got out and finished today! I'm not entirely happy with it - the body is much too flat and the overall size is a bit bigger than I'd intended. But maybe someday I'll make another one that's smaller, with way more batting.
This red poly velvet had been in my stash for as long as I can remember and I don't know where it came from, but I'm glad I kept it even though I knew I wasn't likely to use it on actual clothing items. The legs are made from wire covered with little fabric tubes, and the body is 2 layers of buckram with some cotton batting, then another bit of covered buckram for the belly. I tried machine sewing the leg tubes at first, but it was a huge wonky mess, so they're all hand sewn.
I think it's much too big for a waistcoat, but could perhaps do on a jacket.
(For anyone who hasn't seen velvet mites, they're just as fuzzy and bright red as this, but plumper and more strawberry shaped. They're very very tiny and harmless. The ones I've seen in parks and on riverbanks are usually about 2mm long.)

Ok, soooooooo I'm almost afraid to post this, but I'm trying something I've never done before. I'm basically attempting at making my own Dasymutilla flammifera plushie. So far, I've made the head + mandibles, minus the antennae. Gonna work on those next. Glued the eyes on. The red eyelash fabric had to be sewn on by hand. It's a long process, but I'm really intrigued and kind of scared to find out how it will look when it's finished! (The mandibles are open so that it looks more badass!) I learned how to use a sewing machine for the first time. This is a journey. If it turns out alright when finished, I'll post it. It's going to be a big plush, lmao. I might even add a squeaker in the abdomen since Mutillids stridulate when threatened. I'm still on the fence about that one, though. Just imagine the antennae are there. 😆 I'll update this post with a pic including the antennae once I've finished them. The red hairs are a bit messy but I'm gonna fix them later.

“I’m wearing a cloak that I designed and made myself, the shoes are from Shoreditch in London, pants and shirt are from David Owens VVintage in the Lower East Side. I’m inspired mostly by medieval fashion and art nouveau because it’s so connected to nature. I love when things are handmade with natural materials.”

So I’m making myself a Wolfkiller coat/cloak right now and I swear I was only pushing the wolf button through to double-check it fit easily through the bound buttonhole I just made
Tumblr media
But then his little fangs went over the edge and I had a little giggle! Like, yup, this is a Lestat coat already. 😂

I finally made a bit of progress on the couch today! The back is now tufted, but has yet to be stapled down. One thing I learned is that apparently, the pleats are always meant to face down so that dust doesn't get trapped in the creases. Clever!
The back: I used the foam that was cored out of the button-holes and bobbypins to tie down the buttons. My hope was that the bobbypins would distribute the weight across the foam and keep the buttons from tearing through the backing fabric.
Tumblr media
I'm mostly happy with how it looks, but I do think I should have made the distance between the buttons on the fabric a bit shorter. Maybe that would have fixed the wrinkles and made it look more taught. Oh well--I think this is pretty good for my first go at diamond tufting :P
One thing I am pretty proud of is the seam that I had to make in order for the fabric to be wide enough to fit the back. I had it follow the line where the pleat would go so you can't even see it now! My pattern piece:

The seam puckered a bit because the fabric was so tricky to maneuver being so thick and all. Didn't end up mattering in the end, though, once it was all pleated up.

I made another velvet mite, and this time I filmed it! Partly because a few people expressed interest in making one, but mostly because 3 of my last 4 videos have been over an hour long and I really wanted to edit something short. It's just under 20 minutes.

So I got the Uncute Max and while he is adorable and a great plush, the material he is made out of really disagreed with my sensory issues 🫠
So I'm making my own Max based on the Uncute Max using bunny minky! Head and tail are already finished and look how fluffy 🥰🥰

Me, pulling small pieces of fuzz off my face trying not to cry: I am stronger than this velvet. I can sew it. I’m smarter than the velvet. I can sew it.

Have about a yard of some ribbon that you like, but you can't find a project for?
May I suggest...
Hat bands?
Tumblr media
So far I've tested:
Buckles (above, just needs a tiny bit of hand sewing and poking a couple holes if your buckle has a tongue)
Those metal end clamps for making ribbon chokers (below, just needs basic comfort with pliers, has the option to add extra dangly beads and whatnot), and
No-sew snaps (not shown because I gave it away, very quick and easy but also the least adjustable if you want to move things between hats).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will say that buckles will probably give you the best fit if the ribbon is wider than an inch or so, noticeably stiff (jacquard or grosgrain instead of velvet or satin), and/or the crown of your hat has a noticeable taper that the ribbon needs to follow. You can see on the purple cat ribbon above how the ribbon pulls away from the hat at the top. If I were doing that one over, I'd use a buckle, or possibly two snaps with the top one pulled tighter.
Want a no-sew option?
Pin your trim in place with a pin-back brooch or stick pin or button pin! Fun to go thrifting for! Extra accessories! Very modular, and you can probably leave your trim fully intact in case you want to use it later! Alas I cannot endorse standard enamel pins for this because the back will rub against your head and be irritating. :(
In conclusion:
Hat bands!
