The Economic Impacts of Wastewater Treatment on Industries and Communities
Wastewater treatment plays a critical role in protecting public health and the environment. It also has significant economic impacts on industries and communities. Effective wastewater treatment can lead to reduced healthcare costs and improved water quality, which can attract businesses and support local economies. On the other hand, inadequate or outdated wastewater treatment infrastructure can result in water pollution, environmental damage, and harm to human health, which can negatively affect industries and communities. The costs of treating wastewater treatment plant can also impact industries, as they may have to bear the expense of treating their own wastewater or pay higher fees for municipal treatment services. Overall, wastewater treatment is a complex issue with wide-ranging economic impacts.

Started the day by reading this article from the NY times, and I'm frankly, disturbed.
Some highlights:
"For decades, farmers across America have been encouraged by the federal government to spread municipal sewage on millions of acres of farmland as fertilizer. It was rich in nutrients, and it helped keep the sludge out of landfills."
Which I knew, and I knew that there were concerns about contaminants from like, the medications people were on. But human waste is part of the nutrient cycle, and it always made sense to me that it should be throughly composted and returned to agricultural lands, and I assumed that people in general were taking the steps necessary to make it safe.
But here's what I didn't know:
"The 1972 Clean Water Act had required industrial plants to start sending their wastewater to treatment plants instead of releasing it into rivers and streams, which was a win for the environment but also produced vast new quantities of sludge that had to go somewhere."
Which, yay, no longer polluting bodies of water, but now that means we're applying industrial waste water to agricultural lands. And have been since 1972. Which leads to this situation, among many others, I'm sure:
"The sludge that allegedly contaminated the Colemans’ farm came from the City of Fort Worth water district, which treats sewage from more than 1.2 million people, city records show. Its facility also accepts effluent from industries including aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and auto manufacturing. Synagro takes the sludge and treats it (though not for PFAS, as it’s not required by law) then distributes it as fertilizer."
So here's what some states are doing:
"In Michigan, among the first states to investigate the chemicals in sludge fertilizer, officials shut down one farm where tests found particularly high concentrations in the soil and in cattle that grazed on the land. This year, the state prohibited the property from ever again being used for agriculture. Michigan hasn’t conducted widespread testing at other farms, partly out of concern for the economic effects on its agriculture industry.
In 2022, Maine banned the use of sewage sludge on agricultural fields. It was the first state to do so and is the only state to systematically test farms for the chemicals. Investigators have found contamination on at least 68 of the more than 100 farms checked so far, with some 1,000 sites still to be tested.
“Investigating PFAS is like opening Pandora’s box,” said Nancy McBrady, deputy commissioner of Maine’s Department of Agriculture."
This is fun:
"The E.P.A. is currently studying the risks posed by PFAS in sludge fertilizer (which the industry calls biosolids) to determine if new rules are necessary.
The agency continues to promote its use on cropland, though elsewhere it has started to take action. In April, it ordered utilities to slash PFAS levels in drinking water to near zero and designated two types of the chemical as hazardous substances that must be cleaned up by polluters. The agency now says there is no safe level of PFAS for humans...
It’s difficult to know how much fertilizer sludge is used nationwide, and E.P.A. data is incomplete. The fertilizer industry says more than 2 million dry tons were used on 4.6 million acres of farmland in 2018. And it estimates that farmers have obtained permits to use sewage sludge on nearly 70 million acres, or about a fifth of all U.S. agricultural land."
There's more, but I wanted to condense it at least a little bit. I am glad we're raising awareness, and I'm glad we're starting to regular the amount in our drinking water, and I hope that we'll find a way to actually deal with PFAS. I am so frustrated that people are exposed in the first place, and in nigh inescapable ways.
Also, to all those people who were like, oh, organic isn't at all healthier for consumers? Guess what the organic standards don't allow to be applied?

Indian IT Worker Designs New Eco-Friendly Sewage Treatment Method with the Sacred Cow as His Inspiration https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/indian-it-worker-designs-new-eco-friendly-sewage-treatment-method-with-the-sacred-cow-as-his-inspiration/
Tharun Kumar began to imagine ways to build a better sewage treatment method that could produce good quality water without chemicals.
In 2017, Kumar started ECOSTP with the chambered stomach of the cow as his “bovine inspiration.”
Typical wastewater plants use aerobic bacteria, or metabolism with oxygen, to break down sewage, but this requires the ventilation system that continually runs on energy. Regular sewage treatment also tends to use chemicals, and has the presence of a full-time employee. Kumar has eliminated almost all of these drawbacks.
At the base of the ECOSTP septic tank is a layer of cow dung that provides the bacterial workers. With the water moving via gravity, it enters the second bacterial chamber before passing into the third space which is a filter of sand and gravel. The fourth chamber lies under a garden of select vascular plants which removes suspended solids, pathogens, nitrogen, and phosphorus, the latter two going to feed the plants.
The resulting water is graded by health inspectors as good quality for toilet water and gardening applications. With the aid of a grant from the US-based Biomimicry Solutions, ECOSTP now has 325 clients across 22 states in India, and their septic tanks are unmanned and unpowered, saving thousands in running costs.
“We are proud to have reclaimed 2 billion liters of sewage so far without power or chemicals.”
ECOSTP is now seeing if it’s possible to identify anaerobic bacteria that can remove the harmful compounds of industrial effluent.

Chapter 3. Economy
Who will take out the trash?
If everyone is free to work as they choose, who will take out the trash or perform other undesirable jobs? Fortunately, in a localized, anti-capitalist economy, we could not externalize, or hide, the costs of our lifestyle by paying someone else to clean up after us. We would have to pay for the consequences of all our own actions — rather than paying China to take our toxic waste, for example. If a necessary service like garbage disposal were being neglected, the community would quickly notice and have to decide how to handle the problem. People could agree to reward such work with small perks — nothing that translates into power or authority, but something like getting to be first in line when exotic goods come into town, receiving a massage or a cake or simply the recognition and gratitude for being a stand-up member of the community. Ultimately, in a cooperative society, having a good reputation and being seen by your peers as responsible are more compelling than any material incentives.
Or the community could decide that everyone should involve themselves in these tasks on a rotating basis. An activity like garbage collection does not have to define anyone’s “career” in an anti-capitalist economy. Necessary tasks no one wants to perform should be shared by everyone. So instead of a few people having to sort through garbage their entire lives, everyone who was physically able would have to do it for just a couple hours each month.
The Christiania “free state” is a quarter in Copenhagen, Denmark, that has been squatted since 1971. Its 850 inhabitants are autonomous within their 85 acres. They have been taking out their own trash for over thirty years. The fact that they receive about one million visitors a year makes their achievement all the more impressive. The streets, buildings, restaurants, public toilets, and public showers are all reasonably clean — especially for hippies! The body of water that runs through Christiania is not the cleanest, but considering that Christiania is tree-covered and automobile free one suspects most of the pollution comes from the surrounding city that shares the waterway.
Residents have built dozens of the houses now standing in Christiania using innovative eco-designs. They also use:
solar power, wind power, composting and a whole host of other eco-friendly innovations. A method of filtering sewage through reed beds, which means water coming out of Christiania is as clean as that coming out from the rest of Copenhagen’s treatment plants, has helped the commune be shortlisted for a pan-Scandinavian award for ecological living.[38]
Different people interviewed had different conceptions of how Christiania was kept clean, suggesting a sort of dual system. A newcomer said that you cleaned up after yourself, and when you felt like doing some extra picking up, you did. An old-time resident who was more involved in decision-making explained there was a garbage committee, answerable to the “Common Meeting,” responsible for the bottom-line of keeping Christiania clean, though clearly voluntary assistance and cleanliness by all the residents was the first line of defense.

Moon settlement
Masterpost
The moon settlement is an ecosystem completely isolated from the external environment, a significant part of which is occupied by a Slime Lake, which fills not only the reservoir allocated to it, but also seeps into the adjacent layers of soil. Water circulation occurs naturally due to the fact that it evaporates from the surface of the lake and condenses on the dome, collecting in gutters specially designed for this purpose. Part of it is sent to the reservoir at the top of the tower, the other part flows into the ditch surrounding the entire settlement, from where it is distributed among the residents in the volume they need. Each sector is permeated by a dense network of water and sewer pipes. The sewage system is not directly connected to the lake, but first passes through treatment ponds filled with special plants that remove organic matter from the water. For the residential sectors and Garden/Greenhouse (marked in gray and green), only this type of treatment is sufficient, while the industrial sector (marked in red) is separated from the lake by an additional ring of treatment facilities, since its waste may contain more harmful and hazardous substances.
The main part of the settlement space is organized in tiers, where the roof of the lower one is at the same time the street of the upper one (each tier is 10 meters high and 30 meters wide and contains 2 living floors above the ground and 2 below it). In each of the sectors there is a square with teleports (60x60 meters), connecting the most remote parts of the settlement with each other. The central tower is also partly residential, but first of all it is a huge “office center”, where the hospital, royal library, architectural bureau, law enforcement and other departments are located.
On the lowest underground floor of the tower you can find that same teleport leading to the planet. It is constantly surrounded by water, so it was easier for the guards to hold the defense, however, the room with it is reliably isolated and cleaned manually so that the water, in case of poisoning by the infected, does not leak into the lake.

some practical thoughts for ~the commune~ (wherever and however that may be)
where is your commune going to be located? what is the region like? what kind of seasonal temperature changes do you have? what's your growing season and land fertility look like? do you plan to have an agricultural commune (which must be tethered to the land) or some other form? If you're going for agriculture, what's your reasonable expectation for crop yield? If you're going for something else, what do you plan to do about feeding the commune?
How are you going to provide shelter? Do you intend to build structures or use preexisting ones? What are your building codes going to look like? How are you planning to prevent disasters (carbon monoxide leaks/poisoning, fires, flooding from pipes, etc)? If your commune is going to be a roving one, what will you do to ensure that your mobile forms of housing provide protection from the elements (ie: if a storm hits)?
how do you plan to get goods you cannot manufacture? do you intend to forego them entirely? do you plan to trade with the outside world? If so, with what money? How will you ensure that trade stays sustainable?
In the event of a storage or food supply emergency (crop damage, etc) what will you do? In the event of a housing emergency (flood, fire, tornado, etc) what will you do? In the event of a medical emergency (outbreak of plague, contaminated water or food, etc) what will you do? Do you intend to have someone to coordinate minor and major emergency responses? You most certainly should have a system for this firmly in place before it happens... because it will happen.
Similarly, how do you plan to handle interpersonal problems? Does the commune have a designated moderator? How do you keep the moderator from acting along biased lines? What do you do if they just fucking hate someone else in the commune? Do you intend to have any interpersonal checks and balances to keep the commune from essentially icing out (potentially killing, in the case of a post-Revolution TM world) members of the commune who are less likeable than others?
Everyone wants to work on the commune, sure, but people are bad at self-management in practice and some jobs are not going to be glorious and pleasant no matter what happens. Who is going to handle management of waste like sewage if no one personally volunteers? Who is going to make sure that crops (f you're going to have crops) are planted in the right fields and that the fields that need to be rotated or planted according to specific crop strategies are being done that way? Who is going to take inventory and ensure that the commune as a whole has enough food, clothing, materials, etc to survive the coming months rather than just the coming days? Who is going to coordinate efforts like construction where various disparate parts need to be done in particular order by people with varied skillsets who cannot neccessarily do everyone else's jobs? The commune doesn't need a boss- but unmanaged projects fall apart, and if projects on the commune go entirely unmanaged, eventually the projects falling apart won't just be pleasure projects but will be important events that might mean the difference between starvation or freezing in winter or houses collapsing and them not doing that.
Everyone asks the medicine question and that's for good reason. How are you going to handle the disabled population on your commune? How do you manufacture ADHD medications, insulin, wheelchairs, etc in a commune setting with probably only very small-scale manufacturing systems? Do you plan to have space for physically disabled and/or neurodivergent members of your commune? How will you provide a "buffer" for individuals who cannot work temporarily (due to injury or age) or permanently (due to any number of factors) in your commune? No member of the commune will be able to reliably work consistently. Likewise, what will you do for medical treatment?
Possibly the most important one - when is this commune going to be built? Do you need to work around existing regimes? Is it tomorrow, next year, next century? is it after the Glorious Revolution fixes everything so you don't have to worry about it? How does this affect your commune? Do you have to pay communal taxes, do you have to worry about zoning laws and oppressive police structures, do you need to worry about "trespassing" and "vagrancy"? Alternately, if the Outside World is gone and it's all communes, what does your emergency medical treatment system (hospitals and trauma wards, the stuff that wouldn't need to be in constant operation on a small commune but which are absolute requirements if you want people to survive things like bad burns or certain medical issues or some kinds of serious interpersonal violence) look like? Is there an inter-commune safety net in place? What of vaccination projects and other widespread methods of keeping people alive that need to be distributed among as many people as possible? How do you pass knowledge from commune to commune?
You don't have to be able to answer all these questions right now, and you don't have to answer them to me at all. But you should be able to answer them before the answers become relevant. The absolute last time you want to be answering the "what do we do when someone needs surgery or they will actually die in real life" question is when someone is bleeding out at your feet; the last time you want to have to answer the "who handles human shit and how do we handle it?" question is when someone has dysentery or e. coli because someone's mismanaged sewage got into the commune's water supply.

What is Hospital Sewage and Why Its Treatment is Necessary?
Hospital sewage refers to the wastewater generated from various activities within a healthcare facility, including patient care, laboratory procedures, laundry, and sanitation. This sewage contains a complex mixture of biological and chemical contaminants, making it significantly different from domestic sewage. The presence of pathogens, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and radioactive materials necessitates specialized treatment to ensure environmental and public health safety.
The Composition of Hospital Sewage
Hospital sewage is laden with microorganisms, including pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Additionally, it contains a variety of chemicals such as antibiotics, disinfectants, and heavy metals. The concentration of these hazardous substances poses a significant risk if discharged untreated into the environment. This makes the treatment of hospital sewage crucial for preventing the spread of infections, protecting aquatic life, and safeguarding public health.
The Necessity of Treating Hospital Sewage
Public Health Protection: Untreated hospital sewage can release harmful pathogens into the water supply, potentially causing waterborne diseases. The use of bioculture for sewage treatment plants, specifically designed to target and neutralize these pathogens, is essential in mitigating this risk.
Environmental Safety: Chemical contaminants in hospital sewage can disrupt ecosystems and harm aquatic life. Implementing biological additives for STPs helps in breaking down these chemicals, making the water safe for discharge.
Regulatory Compliance: Hospitals are required to comply with stringent environmental regulations. Utilizing microbial culture for STPs ensures that the effluent meets these regulatory standards, avoiding hefty fines and legal issues.
Treatment Solutions for Hospital Sewage
One effective method for treating hospital sewage is aerobic wastewater treatment, which involves the use of oxygen-loving bacteria to decompose organic matter. The manufacturer of bacterial culture plays a critical role in providing high-quality bioculture for STP systems. These biological cultures are essential for maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of sewage treatment processes.
PureBact Solutions
PureBact offers a range of products designed to enhance the treatment of hospital sewage. Our biological culture for sewage treatment plants, such as PureBact 10, is engineered to optimize the breakdown of complex contaminants. By using our advanced bacteria culture for STP, hospitals can achieve superior treatment results, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and promoting public health.
