Songs That Remind Me of My Fics Vol. 8: Numb by Linkin Park

This song is so Severus-coded to me. It screams Severus in canon, and also in my Moonlight Quartet, particularly from Half-Blood Prince onwards. I feel like he's just interiorly screaming these lyrics at Albus, begging to be allowed to move on with his life, even when he knows he can't.

I've gotten more writing time this week than last week, so I am up to 5758/20K words for this month. I've also gotten distracted doing a Bridgerton rewatch before part 1 of season 3 drops tonight.

I'm focusing on Kairos again this week. Sanguini is having a moment in the scene I'm working on now:

Snow Angel by Reneé Rapp has got me all up in my feels. It's giving me Miranda Rose/Severus Snape trying to make it through Kairos in Retrograde vibes

(I heard this song live on SNL for the first time, and it's an awesome performance)

tell us about Kairos in Retrograde!

Oh boy!

So, Kairos in Retrograde is Part 3 of my canon adjacent Snape/OC saga. At this point in the story, we're in the Deathly Hallows section of the timeline, so everything is a mess and all dark and twisty. The OC is Miranda Rose, an American Muggleborn (or No-Maj born as she would say) witch, who works as a magical bounty hunter. She and Sev met in the summer between GoF and OotP, and had an on again-off again relationship until the end of OotP when they were pretty well on for good. She is an honorary member of the Order of the Phoenix (not official b/c of MACUSA stuff) and is currently acting as an Auror to help with the Ministry's Auror shortage. By the end of the HBP timeline, Miranda and Severus were about to get married. Unfortunately, the Death Eater attack on Hogwarts and Albus's murder got in the way of that.

While Miranda was very aware of Severus's being a spy/double agent, Severus neglected to tell her about how he was going to be offing Albus. So now she doesn't know what to think. Like, she still loves him and hopes that he's somehow on the right side of things, but it's hard to keep believing that when there's all this evidence to the contrary.

Things are made all the worse as Kairos opens, because neither she nor Severus can openly approach the other to explain anything. Severus is wanted by both the Ministry and the Order; and while Remus and Minerva vouched for Miranda's being innocent of any of Severus's crimes, not everyone trusts that she is innocent, so she can't really step out of line.

I'm excited/intimidated to dig into this book, because I think that the DH timeline has the biggest of all missing moments: what happened at Hogwarts while Harry and CO. were busy camping? And I'm also working in a Bigger Bad that will be the main villain when I get to the fourth and final installment of the saga: The Quick and the Dead.

WiP Wednesday 22 January 2025

I am finally getting back in the groove of writing Kairos in Retrograde. This is encouraging, because last week I could hardly think about it without feeling completely overwhelmed by how dang LONG it's going to be. But I've pulled back and am just trying to focus on the chapter I'm currently working on, and not worry about how much further we have to go.

Here's a peek at the beginning of chapter 13 as it now stands:

Miranda ducked, sliding under the vicious ax swing just in time to avoid losing the top of her head. She rolled to her feet, whipping around to hex Pryderi’s exposed back. Or, what would have been Pryderi’s exposed back. In the millisecond it had taken her to turn, Pryderi had spun around, deflecting her hex back at her with the flat of his enchanted ax. She dodged right, and the hex flew over her shoulder, crashing into the stone circle guarding Cadfael’s house, scorching the rock. “Careful, Del,” Pryderi said, a mad grin on his grizzled face. “Cadfael’ll have your head if you wreck his fence.” “If you don’t take it first,” Miranda said, gamely dodging another ax swing. “I don’t think it’s fair for you to have an enchanted ax and me to have a wand.” “All fighting is dirty fighting. Don’t forget it,” Pryderi said.

I am trying to get back into the regular writing routine, now that my poetry workshop is over. I got 300-ish words down on the next chapter of Kairos (my OG Snape/OC) AND I figured out how to make the display text in Scrivener bigger, so I am no longer squinting at it in split-screen mode.

Werewolf by Fiona Apple reminds me of both Severus and Miranda, and Remus and Tonks. They have such tumultuous relationships. When things are good, they're so good, but all four of them have such strong personalities that sometimes they're like a wishing well and a bolt of electricity. There's really nothing wrong with a song that ends in a minor key.

Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams is SUCH a Severus Snape song. I see this playing in the background at the end of libera nos a malo, when Severus is out in the Greybacks' garden alone, Albus is dead, he'll probably never see Miranda again, and everything is just awful.

It's WiP Wednesday again--tell me about your projects!

I'm on the last scene of chapter 9 of Kairos in Retrograde and things are starting to cook. I'm super excited because I think I've found a place for Severus's Brummie accent to come out. I think that Severus grew up in the Midlands speaking in a Brummie accent. He immediately worked to get rid of said accent as soon as he got to Hogwarts, where he learned to speak all posh like Lucius Malfoy and co. But about a year or so ago I thought it would be awesome to have Sev get so rattled that he accidentally starts speaking in his Brummie accent again and HERE WE ARE!

My goal going forward is to write 500 words a day on Kairos. If I can keep that pace, I think I will be able to start posting chapters again in September.

You Know I'm No Good by Amy Winehouse takes me back to chapter two of Moonlight, book one of the Moonlight Quartet. Severus and Miranda have just run into each other (literally) for the first time, and neither of them is exactly sure what to make of the other. I would say that both of them would sing this song about themselves AND about each other at this point in the story.

(Someday I should really write the first couple chapters of Moonlight from Miranda's PoV as a one shot...what WAS she thinking???)

From Chapter 1:

It was a shit day. They’d all been shit days since Lily died.

If he were being fair, he’d admit that they’d all been shit days, even before they’d put Lily in the ground six months ago.

But life had never been fair to Severus Snape. Why would he be fair to it?

It was Lupin that fucked things up this time. The second Severus’d hit the locker room, Lupin was there, saying hello with that sheepish smile he wore whenever he’d done something fucking stupid. Severus barely got his uniform on before he was called up to the front.

Lupin was suddenly way too interested in the paint peeling off the wall.

Great. This was going to be fucking wonderful.

Severus glared at the clock—twenty minutes to Roll Call. Too much time to pretend he didn’t hear the summons. With a snarl, he stalked out into the hallway, the flickering fluorescent lights casting blue shadows on his pasty skin. Would it kill them to use some LEDs? Fluorescents were the goddamn devil.

“What?” he said when he reached the reception desk.

Aurora Sinistra barely looked up at him. “Hello to you, too. Potter’s in the lobby. He wants to talk to you.”

God. Severus had barely wanted to talk to Lily’s husband when she’d been alive. Why the hell would he want to talk to James fucking Potter now?

“Tell him I’m busy.”

Aurora tapped her cherry red nails on the counter. Once upon a time, she used to scratch those down Severus’s back. But she’d gotten sick of waiting for him to get over another man’s wife.

To tell the truth, so had Severus.

“He’s been here for an hour. You’re going to talk to him. Or you tell him why you won’t.”

2023 Writing Wrap-up

I ended the year at 174,448 words. This was another year where it felt very hard to write much of the time. But in the end, the bits that I did write added up.

Sevranda once again is the bulk of my words. But Sned was a super fun detour.
