holy shit that might have been my favorite Severance episode yet

(Spoilers below for S2E6 “Attila”)

The razor sharp tension throughout, everything is so thick and messy right now, the fucking ETHICS of it all. The most fraught fucking 50 minutes of moral conundrums I’ve ever seen. It had everything: Sex, consent, love, death, god, the soul and afterlife, lies and betrayal, sweetness and connection in the most unfuckingfathomably dark and complicated situations.

I can’t fucking handle this show. Every single plot thread and relationship is driving me completely apoplectic.

“X Company,” I have doubts

Yet another firearms-related post.  Sorry, but this is the sort of thing the squirrels in my brain obsess over...

In s2e06 (”Black Flag”), the team set out to assassinate Generalfeldmarschall Brandt.  The first attempt is a classic sniper setup from a rooftop, with Tom spotting for Neil and a much too bloodthirsty Harry acting as lookout for their exit route.

(NB: I am by no means an expert on WWII-era weapons - I’m seriously spitballing here.  Most of my experience is with modern firearms, so if anyone has more solid, specific information, please let me know so I can make corrections!)

As the scene opens, we see a closeup (terrible pic, but this is the only one I could find) of Neil modifying a bullet:

Tom: I find the bullets tend to work better inside the gun. Neil: We're going to get one shot at this before every copper in the city comes running. This way the bullet expands on impact, makes it count.

There are a couple issues with this. 

The bullet seen here is neither standard issue FMJ (full metal jacket) ball ammunition, in which the projectile is fully encased in a harder metal, nor AP (armor-piercing).  You can use a hack saw to cut off the nose of a FMJ bullet and expose the lead inside, then smooth the cut edges with a file (this was supposedly the origin of the illegal dum-dum bullet, as hollow-point and easily fragmenting bullets were banned for use in warfare by the Hague Convention of 1899), but this bullet is made of cast lead.  I highly doubt that Neil has the equipment and supplies to make bullets and load ammo in their makeshift camp.  

Not only that, it doesn’t even look like the same round he’s shown loading into his rifle a few seconds later:

Let’s leave aside the improbability of his procuring nonstandard ammunition.  Neil is correct that an expanding bullet will cause more severe wounding - FMJ projectiles often simply pierce completely through the target, and may also cause unintentional damage to whatever (and whoever) is downrange.  But while cutting a groove into the tip will make the bullet more likely to flatten out and expand within the target, it will almost certainly also negatively affect the bullet’s accuracy in flight - and there are already a bunch of factors stacking the odds against him. 

Tom: (estimating the distance to the general’s car) One, maybe one-fifty. [yards, presumably] Neil: Let's call it one twenty-five. Tom: The wind’s picking up, coming from the northwest.

Neil might be “the weapons guy,” but expecting him to make a precision shot under windy conditions at an uncertain distance greater than the length of a football field with a standard issue M1 Garand (at least I think that’s what it is - please correct me if I’m wrong!) only partially supported in kneeling position and with only iron sights?
