Quote
At the beginning of Mary's reign, she had confidently believed that the Habsburg alliance would bring wealth to England. By the middle of 1557 inflation was worse than ever recorded. A working man's wage is generally quoted as having risen from fourpence a day to sevenpence. Beef, however, was fourpence a pound, [and] eggs had risen to a startling price of two for a penny, so that a dozen would account for almost the whole of a man's daily pay. John Ponet, the former Bishop of Winchester, who had fled abroad at the end of Edward's reign, wrote a forceful pamphlet, 'A Short Treatise of Politic Power', in which he described the people of England being 'driven of hunger to grind acorns for bread meal, and to drink water instead of ale.' At court, the Spanish pensions with which Philip [II] had hoped to buy the loyalty of Mary's leading councillors were mostly twelve months in arrears by the beginning of 1558, although Feria reminded Philip to keep up those which he considered most vital, in particular to the Admirals, Lord William Howard, and later Clinton.

“Upon this, the parish authorities authorities magnanimously and humanly resolved that Oliver should be ‘farmed,’ or, in other words, that he should be dispatched to a branch-workhouse some three miles off, where twenty or thirty other juvenile offenders against the poor-laws, rolled about the floor all day, without inconvenience of too much food or too much clothing, under the parental superintendente of an elderly female, who received the culprits at and for the consideration of sevenpence-halfpenny per small head per week.”
9 COMMAS. JUST MAKE THEM SENTENCES PLEASE!!
Is there a logical reason he uses so many commas? /gen
hey Charles?….Charles dickens? Why the hell do you need to use so many commas??? Like I thought I used too many but this? Sir, this is truly unacceptable.

February, probably:
I wanna tell you one story. This was the best meal I've ever had in my life, alright? This happened just before Christmas a few years back, and it took place at a little restaurant called The Salt and Pepper Diner. Yes, yes, you know the Salt and Pepper diner? It's a restaurant in that corner area between Union Wolfstack, Veilgarden, and Benthic, which means that it caters mainly to exhausted union dockworkers, drunk bohemians, and academics half out of their minds on the Correspondence. Wonderful place.
Now I go into this place one day with my friend Edmund. We walk into the Salt and Pepper diner one day, and they had one of those weird new record players there, alright? And the record player was three plays for a penny, so we put in sevenpence, and selected twenty-one plays of God Save The Queen And then we ordered and waited.
Here's the thing about when God Save The Queen plays over and over and over and over and over again. The second time it plays, your immediate thought is not, "Hey someone's playing God Save The Queen again." It's, "Hey, God Save The Queen is a lot longer than I first thought." The third time it plays, you're thinking maybe someone's playing God Save The Queen again. The fourth time it plays you're thinking, "Whoa. Someone just played God Save The Queen four times, or at least someone played it twice, and it's a really long song." So, the fifth time is the kicker. Now, we're watching the entire diner at this point.
Most people have gotten wind as to what's going on, and we're staring at January, and she's sitting in her booth and her hand is shaking like she's been on to us since the beginning. She's staring at us, and the fourth play fades out. It's dead quiet, and then, you hear "GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN!" and she goes, "Goddammit!" and she pounds on the table, and silverware flies everywhere and it was fantastic.
But a word about my friend Edmund, and what a genius he was because, when we were first up at the record player and we were punching in the God Save The Queen, alright? I'd punched in seven, and then Edmund says to me, "Hey, hey, hey wait. Let's put in one Carol of the Bells. And that is when the afternoon went from good to great.
After seven plays, and the sigh of relief has swept through the diner; people were ecstatic. It was like the Liberation of Night had come early. You know, for years, scientists have wondered, can you make grown men and women weep tears of joy by playing Carol of the Bells and the answer is yes, yes, you can, as long as it is preceded by seven God Save The Queens.
And on the other hand, when we went back. Holy shit. Carol of the Bells fades out. It's dead quiet. Then, "GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN!"
People went fucking insane. No one could handle it. No one could handle it, and they were surrounded by like this seemingly indifferent staff, you know, that was just like, "Yep, same shit as always." My only wish is that one of those Correspondence students had stood up and been like, "Now you know. Now you know what it's like to live in my brain."
They unplug the record player after eleven plays, and the next time we saw her, January cursed us out in five different languages and called us all counter-revolutionary bastards. And that was the best meal I ever had.
