Serial #7
Serial #7 Abstract Studios 2021 By Terry Moore Zoe plays a dangerous game of predator-prey with a clever psychopath terrorizing a seaside town. With the police in hot pursuit, Zoe lays a risky trap for the killer and prepares for what may be her final day on earth. Zoe is just one messed up little girl. Not her current prey is any less messed up and yet this still makes for some incredibly interesting reading about how two wrongs don’t make a right. With the opening here we see how Miss Rose’s daughter keeps sending her blocks of items to show just what she’s doing and how her upbringing has irrevocably changed the course of her life. This is like one of those true crime podcasts that details how someone’s upbringing was so traumatic that in their adult life they’ve become something of a serial killer exactly revenge of those who do what was done to her. This makes things inherently fascinating and yet perversely frightening and yet the desire to look away is removed once you start reading. Terry is a modern master storyteller and there’s no denying his ability to weave a tale that is so dark and twisted that reminds us that everyday can be Halloween. I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job in bringing us their personalities. The pacing is excellent and how it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way manages to draw us further and further into the story. I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. That these layers open up new avenues to be explored is exciting to see. What these avenues do is add some wonderful depth, dimension and complexity to the story. I also like how we see the forethought going into how we see the actions unfold and how certain things are dealt with. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is immaculately achieved. Oh my stars and garters are the interiors here so delightful to see. Yes I wish we’d see more backgrounds primarily in Miss Rose’s room and Carly’s office. Otherwise how we see them utilised throughout really do enhance and expand the moments perfectly. They also work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The linework is exquisite and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality of detail we see within the work is astonishing. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling. Black & white is the hardest medium to work in because it will potentially show any and all flaws but Terry’s so good at what he does that I couldn’t imagine seeing this any other way. Why more people don’t talk about this series is beyond me. This is so masterfully written and illustrated to such a degree that it should constantly be winning awards and accolades for just how well this is presented. The impact of the storytelling and how involved, invested and engaged that the reader becomes through reading this book is immeasurable. If you’ve not read this I urge you to get this series, so far it’s only seven issues so it's easy to catch up and you won’t be disappointed that I can promise. I wish I had interiors to run with this and show you what exactly you may be missing out on, regardless go to your local shop or online at your favourite store and get yoursef at the very least the first issue.

Psycho Path #1
Psycho Path #1 (of 3) Space Goat Productions 2017 Written by Stefani Manard Illustrated by Paul Gori Coloured by Whitney Cook Lettered by Ted Woods Cover by Carlos Villas Y’all know that I love my indie books and those that publish them and over the years I’ve come to really like the stuff that Space Goat Productions puts out. They may not have books as often as some others but when they publish something you know it’s going to be good! Now there’s a whole thing about the cover versus the interior artwork, on one hand yes it would be nice it if represented what was inside but on the other it’s the first thing you see and it has to make a statement to catch your eye and make you pick it up and look at it. Carlos Bravissimo because this is a stunning cover and does what its supposed to and so much more. Ah one of the best covers I personally have seen this year! So once you see the cover and pick up the book inside you are going to find a story that I guarantee you aren’t expecting! I love the pacing that Stefani brings to this she has a great sense of how things should flow and when to release information so that we all have we need to both be informed and for speculation of what we think is going on. For instance Zach seems like a good kid, a bit lonely or a loner and could possibly be gay but we don’t know and considering the actions of what we see I wouldn’t be surprised. Though it’s not really his sexuality that is an issue it’s his home life and who he’s destined to become. I’m super impressed with the characterisation that we get here. From Zach in school and leading to the moment seven months later as we see his life change and his comfort level grow. Stefani manages to convey the change in Zach’s personality without having to really delve into needless wording and that’s a rare ability. It’s not just her though because Paul is a huge component in that as well. His facial expressions are noticeably important to how we perceive Zach as boy and a man. While Paul may have that beginners feel to the look it’s rather quite solid. He’s got his own style that feels familiar and indie and yet manges to beautifully convey the emotions and feelings going on at any given moment. His use of page layouts through their angles and perspective show a great eye for storytelling. Also not going to lie I adore the fact he knows how utilise backgrounds in his panels and his attention to detail and knowledge of human anatomy are splendid! While there is a moment in this issue that’s borderline erotic it’s beautifully done and really solidified my appreciation for his ability and skills. So what are the events in someone’s life that could fundamentally change who you are and what direction your life is going to go in? That’s not something we tend to think about it really is more akin to our nightmares than our dreams and that too is something Stefani manages to get across. I love that there’s this complex subtlety to her writing that you can see what she means without having to be bombarded with it in the wording or narration. The way this flows shows us what these events in Zach’s life are going to shape and mold him into being something I doubt even he ever thought he could be. I’m shocked and in awe of one moment in this that for me was the tipping point, that piece of straw that broke the Camel’s back if you will. I wholeheartedly admit that this would be one of those documentaries on Netflix that would change the general populations mindscape on how a psychopath is made. Forget Making of a Murderer as you know it because this fictionalised version is much more fun, interesting and thought provoking. So contact your shoppe, or subscription service and have them order this for you, trust me you’ll thank me later.
