Tiger #2
I shared my experience about our tiger sighting in my last post, at that time, our guide said to us.. ‘’ Jyachya kade patience..tyala tiger” [ whoever has patience, gets to see the tiger ]
The next two posts are going to be about our encounters in the forest, some close misses and the test of our patience which was rewarded later..
Let’s start with our first jungle safari trip together, we decided to go to Madhya Pradesh and visit two Tiger Reserves - Bandhavgarh and Kanha..We first arrived at Bandhavgarh and had three safaris booked, it was the very first time for us going on a jungle safari in individual jeep, so we didn't know what to expect, I had been to Ramthambore on a college trip but that was in a cantor and the vehicle was making such a racket that i had lost any hope of spotting a tiger five mins in. This was different, We woke up at 4 a.m., got geared up with our cameras, water and a breakfast basket packed by the hotel and were ready to leave by 5.15 a.m.. A driver came to pick us up at the hotel where we were staying which was situated on the outskirts of the park, and then we reached the main gate within minutes, where our pass was checked along with our government ids and we were allotted a guide. We then entered the jungle at 6 a.m., and I was bowled over by the silence and I immediately fell in love! For the first few minutes, until our ears and brain adjusted to this calm, it felt like someone had held their hands against my ears and I felt some sort of pressure against them, we were going deeper within the forest now, just us four, me, baba, the guide and the driver. Slowly my ears opened up,started taking in the noises and the whole place started coming to life, the musical chirping of the birds, monkeys jumping from one branch to the other, deers grazing and it was such a beautiful feeling to sit there in that jeep, going further in the green jungle surrounded by this white noise and yet feeling absolutely silent!
Then we heard a sharp note, thats when our guide explained to us what a ‘call’ was. I remember thinking then, that we communicate for our gain, our pleasure or our need, but the jungle communicates just to inform, the tiger on the ground is no threat to a monkey sitting high on the treetops or to the bird in the sky, but they still give a call, to alert the others. With time we learnt to recognise the different calls, different in two ways, the source of the call, i.e. Monkey, different species of Deer, Peacock, different birds etc and the intensity of the call, a mild one, just to indicate the presence of the tiger or one that warns about its movement.
We saw the sun rise and go from mild lovely sunlight to harsh hot sun, and we returned to our resort happy with our experience, not extremely sad about not seeing a tiger, because it is a matter of luck and probability, more the safaris, higher is the chance of seeing the tiger. We didn't get to see the tiger but we saw various other animals, like the Indian Gaur, a Fox, mongoose and numerous birds! But we definitely felt a sense of let down when we heard that another family staying at our resort saw a family of tigers in a different zone than the one we went to, one male, one female and three cubs, feasting on a kill!
After lunch, we set out again for our evening safari with new hope in our hearts, and like in Tadoba we went to wait near a large pond, we saw various birds there, we waited till the very last minute possible, but no tiger. Having realised that we were cutting it really fine the driver sped up on our way back to the gate, and suddenly Baba spotted something running towards the road, but by the time the driver realised and put the brakes and slowly reversed back the creature had retreated in the foliage but through the leaves we saw a Sloth bear with a cub on its back hoping to cross the small path made for the cars.. The guide said that we were lucky indeed as a sloth bear sighting is even rare than that of a tiger as their population is less as compared to tigers and they are mostly nocturnal and having black fur they are difficult to spot when the sun is about to go down [ time of the closing of the park at 6.30pm ]
On reaching our hotel, as we were having tea along with other tourists, and exchanging our experience, a guest told us that he had been going on safaris for three weeks and there hadn't been a single sighting in the zone in which we had all our bookings, owing to the jungle fire that had taken place a week prior to our visit which had driven all the animals further in the forest and it was a surprise that we saw the sloth bear! That night after dinner, I had the most terrifying 3 minutes of my life.. The hotel had a common area for the guests to come together and have their meals, a gondola on the porch for tea time and a restaurant for sit down meals. The food-hall was the only room that had tv and it being IPL season me and baba would sit and watch the match after dinner, that night too, we were there till 11.30 or so and were returning to our rooms, which were all positioned like camping tents..in a circular fashion with a zig-zag garden path connecting them to the restaurant. There were no proper lights, just some vintage lamps and fairy lights to illuminate the path. So we had to use flashlights from our phones to get to the room.
As we were half way to our room I noticed that it was eerily silent, just the rustling of the wind and as a breeze reached us, we got a very foul smell.. Like something had been rotting for a long time, or like the smell of yogurt gone bad, and I went blank for a minute, that thing they show in movies when one freezes and recollects something, I experienced that and I could here our guide telling us that, ‘a tiger stinks, as it devours raw flesh and if it doesn't clean itself well, it starts to reek, so apart from calls, the stink is also used to identify its presence’. Me and baba both looked at each other and immediately we knew we were both thinking the same thing, He flashed the light he was holding to his right and I was so scared, what if it jumped out at us, I begged him to keep walking, not daring to look even an inch out of my way nor to make any sudden movements, just walked quickly to the room, finding our way with the help of our flashlights and as we got in the room, I asked baba to bolt the door shut and then we both looked out of the window to see if there was any sign of the tiger around but we couldn't see anything as there was no light outside. From the safety of our room, we flashed the lights everywhere they could reach, but we couldn't see it.
I couldn't sleep a wink that night, this scenario kept going on and on in my mind. We woke up and got ready the next morning, the tiger still on our minds, and I was scared to step out initially, but we checked once through the window and then left the room. When we narrated our experience to the hotel staff, they were all awestruck and one of them informed us that a calf from the barn just outside the hotel gate had been snatched by a tiger! We were wide eyed only just realising what a close call we had!

2021.09.05
i’m listening to nightclubbing by grace jones (because i saw it mentioned in a pitchfork article about album art) in my friend’s apartment (because i am watching her dog while she works late). today has been the most magical day for walking! but first: i woke up at 8:30 in my clothes from the previous night, surrounded by the remnants of the dumplings i’d bought from the place down the block at 4am on the way home; i had meant to go to the farmers’ market in the morning to buy bread and peaches, and to dispose of our compost, but i spent too much time lying hungoverly on my bed with my wet hair wrapped in a t-shirt 1) setting up a date with an acquaintance-of-a-friend and 2) listening to the yankees game (they were up 4-1 when i finally left, on a gary sanchez grand slam) and when i finally got my ass over to the park (at 3:30pm; it is half a block away) i found that the vendors were all packing up. so i thought about getting an indulgent coffee (either gregory’s salted caramel cold brew or starbucks’ brown sugar oatmilk etc etc etc) but it was a perfectly gray day, as the yankees commentators were saying a great day for baseball but more relevantly to me, a great day to walk aimlessly around lower manhattan instead of completing my bluebook exercises. i got a notification as i was crossing delancey street that gary sanchez had homered again and i had the unbidden thought that not only had god breathed on him, god had spat in his mouth - and i also thought that that was blasphemous, and that blasphemous would be more fun to say if it were “blasphemious.” (maybe it is somewhere, or was sometime.) i went to the sweet pickle bookstore in the lower east side which 1) sells pickles and 2) started BLASTING just like heaven as i walked in which is a moment i’ll never forget, obviously, like the time just like heaven played in that irish bar in honolulu, and i had to buy not one book but two books even though i haven’t read a book in nearly two weeks (which is uncharacteristic! but i did start school nearly two weeks ago). then i wandered westward and somehow the orioles were leading the yankees, i saw the game on a massive tv as i was crossing bowery. i walked through little italy, down mulberry, and spotted the CANNOLI KING sign (at caffe palermo, which is where i got cannoli with carl and gabby the night after sam moved me into my new apartment). that was good cannoli; the cannoli i had two nights ago (at veniero’s) was not as good imo. (also the cannoli i had at that pizza place in jersey last saturday; that was also good cannoli.) un cannolo, due cannoli. i admire italy, italians, italian-americans... i started to make my way back home, straight on west 3rd. i stopped at a vintage pop-up where i debated buying a mesh leopard print tee but thought better of it, i noted the presence of a taqueria i wanted to try (i think on 1st ave?), it was the bottom of the ninth and the yankees were down 8-7. incredibly after gary sanchez’s grand slam a couple of hours earlier, and i hadn’t walked two blocks before i got the notification that the game was over and that the yankees had lost, lol. to the orioles!!! i went home to grab my laptop and snagged a high table at the bean on 2nd ave, which is now my favorite place to work because of the high table (i don’t know why i work so much better on them but i do; they give me somewhere to put my long legs. i am not bragging; it is a fact that my legs are long.) i completely bungled the exercises i had to do because i didn’t notice that there were two columns on the page of the book i was looking at. sam’s usual dogsitting friend had fallen through and she had to work late so she texted me asking if i could take over, and i was more than happy to; i speed walked to her place in midtown, stopping for food at this build-your-own-bowl indian place (i am eating it now; i’d eat it again). it was a perfect walk, and i felt like i was dressed for it: backpack, little bag with keys + phone, sweatshirt, tennis skirt with built-in shorts so i don’t have to worry about my backpack pulling the skirt up (which is what i was worried about all of thursday). i listened to just like heaven (heard, as i mentioned, in the bookstore), dancing in the dark (heard at the bean), a little less sixteen candles (what i listened to while walking home from soho yesterday afternoon). what else should i add to this playlist that contains only songs to the beat of which i could walk 30-40 blocks on a fall day like yesterday (sunny) or like today (gray)? (the dog is doing well; i am here with him now; he is a sweetie, he got a bone from me, he misses his real mother but is tolerating me, his aunt. we get along! he’s watching me type!)

Top 5 West Indies cricketers in IPL history
There's an unmistakable comparability between the vision of cricket the Indian Premier League (IPL) has confidence in and the Caribbean way to deal with the game. That the IPL brings the 'best kind of the West Indies young men', as recognized by Mumbai Indians' Harbhajan Singh, is a demonstration of the way that the much-scrutinized brotherhood of the IPL lives in ideal amicability with the fun-factor that any semblance of Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard look for in their cricket.Among all the madness, in any case, those from the place where there is Sir Vivian Richards keep on setting up their aptitude in the most brief configuration of the game with no less strut. Here we investigate five West Indies cricketers whose consistency in the IPL has constrained their group to handle them routinely disregarding the unfamiliar players' limitations they are exposed to.
#5 Dwayne Smith
Another batsman entirely fit to T20 cricket, Dwayne Smith was reputed to have been perceived as a promising youth by the legend Viv Richards himself. In any case, in spite of having ground-breaking method and a bunch of shots, Smith hasn't been predictable enough to solidify his place in the public side.
His IPL details are undeniably more noteworthy however. The right-hander midpoints 30.85 at a strike-pace of more than 135 out of 60 IPL coordinates so far with 11 fifties and a most noteworthy of 87. Albeit carefully not an allrounder, his profession count of 15 wickets in 28 innings typifies the measure of flexibility he offers.
The eighth version of the IPL has seen Smith opening the innings for Chennai close by Brendon McCullum with the pair supplementing each other well and scoring runs in elective matches.
#4 Kieron Pollard
Kieron Pollard is such a legendary allrounder you would consistently need in your group. He can pull off robust blows with the bat, can be utilized as a floater in the line-up, can turn his arm over for a few overs at the demise and can be trusted aimlessly anyplace in the field.
No big surprise he was marked by the Mumbai Indians in a sudden death round for an undisclosed sum after the offering cycle had arrived at the most elevated constraint of $750,000. After two or three frustrating seasons in 2011 and 2012, Pollard returned in 2013 with restored life scoring 420 runs in 18 matches. As he guided his group to the title, the man of the match in the last finished the mission with no under 10 valuable wickets.
The 27-year-old stays a best option allrounder for the Mumbai outfit with a vocation hit pace of 147.18 with the bat and 54 wickets in 72 innings with the ball. Aside from his adventures with bat and ball, he has additionally hoarded features throughout the years for utilizing his tall edge and finishing unimaginable gets in the outfield.
#3 Dwayne Bravo
One of the commonplace results of the West Indies school of cricket, Dwayne Bravo's colorfulness and energy for the sport of cricket makes him one of the most adored cricketers on the planet today. His wristy class as a batsman and capacity to peruse the batsman while bowling in the end overs have demonstrated amazingly valuable for the Chennai Super Kings and made him one of the most pined for abroad cricketers in the IPL.
Bravo has been with the Super Kings since the time 2011, after a short stretch with the Mumbai Indians. In 2012, he amassed 461 runs, averaging 46 at a strike-pace of 140. His adventures with the ball one year from now earned him the Purple Cap for 32 wickets at 15.00 each.
The allrounder's consistency in both the divisions, combined with his electric handling in the profound, makes him completely indispensable for the Chennai outfit.
#2 Sunil Narine
When Gautam Gambhir had gained the administrations of a youthful, mohawked Trinidadian at the 2012 IPL closeout, none had foreseen the riches he would bring to the group in the next months. When KKR had finished a successful mission without precedent for a very long time, Player of the Tournament Sunil Narine had just amassed 24 scalps - the second most elevated in that version.
The offspinner's secret kept on bewildering batsmen in 2013 when he rose with 22 scalps in 16 matches. Accomplishment in the IPL slowly made ready for his consistency in public hues. 69 wickets from 52 IPL matches is sufficiently great, all the more so when one considers the tightfisted economy of 5.93 runs per over.
Albeit right now restricted from conveying off-breaks because of a questionable activity, there's no uncertainty that Narine is a fundamental gear-tooth in KKR's bowling line-up and will keep on being so later on.
#1 Chris Gayle
The Jamaican southpaw had been one of the cynosures of the debut IPL season after he was gobbled up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for an ordering USD 800,000. A crotch injury in 2008 and a frustrating 2009 season reduced by the England visit implied he never truly jump started like he was required to, during his stretch with the Kolkata establishment.
Gayle, in any case, presented appropriate reparations once he joined the Royal Challenges Bangalore in 2011, releasing his touchy scope of strokes that made him seemingly the most dreaded T20 batsman on the planet. The experience against Pune Warriors in 2013, for example, seen vintage Gayle as he crushed each conceivable record on his way to a stunning 175 not out.
Such has been the strength of this player, who strikingly has hundreds of years in all arrangements of the game, that RCB have been found to depend vigorously on him all through the last scarcely any seasons. Averaging 46.79 while keeping up a strike-pace of 153.78 is serious stuff, particularly when the person gloats of 4 centuries and 18 fifties in 74 IPL innings.

It stretches alongside the Burmese/Indian border in the top Chindwin River vicinity into regions of the Kachin State to the east and inside the northernmost a part of Chin State. Accordingly, the significant majority of Naga people are dwelling in the Indian a part of Nagaland, that is greater densely populated than the Burmese a part of Nagaland. With recognize to the whole length of the Burmese a part of Nagaland no information were available to me.
The general number of all Naga human beings (Nagaland India and Nagaland Burma collectively) is not exactly recognized. The general populace of Nagaland in India is understood to be about 2 million (how many of them are tribal human beings I can't say) but the wide variety of Naga human beings making their domestic in Burma (the japanese Naga, 4 important tribes and 49 clans) isn't always recognized. Figures between 70.000 and 500.000 are in movement however consistent with my research the variety of Naga in Burma is maximum probably somewhere among a hundred and fifty.000 and 2 hundred.000.
The 5 largest towns, villages or townships in Burma's Nagaland are Khamti, Lahe, Layshi (Lashee), Nanywun and Htamanthi. The first place to arrive whilst coming to Nagaland is Khamti. From there it's far viable to maintain to the other locations.
With appreciate to the early records of Nagaland and the starting place of the Naga not a good deal is understood. It isn't always clear whether they have got a not unusual or numerous ethnic historical past. Since the people of Asia, specially of South-East Asia, are a whole lot extra numerous than the ones of different continents it is tough to discover. Depending at the sources in Burma tapped one hears approximately Karen connections, Chin members of the family and/or Tibeto-Burman (Mongolian line) beginning. Personally, I favour the latter.
Getting to and into the Burmese part of Nagaland calls for first of all a right permission issued by means of the relevant government, secondly an experienced neighborhood manual and thirdly to be pretty adventuresome; it is tough visiting and not anything in the way of extremely good consolation is to be predicted, no longer to mention luxury.
Although certain things of contemporary lifestyles inclusive of plastic luggage, plastic robs and ribbons, recorded song and agree with it or not films or even karaoke have already discovered their way into a few places of the not so easily reachable Nagaland the Naga people are certainly one in all this earth's maximum-untouched-by using-current-life-individuals who nonetheless grasp firmly to their old traditions. Since they seem to be happy with their manner of existence this is a good aspect. But as a good deal as it is suitable that the vintage customs and manners in addition to ideals are stored alive and practised there are truly limits to what one thinks worthy of upkeep. And so it is comforting to recognise that e.G. The culture of head-looking - which as I am sure became the principle reason for the Naga's no longer being the various 'top-ten' of those tribes that many humans were inquisitive about getting closer familiar with - changed into abandoned not goodbye ago and is in present-day Nagaland now not practised anymore.
Although outlawed underneath British rule inside the Nineties, headhunting changed into still practised by means of the Nagas at the least till well into the 1940s. Headhunting become critical for the Nagas because they believed that the possession of a killed character's (enemy's) head, which they thought is the vicinity where the 'mio' (soul) is placed would result in the transference of the respective (unfortunate) character's strengths and courage to the victorious warrior what could increase wealth and fertility of the only having taken the head. Also, having taken heads did appreciably enhance the popularity of a warrior.
By the via, the Naga tribes played a position no longer to be underestimated in importance all through WWII. More exactly phrased inside the context of the liberation of Burma from the Japanese militia by using the British with support of American and Chinese forces. As General (later Field-Marshal) William J. Slim in his e-book 'Turning Defeat into Victory' observes: "... Energetic aid of the local tribesmen. These had been the gallant Nagas whose loyalty, even in the most depressing instances of the invasion had by no means faltered. Despite flogging, torture, execution and the burning of their villages, they refused to useful resource the Japanese in any way or to betray our troops. Their active assist to as became beyond fee or reward... They guided our columns, amassed records, ambushed enemy patrols, carried our supplies, and taken in our wounded beneath the heaviest fire - and then, being the gentlemen they were, frequently refused all payment. Many a British and Indian soldier owes his lifestyles to the bare, head-hunting Naga, and no soldier of the Fourteenth Army who met them will ever think of them but with admiration and affection."
But the Naga human beings aren't best nicely versed inside the artwork of jungle warfare. They are also widely recognized for their prowess in crafts broadly speaking woodcarving, fabric and basket weaving and to a few exceptional extent metallurgy and metalwork. These arts have advanced from doing matters out of necessity in preference to the intention to supply something beautiful. Let us take, as an instance, the stunning blankets and shawls the Naga's are weaving and wearing. They are an crucial item of apparel mainly at some stage in very bloodless (although seldom freezing) winters inside the mountain regions. Both, girl and male alike use those blankets as a body wrap or material. However, the designs of male blankets range from the ones of female blankets.
The designs also vary from tribe to tribe and sub-tribe to sub-tribe as they imply tribal affiliation. The Naga price those body cloths notably and they may be surpassed down from generation to technology for which motive quite a few of the proudly worn blankets are valuable heirlooms. The cloth these blankets are made from is wool. The basic color-sets are broadly speaking red and black, orange and black, crimson and blue, pink and inexperienced in addition to white, pink and black. The colorings used are very bright, bright and bold. The design factors are predominantly geometric pattern including crosses, squares and stripes. The blankets do occasionally have a band depicting animals (often painted) going for walks from one side to the opposite through the blanket's centre. Materials used to embellish the blankets are small glossy and brightly coloured cowrie shells organized in circles and/or double circles, lines and stick figures and artfully stitched unto the blankets.
The cowrie (cypraeidae) is a marine mollusc with a easy, domed shell with an extended, slim and toothed opening. The name is derived from the Hindu name 'Kauri'. The cowrie mussel is common to tropical waters and specially the yellow-white colored cowrie shell (cypraea moneta) of the so-known as 'money-cowrie' turned into previously among others in Asia substantially used as foreign money. But even better prized than the cowrie shell is some of the Naga the bigger conch shell.
The conch (circle of relatives strombidae) is a marine mollusc. The call is carried out to many species of marine snails. The authentic conch has a robust spiral shell with overlapping whorls, which may additionally endure long, claw-like projections and a flared lip. Parts of the conch shell are used as jewelry (worn by way of males and females alike), necklace clasps or are used to make a headdress. As for woodcarving, the Naga humans carve the whole lot from bowls and pipes to plates, ladles, caskets, and so forth. And are famous for sculpturing respected people which includes deceased family participants and warriors. The statues are clothed in conventional attire and decorated with Naga headdresses and brightly colored beaded necklaces. Among collectors these wood Naga sculptures are already very excessive prized objects. The Naga follow their big woodcarving competencies also in terms of the ornament of totems. Totems and totem poles play an important role inside the Naga lifestyle simply as it is within the cultures of e.G. North American tribes of crimson Indians. Naga humans have a good time plenty of gala's but 2 of the foremost gala's are the Hornbill Festival inside the first week of December and Kaing Bi the Naga Lunar New Year in January.
Let me now tell you a bit about Kaing Bi, the Naga New Year. The Naga New Year is, simply as all the other Naga festivals, a drawn-out, completely happy circle of relatives affair and no one whether or not antique or young, man or woman, boy or lady is ignored; even infants are carried 'papoose fashion' at the backs or hips in their mother and father or other older family contributors. The Naga New Year pageant right is on January 14th and fifteenth the previous being the day of the outlet rite the latter being the professional New Years Day and the day of the grand final. But the celebrating of the Naga New Year isn't restricted to these days.
The party clearly starts about one week before whilst the tribal humans attending and/or actively taking part inside the birthday party of the Kaing Bi competition have 'practice session ceremonies' in their villages previous to their leaving for the township where the respective Naga New Year pageant takes region
The pageant venue is selected yearly by using the Naga Festival Committee 'assisted' by way of the government 'extending a beneficial hand'. The area in which the celebrations are to take vicinity is chosen among Khamti, Lahe, Layshi (Lashee), and Nanywun and something problems there is probably among the numerous Naga sub-tribe cultures, one of the traditions that every one of them proportion is the joint birthday celebration of the Naga New Year festival. Subsequently, all tribes do irrespective of whether their domestic is in the Indian or Burmese a part of Nagaland and regardless of how a long way their village may be from the pageant location, meet within the days earlier than the Naga New Year which will put together and rejoice this pageant together. Nothing can prevent them and lots of them have a long and tiresome journey thru dense jungle and over steep mountain paths before them. Their adventure is made even more hard as they do not handiest must carry themselves and their toddlers but also the whole thing they need from bedding to food, cooking utensils, to garments, adornments and what-have-you.
Finally, all of them make it to the festival city or village and in case you think they arrive exhausted and wiped out after their days-long march uphill and downhill thru the jungle and dense forests you're useless incorrect. They make their arrival a tremendous show and a most mind-blowing entry. In the best of spirits and not displaying any signal of fatigue they proudly and energetically present themselves inside the first-rate light possible; and of route both men and women are dressed in their very first-rate, traditional pageant finery along with a colorful costume (regularly with cowrie decoration) and as for the guys a really astonishing head tools.

Top Restaurants in Jayanagar 4th Block | Bangalore
Top Restaurants in Jayanagar 4th Block | Bangalore
Give yourself a break from all that shopping and try out these great food joints in Jayanagar 4th block, Bangalore.
Jayanagar is one of Bangalore’s oldest and most affluent neighbourhoods. With its wide roads, well planned residential and commercial areas, Jayanagar is a popular hub for families and students. Jayanagar 4th block has long been hailed as one of the busiest shopping areas of Bangalore. And where there are shops, there have to be some pretty great restaurants to give shoppers a place to rest and grab a bite to eat.
While Jayanagar 4th block is known for being a vegetarian’s paradise, there have been plenty of non vegetarian options also open up. From casual snacking joints to fine dining restaurants, there are plenty of different kinds of eateries that you can check out here. We sent out our scouts to find the best restaurants in Jayanagar 4th block, Bangalore. Read on to find out which ones they are and why they are so awesome!
Try Naati Style Cuisine at New Prashanth Hotels
Taaza Thindi
Taaza Thindi translates to fresh snacks. And they don’t get fresher than what they serve right here! This restaurant is nestled in a 4 lane street at Jayanagar, making it easy to walk to after a relaxing morning stroll.
The food ordering system follows a coupon system, which is surprisingly well managed. You will find a long line of people waiting to purchase a coupon, but the line moves along quickly so that you are seated at a table in no time. The best meals to order here are the dosa’s, idli’s, and khara bath. Once you have your coupons ready you can collect the food from respectiv counters.
The management should be lauded for maintaining an extremely hygienic restaurant. The prices are also perfect, with a small complete meal costing no more than Rs 60.
The food here is divine. Even though the menu options are limited, it is clear to see that a lot of care and quality has gone into making sure each of the items are the best. The dosa’s are crispy and perfect, laden with butter making them absolutely delicious to savour. The idli’s are soft and heavenly, melting in your mouth and are paired with the perfect chutney. The vada’s are also a must-try as they are crisp and fresh, just the way God intended! While all the other items on the menu are also wonderful to taste, their filter coffee goes well with each and every item.
Try out Taaza Thindi for a satisfying Sunday breakfast.
New Prashanth Hotels – Jayanagar 4th Block
If you are in Jayanagar 4th block for the afternoon, you should try out a naati style restaurant. These restaurants are ubiquitous in Bangalore and are well known for serving authentic Karnataka style cuisine. Naati style is a form of Karnataka local cuisine, which makes the use of fresh ingredients prepared from scratch.
New Prashanth Hotel's naati style restaurant has several outlets across Bangalore. The low cost food makes it an attractive find, with a meal for two costing as low as Rs. 500. The food here is really good, which is why this restaurant is so popular among patrons.
If you like the wild side of Indian cooking, you must try the boti fry here. Boti fry is a spicy mutton dish that is packed with spices and flavours that make it delectable to patrons. Visit this place a couple of times so that you can taste every item on the menu - you certainly wouldn’t regret it.
Enjoy the spicy fare and get here early on weekdays to avoid the crowd!
Meghana Foods
Ask anyone where they can find the best biryani in town and they are bound to name Meghana Foods in their top ten list. It has long been popular for having the best Hyderabad / Andhra style biryani in town and even though these are priced on the higher side, people do not mind shelling out for the amazing flavour.
Meghana Foods have several branches all over Bangalore, and Jayanagar is one of them. The 4th block branch is always crowded, as are all the other branches in Bangalore. Expect a 10 - 15 minute wait for a seat at this restaurant. The ambience is pleasant enough with mood lighting and chandeliers. There are sofa style seats available as well as individual chairs at the tables here.
The best item on the menu is undeniably the boneless chicken biryani. All the biryanis are made with the finest basmati rice so that the rice is as flavourful as the meat. The flavour packed biryani is filled with boneless chicken chunks that are layered on the top as well as throughout the dish. The Meghana special biryani is also a must-try with yellow gravy and an absolutely delicious taste. Even the vegetarian options taste great here.
The Meghana chicken 555 is also a popular dish here. Try this the next time you want to treat yourself to a sumptuous biryani dinner!
Halli Jonne Biryani
While we are on the subject of biryanis, we highly recommend Halli Jonne Biryani which is also based in Jayanagar 4th block. This is ideal for anyone who has always wanted to try this local authentic biryani style and is very popular with the local residents.
The restaurant is a self service style restaurant so do not expect much by way of service or ambience. The place tends to get crowded, so it is advisable to get here early if you want to grab a seat.
Jonne biryani is supposed to be the older name for donne biryani. Like the other biryani, it is served in a leaf bowl and is prepared with jeera samba rice. Be warned that jonne biryani has an authentic flavour that is not as masala-filled as the other biryanis available in the city. The flavour is comparably milder but it is a great distinct, taste. You can try out the mutton as well as chicken dishes here. The naati chicken gravy is also perfectly prepared.
The dishes are served in a simple, authentic way that just adds to the charm of this restaurant. We highly recommend that you head here for lunch when you are in the mood to try one of the vintage flavours of the city.
Davangere Benne Dosa Hotel
The Davangere benne dosa is the most sought after type of dosa in Bangalore. It’s common enough to find people who are constantly on the lookout for the perfect buttered up dosa in Bangalore. These joints are mostly tiny, seat few patrons but have piping hot dosas that are served with loads of butter.
The Davangere Benne Dose Hotel in Jayanagar 4th block was opened relatively recently but is highly popular with people who come to Jayanagar. This is the ideal place to come by when you want an instant meal that is delicious and freshly prepared. There are different types of dosa along with the traditional benne dosa. We highly recommend the open dosa. This is also served with butter but there is also podi that is sprinkled on it to make it just the right amount of crunchy and spicy.
Other types of dosas available here are the onion dosa, set dosa, and a lot more on the list. They also serve soft and fluffy idli here. At lunchtime, you can expect to enjoy meals here with rice, sambar and buttermilk. In the evening you can enjoy the paddus, which take a little longer to make and serve but are totally worth it anyway.
This place is small but definitely worth a try, especially to sample the famous benne dosa.
Shree Venkateshwara North Karnataka Hotel
North Karnataka food hardly finds a place on the typical Bangalorean’s menu simply because of all the other food options out there. If you haven’t tried out North Karnataka cuisine yet, you are missing out! With akki roti and holige, and many more delicacies on offer, you need to head to Shree Venkateshwara North Karnataka Hotel in Jayanagar.
The top dishes that Shree Venkateshwara North Karnataka Hotel serves are jowar roti, saag and various delicious vegetable dishes. You can have a rich sampling of all their dishes with a tall glass of majige, which is the Karnataka style of spiced buttermilk. It’s just what your tummy needs on a hot day!
The best part about Shree Venkateshwara is that it is priced quite reasonably. You can enjoy a full meal here for two people that would not cost more than Rs 200. The ambience is simple and the restaurant is very hygienic. It is very popular and gets crowded so you will need to wait to be seated. The food is spicy but excellent, especially if you want to get the flavour of North Karnataka without travelling there.
Try out Shree Venkateshwara for the finest North Karnataka food for your lunch or dinner out.
Maiyas
A list of restaurants in Jayanagar 4th block would be incomplete without a mention of this iconic food brand. Maiyas is famous in Bangalore for its vegetarian delights that are a pleasant mix of South Indian food and modern pastries.
Maiyas has long been hailed as the go-to place for delicious dosa’s and Mangalore bondas. You can expect all the offerings on the menu to be prepared fresh and tasty, living up to the iconic Maiyas brand. Thanks to its popularity, the place is always packed with food lovers, so you will need to come in with plenty of time at disposal, so you can patiently wait for a table. The crispy dosa’s and delicious Kesari bath are prepared in the typical South Indian style making them unbeatable. The special meals section is also a great place to try the thali menus.
The prices here are also unbeatable. A typical meal for two costs less than Rs 200, making it a very reasonable affair. The restaurant is self service, mostly, and serving of food is done in batches once everyone is seated. You feel like you are part of the old Bangalore again.
Try out Maiyas to try out a legendary restaurant in Bangalore that has long been a favourite of residents.
Chutney Chang
For those who love long buffets, or just want to organise the perfect team outings, Chutney Chang in Jayanagar is just the place to visit. It is touted to have the largest buffet spread in Bangalore, numbering over 80 different dishes.
If you don’t believe us, just walk into the Chutney Chang at the Cosmopolitan Club in Jayanagar. The cuisine here is Indo-Chinese, which is basically the kind of cuisine that all Indians love, right? There is a perfect mix of Indian dishes as well as Chinese dishes in vegetarian as well as non vegetarian. There are North Indian dishes as well as live kebab counters with chicken, mutton and seafood. On the Chinese side, the live counters prepare momos, grills and there is also a chaat counter.
What’s great is that after all that gorging on the many buffet options for the main course, you also have an extensive dessert dishes to choose from. #660 Classic Virat, Vintage MSD and ‘Back in form’ Bhuvi help India in leveling series against Australia; Shaun Marsh brilliant century went in vain; Djokovic, Serena and Zverev breeze through to 2nd round in Australian open; Jesus helps Man City thump Wolves; Karnataka dismiss Rajasthan in Ranji QF for 224 to take control; UP, Gujarat and Uttarkhand shine in other QF matches and more...:-)
In 2nd day of Australian open, Madison Keys started off and won easily in straight sets. Serena Williams, Zverve, Pliskova, Coric, Fognini, Shapovalov and Muguruza all cruised in straight sets. Nishikori found himself 2 sets down against Majchrzak. Majchrzak didn’t have gas left and retired in final set. Ve nus Williams won in 3 set thriller. Wawrinka was set down against Gulbis but Gulbis retired in 2nd set allowing former champion to breathe easily. Tsonga and Simon won in straight sets too. Djokovic was broken in 3rd game of the set but was the only smiling moment for Kruger as Serbian legend won in straight sets. He lost just 6 games in all. He would face Tsonga in 2nd round which should test him. Raonic beat Kyrgios in straight sets which was a surprise. Halep was a set down before he bounced back to win 3 sets. She had lost in first round in US open. But this win could give her confidence.
In 2nd ODI, Australia won the toss again and chose to bat. India just made one change. They dropped Khaleel and included Siraj. Bhuvaneshwar was in his zone today and bowled beautiful line and length. Shami complimented him. Bhuvi castled Finch again. Shami dismissed Carey soon after. Australia 26-2. Khawaja and Marsh then started scoring freely. Boundaries came regularly and they scored quite a few quick singles. They completed 50 run stand inside 10 overs. Just when it looked like they would accelerate, Jadeja ran Khawaja out with a brilliant direct hit. Australia 82-3. Handscomb and Marsh then had another 50 plus stand before Jadeja stumped him. Australia 134-4. India could have put pressure on Australia at this point by grabbing another quick wicket. They instead allowed Stoinis and Marsh to settle by giving Siraj and Jadeja extended spell. Bhuvi or SHami should have come on at this stage. They had another 50 stand before Shami dismissed Stoinis. Australia 189-5 in 37th over. Maxwell came and started timing the ball well from the word go. Marsh in the meanwhile scored his 7th century and 4th in last 8 games. That’s staggering stats. He and Maxwell upped the ante. They brought up fifty stand in under 7 overs. Siraj could have dismissed Maxwell. Umpire ruled LBW decision out but Maxwell revived. Ball was missing the leg. Couple of overs later, Rohit dropped Maxwell though catch was tough. Kuldeep went for 66 runs in 10 overs which is costliest wicketless spell in ODIs. Siraj gave 10 runs more in his spell. Australia were placed at 283-5 with 15 balls more to go. They looked good for 310 or even 320. Bhvi though picked Maxwell and Marsh in space of 3 balls to give India a breather. Bhuvi had 4- fer. A six and a four in last 2 of 3 balls by Lyon gave Australia a score of 298. India pulled well but stil was a daunting task to win this. India needed good start and got one. Dhawan got into his zone early. He creamed 5 beautiful boundaries. Just when it looked like Indian openers would have another 50 plus stand, Behrendorff dismissed Dhawan. India 47-1. Dhawan literally threw it away. He looked really good today. Rohit and Kohli took India ahead with 50 plus stand. Rohit hit a couple of delightful sixes before being dismissed by Stoinis. Rohit also threw it away. He looked a bit tired as well. First match score probably took its toll. India 101-2. Rayadu survived a couple of close calls early on. He pulled a short ball which fell in no man’s land. Next ball, ball fell short of point by an inch. This would be real test for Rayadu. He is Kohli’s pick for number 4. He needs to prove in chasing big scores. This was a great chance. He mishit ball to no man’s land on atleast 5 occasions before Maxwell dismissed him for 24. He had 59 stand with Kohli but he should have taken less risk. It was a poor innings from a promising batsmen. Dhoni joined Kohli. He took his time in first ODI but looked good in last 20 runs before unluckily getting out. He was timing the ball better this time. Kohli took the attack from here on. He made bulk of the runs. He hit fours, ran singles and twos like a hare. He brought up his 39th ODI century in style. This was his 5th Australia and 3rd against Australia in Australia. Both his previous centuries vs Australia in Australia were in losing causes. Post drinks break with 7 overs to go, India needed 61 runs.. Against the run of play Kohli was dismissed by Richardson for 104. It was a tired looking shot. Dinesh Karthik joined Dhoni. DK loves such kind of situations as he a star T20 player. He and Dhoni took India home with great running. They scored 57 runs with just 2 fours and 1 six. Rest were all through brilliant placement. With 7 runs needed from 6 balls, Dhoni hit a six in typical style which even brought up his 50. Dhoni of the OLD is back. He doesn’t look that powerful but still has the game. India needed this innings from Dhoni ahead of the world cup. Dinesh Karthik has extended his ODI career with 14 ball 25 as well.
In Ranji QF, Karnataka reduced Rajasthan to 135-6 before later bounced back with 85 run stand. Gowtham an Mithun bowled brilliantly to dismiss Rajasthan for 224. Karnataka ended day at 12-0 . In other matches, Vidarbha reduced Uttarkhand to 44-3 before Uttarkhand bounce back to end day 1 at 293-6. Avneesh topped with 91. In 3rd QF, Kerla were dismissed by Gujarat for 185. Gujarat ended day at 97-4. RK Singh’s brilliant 150 rescued UP from 54-4 to end day 1 at 340-7.
In EPL, Man City thrashed Wolves 3-0 as Jesus scored 2 brilliant goals. Wolves just had 23% possession of the ball which shows how dominant City have been.

Meet the Artisan
Welcome to our exciting new addition to Loop the Loop. We really admire and love being inspired by amazing artists and makers, so we've decided to create a space to showcase our favorite artisans, to give you an insight into how they got started and what they do. It'll be a great insight, and we hope you enjoy their stories and get to discover fabulous new products and crafts.
Mary Maddocks - Textile Artist
Our first interviewee is the lovely Mary Maddocks, a lifestyle blogger and textile artist from South East London. Mary's textile art combines a passion for woven crafts with a lifelong love of the natural world. Her inspiring Instagram feed captures her love of the great outdoors, interiors and crafts. Like ourselves, Mary loves spending time in rural landscapes, and in particular, West Wales which really influences her woven wall hangings.
To view her collection of beautiful woven pieces and to keep up-to-date with her weaving workshops visit www.marymaddocks.com
Tell us who you are and what you do
I’m a textile artist and lifestyle blogger living in South East London. I create woven wall hangings and jewellery inspired by the natural world. I also teach weaving workshops for people who want to learn how to weave on a frame loom.
How did you get started?
I first learned to weave in school when one of my teachers brought in her table loom and taught me to use it. I loved learning to weave but sadly after finishing school I sort of forgot about it and it was only a few years later that I started to weave again. I have always loved craft and textiles in particular, but during my early twenties I trained and worked as a lawyer and so had very little time for it. Then about two years ago I bought a wooden frame loom and started experimenting with a stash of vintage wools that I had collected over the years. I began making woven wall hangings and woven necklaces and was soon completely hooked! My love of weaving has grown and grown, and I am now selling my weavings and running weaving workshops to teach others to weave.
What inspires you?
I am constantly inspired by the natural world, and much of my weaving is informed by natural landscapes, colours and textures. I am particularly drawn to the scenery of the Pembrokeshire coastline, the mountains and beaches of the Scottish Highlands and the sun-bleached, dusty landscapes of the Greek islands, where I often go on holiday. My travels often inspire my weavings - for example, I am currently drawn to the stark, black basalt sand beaches of Southern Iceland where I spent time last year. The intricate shapes and textures of natural objects such as driftwood, shells, pebbles and tree bark often work themselves into my art - I am continually fascinated by the complexity and beauty of nature and I want my weaving to reflect this. I always carry a camera with me so that I can snap interesting things I see, in case I want to use it for a weaving later.
How would you describe your style?
Eclectic and maximalist I suppose! Our home is full of vintage and second-hand furniture, ethnic and natural fabrics and materials, collected treasures and lots and lots of plants! I don’t really have a scheme – I just go with what I like and somehow it works!
What does your usual day involve?
My alarm goes off at 7 am and I have my first cup of tea in bed while listening to the news on the radio (and checking Instagram and my emails). I usually try to be at my desk by about 9am and then I spend a couple of hours replying to emails, planning and drafting blog posts and getting on top of other admin like planning and preparing for upcoming workshops. If I’m styling or shooting products for a blog post, I usually do this in the morning instead, as the light tends to be better earlier in the day. After lunch I sometimes go for a walk in the park round the corner to stretch my legs and get a bit of fresh air, following which I might spend some time in my shed weaving with radio 4 and a cat for company, or I’ll use the time to finish what I was doing in the morning. My husband usually gets home at around 7pm and we’ll have dinner together. I usually weave for a bit after dinner in front of the TV and I’ll be in bed by 11.30.
What are the best bits about your job?
The best bit by far is having the freedom to use my time as I wish, to set my own agenda and to determine the next steps that I want my business to take. That’s probably also the most difficult part of my job too! It’s a wonderful feeling when something you have created all by yourself is successful, and when you take a risk that pays off. I am a very domestic soul at heart so I love working from home and feel very lucky that I no longer have to tackle a London commute. Finally, I really enjoy passing on the skills that I have learnt to others, and watching them become as fascinated with weaving as I am!
What would be your advice to someone starting out?
If something interests you or you have a passion for something, absorb yourself in it as much as you can. Read about it, experiment with it, research and hone your skills as much as you possible can in your spare time. Don’t assume that you can’t do something because you haven’t been formally taught or trained – so many skills can be acquired through hard work and self-learning. Observe what others in your field are doing, but resist the urge to compare yourself – have confidence in your own style and method. If you get to the point when you don’t want to do anything else (like I did), analyse your finances carefully, and if you can manage it, take the leap. I was always more scared of not giving my own business a go than trying and failing – after all, life is short!
What can’t you live without?
Truthfully, my iphone. I dropped it down the loo last weekend and had to dry it out in a bowl of rice for two days. I felt like I had lost one of my limbs. (Oh and my husband of course – he’s quite useful).
Describe your perfect weekend.
A perfect weekend would involve waking up late and eating a leisurely breakfast of smashed avocado and eggs on toast, fresh croissants and banana smoothies accompanied by a bit of Leonard Cohen. We’d then head out of London in our campervan for a walk and a picnic, followed by a hot bath, an Indian takeaway and a film. Rock and roll.
What is your most cherished possession?
My Ruth Tomlinson engagement ring – it’s the most beautiful thing I own and it never fails to make me smile whenever I catch a glimpse of it.
What are your dreams for this year?
We’re expecting our first baby in July, so my dreams are mainly baby-shaped at the moment! I can’t wait to become a mum and also to continue growing and developing my business. I want to carry on holding workshops, selling my weaving guides and kits, possibly developing a weaving e-guide, and creating a woven jewellery collection. How I’m going to fit all that in around a small person I’m not entirely sure, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.

Implementing Minimalism!
I have done so much since the last post!! My new thing is decluttering. I am trying to downsize by 80-90%, which is actually a TON of work. Going through and trashing everything /sounds/ easy, but it's actually really physically exhausting. I think I'm finally building up my back muscles though! 💪 So... a list of things I am working on/ have done: 1. I finally read the book about the "konmari method" of decluttering and found it pretty inspiring! I've actually pretty much followed those rules without meaning to (no wonder people kept recommending that book to me!), but in the past, I'd just chuck things if I didn't use them, joy-bringing or not, which made me sad until I forgot about it. Now, it's about bringing joy into my life in everything I own. For example, I found a vintage muffin pan at a used bookstore today. Looking at it just makes me smile! Now, I'm free to get rid of my nasty old ones and the bad memories of the giver with them. :) 2. I am working on minimizing my spice collection. I already downsized, but holy Jesus I do not need to have a basket overflowing with spices. I cook for TWO-- really, ONE now with Damion off trucking, not 12. I was having trouble picking the ones I would keep, so I picked an arbitrary number of spices I would allow myself. So, I picked 10, not including salt/pepper. Then, I asked Damion to choose the 10... because I got all, "ohhh!! Curry!! I love Indian food!! Remember that one time I had... " etc, so I was just unable to make a rational decision. He picked: *garlic salt *lemon pepper *parsley *basil *oregano *nutmeg *paprika *cinnamon *cloves *ginger I felt that this list was pretty comprehensive, so I went out and bought little magnetic tins for those suckers ($3 a piece!!) so that in the tiny house I can stick them on a strip or the fridge. For now, they will live in the junk drawer (once I eliminate it:)). 3. I started a secret garden:3 but, what's new about my gardening philosophy is that I'm only growing the stuff I'll actually use (other than my flowers:>). Most of my space is in part shade, so I'm mostly doing herbs: basil, parsley... Basically, my goal is to get everything on the herb list above growing! I also got mint and chamomile cause I love those teas. 😍 I did run into a problem here though: while in the herb section, I found rosemary and cilantro. :/ I started remembering how delicious they are, and how we do use them frequently. Then, I saw lavender, which is my herb weakness. It just smells soooo good, and the flowers are so pretty! I don't use it though, which makes it a "clutter" purchase... and that freaked me out so bad, I put back my rosemary and cilantro too and left that area immediately! They are mentally "on hold" until I have decided what to do. I know I probably won't get the lavender (until I can find a legit reason to justify it), but idk if I'll add the two useful herbs to my 10 (making 12 total) or if I'll cut off paprika and some other spice. But, chiliiiii!! And, damion didn't even list chilli pepper already! I really suck at minimizing spices, obviously. The $3/ magnetic spice tin cost does help motivate me a little, though. :) 4. I have started downsizing, so my house is easier to clean. Above all, I am a lazy person. Less dishes = less doing dishes, so I tossed them all and am now using two each of my inheritance plates, bowls and serving bowls (also used as mixing bowls). I think of my wonderful grandma, RIP, each time I see them now, and so eating gives me the feels 💖 I think about her almost every day now and it makes me happy. :> I downgraded Damion's and my clothing (Damion participated via Skype). I already had downsized into about... 3/4 large drawers with no hanging items, but they were crammed in. I thought I was done, but then I had a thought: "Katrina. You are lazy. It's going to suck when you inevitably put off your laundry and have to do it all at once!" ... So, I posted a question in the minimalist group I'm a part of and decided on 3/4 loads of laundry total. That's the most laundry in a row I am willing to do, including sheets and pillowcases, towels and washcloths. So, I got rid of everything else. :> I went through my clothes konmari style and eliminated, motivated by easier cleaning. Dammit, I want to be the type of person who washes their sheets every week! So, I got rid of stuff, separating it into selling (via consignment), donate and trash piles. I downsized to a roughly 2 week supply of stuff. Together, including linens, I only have 3.5 loads of laundry:D! Perfect for lazy Katrina, especially with my mother in law's awesome fancy big wash machine;) I now have: Linens: *8 washcloths, for face washing and exfoliation. *1 microfiber cloth, in danger of being tossed, because I HATE the texture of microfiber but appreciate its usefulness *3 towels: 1 hugeeee, and the two softest towels *1 set of fitted/flat sheets, because I won't wash them if I have more than one. *8 pillowcases: 4 normal, gray everyday pillowcases and 2 normal blue ones, for if I had a guest, idk. Plus 2 purty ones. What can I say? They bring me joy. Typing this though, maybe I should downsize more though, 8 is a bit excessive for 2 people with 4 pillows 😂 Clothing: I'll have to post about later, because my method is so involved. But, basically, everything I have matches everything else. It's all color theory and flattering fits. I plan to have excessive amounts of undies, though, because I like to change them a lot :> But, I'm only keeping 4 bras. 1 t-shirt bra, 1 convertible fancy schmancy bra, 1 sessy sessy bra ;D and 1 sports bra comfy bra thing. I love bras, but I always default to two or three anyway. My "color scheme" thing for my undies (ONLY undies, my outside clothes have a much more defined pallet) is that my bras are pretty plain/neutral, but I can get whatever panties in whatever color I want. :3 So, I am still free to indulge my love of undies and still have order :3 Last thing on implementing minimalism: I am in progress of minimizing my cleaning supply collection. I realllllly want to be earth friendly, but my cleaning stuff does not reflect that. It's all super harsh chemicals, because in the past, I was messy. I AM messy, but now my house is halfway optimized for cleaning, so it's a LOT easier for messy Katrina to keep my (her? Lol) house not clean, but within-30-minutes-of-non-rushed-cleaning clean. :D Anyways, before I had to have the harsh stuff because when I cleaned, I REALLY felt that bleach/ harsh chemicals were necessary in order to make up for the month and a half of no cleaning (wish I were joking 😂). Now that my house is easier to clean, I don't need those crazy chemicals. Except bleach, because after all, I do own chickens. I'm looking into doing my own cleaning supplies mostly: nothing crazy or complicated (I still have to cater toward lazy Katrina), but just things like vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda... etc. I still have to come up with eco friendly replacements for two things though: disinfectant wipes and the toilet wand... thingy. For the disinfectant wipes, I know that I could make my own, but it does make more laundry, and more laundry lowers the success rate of keeping my house clean. Plus, how would I keep the rags secured in sanitizing fluid without it disintegrating the rags? Or does a regular, non-bleach formula not do that? No idea. Also, I'll need to figure out how many wipes I need for a two week period, which will be tough, because I don't clean every day consistently. The toilet wand solution is harder for me though, so input would be much appreciated. I CANNOT stand the normal toilet scrubber thingies. They just don't seem sanitary, even if you keep them in cleaning liquid. Plus, they just inspire me to use copious, embarrassing amounts of straight bleach in order to sanitize, which defeats the eco friendly purpose anyway. Anyway, I discovered those toilet wands about a year ago and I haven't gone back! The wands detach from the scrubby pad, and you toss the scrubby in the trash can (because the flushable wipes suck for hard cleaning), and that's IT. You keep the nice, clean wand and get another the next time. These are also really convenient (new xD) for scrubbing my bath tub, I have discovered recently. No ridiculous hand scrubber and bleach everywhere, just this presoaked scrubber that gets everything up. It doesn't even have a chance to hurt my back, it's so fast!! Obviously, though, this is hugely irresponsible for the earth, even if they are disgusting. :( I have come up with an idea to somehow get a reusable sponge attached to the end of one of those sticks, and dropping them immediately in some dirty cleaning items container (cause they would have to be separate from clothing/linens, other than possibly disinfectant wipes) so that they could later be sanitized. But, that sounds like a lot of work, and I already hate sponges. I threw mine away in favor of those ikea scrubbing brushes :> anyway, the only way I can think to impliment this idea is to use the scrubbing bubbles version of the wand (I have both already), which has a tong-like opening for its pads. But, I don't really care for that wand. The clorox one if much more ergonomic and very sturdy, which is critical for seldom-cleaning Katrina. Also, if I'm going to have to sanitize them anyway, doesn't that defeat the whole "earth friendly" purpose? Or, could I boil them, or would that ruin the material of both the disinfectant rags / scrubbers? And, the biggest question: would I actually do it? So, yeah, basically, I need a separable toilet cleaning brush, with an ergonomic handle and a sturdy brush-to-wand attachment, with a viable, super easy way of sanitizing the brush/scrubby bit, preferably something that could be done with the disinfectant wipes too at the same time. Is that too much to ask? XD I really would love to hear suggestions though. Anyway, that's basically where I'm at right now in minimizing. I'll leave you with something a Minimalism group member said to me, to address my regrets at filling the landfills with my unused junk: either way, the earth suffers. Keeping items you don't want/need in your house doesn't save them. The only solution is being mindful about what you buy and what you support to begin with. 🌎🌳💚 This quote has helped me tremendously, as I was pretty much unknowingly using my earth-friendly side to justify holding onto items that really needed to move on. And with that, ladies and gentlemen, thank you and good night! 😘

The Ultimate Southwest USA Road Trip Itinerary • The Blonde Abroad
Jen Tenzer is sharing her road trip itinerary for the Southwestern region of the USA!
The American Southwest is an absolutely stunning setting for a road trip and offers an unparalleled mix of gorgeous red rock views, national park hiking, mysticism, delicious (sometimes spicy!) food, and a rich culture steeped in Mexican and Native American history.
The dry heat makes it an ideal place to visit in the fall and spring months when you’re looking for a break from colder climates. Don’t forget, temperatures reach well over 100 degrees in the summer and the desert can still get snow in February!
This 2-week itinerary captures some of the best of the Southwest, including adventurous activities, nature walks, opportunities to unwind, foodie destinations, and cultural attractions.
The trip begins in Arizona, travels through New Mexico, and ends in Utah. You could easily travel this itinerary in the reverse direction and/or modify it to include more of Utah’s “Mighty 5” National Parks. There are some optional side trips in case you have more travel time!
Here’s the ultimate Southwest USA road trip itinerary!
Southwest Road Trip Highlights
Day 1: Arrive in Tuscon or Phoenix
Day 2-3: Sedona, Arizona
Day 4-5: The Grand Canyon
Day 6-8: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Day 9-12: Moab, Utah
Day 13-14: Salt Lake City, Utah
Day 1: Arrive in Tucson or Phoenix
This trip starts in either Tucson or Phoenix depending on convenience and uses either major city as more of a launchpad than a destination.
That being said, I’d highly recommend checking out Saguaro National Park just outside Tucson and/or hiking Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale.
Either city is a fantastic introduction to the scenery and overall laid back attitude of the Southwestern U.S.
Also, if you’re looking to add a bit of luxury to your road trip, both of these cities have gorgeous resorts where you can indulge! Start your trip with some spa time at Miraval Resort outside Tucson or at the Phoenician in Scottsdale; it’s the perfect way to begin a digital detox during your travels.
After you’ve melted into those well-deserved wind-in-your-hair vibes, drive the ~2 hours from Phoenix or ~3.5 hours from Tucson north to Sedona.
Sedona, Arizona
Day 2-3: Explore Sedona
Sedona is an adorable and mystical town set in the middle of the Arizona desert. It truly suits all appetites!
There are 200+ hiking trails surrounding the Sedona area. Slide Rock State Park is a great place for hiking that can also double as your camping spot; just make sure to reserve a campsite in advance.
Vortexes of Sedona
Some of the town’s most famous hiking trails, like Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock, travel through Sedona’s famed spiritual vortexes.
While I’m no expert on vortexes, they are believed to be specific locations on Earth where there is a swirling condensed center of spiritual energy. The Native Americans recognized the power of these places and often used them for sacred ceremonies.
Aside from hiking to them, you can experience Sedona’s vortexes through guided yoga and meditation classes out on the red rocks or from above in a sunrise hot air balloon ride. Even their local airport is an energy vortex you can visit!
What to Do + See in Downtown Sedona
Don’t forget to carve out some time to wander around the strip of downtown stores, which reflect this same woo-woo theme. Cute shops display gorgeous crystals in the windows and there are many spiritual healers available for service from psychic mediums to reiki healers.
I even had my aura read while in Sedona! (In case you’re curious, my aura is bright yellow and green with white light at the crown of my head.)
If the spirituality thing isn’t your jam, I’d highly recommend popping into a hidden gem called Blackbird Vintage, right off the main drag in Sedona. The shop owners have curated a high-quality collection of vintage Levi jeans, rock and roll tees, and other unique accessories.
Personally, I couldn’t resist a 1984 AC/DC tour t-shirt! (Check out their Etsy shop to see if anything new has come in, too!)
Where to Eat in Sedona
When you need to break away from the heat, a cold-pressed juice from Local Juicery is just what the doctor ordered. They also have a variety of colorful smoothies, salads, and bowls – all yummy!
I also recommend The Hudson, Mariposa’s Latin Grill, or Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen as dinner options.
Day 4-5: Explore the Grand Canyon
Where to Stay at the Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is about 2 hours north of Sedona. You have quite a few options on where to set up base camp for your canyon explorations.
Within the park, there are numerous camping options on the rim, as well as hotels run by the park—like The Grand Hotel and El Tovar. If you’re looking to stay down in the canyon, there are additional camping sites you can reserve as well as another park run lodging option called Phantom Ranch.
Just be mindful that any Grand Canyon National Park lodging options often book up roughly a year in advance!
If you don’t have that kind of advanced notice, there are plenty of hotel options located outside the park in Tusayan (~10 minutes drive), Williams (~1 hour) and Flagstaff (~1.5 hours). Tusayan is closest to the Grand Canyon, but is a very small town without many other attractions or restaurants.
Flagstaff is a larger college town with lots of restaurants, breweries, shops, and other activities (like seeing petroglyphs at nearby Walnut Canyon), but is a further drive from the park. Williams is a small historic town on old Route 66 that falls somewhere in the middle of these two in terms of size and distance.
What to Do at the Grand Canyon
You will likely want 2 full days to explore the Grand Canyon itself. Do not underestimate the difficulty of the hikes, particularly if you visit during warm months!
Because the canyon hikes are out-and-back, it’s sort of a reverse mountain; you end up with a hard, uphill battle after you’ve already burned through half the trail. For that reason, the rangers strongly discourage hiking from the rim to the river and back in a single day.
Plan on either hiking down to the river and staying somewhere in the canyon overnight or hiking only a portion of the trail and back up to the rim. There are various stop-off vistas with water sources and bathrooms that make for excellent turnaround points.
I loved hiking both the popular South Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Trails, but was very happy that I turned around after 2-3 miles to head back up to the rim!
If you have some extra time to kill before heading out of northern Arizona, definitely check out Havasu Falls, Antelope Canyon, and/or Monument Valley as additional side trips!
The crater is massive at 700 feet deep and 3/4 mile wide.
Day 6: Drive to Santa Fe
The drive from the Grand Canyon to Santa Fe is lengthy at about ~7 hours, so you should assume this drive eats up a full day of travel. That being said, there are plenty of stops along I-40 to make the most of it!
For starters, about an hour east of Flagstaff is Meteor Crater where you can see the impact remains of a meteor that crashed to earth 50,000 years ago. The crater is massive at 700 feet deep and ¾ mile wide.
It was used as a training site for the Apollo missions because of its similarity to the moon’s surface. Pretty neat and something you probably won’t see again given it’s in the middle of the desert!
Make a Pit Stop in Winslow, Arizona
Another fun touristy pit stop to fill up on gas and food is Winslow, Arizona. This small town was made famous from the 1972 Eagles’ hit “Take it Easy” with the lyrics:
“Now I’m a-standin’ on the corner in Winslow, Arizona With such a fine sight to see It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford Slowin’ down to have a look at me”
Across the street from your flatbed Ford photo op is Relic Road Brewing where you can pair a solid beer and burger before continuing along I-40.
Painted Desert + Petrified Forest
Lastly, spend a couple of hours checking out the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park where you can see ancient dinosaur-era crystallized logs and gradient-colored teepee mountains.
All of these stops remain en route to your next Southwestern destination!
Day 7-8: Explore Santa Fe
Welcome to New Mexico! From the moment you pull into Santa Fe and see its beautiful Pueblo-style architecture, you know you’ve reached somewhere special. The town is rich with Mexican and Native American culture.
An amazing way to start your day in Santa Fe is at the Sage Bakehouse where you can sample their delicious artisan bread loaves, pastries, sandwiches, and quiches with a giant cup of coffee. I absolutely loved their homemade peach preserves atop some crusty sourdough!
You could spend hours wandering the tiny streets and shops of Santa Fe picking up perfect gifts – I scored a truly unique Mexican blanket, local salsa, and a painted silk scarf which were all absolute hits with friends and family.
Santa Fe is also an art lover’s dream with several local galleries and museums, including the Museum of International Folk Art and the Georgia O’Keefe Museum.
Where to Eat + Drink in Santa Fe
After a long day of walking around, grab a cocktail and a seat with a view at The Bell Tower Bar, a rooftop bar inside La Fonda hotel near the main square.
Santa Fe’s delicious food scene carries through to dinner. I’d highly recommend La Choza Restaurant to try NM’s famed red and green chili tacos. If you’re in the mood for Indian food, Paper Dosa is outstanding – foodies truly can’t go wrong in this town.
Other popular spots include Modern General Feed and Seed, Paloma Restaurant, and The Pantry.
Newspaper Rock has one of the largest collections of prehistoric petroglyphs in the U.S.
Day 9: Drive to Moab
The drive from Santa Fe to Moab is another long day of road tripping at about 6 hours. You can help break up the drive by stopping at various ancient ruins along the way, such as the Pueblo settlements of Bandelier National Monument, the beautiful Puye Cliff Dwellings, and/or Mesa Verde National Park.
Closer to Moab, check out Newspaper Rock where you can see one of the largest collections of prehistoric petroglyphs in the U.S.
If you have some more time to extend this leg of the trip, consider adding on Great Sand Dunes National Park where you can sled down the sand dunes or the Four Corners Monument where you can place your feet in 4 states at the same time.
Day 10-12: Explore Moab
With a Mars-like red rock landscape, two national parks, and tons of adventurous off-roading activities, the town of Moab is a must.
Before heading out for the trails, you will definitely want to fuel up with a flat white or egg sandwich at Moab Garage Co.
I visited this cute café multiple times during my stay to try their salads, sandwiches, and their special Nitroccino (essentially, an espresso milkshake)!
You will want a full day to explore each of Arches and Canyonlands NP’s, but don’t forget to leave some extra time to explore the town and take in a Hummer or ATV tour!
This town is famous for its off-roading trails and you will see loads of ATV’s trolling down the main street alongside the cars.
I took an ATV excursion with High Point Hummer & ATV Tours and had the BEST time speeding around the bumpy terrain outside Canyonlands at the Merrimack and Monitor Buttes. Other super popular off-roading trails nearby include Hell’s Revenge and Fins & Things.
Where to Eat in Moab
An extremely popular (outdoor) lunch spot to check out is the Quesadilla Mobilla food truck where I devoured a cheesy spinach and sweet potato combination that I will never forget!
I’d also recommend Fiesta Mexicana, Miguel’s Baja Grill, Jailhouse Café, and the Moab Brewery (you’ll see their beers on sale throughout Utah)!
Where to Stay in Moab
There are plenty of different places to stay in and around Moab including Airbnb’s with desert vista backyards, camping in Dead Horse Point State Park, and hotels at various price points.
I loved the pool and restaurant at the Hilton’s Hoodoo Moab, but also enjoyed a couple of relaxing nights at an Airbnb just outside town – the stargazing is crystal clear!
Great Salt Lake Desert
Park City
Day 13-14: Explore Salt Lake City
This city has so much to offer! Depending on what time of year you visit, you can spend your days skiing in nearby Park City or dipping your toes into the cool waters of the Great Salt Lake.
The city is set alongside the mountains so you get the benefit of many hiking trails and nature activities plus a trendy and well-established food scene.
Ensign Peak Trail just north of Capitol Hill is a lovely way to get a lay of the land and see the entire city from above. I loved walking around the Sugar House neighborhood and enjoying al fresco beer flights at the Wasatch Brew Pub.
There is also scooter-sharing all over SLC and it’s a fun way to breeze through different neighborhoods!
Where to Eat in Salt Lake City
I did my fair share of dining in this town and would highly recommend The Rose Establishment for chrysanthemum lattes and sweet treats.
Head to Current Fish & Oyster for incredibly fresh and upscale seafood.
And don’t miss out on Crown Burger! This SLC fast-food spot is famous for its pastrami topped cheeseburgers…which are even more delicious than they sound!
And don’t forget the fry sauce – Utah has a longstanding obsession with this ketchup and mayo combo; you’ll see it on nearly all fried food menus!
Outside of Salt Lake City
A couple of must-do quick drives just outside the city include Antelope Island State Park where bison roam freely, as well as the Bonneville Salt Flats where you’ll feel like you’ve traveled all the way to Bolivia!
Access to these salt flats is free via a rest stop west on I-80. You can even drive on it! The Bonneville Speedway nearby holds numerous land speed records for 400+ mph on the salt surface.
Just make sure to give your car a thorough scrub afterward to scrape off the corrosive salt, as well as whatever other red dirt your car has collected on this ultimate Southwest itinerary!
And there you have it, folks! The ultimate Southwest USA road trip itinerary. Are there any hot spots you would add to this route?
