I love how Strike also does that when someone asks about Belkia name as a human, even if it's in a "They don't want to share" way
NO SAME also like i really loved the phrasing used there specifically which gave the impression Belkia himself was in Strike’s ear complaining about it lol.
“He doesn’t want to say” is such a cute way to put it because yeah sometimes your characters do just be refusing to tell you things and you gotta shrug your shoulders and go “idk man they’re not answering”
For Belkia in particular, though, i think I’m going to interpret that as Bel himself loving the name Tsubaki gave him so much he absolutely refuses to even consider anything else. That’s his dead name now, and he’s gonna make sure it STAYS dead. Like… It’s so. Sweet, I guess? How much effort he puts into killing the person he was before he met Tsubaki. He changed the way he talks, the way he looks, the way he approaches the world, everything about him is different now, and I love that. I love him.
I also love that Tsubaki’s OWN manner of speech shifted so drastically only in the last decade, because he met Belkia, and Bel had such an influence on him Tsubaki can’t help but learn to be a little more cheerful, too, a little more silly, and a lot less sullen.
Team M mean so much to me. Also god bless Tsubaki giving Shamrock a new name bc what do you MEAN he’s named GREGOR I’m in tears. For context, Gregor is the name of Kafka’s novel “the metamorphosis,” whose original German title is “Die Verwandlung” and isn’t just a character motif for Shamrock, but also the name of his specialty attack (vol 11, chapter 62, “I Will Strike Them from You”). Its subchant is The Nighthawk Star, but that isn’t really relevant right now.
Come to think of it, I never really delved into how The Metamorphosis is used for Shamrock’s character, and I think the difference in messages between The Metamorphosis and The Nighthawk Star are interesting enough in their differences it would be worth comparing and contrasting them in the context of both each other and his character. Taking notes taking notes…
This got off track as usual but. Yeah. Names are… Really important in Servamp, and you can figure out a lot about the characters not just from their names, but how the narrative treats their names, how they treat the names of other characters, but also how they themselves interact with their names. It’s a really interesting method of character exploration imo
Like, for instance, majority of the Servamps and Eves have names that complement each other, right? They match in some shape or form. The two that always stood out to me were Envy pair and Pride pair, though, for the seeming lack of connection between them, but now we know WHY that is.
For Mikuni, it’s because the name he gave Jeje was never really meant as a sign of them being partners, but intended as a punishment towards him. A reminder of his sin. Of failing to protect Kiriko. Of being a monster who drives others to insanity. But it also served to throw his own faith back into his face since the origin of it, JJ, comes from “Jesu, Joy of man’s desiring” a lively chorale you’ll often hear around Christmas time which, in the original German, expresses a very close and familiar relationship with Jesus. It’s also the song that would play from the music box Kiriko gifted Mikuni for Christmas, and collecting them was her hobby. The name isn’t about Mikuni, but Kiriko.
For Hugh and Tetsu, it’s because Hugh was never the name Tetsu gave his Servamp, but a name belonging to someone else. The name Tetsu gives Hugh, however, appends the word for silver onto the end of it (Hugh the Dark Algernon III [Gin]) which serves to make them match. Silver and Iron. It’s sooo cute. Add Tetsu’s golden bleached hair and you’ve got the whole trifecta for the fable of The Honest Woodcutter (also unrelated but I thought it was funny)

even if servamp were to get an anime reboot, id still feel like it cant really animate the true beauty and masterpiece of the manga
like yeah i mean some fight scenes would be animated, scenes would be voiceovered, but when you get to how tanaka strike just beautifully layouts the pages, the wording, and all the symbolism and meaning you can just get from that, i feel like it takes away that experience for anime-onlys and also the art in general
id still recommend reading the manga to anyone whos getting into servamp
servamp's main charm for me is the paneling
take this scene from chapter 3
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f0ce6556f7ea838accb3dc142e268bba/776e8e2415232f9f-c7/s540x810/67e138cd7417130d30a41c64629894c603996f66.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/96ea8b931a31139f468f47cf420a3db9/776e8e2415232f9f-90/s540x810/aa49a30d29412b7c82ab407864de67e4c4cf30a0.jpg)
mahiru's deteriorating mental health as he struggles to pretend everything is okay after losing his mother is depicted with the panels getting wonkier and wonkier, as if unable to handle its own weight
notice how in this sequence, the first panel depicting tooru is standing straight, but after he sees mahiru crying on the floor, tooru's panel is swaying too
but then
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/19a81705905fbad15ace748ebf54432c/776e8e2415232f9f-71/s540x810/b1c1e90d16e1e4193818c5cee2a5403a3c04a6bd.jpg)
they hug. and the panels are all standing straight again. they become each other's pillar of support.
and i think like... when animated without any special gimmick to it, it won't hit as hard as the manga pages
and there are many, many scenes where tanaka strike plays with the fact that servamp is a book
look at this page from chapter 62
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ca226fdeed37951616d6b4ec49677770/776e8e2415232f9f-58/s540x810/02831a4b322b10412ec407dc59ccd86efc5e8f4b.jpg)
now look at the next page
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a4ed81520c1e55d0339182dcf7243942/776e8e2415232f9f-d3/s540x810/11ecdec7b4b1af316bdf61259a9632a429b73dc9.jpg)
noticed something?
and considering how a lot of adaptations tend to focus on action scenes to sell the anime at the expense of important monologues like this
frankly speaking the only successful anime adaptation i've seen is mp100, and even then, studio bones fucked up literally every other adaptations they handled, like bsd and vanitas to name a few

Chapter 62 thoughts
I asked myself so many questions when I read this chapter and I made a few speculations, which I will await and see if some of them will come true in the future chapters. At this point, I feel sorry for everyone given to what happened, even for Shamrock. Yoshimasa was killed by him and now Shuuhei, although we still can’t say for sure if he is dead even though it may look like it as of now...who knows if there something more in store for him.
The theme of this chapter is betrayal and that was the motive for killing Yoshimasa. We have been revealed about him a little from flashbacks, but I think we still need to be shown more, specifically from the moment of confrontation with Shamrock. Prepare for a long post everyone!
“When I turned around, wanting to call out his name...There was no one there.”
Why did they abandon him there on the battlefield, especially Yoshimasa? That’s what hurt Shamrock the most. He didn’t want Yoshimasa to die there because he had a son and another child that was on its way.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f7e397b46b688d0d2ac9e5cf76668463/tumblr_inline_oq8zz3r02a1rqcwod_500.jpg)
“If you had the intention of forsaking me, I wished you hadn’t reach out to me.”
“Was it all just for acquiring a pawn? Why call out your name if you had plans to betray me?”
“If those were your intentions, it would have been better if I hadn’t known your name.”
Yoshimasa welcomed Shamrock who was transferred from Germany, to come join his combat unit. We have seen from the last chapter that they became friends even inviting Shamrock over to his place so he can meet Shuuhei. (I want to note that there are more ways to say friend in Japanese and Shamrock uses 「親友」・shinyuu which means closest friend, not just the casual 「友達」・tomodachi, thus showing a more stronger nuance in my opinion)
Again, I am waiting to see something from Yoshima’s side, to see what were the reasons behind his action of leaving his supposed best friend and comrade behind, for now I can’t take sides because we still need to know more.
I can understand if he did all that because he was thinking of his family, that he needed to get back to them no matter what. But abandoning Shamrock, who was also thinking about Yoshimasa’s safety as well...I don’t know, it hurts.
Shamrock: “Why...what was the reason...”
Tsubaki: "Are there good "reasons" for betraying someone? Killing someone? Is there a good reason for not wanting to forgive someone you despise?
Yoshimasa gave him hopes and the belief that he can count on him (well not just him, but the other members of the unit too), to call out their name if needed when the situation is dire. Shamrock was asking himself what was the reason...We have yet to see if we are going to be shown the moment when those two had their confrontation that lead to Yoshimasa's death. Now this makes me wonder if Shamrock just went and killed Yoshimasa just like that, plain and simple because he was emotionally wounded. Did he try to ask him the reason for why he was abandoned back then before killing him? Or perhaps stayed silent and just went ahead and committed the killing, without giving a reason, acting with the notion of “I was not given the reason for what was done to me, why should I justify myself?” It’s kind of a messed up situation. I mean there must have been some talk between those two...
This situation made me recall a similar event that happened in the story, so I’m going to do a little backtrack.
Remember the fight between Tsubaki and Kuro? Tsubaki wanted to know what were Sensei’s last words, accusing Kuro of not listening to him. I do recall in that chapter that it was implied that Sensei had said something to him, but Kuro back then was in despair, only having that goal of killing him on his mind and didn’t listen to Sensei’s words.
Getting back to our current scene in this chapter, Tsubaki appears in Shamrock’s flashback (where of course his fight with Kuro didn’t happen yet, he only had the knowledge of what happened during that time when Kuro was in his black lion form and killed Sensei).
Here Tsubaki is stating his views on the notion of betrayal and let’s remember his quote “Even if someone betrays me, I will not betray them”. ...How can he be so forgiving though?
“When you truly want to hurt a person, you just need to strike without saying anything. Don’t you think so?”
”When you cannot understand one another...I realize that is the most saddest thing. There’s no justice anywhere. Nobody can change the fact that you were deeply wounded. Nobody has the right to tell you “Don’t be hurt because of that”.
It’s alright for you to scream “I’m hurting!”
If there are people who say those kinds of things, then I will strike them for you.
(The last sentence was a bit hard to grasp but I hope I conveyed the meaning, given the context). Tsubaki had quite a speech didn’t he? He really does show compassion, I mean he saw Shamrock hurt and yet choose to speak with instead of killing him on the spot, a person belonging to the organization that was after him.
As mentioned in the beginning, betrayal has been the subject here and I believe we need to see more from Yoshima’s side to understand why did he do that to Shamrock. Was it truly his fault? Will something be revealed that will make Shamrock regret what he has done?
Speaking of regret...It does seem that he feels it now as he injured Shuuhei, which makes me think of something else. Back then, he only went after Yoshimasa, but didn’t go after the rest of the Tsuyuki family. Gosh, I remember from the last chapter how he held Shuuhei and telling him that he did before when he was small ;__; Maybe he considered that little Shuuhei didn’t have anything to do with something that was just between him and Yoshimasa, so he left him alone, seeing Shuuhei again after a long time in C3 where they fought...
Also, in regards to the fight, you guys think that maybe Shamrock was stalling, just a little? I mean, even when Shuuhei activated his powers which he was sure he would finish Sham, the latter still managed to catch him off guard. I think he could have also had the chance to bite him in the last chapter as well, when he held him...In the end, does he regret it?
“You should take a look in the mirror...That’s such an awful face.”
“Maybe the one that should look in the mirror...is me?”
I think it’s about time I should end this by saying that this chapter made me quite emotional and I won’t be expecting any less from the upcoming ones. I hope I what I wrote makes sense. Feel free to contradict me and share your opinions everyone! I would be glad to hear what you have to say! Thank you for those who took the time to read this ^_^

50 and 62 for the ask thing?
50. What made you laugh the hardest you ever had?
There's a lot of instances that made me laugh hard so I'm gonna go with the most recent one, which actually happened a couple of hours ago. I asked my sister to crack my back by stepping on it as I laid on the ground (reverse corpse pose), and it cracked so much I started laughing. I then told her "bro, I'm not sure I can get up" and started laughing even harder for some reason. I don't know why my back cracking like a dying fire was hilarious; it just...was. I laughed so much my stomach started hurting, and I laid on the floor for another five minutes humoring myself over the fact that I was scared to even attempt to stand up.
62. Seven characters you relate to?
(There's gonna be some Bungou Stray Dogs and Nanbaka spoilers ahead if you aren't up to date with the manga! Consider yourself warned!)
-------
7. Kuro from Servamp. Lazy boi who's a pacifist and loves video games? I know that all too well, my friend. Once he has the drive to do something, he will commit to it. This motivation comes in the form of Mahiru, who is nearly his polar opposite. Kuro wants to be done with the violence; he and Mahiru believe that now is the time to talk things out. He regrets his past actions, and wants to make amends. (It's more apparent when he repairs ties with Lawless, anyhow.)
6. Kunikida Doppo from Bungou Stray Dogs. I go into more detail in #5, but I relate to Kunikida because he's an idealistic man. He doesn't want to see people die in front of him, because he believes that he can save them. He has such a strong spirit and gives off mom vibes. (He honestly needs a break, though.) Despite being intimidating at first, he's actually really gullible (Dazai exploits this) and is scared of ghosts.
5. Heroic Spirit EMIYA from the Fate Series. I already kinda touched on it in another ask thing, but Emiya highly values his ideals. When they end up betraying him, he falls into despair and resolves to kill his younger self so that he wouldn't make the same mistakes. Unlimited Blade Works really hit home for me because I'm an idealistic person, and he showed me that it's unhealthy to base your entire life around your ideals, if that makes sense. I guess what I'm trying to say is that ideals shouldn't be the only thing that keeps you going.
4. Tachihara Michizou from Bungou Stray Dogs. He wants revenge on Yosano because of his older brother's death, even though he had grown up in his brother's shadow. His parents were disappointed in him when he didn't do what his brother did, which caused him to get into gangs and stealing. Despite this, he loved his brother very much and wanted to avenge him; in the end, though, he just...couldn't kill Yosano. He simply had lost his way in life. The sibling love and comparison between siblings (unintentional on my parent's part) is something I know all-too well, although I haven't broken the law before. If one of my siblings died, I'd be devastated too. Since I understand why he did what he did (even though I don't approve of some things), I get a little annoyed when people were outright bashing Tachihara for stabbing Gin and Hirotsu. It kinda reminds me of how after the Sanders Sides video Putting Ourselves First came out, people were bashing Roman for his actions without understanding the why. In detective terms, they were too busy looking at the whodunit for the self care issue instead of focusing on the whydunit.
3. Remus from the Web Series Sanders Sides! I know some people get triggered by Intrusive Thoughts, but personally mine are pretty harmless and funny to think about. Remus is this chaotic ball of energy who is just a bit on the childish side. Chaos is my (Crofters) jam, and I always have excess energy despite feeling tired 24/7. (...That didn't make sense, but just roll with it for now!)
2. Musashi from Nanbaka. It was only the most recent chapter (181, I think, or was it 182?) where Jyugo finally understood him, which broke my heart since these two were hurt so much in their pasts. Musashi was framed for something he never did, and his parents were killed by Elf just so that he and the Man With the Scar could acquire Musashi to study his spontaneous combustion. Musashi's life was ripped away from him, he was framed for killing his family, he was experimented on, he was called a monster, and he just...let them. He couldn't justify himself; no one would believe him. (Well, until Kenshirou came along.) Once he told Kenshirou his story, he was genuinely shocked to see Kenshirou trust his word. ...I know what it feels like to not be listened to, and to have people you thought you could trust turn your back on you. You just...give up, after a while. It's damaging to someone's self-esteem, and they start to lose hope that their voice, their pain will reach somebody's ears. Being misunderstood and made the bad guy is such a shitty situation to find yourself in, and I'm glad that Jyugo is now another person who sees Musashi as more than just someone who tried to kill him in the past. As Jyugo said, Musashi didn't even have the intention to kill him from the start. Plus, Musashi is a bean! He just? Loves reading?? Dude same! And he loves learning new things??? Bro me too!! And he has a (seemingly ridiculous but totally valid) fear? HahA ME TOO!!! 10/10 would like to converse about languages with him because I find them fascinating too!
1. Mikoshiba from Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun. I know I put this in the #1 spot, but there are fewer things for me to relate to with him. Mikoshiba is, for all intents and purposes, a whole mood. He's an introverted otaku who just can't talk to girls normally for the life of him, flirts and gets super embarrassed about it, and is probably one of the most sane people in the anime and manga. He has anxiety (seen when he was asked to go to a mixer), which isn't really detrimental to him but certainly holds him back, and he is easily swayed to do what his friends want him to do (...with the right bribes, of course). 10/10 give this boi the love he deserves!
#holy shit it's long#i'm sorry about that#thanks for the ask!#bungou stray dogs#bungosd#bsd tachihara#bsd kunikida#damn i should've put Poe on that list instead#he is a pure bean#protecc poe#nanbaka the numbers#nanbakaidiots#nanbaka#musashi nanbaka#nanbaka musashi#remus sanders#sympathetic remus#remus strikes again#chaotic ball of energy YES#sanders sides#gekkan shoujo nozaki kun#monthly girls' nozaki kun#mikoto mikoshiba#sleepy ash#kuro sleepy ash#servamp#servamp of sloth#heroic spirit emiya#fate series#fate stay night ubw

Tiny post in prep for a bigger one about Misono later ✨
So in volume 6, chapter 32, “Miscalculation,” there’s a moment that kind of... Caught my eye thanks to a later moment. This duo of panels--
Where Lawless speaks about how when an Eve is dying, a Servamp will get a “feedback” of sorts of their human partners death throes because of the mental link.
And then, later, in volume 11, chapter 62, “What’s the Number on the Bottom of the Die” Kuro...
Inexplicably makes this face immediately after Touma attempts to blast Mahiru point blank, and Mahiru passes out. Almost as if he’s hearing something.
Why is this important? Because of the way we’re shown Mahiru “coming to.”
What plays out is almost like a show of regrets, wants, and desires. Mahiru tries to remember what he had to do for summer homework, and Sakuya appears inside his mind, thanking him for everything he’s done, and saying he’s done enough. Next is Kuro, who apologizes, then says that an apology doesn’t cut it. Mahiru considers who he wanted to become, remembers Touma saying that he was just pretending to be like his uncle, and eventually comes to a sobering conclusion that he... Might have died.
What point am I making here, considering that Mahiru very obviously did not in fact die?
Well... What if he did?
Touma is not a stupid man. He would not have left unless he was certain that Mahiru was dead. He’s the type to double tap, just to make sure whatever he’s trying to kill stays down.
Mahiru seems to think that some sort of phantom child version of Tsurugi shielded him, and perhaps, on some level, that is true, as poltergeists can in fact interact with their surroundings on some level, which is what I think the child Tsurugi might be manifesting as.
--But a phantom cannot have a solid form, even if it can push someone out of the way. Touma would not just walk away if he saw that his bullet didn’t meet its mark, and Mahiru did not have a bullet wound.
Y’all, I think... Mahiru did die. Then, for whatever reason... Didn’t stay that way.
And I think it might be tied to whatever Tooru was going to tell him.

Literary references and character abilities (chapter 62)
While I got the gist of what everyone in this chapter talked about, I have yet to take my time and look up all the words and translate properly, but I just found something so interesting and I wanted to share with you and it’s about the names of the abilities used by Shuuhei and Shamrock, because I did not know about the things that were used as reference. I just love how Servamp is filled with so many things from literature and the amazing names for the character abilities that have dual readings that have a connection with one another. I wrote down the observations I made in regards to the literary works that have served as inspiration. Hope they will make sense! I’m gonna put these under the cut, as they can be spoilerish and also because it is quite long, I’m surprised that I was able to write this much, for I ramble a lot about the things that I think about during translations and things that I found out during research. It would be nice to hear your opinions in regards to the things I wrote :)
And a shout-out to @xchibikai for providing the RAWS. Thank you so much!
Alright, so the new chapter begins with Shuuhei chanting the words of a spell that is connected to his previous ability that we were introduced in the last chapter called “Hayabusa no me” which I had translated as “Hawkeye” and it’s a good thing that I did not went with “falcon” (the Japanese readings differed in regards to some readings of the kanji and “falcon” and “hawk” were present as I made some light research).
Now, Shuuhei is portrayed to stand in a field, more precisely a rye field which is also mentioned in his spell, which I will loosely translate, because it’s not a surprise anymore to encounter ambiguous things while translating and I’m saying this because I feel like if I had some certain words there, I could have understood better, so if things are vague in Japanese, might as well make it as vague in translation. Ok so here goes, this is the rough translation:
“...I am the law, thou art demon
It’s clear which one is crooked
Fall from the rye field’s cliff
Where no one can find you
Even holding on to the sixpence you gave me
I cannot come back
Four and twenty blackbirds "Nobody in the rye"
(***notes: In the first line, he uses an archaic version of “you”. Second line: crooked as in “crooked ways/mind”, having distorted views. I think that's the meaning, based on context)
At first glance I thought that it would be a reference to “Catcher in the Rye”, but no, it’s actually from an old nursery rhyme called “Sing a Song of Sixpence” that I even found translated in Japanese here.
Ok, know I’ll talk about something that I was reluctant at first to write because I thought I would make things way too boring, but then I decided to write in hopes that it would be useful for you writers and artists out there, to present with more details that might be helpful when you want to portray something in regards to Shuuhei. So yeah, let’s talk about birds :))
Once again I want to remind in regards to what I said above pertaining to my choice for using the word “hawk”. While in Japanese, the word タカ (taka) with this kanji 「鷹」 is used to refer to that bird, in our case here we have Shuuhei’s ability written in katakana as ハヤブサ (Hayabusa). Consider katakana as a visual way that shows that it has special meaning and to put emphasis on a word. When I looked up the words, the reading of “hayabusa” had the translation falcon and this kanji 「 隼 」 but, I looked into a it a bit and found another kanji, which might be rarely used, which also the reading of “hayabusa” and it denoted “hawk”. So you see, by having just this reading in katakana, without knowing to which version of “hayabusa” it might be referring to exactly, we are mostly left with just the visual that it is about a bird of prey, something that both birds have in common. In my case, as you might have guessed, I went with “hawk” because of the idiom to have eyes like a hawk, which totally fits with Shuuhei’s ability. I don’t think I have heard the use of “falcon eyes”, but if some of you know, then I guess, it’s up to you to choose what sounds best. :)
On to the next bird. In Japanese the word ツグミ (tsugumi) was used which refers to the bird Turdus merula, known more as the common blackbird. In the dictionary, it gave me " thrush” (also, be careful if you for some reason want to google it, add “bird” in the sentence, or else you will get a totally different result, which doesn’t have anything to do with birds...). I’m no position to explain things such as genus or family of these species as it’s not my field of expertise, but I just chose to go with the term blackbird because it adds more ambiguity/mystery to the verse that Shuuhei uses in the spell, because, at least in my opinion, when I heard blackbird I could think of crows or ravens and just like in the rhyme “Sing a Song of Sixpence”, it says blackbirds, not directly “ thrushes ” and thus, if you somehow want to write or draw a scene with Shuuhei performing his spell, you can choose from more terms.
While normally it should have been written as twenty-four blackbirds, I went with the way it was from the rhyme as “ Four and twenty“ in order to keep as much from the referenced piece. This part was in kanji while the furigana beside them is the actual pronunciation that is used when calling out the spells/abilities and in this case it is “Nobody in the rye”.
Oh man, these verses were quite hard to understand because that’s how it goes with poems/songs..so many things can be left out in order to be kept short, thus becoming ambiguous and I just can’t figure out some stuff. I had to imagine the intonation, like where is he pausing...does the next line have anything to do with the previous one or just moves on to a new idea/imagery because that’s how it seemed to me... I mean there is even a change in perspective there, it’s like he was referring to himself towards the end rather than the person he was directing the spell towards. It’s because of this line あなたがくれた6ペンス (Anata ga kureta 6 pensu) which translates as “the sixpence given to me by you/ that you had given me” There are more ways to say “give” in Japanese, and it depends on the points of view of the speakers, that’s why I bolded you (the second person) but I won’t go any further, cuz i’m not gonna hold a Japanese grammar class here, although sometimes it feels like I do and I apologize for that. Even now I still have problems with those verbs. That’s why I was quite perplexed with the last verses... (for once please, I just want to translate a chapter from the get-go but nooo...) Not sure how much sense his spell makes, we can just see that it’s made using a lot of the imagery in the nursery rhyme.
Alright, while leaving out the small headache I had with figuring out the wording, all in all, Shuuhei’s ability is awesome. Also keep in mind that his theme is that of birds. Apparently, his power allows him to have an unobstructed bird’s eye view that spans tens of kilometers, being able to accurately determine the positions and movements of things.
Onto Shamrock now.
This little story here called “The Nighthawk Star” is the reference for Shamrock’s ability that bears the same name [ よだかの星] and it won’t take you much to read it, because, you will see that it has a connection. In short, it’s about the Nighthawk bird who was looked down upon other animals and especially by a true hawk because he didn’t like that the former bird had “hawk” in it’s name. You see where I’m getting at? For one, we have yet again the allusion to the bird theme and also, remember in the last chapter that we had the notion of imposters/ fakes? Just like in the story, it tells of a true hawk and a fake one, because the Nighthawk itself is not a species of hawk. Honestly, when I made this connection, that hopefully makes sense to you guys as well I found it so awesome how well they fitted. And now let’s get to the other reading of the ability, which is actually the one used when the characters call it out.
Shamrock is actually German for those who did not know and his ability name is "Die Verwandlung” known as “The Metamorphosis” in English, a novella written by Franz Kafka, where the main character turns into an insect (or vermin as I have seen written. Google it if you guys want to). I read the summary of it to get the general idea of it and to find a connection and we can see that Shamrock as well transforms into a spider-like creature. Now, we had two literary pieces referenced for him. Up until now, I would say that “The Nighthawk” story reflects Shuuhei more and subsequently Yoshimasa as well, given the whole bird theme. This is just my theory, but maybe Shamrock was appointed that name for his ability because he is connected with them (Yoshimasa and Shuuhei), like they were tied by fate, y’know. It’s a bit difficult to put into words, thus I would be glad to know your opinions as well, dear readers. Oh, and did you notice that only half of his body, the right side took the shape of that spider form? I think this is just an extra detail, because we know that his right eye was injured. Can he transform entirely? That remains to be seen. In “The Metamorphosis”, if the theme in this one was "transformation”, well guess what, it is also reflected in the aforementioned story. I guess it’s a spoiler if you haven’t read it, but in the end, the Nighthawk dies and becomes a star, thus he changed into something else.
Could this be an allusion to Shamrock who was human and now became a vampire? Also, Shuuhei also went trough a change, hasn’t he? If we recall, when he had entered C3, he was not accepted in the combat unit, being regarded as weak and not able to use his magic well. I wonder, did he train since then to become stronger or was he hiding the ability we have seen, wanting to use it just when he would confront Shamrock to avenge his dad?
Alright, it’s about time to end this post and I just want to say that this chapter was so intense, so many things were revealed and Tanaka-sensei hasn’t disappointed us, the references and allusions in this one chapter were great and I would love to know if anything I wrote made sense to you guys. I hope I can hear some of your opinions ^_^ Thank you so much for reading!
