fp was always an early riser, until alcohol came into the picture. what he had been drinking to forget, he didn’t know. maybe gladys and jb leaving him? he didn’t know, honestly. however, he looked at the sleeping woman beside him, remembering times before that this had happened. his hand moved her blonde hair away from her face before he stood up, pulling on his boxers and nothing else. he padded to the kitchen to start making breakfast. since he’d stopped drinking so heavily and working at pops, he’d started making himself breakfast every day. 

he put some bacon in a skillet and glanced from the kitchen down the hall to his room, the door slightly ajar. his son hadn’t come home last night, certainly at the cooper house since the mama bear was in his own bed. he poured two cups of coffee and set one on the counter, padding back to his room. hopefully she still drank coffee? “allie? baby, are you hungry?”

       A SCOFF ON HIS LIPS, instant gut reaction, call it self preservation, because this wasn’t the first time he’s been here with her. Broken promises and heartache on both sides of the coin. He had made so many mistakes too, too many to count. The first made over two DECADES ago, when he’d enlisted, desperate to get out of this town, desperate to not repeat his old mans foot steps, trapped in a town that bled him dry, sucking away every ounce of optimism that had once been. 

         But history had a funny way of REPEATING itself, the cosmos own little kick in the nuts to remind him his place. He’s stoic, heart pounding beneath his shirt, sure it’ll bust out of his chest any second. “ you don’t mean that Ali --- you can’t --you’re married, hell, I’m married --- this, US -- we had our shot --- and i blew it....maybe we BOTH did.” 

           A dry laugh echos in his throat, head shaking as he exhales a long, slow breath, “ if i’m not, then maybe i SHOULD be --- you got outta this life Alice, trust me, you don’t want back in it...”

“you talkin’ about last night?” he couldn’t help but sound slightly hurt. why did she regret it? “you aren’t with hal, i’m not with gladys...why was it a mistake?” he honestly had no idea. the hurt look on his face wasn’t as easily masked as the hurt in his voice. “nevermind, allie.” he stood up from his seat across from her. “i have to get back to work.” he started back off towards the kitchen.

the words that came out of her mouth weren’t what he thought he’d hear when she started to speak. he thought he’d hear more excuses. as to why she couldn’t be with him. why they were better off apart. however, this...this was new. and unexpected. “oh yeah? and what’re you gonna do? now that you’re gonna be who you were always meant to be?”

fp looked at the woman, his dark yes meeting hers. he ran a hand through his hair, then. he sighed heavily as he watched her for a moment. “yeah, but i thought that meant somethin’. apparently not.” when she’d gone back to hal, he’d been upset. he’d loved her deeply. however, he couldn’t help but feel like she’d betrayed him. he shook his head again and ran a hand through his hair again. “why are you here, alice?” he looked at the woman then.

                   ALWAYS TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE. wasn’t that always the trouble with them? It had been back in high school, when he was too stubborn, too fool hardy to know what he had was REAL, something palatable, that could have been something, if he’d fought a little hard, tried a little more.  And now, sitting across her kitchen table it hit him all at once, like it had that day in pop’s. ‘ LEAVE HAL....AT HOME. ’ words echo around and around, he shakes his head, maybe it was the wine they’d drunk at dinner with the kids talking. But now, alone, Jug & Betty upstairs, out of earshot.  

           “ ---  I played it cool when I was scared of letting go.”  he isn’t sure if he’s talking about that day at pop’s or all those years ago when he’d just let her walk into the arms of Hal Cooper.  Wine glass raising to his lips, he didn’t even fucking like wine, and clearly the damn stuff had gone straight to his head.
