"Another slave movie"? I'm a very avid filmgoer but did I somehow miss something? Has there been an over-abundance if films addressing slavery? If so, can you name five? Of course 12 Years came out in 2013 but before that I remember Amistad from 20 years ago. Any other recent ones? And the TV's Roots of over 40 years ago was not a theatrical release. Better yet, can you name another film depicting slavery written, produced and directed by an actual descendent of slaves? And one about Nat Turner?

Django Unchained, Lincoln, The Butler, Belle, and Glory off the top of my head. but true not too many made by black people and i’ve never heard of one about nat turner; HOWEVER, i think you’re missing my point. what i said was (paraphrasing) “even though i support this movie, it’s kinda unfortunate that only “black films” about slavery/reprecussion thereafter get mainstream attention” and i still stand by that. things have gotten a bit better with hits like Straight Outta Compton and Empire on the small screen, but i think that it should be important for “black films” to kinda move away from that trope. i’m not saying to forget where we came from or anything, but black people have so much more stories to offer than just slaves/maids/butlers/civil rights activists. that’s all i was saying
