I—feel the need to say that I do think of Castiel as queer independently of Dean, just that a queer reading of him is immediately apparent and it's hard to separate from its relation to Dean. Given that Dean also has a strong queer reading and it's Dean he dragged out of hell, who made him feel, and who he fell for in season 4. Castiel's character arc is my favourite in Supernatural and having him be a canonically queer fallen angel only makes his journey stronger whether or not those feelings are reciprocated.

If we're talking about shipping, I like Destiel's love story most even as it also frustrates me. He and Sam are really cute too. Castiel and Soulless Sam would be a trip (how was Soulless Sam hurt that Cas didn't come when he prayed?). Sam's an Angel fanboy, Castiel thinks Sam's an abomination, and they're both dissolutioned in the end. There's a good story there.

I also feel the need to say that it's okay to prioritise a romantic relationship in fiction. Canon or not.
