Designed by Lily Jencks Studio in collaboration with Nathanael Dorent Architecture, Ruins Studio is a private house, built within the existing stone ruins of an 18th-century Scottish farmhouse. . “To build within the walls of a ruin enforces the idea that our contemporary occupation is just another layer to be added to the rich history that every site possesses. Ruins Studio takes this simple observation to guide each decision, from the use of geometry, to the use of material and colour. To maintain the integrity of the ruins the building envelope follows the pitched roof and dimensions of the existing ruin gable end. This is the image of the house archetype, well known to everyone. To provide a counter-point to the irregular stone walls this envelope is clad in black EPDM. Its crisp dark silhouette is a quiet background to the ruins story of weathering and use. Within thisenvelop sits the shell, a curvilinear enclosure with soft shadows -a strong juxtapose with the other layers. Openings in the existing ruins walls define the location for windows, which, in turn, form the curves of the interior shell. The house is located in Centinela Hill, in Matanzas, seeking the views towards the village of La Boca, where the River Rapel flows into the Pacific Ocean. The project works as an interplay between two intersected volumes, where the first level contains the kitchen a living area and a dining area in form of an open plan and also a storage. The project searches to integrate the interiors with the spacious terraces creating in this way a sensation of greater amplitude. These terraces, one acting as an access and the other as an additional living room, are generated through an act of volumetric subtraction and provide good sunlight exposure. #habitattheory (at Matanzas, Chile)

This renovated Scottish farmhouse with sinuous interior walls is a jaw-dropper. In the remote countryside of Dumfries, @lilyjencksstudio and @nathanaeldorent built a minimalist abode with a “tubular” shell on the site of 17th-century ruins. Rather than demolish the crumbling stone walls, the design team inserted a crisp modern home within them in a nod to the site’s history and passage of time.
