Do You Need a Serger Machine? What You Need to Know Before You Buy
If you're passionate about sewing or just starting to explore the world of garment creation, you may have heard the term "serger" floating around. But do you really need one?
Serger machines, also known as overlock machines, are popular among experienced sewists for their ability to give professional-looking finishes. If you're wondering whether adding a serger to your sewing setup is worth it, let’s break down what they do and what you need to know before you buy one.
What Exactly Is a Serger?
Serger machines are special types of sewing machines that are designed to trim and enclose raw edges while stitching seams. It does this by using multiple threads (usually three or four) to create a tight, durable seam that won’t fray. Sergers also sew much faster than regular sewing machines, making them a favorite for sewists who value efficiency.
One of the key features of a serger is its ability to create clean, finished edges—especially useful when working with fabrics that tend to fray, such as knits or linens. You might have seen these neat seams in store-bought clothing, where the inside edges are overlocked, preventing fabric from unraveling. That’s what a serger does best.
When Do You Need a Serger?
The short answer is: it depends on your sewing needs. A serger isn’t necessary for basic sewing projects, but it can be a game-changer if you want to elevate the quality of your garments or home décor items. Here are some scenarios where a serger can really shine:
Finishing Garments: If you love sewing clothes, a serger can give your pieces a professional, store-bought look. The finished edges are neat, strong, and smooth.
Working with Knits: Sergers handle stretchy fabrics like jersey and spandex exceptionally well. The overlock stitch allows the seam to stretch with the fabric, preventing popped stitches.
Speed: Sergers stitch much faster than regular machines. If you're tackling large projects or running a sewing business, this could save you a lot of time.
Durability: Seams created by sergers tend to be more durable because they use multiple threads. This is ideal for clothing that will see a lot of wear and tear, like activewear or children's clothes.
If you find yourself constantly working on garments, knits, or large projects, you may want to seriously consider getting a serger.
How to Choose the Right Serger for You
If you’ve decided that a serger is the right addition to your sewing arsenal, it’s important to choose one that fits your needs and budget. Here are a few factors to consider:
Number of Threads
Most basic sergers use three or four threads, but some models offer up to five. A four-thread serger is the most versatile and will work for most projects. If you're a beginner, sticking with a three- or four-thread machine is a good starting point.
Differential Feed
This is an essential feature if you plan to work with stretchy or delicate fabrics. The differential feed controls how the fabric is fed through the machine, preventing issues like puckering or wavy seams. If you're sewing knits or lightweight fabrics, make sure your serger has this feature.
Ease of Threading
Sergers can be notoriously tricky to thread, but newer models have simplified the process with color-coded threading guides and automatic air threading systems. If you're not confident in your ability to manage multiple threads, look for a machine that makes threading easier.
Speed and Noise
Since sergers operate at higher speeds than standard sewing machines, some models can be quite loud. If noise is a concern for you, read reviews or test a machine in-store to see if it operates at a comfortable noise level. Speed is another factor to consider if you’re working on large projects.

Overcomers United - Our Financial Goal for 2020
Please be one of the first to donate to Overcomers United and help us reach our goal of $25,000 by Thanksgiving of 2020. Our aim is to empower low income individuals to improve the quality of their lives, the environment and the lives of those in our communities.
We support those that are low income and in need, especially, if they have a craft or skill. For example, we are helping a refugee who is a tailor by trade. He reports that every time he applies for a job they require Canadian experience. Unfortunately, unless someone hires him he will not be able to get that experience. We were able to assist him by giving him a donated sewing machine and advising him to go to another community agency where he will be able to volunteer and upgrade his skills. This person needs a job because his rent is over $900 per month for a bachelor apartment. He does not receive that much from Ontario Works. Furthermore, he also needs to support his family back home.
We are hoping to raise a minimum of $25,000 by each Thanksgiving in order to issue grants and honor individuals, groups and organizations that make a difference in our communities. Overcomers United expects the individual recipient to pay it forward. For example: by hiring a low income individual(s) in the future.
In other words, our aim is to help low income individuals produce items from which they will be able to generate an income. We hope to raise a minimum of $25,000 by each Thanksgiving in order to issue grants and honor individuals, groups, and organizations that make a difference in our communities.
You can help by contributing items that we may convert into cash or by donating funds. These items are needed to empower individuals in need to create items they can sell.
When their items are sold, the individuals’ self-esteem and self-confidence would increase and motivation to succeed would also intensify. Other benefits would include improved mental and physical well-being with the prospect of earning a living wage. This may also allow those that are receiving government benefits to get a sense of self-worth by coming off government support.
Our current wish list is as follows:
Funds
A free place for low income people to display and sell their creations
Volunteers – especially with social media skills
Yarn
Thread
Fabric
Needles
Quilted, sewn, macramé, embroidered, painted, knitted and crocheted items
Sewing machines
Serger machines
Sewn items
Storage bins
Items we can turn into cash, such as opened packages (gifts)

sewing advice
Hi everyone, I’m Daniela and for today's video I was in the mood for some sewing machine I’ve been self-teaching me how to sew and I was inspired by a top I saw on a Vintage style shop to try and make something similar The top is this one, it has what I think Isa fake button placket, some lace details, and a pretty gathered waist I will leave a link to the shop in the description box bellow, but this top is out of stock at least for now.
As for fabric, I didn’t have anything as pretty as the one on the source image, so I went with a cotton white bed sheet from ikea I went into this project as a sewing exercise, so I also didn’t want to waste a more expensive fabric on this So here’s how I made the pattern.
I measured myself around the torso and figured that a square piece of fabric with about 39 cm would be enough, you’ll see later that I actually ended up tightening a bit Added a seam allowance And also added darts to the sides, about 10 cm under the neckline and I made them 8 cm deep I know it's kinda hard but, try to figure out if the top will fit over your head, otherwise, you may need to add a zipper so it can open up a bit more I traced all of these measurements onto some tissue paper first and pined it to two layers of fabric, right sides facing, and cut it Before removing the paper I used chalk to mark the placement of the darts After cutting I pressed the darts with the iron, and pinned them in place on both sides Then I just sewed them with a straight stitch, which is also the only type of stitch this machine does, unless you use a special zig-zag attachment which I don’t really like, it's kind of fiddly So that’s why you’ll see that I didn’t make any stitch to keep the ends from fraying.
Next, I ironed the darts to make them nice and sharp.
For the fake button placket, I cut a strip of fabric with the same height of the torso piece and about 6 cm in width, adding seam allowance Then, I Ironed it folding the edges inside, like this.
And pinned it to the center of the main piece.
Then sewed it close to the edges on both sides Then, I placed the back piece, right sides facing, on top of the front piece and pinned the sides You can’t really tell on this shot but,I didn’t account for the loss of height from the darts, so the bottom doesn’t quite match, but that worked out fine since I had cut the fabric longer than what I needed, so just bear that in mind when you're making yours Again I sewed it on both sides.
Halfway through my bobbin thread ended so I wasn't actually sewing anything but if you by any chance wanna know how these types of machines wind bobbins, a treadle machine, this is how I do it First, obviously, I take the bobbin out and place it in the winder which is this section right here then I untighten this piece, I think its called stop motion screw maybe this will stop the motion of the sewing needle so the thread doesn't get all tangled up wrap the thread around the bobbin and put it through this piece at the bottom this will give tension to the thread now I just pedal while pressing this, I don't know, latch and that is it Once the machine was loaded and ready to work,I continued sewing the other side as well.
Remember when I told I ended up tightening a bit, this is what I meant, I tried it on and tightened it about 2 cm, also rounding up slightly towards the neckline,to fit a bit better.
Then I trimmed the excess fabric and pressed the seams.
While I was at it, I also double folded and pressed the hem for the neckline.
For the straps, I measured and cut 2 strips with about 2 x 37 cm adding extra for seam allowance.
Then folded and ironed it before sewing machine the sides on both strips.
I used a loop turned to turn the loops inside out.

Best Sewing Machine
Answering your questions about the brother PE800 embroidery machine whoo welcome to the Sewing Report I'm Jennifer Moore helping you discover your love of sewing crafts and DIY projects you guys have been asking me a lot of questions about this machine down in the comments so I thought I would try to answer as many of them as I can in this episode solet's go over some of these specs of the Brother PE 800.
I've owned this machine for about six months and I absolutely love it how much does it cost well I live in the United States so US Dollars here I paid six hundred and thirty dollars but the price has certainly been changing and at last check I also noticed around Christmastime of last year this went down to like 550 so if you check around you may be able to get a really good price also if you can get it slightly used or maybe refurbished might also be a good bet as well but this is a fairly new model out now the largest hoop this was designed for was a5 by 7 so it can stitch out a design up to that size I did purchase an additional pack of hoops because it does not come with any other size besides five by seven and I also wanted a four by four and the small like little ova lone for like monograms and it came with a 5 by 12 inch hoop and I've been getting questions can you use larger hoops you technically can but the design you stitch out on it can't be any larger than 5 by 7 so say you want to do two designs in this 5 by 12 inch field you could technically not have to recoup but you can't stitch out a single design that's larger than you can't do the 5 by12 so that's what I'm saying but this hoop set was a pretty good deal I use pretty much the 4 by 4 and the 5 by 7 but it is nice having an extra 5x7 inch hoop now if I am stitching out a design I can hoop the next item if I have to 5by 7 items so that's kind of convenient and it also has a large color LCD touchscreen that's a great feature and from what I can tell it's a pretty large improvement over the PE 770 so that's why I decided to spend a little bit of extra money and get the newest model you can actually do quite a bit of editing on the touchscreen itself you could mirror designs you can move them you can resize them and you can also combine two files in one design so you can say say you have like a monogram and then you have say a design with like a picture on it you can put that all into one stitched out design and you can save it for future use so you can actually do some basic functions right ton the machine without having to get software it has 138 built-in embroidery designs including 11 lettering fonts seven of them are in English so the other four I guess three are Japanese and one is something I cannot pronounce10 frame shapes and 14 border styles it allows you to rotate mirror image and increase and decrease the size of the designs which i think is incredible now someone just asked me Jen can you use different styles of bobbins different sizes I believe you can only use this type the one that comes with the machine it came with I believe four bobbins so you've got one and then a couple extra sto have on hand but it is the size a class 15 style I think it's sa one five six and that is the type of bob and you should be buying for this machine I personally wouldn't gamble with another type you don't want to mess up the machine and you don't want to jeopardize the quality of your project so I would certainly only use the style of bobbin and that Brother recommends which is this type right here and I will try to link all of these supplies below if you're looking for accessories or if you want to pick up more bobbins I have not purchased more bobbins yet but I'm probably will and I haven't tried the pre wound type that looks so convenient and we've got to get to talking about embroidery designs I've been getting questions about that as well so I'm gonna try to explain what I've been doing with the designs now there are some included designs with the machine if you want to import other designs you do need to have a USB flash drive and you can put designs on your computer get your designs of the computer import them onto the USB Drive and then you can take your USB Drive and there's a place on the machine to plug it in so that's how you can transfer your designs back and forth I have been purchasing designs off of Etsy like I've gotten some fonts off of there are some cute little applique designs and on a website called I believe it's called embroidery designs dot-com that's another good one but there's there's so many places all over the internet where you can get pretty inexpensive embroidery designs in fact I believe embroider e designs come even has you can get like three free ones per week they have a library full of ones where they don't charge you for it the designs that are imported to this machine they have to be p/es files so that's brothers file type for the designs I think there's some misconceptions that you can like upload any random picture like something from Adobe or like a JPEG or a picture you could not do that like nothing from Adobe Illustrator if you bring in and brought an embroidery design it has to-specifically be digitized for embroidery so you can't just do images there is software available it's very expensive it's like a thousand dollars where you-can digitize images but again you're paying out the nose for that so if you are an embroidery designer that's something to invest in but if you're like me and you only use designs every once in a while and you're not designing your own stuff I don't feel like there's any reason for me to spend that much money on embroidery software so when I do need to have something digitized I found a few Etsy sellers that will do that for you I've had a few logos done they charged me ten bucks thought it was a good price but you have to specifically take that logo or image and get it digitized with embroidery software so you can't just use random picture so I did want to make that clear but again I'm not a designer so the software I've been using is Em brilliance Express it's a free version of this one brand that has all sorts of different tiers and levels of prices they have the fancy software I got the free one because cheap and the functionality of the free version is pretty limited now you can purchase BX file fonts on easy so you can get like really cute fonts and then you can import it into this free software and that way you don't have to do like each letter individually you can spell out words and phrases and that's been a good way for me to do lettering in the embroidery machine without having to you know be like M oh oh so that does save you some some time there I would be careful some of these embroidery fonts on Etsy that have the BX style they don't come with punctuation so if you're trying to do someone's name great but if you're trying to do whole phrases like you know it's New Year's or something it won't have like the apostrophe or like Tom or an exclamation point so be on the lookout if you're purchasing those BX fonts if you depending on what you need it for you may want to be sure it includes punctuation with that but I but I found a lot of cute fonts now in this and brilliance Express software you can merge a BX font like word or phrase with a PS file so like say I have a snowflake I could put the snowflake and merge it with like it's snowing but you can't merge two pea files you have to pay for the upgrade so say you had like a snowflake PGs file you have like Christmas tree you can't put those together in that software and then export it but what you can do is you can import it into the Machine and you can design something straight on the LCD screen so if it's something simple like that you can just do it in the machine down the road I may upgrade that umbrella ins software a little bit just to be able to merge designs more but for now I really don't need it and I don't want to pay for that so that's what we're going with for now but I did want to explain more about the designs because I think there's some confusion over what you can do the capabilities of the machine and also what you need to do if you want to get like your picture or your image your logo digitized for the machine you can't just like put like a JPEG in here will not it will definitely not stitch that out so I hope that answers some questions about this embroidery machine if you have any more leaving below in the comments full disclaimer I am NOT some sort of brother certified expert I'm just someone that owns and likes this machine and clearly likes talking about it so I hope you enjoyed this video if you would like to watch other videos about the Brother p800 I did kind of a fun unboxing of it and demonstration I also have some other videos on doing like hats t-shirts and towels so those are in a playlist as well and I will link that in the description box but I hope you enjoyed this look into the Brother PG800 and I will definitely be making more videos about this machine so stay tuned I'm Jennifer Moore with you for the Sewing Report.

Best Sewing Machine Advice
hi there Stuart from fabric mouse we're here today talking about pressure adjustors which is something you would have found on your granny's old singer and its the little dial here you could push up and down to change the amount of pressure that you're putting on your fabric it's a thing that has pretty much disappeared on sewing machines largely now due to some machines going electronic and having electronic adjusters just some having a spring inside.
which will compensate for 80% of the of the fabric on a new machine this is what I'm looking out this is the Janome 725 here we've still got a proper pressure adjuster and as you can see what it is here is we can change the pressure on that spring which will change the exact amount of pressure we'll put in on the fabric we are multi brand we sell everything but it seems to be if we look across the machines that we have that comes on the feature we've got the Janome 725 the Janome dks range the genome m-series range and Janome Atelier is here the pressure adjuster when you get to your professional range of machines you've got this huge one here and it even shows you a little window exactly where your pressure is knowing how crucial it is here for people that want a professional finish so the reason why it's so important as as you have multiple layers of fabric around your foot what we can do is we can slacken it off and it just takes that pressure off and it lets the fabric get through underneath your foot alternately if you're using something silky or really fine fabric on your dress making instead of the machines are detecting and doing it automatically you can actually say now I am using the silk I want to control it you can tighten it right off grip that fabric and pull it through without you having to push it through yourself and that's the main feature of it we're going to create a link that will list all the machines on our website that have that feature if you are a dressmaker definitely consider a machine where you can control yourself if you're wanting to go college to a course you're going to learn a lot more about a machine and machine handling if you have a mechanical pressure adjuster thanks Stuart from fabric mouse see you soon.
