originally posted on my old blog @/saintchrollo after i read anna karenina for the first time. court advisor!chrollo (but you all know he's kuroro to me) and princess!reader. i've been in such a kuroro mood you'll have to forgive me. its something about autumn and schoolin. here is a link to an audiobook of anna karenina so you don't have an excuse to not go read it.

“I thought I might find you here.” 

The voice from behind startles you. You jump slightly in your chair, holding the book you had been reading against your chest. Turning, you relax slightly upon seeing where the voice was coming from. “Lord Lucifuru, you startled me.” 

The black haired man tilts his head to the side as he approaches, hand resting on the back of your armchair. “Are we not on a first name basis anymore, Princesse?” He lilts the title in the accent he’s picked up from his years of council. 

You avoid his gaze, cheeks heating up. The room warms with the memories of the other night. Squirreled away behind a statue, whispered confessions, his lips everywhere they shouldn’t have been— Your lips, your neck, your chest. 

“What if we aren’t alone?” You whisper. If you lose yourself to the daydream enough, you can feel his hands on your hips. 

“I checked,” Kuroro says, voice soft and reassuring. “We are most certainly alone.” 

You straighten up and crane your head around, as if to double check his words. He tilts your head back towards him with a finger under your chin. 

“I’d never steer you wrong,” Kuroro promises, then tacks on, “[First.]” 

It fills you with such warmth to hear your name from his lips, and you have to avert your gaze to keep yourself from melting into a puddle. 

“Are you sure there’s no one else here?” You ask again. 

“And risk my own head?” Kuroro asks, a smile pulling at the left of his lips. 

You suppose he has a point. You relax back into the chair, resting your book on your chest to hold its place. “Have you been searching for me, then, Kuroro?” 

His half smile reaches his eyes. That’s more like it. “I have, actually. All over. I should have started here, it seems. Would of had more time with you.” 

“You should have known I’d be here,” You hum. “After all, I was told this morning over breakfast that my crate of books finally got deemed… What’s the word you use?” 

“They were found to be without ill intent,” Kuroro restates. “We just wanted to be sure that no harm would come to you.” 

“Father coddles me,” You remark, “As do you.” 

“Well, I’d be out of a job if I didn’t do as he told. And you’d be out of a job if you didn’t get coddled. That is under the description of princess.” 

“I do other things,” You protest. 

“I know you do,” Kuroro says, his eyes glancing down at the book splayed across your chest before back to your eyes. 

“What have you come found me for?” You press. 

“Do I always have an ulterior motive with you?” Kuroro returns your question with one of his own. At the raise of your eyebrow, he concedes. “There is a dinner tonight that you are expected to attend. A prince is here to make your acquaintance, in the most casual manner possible.”

Disgust fills your face. “This is what you come to tell me of?” 

“Would you have preferred someone else?” Kuroro asks. 

No, you’d rather have not. “I simply thought… I thought you had come to see me. For no other reason than to see me.”

Kuroro hums. He cups your cheek in his hand, thumb smoothing over its softness. You can’t help but lean into his touch, bring your hand to cover his. To keep him close. 

“I offered to come tell you,” Kuroro promises, crouching down by your chair. “I wanted to break the news to you, not someone else.” 

“Will you be at dinner?” You inquire. 

“I’ll be there. I must advise your father that the visiting suitor is not up to your family’s standards. That is my job, after all. As an adivisor and as a lover.” 

Kuroro’s tongue was always so smooth, and if you had more control over your life you’d be wary of it. But, with your sole outlet being the man before you, you ease yourself against his silver words. 

“Lover?” You repeat, eyelashes fluttering at such a title. 

“Should I take it back?” He asks with bated breath. 

You shake your head. “You should tell Father to marry us instead.”

Kuroro’s chuckle is self deprecating. “I am no king.” 

“You could be,” You whisper, getting your hopes up against your best judgement. 

“My best work is done from the shadows, my darling. I crumple under the public eye. And you were made for it. The people adore you.” 

You pout. “You’re going to break my heart.” 

Kuroro smiles gently at you. “You’ve known that, [First.]”

“I wish I didn’t,” You sigh. “I wish I wasn’t so aware.”

Kuroro shifts his hand to take yours in his own, bringing your knuckles to his lips. The gesture is familiar, impersonal now. He rolls your hand over, slides his fingers down your wrist, the underside of your forearm, and presses a kiss into the palm of your hand. 

“It’s for the best you are,” Kuroro says. “Tomorrow I will find time in our schedules for us to take a walk, how does that sound?” 

“A long walk?” 

“A long walk.” 

Your fingers trace Kuroro’s jaw. “Why not tonight? Why not now?” 

“You are not dressed for a walk,” Kuroro says softly. “And you need to get ready for dinner. We do not have time for a walk right now, sweet [First.]” 

“Oh.” Your fingers stop their movements, and you withdraw your hand. 

“Would you like me to walk you to your room?” Kuroro asks. 

“Will you stay while I get ready?” You hope. 

Kuroro sadly shakes his head. “I can go get you something from the kitchen and come back while delivering it.”

“So yes?” You conclude. 

“In a way,” Kuroro says, standing. He holds his hand out for you to take, which you gladly do. 

You look around you, double checking for your solitude. The door would have been audible had it opened. 

“Do you think I could have a kiss?” You whisper. 

“A kiss?” Kuroro hums. Slowly, he lowers his head until his breath mingles with yours. 

“Please?” 

“You should never have to ask for anything,” Kuroro responds, sealing his statement with a solid yet brief press of his lips against yours. “It is cruel that you want what you can’t have.”

There is no second kiss, just a hand on your cheek and Kuroro’s steady breath. A whine leaves your lips. 

Slowly, you open your eyes to look at him. “One more?” 

He obliges, slotting your lips together. The kiss lasts for a breath longer, his tongue gently swiping against your bottom lip before pulling away. 

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to kiss anyone else,” You murmur. 

Kuroro chuckles at that. “I’m sure you’ll kiss many more.” 

You shake your head. “I don’t wish to.” 

“You flatter me,” Kuroro murmurs, “When it should be the other way around.”

This turn, you hum, a little smile flickering across your lips. You pull away, out of the fear that built inside you from the amount of private time you’d had. Someone was bound to come for you any moment. 

Greedily, Kuroro steals another kiss before leading you out of the room. It’s a cold walk down the halls, shoes echoing on the stone, a distinct space left between both of you. The wind from your walk whips through it. The more distance put between yourself and the library, the larger the space becomes. And, as you round the corner of the hall, you can no longer feel the lingering warmth against your lips.

The days stretched into weeks, and the weeks into months, each one passing with an agonizing slowness. The war raged on, casting a long shadow over every aspect of life. The drawing room, once filled with laughter and warmth, now felt cold and empty. You spent countless hours there, clutching the extra book of poems, the same one you had given Alexei, reading and rereading the familiar verses, drawing solace from the thought that perhaps, somewhere far away, he was doing the same.

The letters you received from him were infrequent, but each one was a lifeline, a beacon of hope in the darkness. You cherished every word, holding them close to your heart. But then, one day, the letters stopped coming. Days turned into weeks without any letter.

One evening, as the sun set, casting a golden hue across the room, there was a knock at the door. Your heart leapt with a mixture of hope and dread. You rushed to open it, only to be met by a somber-faced officer, his uniform marked with the dust and grime of the battlefield.

"Are you Miss (Your Name)?" he asked gently.

You nodded, your throat too tight to speak.

"I am Lieutenant Sergei Ivanov," he said softly. "I served alongside Count Alexei Vronsky."

Your heart clenched painfully at the past tense, and you clung to the doorframe for support. "Is he...?"

The lieutenant took a deep breath, his eyes filled with sorrow. "I'm afraid I bring grievous news. Alexei Vronsky fought bravely, but he... he did not survive the last battle."

The world seemed to tilt, and you felt as though you might collapse. Tears streamed down your face as the reality of his words sank in. "No," you whispered, shaking your head. "He promised... he promised he would come back."

Lieutenant Ivanov reached into his coat and pulled out the small book of poems you had given Alexei, along with a dried up small flower tucked in between the pages. "He carried this with him always," he said, handing it to you. "He spoke of you often, your love giving him strength. He wanted you to have this, to remember him by."

You took the book, clutching it to your chest, your tears falling onto its worn cover. The promise that had once given you hope now felt like a cruel reminder of what had been lost. "Thank you," you managed to say, your voice breaking.

The lieutenant nodded, his own eyes glistening with unshed tears. "He was a good man, and a brave soldier. He will be missed by many." He paused, then added softly, "I'm so sorry for your loss."

After he left, you sank to the floor, the book held tightly in your hands. The pain of his absence was overwhelming, a deep ache that seemed to pierce your very soul. You opened the book, the familiar verses blurring through your tears. One poem, where the flower is located, caught your eye, a favorite of both yours and Alexei's:

"Love is a flame that burns in the heart,

Even when parted, never to depart.

Though shadows may fall and hopes may wane,

Love's light endures, beyond the pain."

You read the lines over and over, finding a bittersweet comfort in them. You twirl the flower in between your fingers as you read. Though Alexei was gone, his love remained, a constant presence in your heart. The promise he made, though shattered by the cruelty of war, still held a truth: his memory would live on, and his love would be a guiding light in the darkness.

In the days and months that followed, you clung to that love, finding strength in the memories you had shared. The pain of his loss never fully faded, but you carried on, living your life as he would have wanted you to. And every night, as you read from the book of poems and look at the small flower on the bedside table, you felt his presence beside you, a reminder that love, even in the face of the deepest sorrow, endures.

She has been married to Alexei Karenin, an influential member of the Association, for a long time and is raising her son Sergei with him. On a trip to another District, she meets Alexei Vronsky, a high-ranking Fixer. Tired of the monotonous family life with Karenin, she decides to have an affair with Vronsky and the feelings lost with Karenin awaken in her again. For a long time they managed to keep their relationship a secret, but soon everyone learns of the affair, all her and her husband's entourage turns against Anna, and her husband tries to keep the woman close to him and does not give her permission to divorce. Later, she learns that she is pregnant. During childbirth, she almost dies and consequently gets seriously ill, causing Karenin to forgive her and Vronsky nevertheless. However, after recovery, Anna takes her newborn daughter and runs away with her lover to another District. Sergei remains with his father. Living in four walls, as if in prison, and jealous of Vronsky to every new acquaintance, she almost goes mad, and her daughter Anya and can not love at all. Her moral state is also destroyed by the broken promise of her husband - he vowed that he would give her son Seryozha, but at the last moment he changes his mind and takes him out of her hands. Vronsky, unable to tolerate her hysterics, leaves for his relatives in another district, but Karenina immediately cannot bear the loneliness and goes after him. At the station she realises the hopelessness of the situation and throws herself under the train. Alexei, who did not have time to leave, still managed to save her, but her beloved loses her legs. From the hospital he will never be able to take her away. She is considered missing. Character: Anna is an honest, open, sincere woman who becomes entangled in a complicated and deceitful relationship with her husband. Despite her attempts to resist passion, she still drowns in love with Vronsky, for which she blames herself, calling herself a "Fallen Woman". She is graceful, agile, decisive and sweet to others. To find an approach to people helps her to find the simplicity of her soul, because of which she became the "senior" in the team. To many of her colleagues she simply can not treat indifferently, and therefore is always a welcome participant in conversations and small meals. Facts: -None of Anna's Identities have legs. -Anna's weapon was a fan with a poisoned blade, but she herself begged to be taught how to use her prosthetics as weapons. -Anna has a liking for several members of the team. -Source: Leo Tolstoy - "Anna Karenina"

Ranking Anna Karenina Characters Best to Worst

Lvov- He shows up for like 3 pages to show all the other men how it's done. He just swans in and is humble and kind and a good father and then is never seen again.

Varenka- She's an angel and we're lucky to have her

Kitty- Kitty has done nothing wrong ever.

Darya- She's just trying her best and deserves so much better than her husband.

Prince Stcherbatsky- Seems like a good dad, and he immediately didn't like Vronsky so that's a plus

Levin- He's a little confused but he's got the spirit. If nothing else, he loves his wife and thinks cheating is wrong which is a big win for this book. And he goes through actual character growth.

Alexey Karenin- He's not great but he's trying and he repeatedly gets treated absolutely awfully. And he cares about Annie in a way that's quite sweet.

Sergey Ivanovitch- Just sorta there. Very neutral. If he'd married Varenka that would be a different story.

Lidia- She'd be better if she ditched the psychic, but also she's the only one with any sympathy for Karenin.

Nikolay- you feel bad for him more than you dislike him, but fundamentally he IS a jerk

Veslovsky- Stop. Flirting. With. Married. Women. They're ALL uncomfortable.

Betsy- Actively encourages Anna to have an affair but then as soon as it becomes public won't be seen with her.

Vronsky- He's a Wickham.

Anna- She just goes on about how she hates her husband for being a good man and can't stand to be around him and no matter how he reacts to her affair she's like 'he did this to hurt me because he's cruel' like she's not the one causing all this and also about how she 'can't' love her daughter. And then she wants people to pity how hard life is for her because she doesn't love her daughter and hates her husband. The absolute villain of this story.

Stepan Arkadyvitch- Not only does he cheat on his wife REPEATEDLY (and is the kind of guy to be like 'well it's natural for men to cheat. we're not built for monogamy'. ) and drive his family into debt, but he's also still manages to weasel his way into everyone's good graces and push them toward making the worst choices. Should have been the one to fall in front of a train so at least Darya could have remarried and found someone decent.
