I know your also a fan of cuphead so I think you might have seen the 3rd season. Right well I am asking what’s your opinion on the episode where the bear tells cuphead and his family to not leave food sitting out?
I honestly think it’s hilarious seeing a wild animal (especially since when I was 10 years old I went camping in California’s sequoia national park if staying in a cabin counts) tell them no leaving your food out lol

Day 19-21
Moving day
Road Trip AU cont’d
They were sitting in some greasy diner next to each other after the map mixup. They both got a little testy but he liked the fact that he could lose his temper and she could take it. And honestly she gave it back equally. Fast forward to now, Keith was trying to focus on what Shiro was saying on the phone but how could he? Her bare leg was actually touching his leg. Granted his shorts were in the way but he couldn’t take his gaze off it. Keith could feel the heat and he wished they were in a position where he could just put his hand on her leg or hold her hand.
Pidge however was intent on listening to Shiro explaining how the move was going. He could hear the underlying tension in her voice. He focused on her rather than Shiro for now. But he could wait. He’s waited this long, what was a few more hours. More importantly he needed to be there for her.
They were eating dinner now, and he didn’t know what to do. How could he bring up what he figured was the reason for this roadtrip? He knew her. Hell he’d observed her for years. Admiring her intellect, logical thinking and tactician. But more than that he admired her determination and fierce loyalty. He wanted that. He wanted to be part of that. But more than wanting, he needed it. And he could be obsessive when it came to his goals.
Matt was moving out. He was leaving. He knew Pidge’s foundation was shaken. They were closer than he was with anyone. He figured she was wondering what she was going to do? Basically Matt was her rock for basically her whole life. It was stupid, but he wanted to slide into that position for her. He wanted to be her rock, her foundation, he wanted to be her person. He knew she was probably scared of being alone. God knows he used to be. But lucky for her, she was not alone any more.
Day 20. Campfire/camping
They drove to a few more cities and crossed things off of Pidge’s list. She knew Keith was more of a rough it kind of guy and when they couldn’t find a hotel she decided to be nice and see if they could find a cabin available at a campground. Which they did. BUT she didn’t really think it through all the way, because in the hotels they had separate rooms. But here, there were in a one room tiny house cabin.
Basically there was no privacy. But it did have internet so, it wasn’t all bad. But she felt a little weird sharing a bathroom and well, there was one bed. She knew she was probably overthinking it because it was Keith. She wouldn’t have thought twice if it was Matt, Lance or Hunk. But, it wasn’t them. It was KEITH!!! KOGANE!!!
She heard the girls giggling about him when she was in high school. Same for the Garrison. And really who could blame them, he was totally hot. Just not her type. At all. He was hot tempered. Blunt. Oblivious. She bet he didn’t even watch anime. And despite all that she was flustered. It was pretty cozy so when Keith asked if she wanted to make a campfire she quickly agreed. As she watched him set up the campfire wood according to the camp’s directives so there would be no stray sparks she couldn’t help but think of that one bed. UGH!
Day 21. National park
Keith got up early, forcing himself out of the bed and plotted course to their next stop, Sequoia National Park. Keith didn’t want to push Pidge’s boundaries any more then he needed to. He definitely didn’t want to take a step back. After talking and having a few drinks by the campfire he felt brave enough to suggest that they just share the bed. As friends.
He thought for sure she was going to yell at him. He knows if her brother found out he’d have his head. But damn it was worth it. It wasn’t even like anything happened. They started off with Pidge under the blankets and he was on top. But sometime over night he must have gotten under to and when he woke up, he had one arm around her waist, with his hand firmly in her waist band of her sleep shorts. His other arm was under he neck. After he got himself under control he very carefully got out of bed. His next plan was to see if they could just get one room in the hotels from now on. There was as strange intimacy of sharing a bathroom and room.
He knew she was absentminded and sloppy which he knew she thought he’d get mad at. But honestly, he didn’t mind tidying up after her. It felt like he was taking care of her. Shaking his head, he used her laptop to see when the park opened, how much it was per car and plan out a route. He knew she wasn’t much for hiking but this park you could drive around, park and hike parts.
He also made some coffee and tidied up the car. He looked up when she opened the door, “Keith, I told you to wake me up! I don’t have to sleep in all the time. Promise.”
He nodded, “It’s no big deal, I was organizing and planing our trip. Do you want to drive or should I?”
She grinned, “We are going through mountains and I know the elevation rises sharply. I think I feel much more comfortable with you taking those risks!”
He grinned, “As you wish.”

News Flash: Family Travel Doesn’t Even Require a Passport
Passport free affordable family travel inspiration that will get you to actually leave the house with your kids.
Often times, I have parents ask me for advice regarding travel with children and I remind them that international travel is not the only way to expose and share experiences with your kids. I’m well aware that if you search the hashtag #travel or #familytravel, you will come across many staged and photoshopped images of what seems like perfectly behaved jet setting families in Paris, Malasia, Kenya, Greece and every international Disney Park, yet I’m here for the family who’s trying to figure out how to pull off a simple in state road trip, overnight trip or weekend adventure. While we love exploring so many amazing places that are ideal family travel locations, I’m also all about the local and regional travel experiences. Why? It’s more realistic that the average family will be able to plan, afford and actually pull off an overnight trip or weekend getaway, than a safari or two week long trip through Europe. Realistic and affordable family travel is imperative to breaking the obstacles to family travel for most people.
Family travel is not something we do to simply check off a box, say that we’ve been there and because it’s currently the trendy thing to do. We were those lone black people hiking, camping, skiing and in typically not family orientated travel destinations, before family travel became the “in” thing. It’s been an integral part of our family values and way of life for over nineteen years. This means that we place as much emphasis on the experiences and lessons learned while taking a day trip to Block Island, Rhode Island or a weekend trip to Acadia National Park, Maine, as we do on our trip to Havana, Cuba. Travel is truly as much about the process of getting to the destination, as it is about experiencing said destination with our children. What do I mean? Children who grow up to be adults who love adventure and experiences are born in transit. They are born in their ability to pack their bags, organize the car, plan their trip and live in the moment once they arrive. They’re born in the ability to make the most out of the unexpected or hiccups in their plans, without those challenges completely ruining their trip.
These lessons can be learned without even owning a passport, a car or the funds to take you on that bucket list trip. You don’t need to have TSA Pre Check, Global Entry or Mobile Passport to raise travel loving and adventure seeking children. You can accomplish these goals by teaching your kids how to explore their own back yard, state, region and country. The United States or your own home country are filled with incredibly beautiful places just waiting for you to experience them. I challenge you to rethink the passport stamp seeking family travel culture that we’re bombarded with daily on social media and you will realize that it’s not as unattainable as you once thought. Even as a family travel blogger, I find myself rolling my eyes at some of the elitists posts that I see on social media these days. I’m here to tell you that it’s perfectly okay if your kids don’t leave the country until they have their first job and can afford to buy their own flight. While we do travel internationally with our four children, I must acknowledge that international travel is not something that is immediately available to most families with two children, much less those with four. I encourage you to start traveling with your kids by choosing trips that meet your personal family budget. Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s paralyzing.
The older I get, the more I appreciate a good long weekend family trip. I don’t have the attention span for most 7-day trips with kids. I love long weekends and 5-night trips because they allow our family to create amazing memories while not completely disrupting our daily flow, routine and wallet. Also, as a large family, lodging, food and transportation costs add up quickly. I’d rather travel more often, than travel longer in one single trip. This is our family’s preference and you will figure out your own family travel flow, the more you get out of the house with your kids. I’ve written previous blog posts about the fact that family travel is not a vacation. It requires a shift in thinking and an acceptance to what your reality is as a parent leaving the house with children. It’s a fact. You will have to put in all of the work required to parent on a daily basis while you are away from home. Travel will only accentuate your troublesome family dynamics. Ugh, sorry I had to say that! It’s reality. I’ve spoken to so many parents who say that they don’t travel with their kids because their kids don’t listen, misbehave and thus damper their travel experience. Those are issues that I highly recommend that you address and deal with before you embark on a week long trip with children. Traveling didn’t cause these issues, but having kids out of their element accentuates all of those things to a degree that will cause you to never leave home again. Thus, be realistic in your travel expectations with children. You may be in a season that requires shorter trips. Embrace that. The season of longer travel will be here before you know it.
Don’t be paralyzed by all of the family travel posts to expensive travel destinations, that leave you feeling inadequate, despondent and slightly depressed. Start somewhere. Start Local. Start now. You won’t regret it and in the meantime, you’ll be planting those seeds that you will surely sow at the right time in your family’s lifetime. These are some of our favorite family travel destinations that hopefully will get your wanderlust juices flowing. I bet some of these are close enough to you that you can make a long weekend out of them.

What are some of your favorite affordable family travel destinations? What are some of the obstacles that you face in starting to travel with your kids?
Pro tips for affordable local family travel:
- Travel off season. Island destinations like Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard are just as stunning, more affordable and less crowded in the off season. Ski resorts make amazing Spring, Summer and Fall destinations. Off season travel also mean that you won’t face minimum night requirements and thus allow you to take a weekend trip rather than a full week.
- If you have young children and don’t need to work around a school schedule, hotels are cheaper on Sunday nights and mid week. Avoid Friday and Saturday nights unless traveling to business destinations and then weekends are actually less expensive at some of the really nice business hotels.
- Brand loyalty does pay off. If you do stay in hotels, follow the deals and not the destinations. Also, stick to one brand and sign up immediately for their rewards programs. Many of our annual hotel stays are free nights using rewards.
- Don’t be afraid to book Airbnb’s. As a large family, we often book condos and full houses at a significantly cheaper rate than a hotel stay.
- I use Costco often for car rentals. They offer the best deals for vehicles that can accommodate our family.
- Be flexible and creative in your lodging options. We’ve stayed outside of beach towns for 1/4 of the cost of staying on the beach. Flexibility in family travel is key to actually going anywhere.
- Be willing to try new things. We’ve stayed in cabins, RVs and tent camped. I honestly never pictured myself having some of the amazing experiences that we’ve shared with our children. To think that I may have missed these memories if I stuck to that which I was comfortable with.

Writing Sample: Sustainable Revenue OOG: Hipcamp
Through various interviews, we uncovered another goal that Dr. Adest has for his ranch is to generate sustainable revenue sources with limited environmental consequences. One method that Dr. Adest discovered is an online platform called HipCamp. This site allows landowners to list their cabins and camping spots for reservations to outdoor enthusiasts ("Getting more people outside", n.d.). The usage data of Dr. Adest’s HipCamp sites were graciously offered for this research. He has listed nine different HipCamp spots located throughout his property over the past four years since he started with HipCamp. Dr. Adest has chosen not to enlist some or all of his spots when his land is facing an environmental extremity such as drought for the purpose of alleviating the burden on the land. The goal of this OOG is to improve revenue from HipCamp by ten percent in the most productive year. This OOG will be different for landowners and depend on how they manage their HipCamp sites.
Our interviews with Dr. Adest showcased the factors that go into running a working ranch while focusing on restoration. The goal of opening the land to outdoor enthusiasts is to bring in income to replace cattle ranching on the ranch. HipCamp is one of the 10 of the sources of income Dr. Adest has set up on the ranch. The drivers of the OOG are the variables that entice people to reserve campsites and cabins. One driver is location; the proximity of River Ridge Ranch to Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and other outdoor recreational spaces. According to Dr. Adest, his HipCamp sites provide space for outdoor enthusiasts when popular campsites within the national parks are fully booked. While these national parks are some of the most visited, weather conditions tend to control the amount of visitors that River Ridge Ranch sees. During the spring and summer seasons, River Ridge Ranch sees more reservations than the winter. Finally, the amenities on River Ridge Ranch are also drivers for HipCamp bookings. Many national park sites are crowded and do not offer things like showers, bathrooms, wifi, and in some cases AC/heating. These three drivers and more are reasons why Dr. Adest has been able to make nearly 100,000 dollars in four years. Almost 900 bookings have taken place in River Ridge, and each booking leaves a footprint on the land.
The constraints of this OOG focus on the obstacles of using HipCamp as a source of income. Conservation easements, seasonality, and land degradation are mentioned as constraints for using HipCamp as a source of revenue. A conservation easement limits the amount of campsites and cabins that landowners can build on their land, in turn limiting reservations and revenue. Seasons and their accompanying weather also affect the popularity of camping. July and August experience the highest number of reservations, shown in Graph 1. This figure shows the total count of bookings per month for the cumulative years since Dr. Adest began. For example, the month of May corresponds with a count of 88 bookings between the years of 2017 and 2021. A third constraint is the effect that camping and visitors have on land degradation. It may disturb the landscape and result in temporary or permanent unwanted changes to the land through persistent use of land and resources, and possible damage to property. For example, persistent use of land can lead to changes in the land such as the creation of trails, introduction of invasive species, and movement of wildlife; amongst other effects. To bring in the most revenue, land managers must find equilibrium with the use of land to preserve its enjoyment for future visitors.
To monitor how HipCamp could affect the landscape, there are several monitoring systems in place that can lead to relebations. With a continuous partnership with CSULB, students can continue to monitor changes on River Ridge Ranch. With ongoing monitoring projects like soil sampling and animal waste collection students can uncover changes in the landscape. Sampling soils twice a year can uncover invasive seeds, changes in bulk density and other signs of degradation that can be linked to HipCamp bookings. By collecting animal waste, students can see the distribution of animals throughout the ranch. They can aslo map their movements over time. For example, if fox waste begins to move to higher elevations, this could hint that HipCamp bookings and human presence have something to do with their movement. To tie everything back to making revenue through HipCamp while keeping sustainability in mind, a bi-annual cost benefit analysis could be a powerful monitoring system. HipCamp booking information and data from the monitoring systems in place can be used to create a cost benefit analysis. The cost benefit analysis asks a tough question; does the revenue outweigh the land degradation from continuous use? Using the cost-benefit analysis, Dr. Adest and other stakeholders can come to a decision to continue, expand, or contract HipCamp on River Ridge Ranch.

Friday May 28 | Sequoia National Park
Our hike through the groves was somewhere between 7-9 miles. The area is so dense with attractions between the various named trees and groves, vibrant meadows, scenic overlooks, and old pioneering cabins that it was hard to pick a route that captured as many sites as possible. We followed a route on AllTrails with some modifications that I think hit most of the highlights. It took us through the Sherman Tree area, along the popular Congress Trail, over the less populated and slightly more challenging Trail of the Sequoias, and through the Crescent Meadow/Tharp’s Log trail before returning through Giant Forest along the Circle Meadow Loop and finally finishing along the second half of the Congress trail.
While popular, the Congress Trail is great if you’re just passing through: we saw the clusters of sequoias known as “The Senate”, I ate my morning granola bar under “The President”, and brought home little sequoia pine cones from it and nearby “Chief Sequoyah”. After enjoying the solitude, being dwarfed by fallen tree roots, and sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada mountains along the Trail of the Sequoias we rejoined more hikers and walked inside Tharp’s Log, a dwelling created from a fallen sequoia and ate lunch along Tharp’s Meadow. After lunch we saw the hollowed out chimney tree, admired even more trees in the aptly named Giant Forest, and peeked inside the Old Cattle Cabin, which was built in 1890.

After finishing our hike which was gratifyingly tiring but not as exhausting as our big days in Inyo or Yosemite, we spent the rest of the afternoon sightseeing and traveling by car. We detoured off General’s highway once more to drive under the well known Tunnel Log, carved out in the 1930s. We drove the one way loop twice to really get the full experience. On the way out, we stopped briefly at Auto Log, a sequoia that fell on a gentle angle in 1917 and was made famous by the photos of automobiles on the top of it. You can still walk on the log, but the closest cars can get these days is the nearby parking lot. If we had taken Crescent Meadow road all the way to the end, we would have been quite close to the Tharp Meadow area we hiked through earlier in the day, and it would have been a good alternative parking spot to do the same loop hike if we hadn’t made it to the General Sherman area early in the day, starting instead at the High Sierra Trailhead/Crescent Meadow Picnic area instead. Things to remember for next time, which I sincerely hope there is, because both Stephen and I would have really enjoyed having more time to camp, hike, and explore among the giants here and there were so many trails on my list of trip planning ideas that we didn’t have time for this go around.

Choosing a National Park to Visit
Choosing Which National Park to Visit: a Guest Post by Emily Burton
Visiting all the parks in the National Park System is a worthy lifetime goal, but with 419 parks managed by the National Park Service, it’s best to have a plan of action. One way to approach this goal is from east to west or state-by-state. A more interesting way, however, alternates among parks with different assets. With continual variety, you won’t get lulled into a sense of complacency at yet another gorgeous mountain range.
Yellowstone National Park
It makes sense to start your park adventure off with a bang at the granddaddy of national parks – Yellowstone. This 3400 square mile parcel of land across three states was set aside by President Grant in 1872. It boasts the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem which supports hundreds of mammals including bison, wolves and grizzly bears. There are nine different lodges or cabins available as well as camping sites. Because Yellowstone is so large, you can drive close to most viewing areas. With so many lodging and dining services, Yellowstone makes a comfortable first park experience for the entire family.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
On a different note, Guadalupe Mountains National Park in West Texas offers 86 miles of hiking trails, incredible views and little in the way of amenities. One of the best ways to get ready for an intense national park experience like this one is to get in shape before you go by embarking on a fitness plan with the best Thrive side effects that helps you feel energetic and raring to go. Not only are there no hotels in this park, but you can’t even make reservations for the campsites. In other words, you must be committed to the incredible sunsets, stargazing and colors of fall foliage (if you go in autumn – which you should). There are moderate day hikes through high-walled canyons and up to mountain peaks. There are numerous gorgeous hike-in backpacking sites such as McKittrick Ridge where you must pack in and pack out everything.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park
Once you’ve explored the desert floor and mountain top views in Texas, you might be yearning for the tall trees of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in California. These adjacent parks have been managed together for decades and share five distinct areas worthy of your time. You can hike to the first and second largest trees in the world. Do not miss the two-mile loop trail through the Giant Forest sequoia grove. You can stay outside the park or at Bearpaw High Sierra Camp in the park which features a tent city complete with food, showers and beds.
Voyageurs National Park
Variety is the spice of life, so after your tree-ific visit to California, head to northern Minnesota and Voyageurs National Park, made up mostly of lakes. The best way to access all this beautiful park has to offer is via canoe, rowboat or even houseboat. If you don’t happen to own your own houseboat, there is camping and one lodge in the park, Kettle Falls Hotel, that’s only accessible by boat. If you decide to brave Minnesota in the winter, instead of fishing and kayaking, you can go cross-country skiing or snowmobiling over the frozen lakes.
Acadia National Park
Just to make sure you’re being geographically well-rounded, for your next stop, consider the lovely Acadia National Park in Maine. This singleton park in the Northeastern United States really has it all: mountains, ocean coastline, forests, lakes, and wetlands. The self-proclaimed “Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast” offers plenty to do and see and is just down the road from the cutest little town of Bar Harbor from which to set up your home base. One unique feature of this park is the Artist-in-Residence program which offers free housing to an artist in exchange for artistic public outreach programs and donated artwork highlighting Acadia.
If you visit six national parks a year, it will take you 70 years to get through the entire parks system. A better plan might be to choose a variety of parks across the United States and its territories so that you get a sense of the vastness and variety of the landscapes across this great country.

Camping Essentials Checklist - What To Take Camping in the Sequoias
For your first primitive camping experience, it's probably best to prepare a weekend journey to a state park or national park near to where you live. From there, you can develop to longer journeys, week long backpacking or bike packing trips, and even month long ones. Most state parks, nationwide forests, and recreation locations enable what they call "dispersed" outdoor camping, or backcountry outdoor camping, indicating you may camp outside of the designated areas as long as you follow a couple of basic rules.
Do not reduce trees, or perhaps branches from the trees. Guidelines for primitive outdoor camping depend on the state you're in. For instance, New york city requires primitive campers to establish camp at least 150 feet from a body of water, road, or path. Make certain to check you state's law and policies when planning your journey.
" My alternative to using pro would be to drive back out to cell service." As mentioned before, backcountry outdoor camping is offered at a lot of federally-owned land areasmaking up 28% of the United Statesand comes with a huge bonus: it's most frequently complimentary, depending upon where you camp. Outdoor camping is totally free in numerous national parks, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas Wildlife Management Locations (WMA), and national grasslands.
As long as there are no signs that state "no over night parking" or "day utilize just," it ought to be all right to camp. Water is heavy to bring, however it's also the most essential thing for human survival. Many hiking backpacks have a pocket for a water tank or bladder. Carrying two to 3 liters is generally an enough amount for a basic primitive trip.
The Perfect Camping List For Your Family Los Angeles
Purification systems are essential to your primitive camping checklist. There are a number of methods to filter water. Personally, I have actually utilized the Sawyer capture water system on numerous journeys. This system includes collapsible, reusable mylar pouches that you fill with water. You then screw on the hollow fiber Sawyer filter, then squeeze the pouch to push water through the filter.
The Sawyer filters are lightweight, low tech, and don't take up much room. Another way of filtering water is to utilize filtration tablets. Many of these little tablets need a waiting period, ranging from 15 minutes to 4 hours, once dropped in a water vessel to allow the tablets to ruin viruses found in river or lake water. The Steripen is yet another way to filter water.
This method uses ultraviolet light rays to ruin germs and infections in water. You simply insert the Steripen, press a button, and upset the water with a quick stir. The Steripen cleanses 16 fluid ounces of water in less than a minute, and 32 fluid ounces in 90 seconds. It also turns itself off when water purification is total.
As far as showers go, infant wipes or body wipes will go a long way. There are numerous ranges out there, some of which are biodegradable. I use Goodwipes body wipes and Caboo Bamboo Baby Wipes. I invested three months bike outdoor camping across Central Asia, only remaining in a hotel with a shower as soon as every 7 to 10 days.
The Essential Camping Packing List For Outdoor Adventures Lake Isabella
Most any variety of hypo-allergenic anti-bacterial infant wipes will sufficethough some are more fragrant than others. I need to know, I acquired them in almost every town I travelled through for 10,000 kilometers. You can also rinse off in a stream, river, or lake utilizing naturally degradable soap like Campsuds. Often, an old-fashioned rinsing is all you require to feel revitalized.
In a lot of locations, as long as you bury your waste, you ought to be fine. A little trowel for digging must permit you to effectively bury your waste. Make certain to dig at least 200 lawns from the camping area, trail or water source. Dig a hole 6 to 8 inches deep, then fill it in when you're done.
Out in the backcountry, the sun is your good friend and your power source. There are a variety of photovoltaic panels offered, numerous of which can be connected to your knapsack to collect the sun's energy while you trek, which are a best addition to your primitive outdoor camping checklist if you need the extra power.
If you're out of cell service variety, however, you won't truly require to charge your phone, though. For some added safety, you might desire to think about bringing along a weather condition radio, to alert you of any inbound storm weather condition. Having a long-range walkie talkie with you is another clever resource that you may wish to have if losing cell service could be an issue.
27 Fun Things To Bring Camping - Crow Survival Sequoias
There are all kinds of solar powered lights and lamps offered for use inside and outside your camping tent. Biolite also makes a camp stove that transforms fire into energy that will power a light or charge a phone or GPS device. Regrettably, there are no Walmarts, Targets or corner store out on the trail or in the middle of a forest.
They're lightweight, compact, filled with calories, and simple to prepare. Simply include boiling water and, presto, you're obtained a tasty meal. Delicious may be a relative measure, however lots of camp meals will definitely please your cravings after a day of treking. Like whatever these days, there are numerous alternatives readily available.
Freeze died meals aren't the cheapest method to go if you're backpacking for extended time periods. Other less costly alternatives include mashers, pasta sides, and the food of option for bad college students all over: ramen. Primitive outdoor camping is not a specific science. Things alter. Weather takes place. No matter how prepared or experienced you might be, sometimes mom nature will throw you a curve ball.
And taking pleasure in the heck out of it. I tend to overthink things. A lot. During the 3 months I spent camping in Central Asia, I 'd often spend a good half hour to hour strolling around at our picked location to invest the night searching for the best spot to pitch my tent. kern river camping reservations.
What To Bring - Camping (U.s. National Park Service) Lake Isabella
Here are a couple of things to remember when selecting a site. 1. The flatter the website, the much better. If you are camping on an incline, place your tent so that when you rest, your head will be on the higher ground. 2. Make sure there are no sharp rocks, branches, pinecones, or other debris that may pierce through your tent.
3. While it's great to be near a stream, river, or lake, if you're in a state forest in the U.S., policy requires you set up a minimum of 150 feet from the banks. Also, it's constantly possible that it could rain and the water level might increase enough to flood over the banks and into your camping tent (vacation trailer rentals).

After years of exploring all over Yosemite on numerous backpacking trips, I’ve learned two lessons about it: Few places possess Yosemite’s breadth and variety of scenery and inspire the same powerful sense of adventure. And its backcountry harbors such an abundance of soaring granite peaks, jagged skylines, rushing creeks, waterfalls, and shimmering alpine lakes—plus, over 700,000 acres of designated wilderness and 750 miles of trails—that you can take many, many trips in America’s third national park without running out of five-star scenery.
There’s only one Yosemite, and it unquestionably belongs on any list of the best national park backpacking trips.
Mark Fenton scaling Half Dome’s cable route in Yosemite.
This article describes the five best backpacking trips in Yosemite, based on my numerous trips exploring every quadrant of the park, from the core between Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows—including Half Dome—to the John Muir Trail, the Clark Range and southeast corner, and the vast wilderness of northern Yosemite. These trips range in length from three to four days and roughly 30 miles (with shorter options) to more than a week and nearly 90 miles, and from beginner friendly to serious, committing adventures into the park’s farthest reaches, demanding good fitness and skills.
Each trip described below includes a link to a story about it that provides more detail (reading those stories requires a paid subscription; click here to learn more about subscribing), and each also has a link to one of my e-guides describing that trip. Look at a trail map of the park while reading these descriptions, and you will see that the extensive trail system allows for variations on these routes—longer and shorter, and even combining all or parts of these routes.
Yosemite exceeds expectations in many ways, including this truth: Its reputation for crowds just doesn’t square with the reality of backpacking throughout most of the park. Yes, Yosemite Valley sees insane numbers of tourists, and a few of the park’s trails—like the Mist Trail and Half Dome—are among the most popular in the country. But wander into the park’s vast backcountry and you will find vistas that conjure the Valley, along with a surprising degree of solitude.
Half Dome, Liberty Cap, and Nevada Fall, along the route of “The Best First Backpacking Trip in Yosemite.” Click on photo to learn more about this hike.
Backpack in Yosemite and you will also connect with the history of America’s conservation movement and an idea that changed the world. In a real sense, this is where the 84-million-acre National Park System began.
In 1864, eight years before the designation of Yellowstone as the world’s first national park, President Abraham Lincoln signed a law granting Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias to the state of California—making them the first lands protected purely for scenic value. Yosemite became America’s third national park in 1890. Walk for days through the backcountry and you will understand what inspired John Muir and others to persuade the nation’s leaders and the public that America must preserve some places in an untarnished, natural state.

Understanding Yosemite’s Backcountry Permit System
Yosemite National Park issues free backcountry permits under a somewhat unique system based on trailhead quotas—allowing a specific number of backpackers to start their trip at each trailhead every day. For some of the most-popular trailheads—including Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley and most of the trailheads in the Tuolumne Meadows area and along Tioga Road—those quotas are often filled the first day that the park begins accepting permit reservations, which is up to 24 weeks (168 days) before a hike’s starting date. (For example, to start a trip in late July, submit your application in early February.)
But you may also be able to get a permit a day prior to starting a trip. For each trailhead, 60 percent of available permits can be reserved in advance, but the remaining 40 percent are available only on a first-come, first-served basis no earlier than 11 a.m. the day before starting a hike. Learn the tricks for getting a permit in Yosemite and other popular parks in my “10 Tips For Getting a Hard-to-Get National Park Backcountry Permit.”

Planning your first backpacking trip in Yosemite and want to hit all the famous highlights—on a route that’s also beginner-friendly? Take this 37.2-mile hike from Happy Isles Trailhead in Yosemite Valley. It loops through the core of the park, including the Mist Trail past 317-foot Vernal Fall and 594-foot Nevada Fall, the cable route up Half Dome, the spectacular summit of Clouds Rest, a section of the John Muir Trail, and a view of the Cathedral Range from your campsite at Sunrise.
This may be the most popular backpacking trip in Yosemite; it starts from the most popular trailhead, Happy Isles, and includes at least one night at the most popular backcountry campground, Little Yosemite Valley. Expect a lot of competition for this permit and plan alternative routes in case you don’t get it.
Read more about this hike in my blog post “Ask Me: Where to Backpack First Time in Yosemite,” and find detailed information on how to pull it off, including variations of this route and insider tips in getting a permit for it, in my e-guide “The Best First Backpacking Trip in Yosemite.” See also my tips on hiking Half Dome.

Backpackers hiking to Vogelsang Pass in Yosemite National Park.
Tuolumne Meadows to Tenaya Lake
The roughly 30-mile traverse from the Rafferty Creek Trailhead at the eastern end of Tuolumne Meadows to the Sunrise Lakes Trailhead at Tenaya Lake features not only those two amazing spots, but the panorama of mountains from Vogelsang Pass, the beautiful canyon of the Merced River, the view of the Cathedral Range from Sunrise, and relatively quiet sections of trail.
This hike passes three of the park’s High Sierra Camps— Vogelsang, Merced Lake, and Sunrise—where you can stay in tent cabins and have all meals prepared for you, or stay in DIY backpacker campgrounds. This route is popular because it’s relatively accessible, scenic, and offers the convenience of using the free shuttle buses that operate between trailheads throughout the Tuolumne area.
This is described as an alternative route in my e-guide “The Best First Backpacking Trip in Yosemite,” which provides a wealth of information on how to prepare for and take a backpacking trip in Yosemite.

The Clark Range and Southeast Yosemite
This 65-mile hike south of Tuolumne Meadows is arguably the best trip in the park for backpackers who are ready for a remote wilderness trek but still want to tag some iconic, must-see landmarks like thunderous, 594-foot-tall Nevada Fall and two of Yosemite’s best summits: Half Dome high above Yosemite Valley, and Clouds Rest, with a 360-degree panorama from its nearly 10,000-foot summit that encompasses most of the park.
It shows off granite domes and peaks in places like Tuolumne and Vogelsang and crosses Red Peak Pass in the Clark Range—the highest pass reached by a trail in Yosemite—and the granite basins and tarns, lakes, and creeks at the headwaters of the Merced River.
I wrote about this trip in my feature story “Best of Yosemite, Part 1: Backpacking South of Tuolumne Meadows,” which has many photos and a video as well as trip-planning information. The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park.
The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River
Think of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River as a wilderness version of Yosemite Valley—without the roads, buildings, cars, and throngs of people—that’s twice as long. The Tuolumne River plunges through innumerable waterfalls and swimming holes between towering walls of granite, and the trail variously follows the river and climbs high above it. With a shuttle between trailheads, you can hike the canyon on a three- to four-day traverse of a bit over 30 miles from Tuolumne Meadows to White Wolf (west of Tenaya Lake) via Glen Aulin; or in the other direction, White Wolf to Tuolumne.
The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River.
Or hike from Tuolumne Meadows down as far as you like into the canyon, then turn around and retrace your steps back out. That option is not only logistically easier, but it allows you to backpack partway down the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, grab one of the many great campsites for two nights, and dayhike farther down the canyon with a light pack on your middle day. If you hike from Tuolumne Meadows all the way to Pate Valley, at the southern end of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River, and return the same way, the total out-and-back distance is 39 miles.
I wrote about the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne as part of a longer trip in my feature story “Best of Yosemite, Part 2: Backpacking Remote Northern Yosemite,” which has many photos and a video as well as trip-planning information. Backpacking the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne is also included in my e-guide “The Best of Yosemite E-Guide, Part 2: Backpacking Remote Northern Yosemite.”

Northern Yosemite
When you’re ready to explore as deeply into the Yosemite backcountry as a person can wander, this 87-mile trek is the high adventure for you. It follows a meandering route north of Tuolumne Meadows, diving into the park’s biggest, loneliest, and most remote chunk of wilderness.
Its many highlights include the rock gardens of Matterhorn Canyon beneath 12,264-foot Matterhorn Peak; three 10,000-foot passes (including Burro Pass, shown in lead photo at top of story); the sprawling, sandy beach at Benson Lake; the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River; pretty May Lake; and the 10,850-foot summit of Mount Hoffmann, often described as having “the best 360 in Yosemite.” While you are likely to see other backpackers in camps, especially at lakes, northern Yosemite also gifts you with the longest stretches of solitude.
