How is a readymade swimming pool different from a traditional in-ground pool?
A readymade swimming pool, also known as a prefabricated or pre-built pool, differs from a traditional in-ground pool in several ways:
Construction Process: A readymade pool is manufactured off-site in a controlled factory environment. It is pre-designed, fabricated, and transported to the installation site as a complete unit or in large sections. On the other hand, a traditional in-ground pool is built on-site using various construction techniques, such as excavation, forming, and pouring concrete, or using other materials like fiberglass or vinyl.
Installation Time: Readymade pools can be installed relatively quickly compared to traditional in-ground pools. Since they are pre-designed and fabricated, the installation process typically involves preparing the site, leveling the ground, and assembling or placing the pre-built pool structure. In contrast, constructing a traditional in-ground pool involves more complex and time-consuming steps, such as excavation, construction of the pool shell, plumbing, electrical work, and finishing touches. This can take weeks or even months to complete.
Customization Options: Traditional in-ground pools offer a higher degree of customization. They can be tailored to specific shapes, sizes, and features according to the homeowner's preferences and the available space. In contrast, readymade pools come in pre-determined designs and sizes, limiting customization options. While there are various designs available, they may not offer the same level of flexibility as traditional in-ground pools.
Cost: Readymade pools tend to be more cost-effective upfront compared to traditional in-ground pools. Their standardized production and quicker installation process often result in lower labor and construction costs. Traditional in-ground pools, on the other hand, involve more extensive labor and materials, which can make them more expensive.
Portability: Some readymade pools are designed to be portable or semi-permanent. They can be disassembled and relocated if needed. In contrast, traditional in-ground pools are permanent fixtures that are built into the ground and cannot be easily moved.
Lifespan and Durability: Traditional in-ground pools are typically built using durable materials such as concrete or fiberglass, which can provide long-term durability and have a longer lifespan. Readymade pools are also designed to be durable, but the materials used may vary depending on the manufacturer and pool type. It's important to consider the quality of materials and construction when choosing a readymade pool.
Both types of pools have their own advantages and considerations. The choice between a readymade swimming pool and a traditional in-ground pool depends on factors such as budget, customization preferences, installation time, and long-term plans for the pool.

Chapter 00: Prologue
Tumblr media
"I’ve grown a bit taller  My voice has gotten a bit stronger..."
Chapters: Prologue 1 2 3 4 5 6
Ten Years Ago Hwaseong – Gyeonggi Province South Korea
The air was frigid and crisp. There was a feeling of absolute quiet across the vast expanse of tall reeds; half dead while others tried desperately to cling to what life remained in their roots. The occasional crunch of leaves and scuffle of rocks could be heard – ripping through the quiet as the afternoon sun soon sank into the horizon. More undergrowth was crushed underfoot, approaching a certain spot. A destination was set by those same sets of sounds; the distinct sound of sneakers trudging with a purpose but were in no hurry.
A lone figure sat on a large rock near the Hwaseong Riverbank. One leg hung lazily off the edge, the other perched so that an elbow could rest along the knee. His blazer was loose, the tails fanning around his backside just where he sat. A cigarette poked from his full lips as the ember burned silently, flaring a bright orange when a sudden gust of wind would push against him. The sound of the brush being pushed aside began to grow louder but he made no move to face the direction of the noise.
After all, he knew who was coming.
“Namjoon-ah,” came a voice, familiar and deep. Namjoon craned his neck, the cigarette still hanging from his lips. Looking up at him from the ground, the person flashed him a half gummy smile. “You wanna start a fire?”
Namjoon grinned. “Yoongi Hyung.”
Reaching into the inside pocket of his blazer where a crumpled pack of cigarettes were hidden, he tossed them down to Yoongi and he caught them easily. Namjoon watched as the older man lit one of the smokes before clambering up onto the rock beside him. Yoongi handed the pack back to him, exhaling as he leaned back on his hands to look at the sky.
“Those things are going to be the death of you one day,” came Hoseok’s voice from the tall reeds.
They both turned to see Seokjin and Hoseok pushing the honey wheat stalks to the side as they looked up at them.
Seokjin clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth. “Both of you.”
Yoongi made a motion for the two of them to come join them on the rock. Namjoon opened and closed the lid of the Zippo lighter – the soft clinking sound a cadence that helped put him at ease. They clambered onto the rock, Seokjin choosing to stand as he turned his head in either direction – as if he were trying to spy something out. Namjoon caught Yoongi bumping Hoseok’s shoulder, holding the cigarette out to him and he couldn’t help but chuckle at the disgusted expression that painted Hoseok’s face – his dark fringe flying in every direction as he shook his head to decline.
The conversation that bubbled between them was short-lived as another body burst through the reeds, looking winded and as though he’d just gotten finished with a track meet race. Namjoon raised a brow as Jimin’s hair clung to his semi-sweat soaked brow, his hand gripping tightly to his uniform jacket. Yoongi clicked his tongue repeatedly along the back of his teeth, cigarette moving up and down with the gesture. Namjoon was already putting his out on the edge of the rock.
“Sorry I’m late, Hyungs!”
“What took you so long?” Seokjin asked, though everyone knew that he wouldn’t really give Jimin grief about it. “We were waiting here forever.”
Jimin’s smile fell a margin, worry lines creasing his brows. “W-What? Really?”
Seokjin laughed as Hoseok elbowed him in the leg while casting Jimin a reassuring gaze. “We just got here. Don’t listen to him.”
Relief washed over Jimin’s face just as Taehyung came strolling through the brush, bumping his shoulder into Jimin’s playfully. The two of them shared a smirk as Taehyung shoved his hands into the pockets of his uniform pants. The stick of a lollipop poked out the corner of his mouth as he flashed his boxy smile to them; sandalwood tresses falling around his eyes.
“What did I tell you about the sugar, Taehyung-ah?” chided Yoongi, taking a drag of his cigarette. Translucent smoke expelled from his nostrils as their eyes met. Taehyung’s smile dropped as he continued to suck on the candy. “You’re hyper enough without that shit.”
Namjoon watched Taehyung’s boxy smile return almost instantly and he rolled his eyes. “It’s the only way I can stay awake in my classes these days.”
“It’s luck that he’s made it this far,” said Jimin, sighing softly, “and he keeps bugging me to help him with homework all the time.”
Taehyung pulled the sucker from his mouth, blowing a raspberry at Jimin. “I’m not even going to college. Why are they pushing me so hard?” He frowned. “It’s annoying.”
The others cast a sidelong glance toward Namjoon and he shrugged, retrieving another cigarette from his jacket. Spinning the Zippo between his fingers, he lit the end and expelled a half sigh after the first drag. Out of everyone in the group, he was the only one who received a full sponsored scholarship to Seoul University. Like most post-graduate students from high school who were planning to attend college, they usually took a few months off before going to school.
For a year, he’d moved away from Hwaseong and left the rural country life behind. He got to see Seoul in all its splendor and all its glory. There were good and bad things about the big city life. It was crowded, loud and smelled thick with smog. It was the odious stench of a thriving metropolis and where people cared more about themselves than each other. Money talked even more in the city than in the country and there were few people he could trust in the city. Not like in the countryside. Justice was practically laughable, and gangsters walked the streets proudly, as if the law couldn’t touch them. Usually because they couldn’t.
It had been a disgusting year of solitude and study.
He’d missed his brothers.
“So Namjoon Hyung,” cut Taehyung’s voice through his thoughts, “why’d you call us out here anyway? Come to brag about city life to us ignorant country folks?” Even though he was smiling, Namjoon could hear the quiet bitterness nestled in the back of Taehyung’s words.
Hoseok cut his eyes toward Taehyung and snapped his fingers at him. “Watch your damn mouth, Kim Taehyung.”
Taehyung rocked back on his heels in the grass, a few pebbles crunching under his sneakers as he shrugged with his hands still in his pockets. “What?” he asked, closing his eyes as he sucked on his candy for a moment. “Figured he left for the big times and wasn’t planning on coming back. Who can blame him though, right?” His eyes reopened as he looked up at Namjoon just as a column of ash fell off the end of his cigarette. “I wouldn’t come back to this backwater town if I was him, either.”
“Cut it out, Tae Hyung,” came a softer voice in the reeds.
They all turned to see Jungkook appearing through the pale stalks. He looked tired, as if he’d been carrying the weight of their nation on his shoulders. But they all knew what the truth was. The duffel bag hanging from his shoulders as one of the straps of his overalls fell off his arm and the smudge of dirt on his cheek was proof enough. His face looked a little red and sweat dripped from his hair and chin, his work boots scuffing along the grass as he dropped the duffel at his feet – setting his white hardhat on top of it.
“Namjoon Hyung didn’t come home to gloat.” Jungkook wiped a forearm across his forehead to rid it of the sweat. “Stop being an asshole.”
Namjoon frowned, the image of Jungkook in his factory work clothes twisting something inside of his heart. His year in Seoul had opened his eyes to a reality he’d wished he’d remained ignorant to. He could have said fuck college and stayed in Hwaseong with his friends – with his brothers. Finding work in their little country town would have been easy for Namjoon and he could have been happy, blissfully ignorant to the truth of just how dirty the real world was.
Call him selfish, but he didn’t want to leave his best friends behind while he suffered in silence alone. Would they understand him? Would they hear what he had to say?
“Namjoon,” called Hoseok, bringing him back out of his thoughts; out of his own internal guilt. “Tell us what’s on your mind. Why did you want to meet?”
He looked at all of them and they waited patiently to hear what he had to say. He didn’t just call them all up to hang out or talk about the good times. No. He came back because he wanted to ensure that his friends had a future, and a successful one at that. But it would mean dipping their hands into the dirt; to feel the grime under their fingernails.
Not like farmers did, but the way that criminals lived and breathed.
He jumped from his perch on the rock, picking up a flat river stone as he pulled one last drag from his cigarette. Namjoon reared back and slung the stone out into the river, all of them watching as it skipped along the dark pool’s surface before finally sinking down below and onto the riverbed. One by one, they all approached him – forming a semi-circle around his back. There was no turning back from this once he said what he had to say. They would either listen or cast him aside. He just prayed that it wouldn’t be the latter like he continued to fear.
Spitting the butt of the cigarette out into the water, he turned to look at his friends – a wistful smirk forming on his face.
“You guys wanna come to Seoul with me?”

The impeller continuously rotates
Mixed flow pump can be divided into volute type and guide vane type. Because the lower pump type structure can also work in shallow liquids, it is often used in submersible electric pumps on the working surface, especially it is the main structural type of large-diameter submersible electric pumps. Four submersible pumps, submersible pump structure, working principle of submersible pumps Submersible pumps are also known as submersible electric pumps. In special cases, the pump impeller is damaged or rolled into the foreign body.. 3), the sewage pump and submersible pump shall be maintained once every six months. Grease once 4). According to its application and use, it can be roughly divided into submersible sewage pumps, submersible sand pumps, and clean water submersible pumps.
The impeller continuously rotates, and the water is continuously pressed to a high place.⑸ Jog to judge whether the pump is turned correctly, and correct it if there is any error. First, the main categories are divided according to the working principle: 1). Submersible pump is generally composed of pump body, water pipe, pump base, submersible motor and starting protection device. If you need to check and clean, you need to remove the bearing body and the tail cover, and pull out the shaft and the impeller, the pump body and the inlet and outlet water pipes No need to dismantle 5). The mechanical seal of the lower pump submersible electric pump is located at the outlet water flow In the high-pressure area, the higher the head, the higher the water pressure here, so the performance of the mechanical seal is controlled by the head. As long as the pair of friction rings of the moving ring and the static ring can be exchanged 3), lubricated bearings The pump adopts imported SKF series bearing semi-closed type, high temperature grease has been added at the factory, and it can be continuously operated for 2 years.
⑵ The submersible electric pump with external pump discharges the liquid directly from the outlet of the pressurized water chamber or guide vane behind the impeller, and the motor is also cooled by the pumped liquid. When it is normal, the water leakage should be about 60 drops per minute. ⑵ Disassemble the wire connecting piece in the motor junction box, and use a 500V megohmmeter to test the insulation resistance between the motor winding phase and phase and relative ground should not be less than 0. 5. ⑵ Check valve should be flexible, no leakage inside and outside the valve. 2., submersible pumps. The blades of the axial flow pump are generally immersed in the pool of the water source. (3) Clean the dust inside and outside the control cabinet. The dripping is normal, and the surrounding water is not normal. Check the cable at least once a year, and replace it if it is damaged. 3. Regularly adjust the packing gland of the pipeline pump to ensure that the leakage in the packing room is normal. Vortex pumps can also be divided into single suction pumps, double suction pumps, self-priming pumps, non-self-priming pumps, etc. 1. 2) The fire pump and spray pump are tested once a month and the booster pump every two months.
(2) Water is sucked in and out at a certain angle with the impeller shaft along the flow direction of the mixed flow pump, so it is also called a diagonal flow pump. Unscrew the water diversion plug of the pump body of the pipeline pump, and inject the water diversion (or slurry). Second, the working principle and characteristics of the axial flow pump 1). (3) No water is needed before starting, and the operation is simple. The axial flow pump has a liquid outflow direction parallel to the axis. Try to control the flow and head of the pipeline pump within the range indicated on the label to ensure that the pipeline pump runs at the highest efficiency point to obtain the maximum energy saving effect. 10. 8. If the pipeline pump is out of service for a long time, it is necessary to dismantle all the pipeline pumps, wipe off the water, apply grease to the rotating parts and joints, and store them properly. (3) The pressure gauge indicates accurately and the dial is clear. The working principle of centrifugal pumps. The life of the mechanical seal is 8000 hours under normal circumstances. When the pipeline pump runs normally, turn on the outlet pressure gauge and the inlet vacuum pump.
When the fire pump is started, the water spray range of the fire hydrant outlet at the top of the pipe network is more than 6M every six months.5mm. Regularly check the wear condition of the pipeline pump bushing, and replace it in time after the wear is large. 15. Other classifications of pumps In addition to the classification according to the working principle, the pumps can also be classified and named in other ways. Axial flow pump can be divided into fixed vane and adjustable vane. If it is damaged, it should be replaced in time. Power pumps are also called impeller pumps or vane pumps. After three weeks, it must be rechecked. In the first month of operation, the pipeline pump will change the lubricant after 100 hours, and every 500 hours thereafter, the oil will be changed once. It can be seen that if the impeller of the centrifugal pump rotates continuously, the water can be continuously sucked and pressurized, and the water can be continuously raised from the low to the high or far away. Check the stuffing box When the pump is sealed with a stuffing box, you must pay attention to the tightness of the packing. 4. The actual size is equipped with a sealing ring, and the gap is generally about 0. Water pump; wide range of practical performance; suitable for conveying clean liquid with very low viscosity. Check the pipeline pump and pipeline and joints for looseness. Responsibilities
The maintenance personnel of the management office are responsible for the regular maintenance of the pump. 3. The submersible sewage pump has been filled with an appropriate amount of engine oil before leaving the factory to lubricate the mechanical seal. In layman's terms, it is a machine that combines pump and motor to transport liquid. Even if the pump is close to the drain suction tank, Sight Glass Suppliers there is no need to worry about the temperature rise of the motor, so the application range is expanding. (2) Low head (1-13 meters), large flow, high efficiency, suitable for irrigation and drainage in plains, lakes and river networks. ⑷ The appearance of pipes and accessories is neat and beautiful, without cracks, and the paint should be intact and not falling off. When the submersible sewage pump is not used for a long time, it should be cleaned and lifted and placed in a ventilated and dry place, taking care to prevent freezing. In general, positive displacement pumps are more effective than power pumps. Suitable for irrigation and drainage in plains and lakes. VI.

Day 4 Pennsylvania, Virginia
Begin the day east of East Stroudsberg, PA at the Werry’s Motel & Pub (Est. 1917). Travel east to Bethlehem.
Bethlehem Iron Company, 1861. From here the iron rails used by the railroad to connect the country were created. In 1899 the company transformed to Bethlehem Steel Company. During the first four decades of the 20th century Bethlehem Steel produced the structural steel used to build much of the country. Responsible for 85% of the NYC skyline, and landmark structures like the Supreme Court and the Golden Gate Bridge. They produced the ships & canons for WWI & WWII. After the destruction of much of Europe in WWII, 80/90 % production capacity to the world came from the US. On November 18, 1995 the blast furnace was used for the last time. After 138 years of operation the ovens were turned off. By 1998 all operations ended. The rusted carcass of Bethlehem Steel sits empty along the Lehigh River. Part of the factory land is now a casino, another part an outlet mall. Walkers, like those you’d find in mall in the morning stroll the perimeter of the former blast furnaces. The city still promotes itself as a center of production but now makes items such as Crayons, Peeps and Mike & Ike candies, hardly comparable to its history. Work in the steel factory was difficult and dangerous but workers could look across this country and see the outcome of their toil, the cities which rose from the ground, the wars that were won, the automobiles they drove. Being here I question the future of work in America.
Onward… an interstate afternoon. The asphalt heats up and there is no shade. A brief shower drops the temperature 6 degrees but it’s quickly back to 91. An accident on interstate 81 brings traffic to a halt. I’m moving towards the right shoulder to scoot ahead of semi-trucks then see emergency lights in my rear view. I’m quickly back in my lane before 3 highway patrol, 2 fire trucks and 2 ambulance pass by on the shoulder to my right. Just ahead two large pick trucks are off the road, one has spun nearly 180 degrees. Stopped at the scene are a car and a motorcycle- still standing. I don’t care for riding on the interstates. It’s not the speed but the congestion and unpredictability of the drivers. Tractor trailers account for almost half the vehicles each with 18 wheels that kick up gravel, spray blinding water in rain, 18 wheels that could blow at any time. The trucks have large blind spots and cause powerful wind drafts. There was a time when truckers were considered to be the safest drivers on the road. This is no longer true. I stop for gas and Gatorade. I soak my cool-down vest made of material that retains water and slowly releases the moisture to cool you off under your riding jacket much like sweat evaporates to cool your body. Only warm water comes out the bathroom sink. I take the drenched vest to the refrigerated drink section and chill it amongst the bottles and cans while I pace the store. Still unsatisfied, I move it to a freezer with ice cream sandwiches. I give it 10 minutes there while I look at the map and check my messages. The clerk spots me take the vest out of the freezer and laughs - “well, you’ll be cool now”. I hope so. I zip up the vest and head back to the interstate as three emergency vehicles push through traffic to the on-ramp racing to another accident. 100 miles later a third accident has the interstate at a standstill. I stand on the pegs scoping out the situation and 3 New York Hells Angels (identified by the full rockers on their denim vests) on Harley’s in group formation aggressively push past. They rev the throaty throttles of their Harley’s cutting back and forth weaving in and out of the lanes quickly muscling ahead. They are NOT fucking around. I try to get another look at the burly men but in a moment they’ve pushed beyond my sight. I was once passed by San Francisco Hell’s Angels just before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. It was night. I was reveling in the evening air. I was moving fast on my black and turquoise cruiser when they flew by me as if I were standing still. For a few miles I tried foolishly to keep up and couldn’t. I knew better than to join the pack but I couldn’t get close enough for it to be an option. Like those fellas, these Angels ruled the damn road.
I exit to Staunton, VA for the night. Eager to put the day behind me I order a drink at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel bar. A second gets me where I need to be. I find the swimming pool and eagerly jump in. I kick my legs and swing my arms moving all the parts of my body that are stiff from having held me steady and firm on the interstate today. Pool - hot tub - pool - hot tub- pool. I change and walk past BlackFriars play house then down Beverley Street with its idiosyncratic shops. Past Staunton Trains and Hobbies with an unusually large selection of toy models, past Ware House Miniatures with a woman sitting by a window making a miniature McMansion. Past Fretwell Bass specializing in stand-up bass instruments. Past the Beverly Cigar store, past the Charcuterie and the Fair Trade shop and the antique store and the barber offering $6 haircuts. Past the Camera Heritage Museum. Over to the train station where the Amtrak still runs, through the neighborhood of historic homes, past the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum and Mary Baldwin University founded in 1842 as Augusta Female Seminary. Onto Greenville Avenue past Lees Heating and Cooling, Clyde’s Auto Body Shop and Miller’s Auto Clinic where at 10:05 PM the garage door is up and there’s a mechanic working on a yellow Mustang GT.

105DW-House in Singapore
30 Dec 2021
Architecture: ONG&ONG
Location: Singapore, South East Asia
ONG&ONG
Built on a level but long plot of land in the East Coast area of Singapore, 105DW-House presented a few challenges to the architecture team. A southwest-facing frontage meant that any windows on its facade would require some form of brise soleil to deflect the harsh afternoon sunlight.
To overcome this, the designers opted to place a swimming pool and a Frangipani tree in the centre of the house, creating a courtyard-style focal point and effectively turning the view inwards. The pool features a bridge connecting the living room to the dining room with separate dry and wet kitchens, and service areas towards the back.
Originally a 1960s-era semi-detached house, the land was deemed wide enough for a fully detached property. This allowed for a lush planting scheme around the plot’s perimeter, affording the owners a measure of privacy, while massive floor-to-ceiling glass panes give the ground-floor living spaces the sensation of being a haven within a garden, with ample room to host large parties.
A sense of airiness is apparent from the moment one enters the home, thanks to the excellent cross ventilation within. Order and symmetry are also important elements of the design, with key pieces of furniture aligned along a central sightline and flanked by doorways on either side.
Across the first level, white marble floors contrast perfectly with the matte black of the steel window frames and pillars. In the powder room, Gessi fittings in a customised brushed black nickel finish lend a sophisticated elegance against the Calacutta marble tiles. Selected walls were left in a béton brut style, but with the exposed concrete given a special SKK finishing coat, locking in the textured appeal of its timber mold.
Ascending the stairs, the flooring changes to grooved teak planks, indicating a switch to the more private areas of the house. The second level features a generous guest bedroom and bathroom with sun pipe for natural illumination at the front, while a discreet pocket door slides to reveal two multi-purpose areas currently used as home offices.
Beyond them, a spectacular glass bridge across the courtyard leads to the principal bedroom – a double-volume space with curved ceiling. Behind another set of pocket doors lie an expansive walk-in closet with Fenix laminate doors and a glass skylight above, and a master bathroom with dual vanity areas.
The third level features another ensuite bedroom with a private roof terrace, ideal for enjoying balmy evening breezes.
The house took two years from planning to construction, and includes automated blinds, lighting, piped-in sound and security systems.

Bloodstone
Part one, based off of this
I changed up the storyline, but enjoy the angst!
@angerydj
It’s fairly easy to convince Melvin to fuse with him.  The little peridot is so eager to please, so desperate for more than a glance by a semi-pleased teacher, so excited for the limb enhancer he’s been denied despite his efforts; he’ll do anything for his simple desires that Professor Poopypants nearly feels bad for the manipulation.
Almost.
He needs this power, this taller, stronger form in order to take revenge and to truly dispel laughter so he can introduce himself without hearing snickers, and Melvin is impressionable and a follower and easy to control so he is the perfect choice.
Their dance is nothing special; he twirls the boy and they meld as one during Melvin’s moment of dizziness and confusion-he planned the dance out that way, the more control he has during the dance the more influence he’ll have on the fusion-and they form Andesine, taller, four-armed; with Professor Poopypant’s hair and mustache and he grins with sharp teeth as Melvin marvels at their height and his two limb enhancers.
They take over a small, abandoned factory-funnily enough(not that Melvin gets the humor) the factory used to create limb enhancers-and begin to build, two brilliant minds working as one and creating many, many drones that will suck the laughter out of the heads of infant and adult gems alike.
They have to steal things, and that takes more convincing Melvin on the Professor’s part; the peridot is a rule follower down to the letter, but a few well placed comments on how the school and the world they are living in undermines the Authority and ‘they are doing this to fix it’ is enough to sway Melvin’s worries and doubts.
He doesn’t realize that Melvin can hide things from him while they’re fused, that the boy is growing distant and hesitant on their plan; at least not until it is much too late.
At one point Melvin mentions how much school he is missing during this, and that sparks fear in Professor Poopypant’s heart, because there is the Red Zircon and the Yellow Sapphire that he remembers with a burning rage and a hint of terror because the twin nightmares that are George and Harold could stop them, and he will not allow himself to be stopped again.
The boys are walking home, to their haven of comic book making and creativity, and George has to pull Harold out of the way of a blast sent from one of the fusion’s limb enhancers.  Andesine-it’s getting harder to separate themselves in their shared mind-grins down at them with maniacal intentions, and the two boys shake, gripping each other as Andesine takes aim-
But then, a tear.
Melvin takes a stand, ripping himself away because he never wanted to hurt anyone, never wanted to do anything like this, figuring out that this is too much and Andesine is falling apart but Professor Poopypants refuses to lose again, so he grips Melvin’s fleeing mind and they struggle as Melvin tries to escape and Professor Poopypants tries to force him to stay.
George and Harold watch in horror for a moment before becoming resolute, taking each other’s hands and glowing to create their own fusion, but  Andesine’s white, struggling form falls just as George and Harold begin to combine and the two near fusions collide in a world of white and pain before it all becomes black.
They wake up as one, but at the same time they are four, too many eyes-legs-feet-arms-voices as they try to stand, glowing green veins pulsating painfully with each labored breaths through two mouths.  The world is tinted red through their visor, and each of their multicolored gems gleam in the sunlight as their legs tremble beneath their weight, and they all want out, for a moment they are threatened to fall apart-
But one voice clamors around the scared, pained ones, and that voice pulls them together with a violent tug and shout until the other three go silent in fear and they move, dragging the extra limbs behind them as they shamble to the school, mind set on nothing but pain and destruction.
They are Zircon, Sapphire, Peridot, Watermelon Tourmaline, Bloodstone.
Krupp sits at his desk with his work and Captain floats by his side, humming a soft tune and watching the way his Benny’s eyes focus and nearly glaze over while looking down at the screen, but a harsh scream causes the both of them to jump and move to the window, Captain jumping out and grabbing Benny in his arms as he does so, but he nearly drops the Red Agate at the sight that beholds them.
A…monster is the most apt term, but they both know it’s a botched fusion, can see the sharp, glasses-like shaped gem that belongs to Professor Poopypants and the half of a mustache that is just another sign of the crazed scientist, but it’s the other three gems that cause them to gasp, to pause in horror.
Captain sets Benny down as they recognize the visor and triangle gem of Melvin, and even more worrying, the rectangle shaped gem and tie of George, and the circle shaped gem and stripes of Harold.
The shambling, lumbering mess nearly roars out of its two drooling mouths, one eye-that must be Professor Poopypant’s eye-locking onto them with a harsh, manic glare and forcing the fusion forward, the huge limb enhancer arm swinging forward and grasping Captain in its large fingers, pulling him up towards its mess of a face, and on instinct Krupp summons his whip, throwing it out and lassoing another arm and Captain pushes the fingers off of him and begins to escape their grip.
The sound of sizzling skin could have been the noise that burned itself into Krupp’s brain, but the sound that lodged itself into his mind and pierced his heart was instead the pained, horrible scream that came from the beast’s mouth, because it was not Professor Poopypant’s voice, it was not Melvin’s voice-which would be just as painful, but somehow less impactful-, George and Harold’s voices cry out in unison, echoing across the school campus and the city.  Captain breaks free of the fusion’s grip and has to dodge a shot from the same hand that had held him just a half a minute later, and Krupp hates himself as he summons another whip and grasps another arm, taking both burning ropes and desperately blocking out the crescendoing screams of agony amidst the angry roars as he pulls the huge fusion down, the trembling legs giving out under the pressure and causing the fusion to fall, face first, to the ground.
Captain places a soft hand on Krupp’s shoulder as the two whips disappear-the marks remain, singed black and the screams become pained moans and Krupp wants the sounds to stop-and they stare, looking into the large eyes; all but one is leaking harsh tears that sizzle when coming into contact with the bright green veins that pop out from beneath its skin, and the eyes have so much pain that Captain has to look way.
Krupp grabs his destabilizer-every principal of a infant gem division gets one, and he’s never used it before but he kept it on hand just in case-and with a trembling hand, he jams it through the visor, between the eyes, and into the fusion’s forehead.
The yellow grid lines slide down across the fusion’s body, and it thrashes wildly with screams and roars and cries and it so easily pops and poofs into clouds, dust settling to show four gems-two limb enhancers- laying on the fake grass and immediately Krupp bubbles and sends away Professor Poopypant’s gem, doing so just as Melvin reforms.
The small peridot lunges for his limb enhancers, clutching them to his chest with eyes that are wide in hysteria and disbelief as they dart around the area.  For a moment, they lock onto Krupp and Captain, and Krupp is prepared for tears, for sobbing, but Melvin, gets up on shaking legs and runs away from the both of them, and neither Krupp nor Captain have the strength to call his name.
George takes five hours to reform, and he spends two more hours waiting silently-with haunted eyes, eyes that stare but don’t see anything-for Harold to reform, and when the two boys are reunited all they do is cry silently and clutch each other and shake.  Their faces are gaunt and their eyes are pools of horror and fear and tragedy and pain and Krupp takes a step towards them, but their eyes snap up to him and they look so scared that he backs away, shameful and too concerned to put into words.
Captain flies them to their treehouse-they refuse to let go of each other; they once lost contact and they had nearly screamed before their hands had found each other and they fell back into tense silence-and when they are alone Captain cries into Krupp’s shoulder and Krupp swallow a lump in his throat and lets his own tears fall.
The next week George and Harold are excused from school, and Captain checks on them every day, watching as they slowly begin to speak in short, clipped sentences before it progresses into normal dialogue.  They still refuse to let go of each other, but they never were far apart before, so it’s manageable.
Melvin is also excused for a week, and Krupp goes after school to check on him twice, but the peridot is nowhere to be found, his room untouched, like the boy has become a ghost of sorts.  It worries Krupp, but he has his hands full with George and Harold, so he goes to help the two kids he can.
The three come back to school on the next Monday-it’s surprising and relieving to see Melvin, but he isn’t wearing any limb enhancers-, and their faces are tired and Krupp doesn’t know what to do because nothing is okay.
It feels like there is an inevitable explosion waiting to happen, the three boys being their own ticking time bombs and he can do nothing but wait.
So he waits.

A FAST 1970 Dodge Challenger That Is Really Fast
In 1966, the SCCA Trans-American Sedan Championship for Manufacturers Series (later known as the Trans-Am Series) was established, and the expectation of the sanctioning body was the auto manufacturers would race vehicles that were constructed on their respective assembly lines. Quickly, this belief was upended as the manufacturers began constructing “off assembly line” vehicles, which were made specifically for the Trans-Am Series. The reason the vehicles were special assemblies, rather than production vehicles, was to gain an advantage and increase the odds of beating the other vehicle manufacturers, with the hopes of seeing a sales bump on the bottom line due to the racing success. This was the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” theory that truly worked in the 1960s and 1970s.
As a result of the manufacturers’ actions, the Trans-Am Series introduced regulations to try to level the playing ground and keep the escalating costs under control. One of the regulations required the manufacturers to build and sell a specific number of vehicles to the public. These street vehicles were required to be comparable to the Trans-Am race versions to satisfy the requirements. By 1970, Chrysler management decided to challenge the Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaros that had dominated the 5.0L class for years. A directive was announced to put forth a concerted effort to win the 5.0L class championship with the newest offerings from Dodge as well as Plymouth.
On February 20, 1970, Dodge released a bulletin to their dealership network, introducing the A53 T/A package for the Challenger. While the 5.0L Trans-Am Series required an engine no larger than 305 cid, the street T/A had a 340-cid engine fed by three Holley 2bbl carburetors atop an Edelbrock intake manifold. The 340 had a pair of modified small-block cylinder heads and a valvetrain that was altered to match the cylinder heads. The drivetrain consisted of a TorqueFlite automatic transmission or an A-833 New Process four-speed manual transmission connected to a 3.55:1 geared 8 ¾-inch rearend. The T/A was equipped with front disc brakes, a Rallye suspension that included sway bars on the front and rear and heavy-duty shock absorbers, and a low-restriction dual exhaust that had unique mufflers that dumped the exhaust just in front of the rear tires. The tire combination was one of the earliest designs of smaller front tires (E60 series) and larger rear tires (G60 series). Each bias-ply tire was mounted on a 15×7 stamped-steel wheel or steel Rallye wheel.
Tom Cannon of Glenside, Pennsylvania, has what appears to be one of those coveted A53 T/A package Challengers. In reality, his Dodge started its life as a B5 Blue Challenger with a 318 engine and a four-speed. Tom stated, “When I got the Challenger in 1996, it was a real pile. It needed quarters, trunk extensions, front aprons, the radiator support, and basically every bolt-on body part.” The restoration and transformation of the rusty Challenger was squeezed in during Tom’s free time between making a living and preparing a 1972 Charger for NHRA Stock Eliminator. It took Tom some time to gather the correct parts to convert the Challenger into a T/A, and during this time, Tom met some Mopar enthusiasts that were deeply involved in the YearOne FAST series (now called the FAST Racing Series). FAST stands for Factory Appearing, Stock Tire, meaning the vehicle must appear factory stock, and the vehicle must operate on the rolling stock of the era (bias-belted tires).
Once Tom found out about the FAST series, he abandoned the Stock Eliminator Charger project, and the Challenger project was moved to the forefront. “I like the look of a stock vehicle, but one that will go really fast,” Tom shared, “And the FAST series looked like it was designed just for me.” To get the Challenger ready to race, a 340 was machined to accept a 4.00-inch stroker crankshaft, resulting in a 416 cubes. A factory three two-barrel manifold was found, and reproduction Holley carburetors, matching hardware, and air cleaner assembly were fastened atop of the manifold. The front suspension was left stock with the exception of swapping of the torsion bars to Slant Six units, and the factory front shocks were replaced with 90/10 drag shocks. The front brakes were upgraded with Aerospace four-piston fixed calipers and cross-drilled rotors.
A pair of Tri-City Launcher leaf springs support the 8 ¾-inch rearend housing that’s packed with a 4.30:1 geared spool. The rearend multiplies the engine torque and passes it to a pair of 15×7 steel wheels wrapped by Goodyear Polyglas G60 tires. To help keep the Goodyears stuck to the tarmac, a pair of QA1 double-adjustable rear shocks have been slipped onto the factory shock mounting studs. For the transmission, Tom selected an aluminum A-833 four-speed, which doesn’t sound like a successful formula when working with traction-limited Polyglas tires. If you did an inventory of all the FAST cars at any event, you’d usually just find Tom rowing his own while everybody else utilizes some type of automatic transmission. Tom says, “The stick shift makes me feel more connected with the car, and every now and then it will produce a hero run, which makes it worth it. I have had everything ready to install for years to switch the Challenger to a TorqueFlite, and I would probably win an event or two, but I can’t pull the trigger — I just can’t do it,” Tom confessed as he chuckled.
Tom’s personal best with the Challenger is an elapsed time of 11.35 seconds at 122.97 mph, which he recorded recently at Atco Dragway in New Jersey. Tom has logged a 1.71 second 60-foot time, but usually 60-foot times in the 1.80 second range are the average. To maintain traction on mediocre tracks, Tom has to add weight (a lot of weight), and he has to finesse the clutch pedal and loud pedal to keep the Polyglas tires on the edge of breaking loose.
Since Tom’s first race in 2003, he has had two incidents that were real heart stoppers. The first occurred at Bristol Dragway in Tennessee on the third pass with his freshly built 416 engine. A piece of Mallory (heavy metal) broke free from the crankshaft, which caused a crescent-shaped opening in the oil pan, allowing the slippery stuff to spill onto the track. The oil-coated rear tires instantly lost traction, and the Challenger started to rapidly swap ends until the front end stabbed the opposite lane’s retaining wall. The Challenger continued to rotate, resulting in the rear corner of the Challenger tapping the wall as well. Tom hopped out of the Challenger, expecting the worst, but the damage was much less than he anticipated. Tom loaded up and headed home, but he got lost. He stopped for directions at a shop, and it turned out a professional welder was on duty. The welder fixed the pan, and was able to reweld the Mallory to the crankshaft. To reinstall the Mallory, a lot of hammering and grinding was necessary, which is something nobody wants to see on their new engine, but once the job was complete, everything was buttoned up, and the engine ran flawlessly. Tom decided to peel the damaged body parts from the Challenger and return to the track for the next day’s competition. The Challenger’s body was in need of a rebuild, but he was able to race.
Moving forward a couple of years, Tom was at Lebanon Valley Dragway in New York when he power-shifted the transmission into Third gear at the same moment the rear tires rolled into an undetected pool of coolant that had leaked from the prior competitor. The Challenger took off so rapidly that Tom had zero chance to recover, and just as before, he put the Challenger into the wall. Luckily, the damage was restricted to the rear of the Challenger this time. The Challenger was rebuilt (yet again), and Tom and the Challenger have been incident-free for over a decade.
Tom proves that these cars are meant to be driven, and for the last 15 years, the Factory Appearing Stock Tire class has provided an outlet for his multi-time restored and beautifully detailed Challenger to not just be driven, but driven hard. While Tom doesn’t race the Challenger in the same sanctioning body that Chrysler had envisioned, Tom has taken advantage of the factory performance parts Chrysler designed, and he has pushed the limits of those parts beyond any imaginable performance envisioned in 1970. How did Tom do it? Easy. He built it, rebuilt it, and rebuilt it again until the Challenger was a fast, FAST car.

Jungle Treehouse Meets Urban Brisbane Home
Brisbane’s ‘Terrarium house’ is a physical manifestation of memories for owners John Ellway and Amber Winter. In his design, John used screens to open and divide space, along with semi-translucent glass, invoking memories of past trips to Japan, while the lush planting, rendered block, and semi-outdoor bathroom are inspired by more recent travels to Malaysia and Singapore.

Extended and Updated in Albert Park
A run-down heritage-listed terrace house in Albert Park presented a challenging brief for Tandem. The Melbourne design studio was enlisted to update and extend the property to fit the needs of a young family, whilst maintaining the heritage streetscape.
Extensive renovations were made to the bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry, including lots of new storage. Repositioning the kitchen and opening up the ground level reinvigorated the flow of the home, allowing it to transition seamlessly into its new form: a two-storey garden pavilion.

8 Ways on How to Have Quality Time with Your Child in Casinos
Going to the casino can be a blast for anyone who’s legal gambling age. Unfortunately by the age most of us are financially stable enough to be able to handle losing a couple hundred dollars as a form of entertainment, we’ll also have some rugrats running around. Having kids doesn’t mean that you need to postpone your Vegas vacation until you can find a sitter, however.
Curious what I mean by that? While casinos, at least in the USA, won’t allow you to have your child with you at the gaming tables and in fact will take offense to them leaving the designated walkway on the casino floor that doesn’t mean they aren’t welcome inside the casino grounds. Las Vegas for instance is billed as one of the top family vacation spots in the entire USA despite what most people think about the strip. Unchecked debauchery definitely still has a home in Las Vegas, but there’s more than enough opportunity to have a good time at a casino with your children without them being exposed to any mature themes. This list has a lot of attractions that are specific to certain casinos in Las Vegas, but hopefully it should give you an idea of the expansive list of offerings on display at most casinos worldwide.
Here are just a few of those opportunities:
Casino Arcades
While your child will be quickly ushered away from the casino floor by security staff, one place in a casino your child can keep entertained is in the many arcades that now call casinos their home. These arcades are stocked with all of the typical arcade fare like pinball, Pac-man, and things like racing games. Depending on what casino you’re going to the arcade will range anywhere from pitiful to more interesting than the adult casino. The arcade in the Circus Circus casino in Las Vegas for instance is a giant floor filled with nearly every type of arcade game known to mankind.
If your child is under 12 you’re going to have to accompany them, but with all of the games on offer it is going to be far from babysitting. Having some quality time at any of these expansive video arcades is sure to keep your child engaged and having a great time. These arcades have all of the flashing lights and captivating sounds of the casino floor but without any of the gambling or adult themes. If your child is above 12 you’ll be able to leave them semi-unattended at the arcade but most casinos have the arcade in a place where adults can easily keep tabs on their children while they gamble.
Water Parks
Casinos now invest lots of money in being sprawling entertainment centers instead of purely institutions of luck & chance with slots and card games. Many casinos on the Las Vegas strip or in Macau have water parks that can be enjoyed with the entire family. Spend the day going down water slides or enjoying a wave pool with your child for an extremely memorable trip to the casino grounds. The Atlantis Paradise Island Resort for instance has the Aquaventure water park on the casino grounds and its size cannot be understated. There are water slides, pools, river rides, and even beaches to enjoy a full day in the sun & on the water with your children.
Kid-Friendly Shows
While it’s pretty easy to find a raunchy comedy act at nearly any casino, most understand that people are bringing their kids along so they do their best to have a diverse array of programming suitable for all ages and engaging enough for the entire family. Las Vegas does a great job at having a staggering number of child-friendly shows.
Treasure Island Casino for instance has the Mystere show that is suitable for all ages. Mystere is a Cirque show much like Cirque Du Soleil and you can expect all of the typical gravity-defying tricks expected from that variety of spectacle.
Planet Hollywood is known for their in-house magician named Xavier Mortimer. While I doubt that’s his birth name, magic seems to course through his veins. The only downside is that children under three years old are not permitted to go see his show. Mortimer is a full-blown entertainer and not just a man doing cheap parlor tricks to pass time. His show, dubbed the Magical Dream, is a 14 act show that creates an overarching storyline complete with comedy, magic, and bewilderment.
Wayne Newton may be the undisputed king of Vegas, but he’s not the only person on the strip with some serious singing chops. The Mirage casino has Terry Fator, the acclaimed 2007 winner of America’s Got Talent giving a show that’s suitable for everyone aged five or over. He’s a ventriloquist who sings grand overtures and captivating melodies with the help of his puppets. His vocal range is staggering for a man who never opens his mouth, plus his puppets all have their own personalities to boot. It’s a great mix of singing and pure comedy when Fator takes the stage.
Fancy getting a little medieval with dinner and a show while you’re at the casino with your family? The Excalibur casino has the Tournament Of Kings which is a Medieval Times style tournament that’s lead by none other than Merlin himself. Take in a delicious dinner to the sounds of jousting, gladiator-style combat as well as horse racing. It’s recommended that you pick a favorite knight and follow his progress throughout the show, egging him on all the while.
Amusement Parks
As I said before, casinos now have much more going for them than the gaming floors themselves, with most choosing a theme and going all out to immerse you and your family in a whole new world.
Back at the Circus casino, the Adventuredome is a fantastic place for the entire family. It’s an indoor amusement park that’s over five acres large and has all of the typical carnival fare with a few added bonuses. There’s a rollercoaster on site and even a go kart track, making it a completely all encompassing affair that’s sure to get the blood pumping. It’s like an amusement park, country fair, and midway carnival all rolled into one. One day isn’t even enough time to take in all of the sights and sounds at the Adventuredome. There are carnival games galore which will enable you to win your child a nice plush stuffed animal to help them remember their fantastic trip. Did I mention there’s laser tag, as well? Most of the rides require your child be at least four feet tall to ride, so please keep that in mind if you’re considering going to the Circus Circus casino.
It wouldn’t be a circus themed casino without an actual circus though, every day at 11:30 a full show is put on complete with acrobatics, clowns, and other typical circus fare.
Free Attractions
Most of the things on this list will require you to put some money down which is an unfortunate reality of any casino. However, most of these casinos rake in enough money to have some free amenities that are breathtaking in their own right.
The Bellagio Fountains top the list of free attractions available in Las Vegas. During the weekdays every 30 minutes from 3PM-8PM a stunning choreographed show of water and lighting is put on to any of the 30 songs they have on their rotation. Sit with your children and enjoy the show!
That’s not all the Bellagio has to offer as far as free attractions go. Once you’re done with the fountains on the outside, go inside to their free conservatory and botanical gardens. There are five themes and which you’ll see is dependent on what time of year you’ll be present, currently there is Christmas, Chinese New Year, Summer, and Fall. All of these themes are complete with real plants that are sure to impress. The Chinese New Year theme is complete with oriental plants from the other side of the globe, sure to make you wonder if you’re at Casino Malaysia instead of in the heart of Nevada.
Other casinos offer free art exhibits, flea markets that are free to enter and have no purchase necessary so you can look at some fancy junk, or any of the hundreds of light shows casinos tend to put on.
Restaurants
Any casino will do their best to keep their patrons kept on the grounds the entire time. Part of this is making sure their guests don’t have to leave for any particular reason. This line of thinking has given rise to most casinos having every type of restaurant available for you to dine at.
A Cheesecake Factory is a great family oriented restaurant where you can plan out your day and get your child excited for what’s ahead of them all while eating some magnificent food and dessert. If you’re going to Las Vegas, also known as the entertainment capital of the world, you can bet there will be some kind of show to go along with your meal.
Casinos will always let you bring your entire family into the restaurant for some good eats and quality time. Don’t think they haven’t thought about families who want to enter their grounds who want healthy, budget conscious meals that they can enjoy together. Be sure to check out all of the available restaurants at your particular casino so you can pick one that best suits you & your family’s tastes.
Aquariums
Any tropical resort casino as well as two or three on the Las Vegas strip is sure to have an aquarium on site full of exotic marine life sure to make your child remember their trip.
For instance, the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas contains over 2,000 marine animals and has the distinction of being the third largest aquarium in America. Not too shabby, I’d say. We’re talking over 1.6 million gallons of saltwater flowing through this expansive establishment that has been extremely well thought out as far as architecture is concerned. Walk through see-through glass tubes and peer into the lives of hammerhead shakes, turtles, and schools of fish alike. Your child is sure to think you’ve taken them to Atlantis should you decide to make a trip to any of the casino aquariums.
It isn’t just idle looking around, either. You & your child can take part in interactive activities like feeding stingrays, turtles, or even zebra sharks. You feed the sharks with handheld tongs, it is a very fun experience for people of any age.
Take In The Sights
For children the glitz and glamor of casino life is instantly captivating, I can assure you your child is going to want to take a look around. Nearly all casinos are full of flashing lights, beautiful fountains as well as stunning architecture.
Take a walk with your kids anywhere they’re permitted on the casino grounds and give them a full tour of what a casino is all about. The more expansive casinos will have things to stop and look at dotted everywhere explicitly for this purpose, as well as free shows you can drop in and out on at your heart’s content going on all the while. There’s really no limit to how big a walk you can take, so if you’re trying to tire your kid out so they can get a good night’s rest, try taking them on a scenic walk where they can be dazzled by the high-end luxury of casino life.
You probably thought casinos were strictly adults only, didn’t you? Well, hopefully this list has shown you there’s very little to be afraid if you’re planning a casino vacation but have children you need to take care of. There’s no need to look for a babysitter and your children can have the trip of a lifetime with you, what’s not to love about that? Casinos have evolved far beyond the world of card games and roulette tables, it’d be a shame for your family to miss out on any of these fantastic ways to spend a day together.

Among the Fields of Bali
I spent my first full day in Bali bogan-watching the Bintang crowd. The Aussie-centric party beach suburb of Kuta was about an hour’s walk from my airport accommodation and, with a whole day before leaving Denpasar to fill, this seemed as good as option as any.
The regret arrived almost immediately as I had to cross six lanes of highway, which works out to about ten lanes of vehicles. It soon became apparent that there was not going to be a break in traffic and so, after drawing a deep breath, I stepped off the kerb placing my trust in any one of the island’s Hindu gods that might want to look out for me.
I made it to the median section and exhaled a monumental sigh of relief before it dawned on me that I was only half way and was either spending the night here or risking it all again. Another quick plea to Vishnu, Brahma et al and off I went again weaving around scooters and running in front of buses. The journey then calmed as I wound my way through the city’s backstreets before finally ending up at the southern end of Kuta’s beach.
Here, the Aussie dream appears to be the obtaining of cheap beer, gauche jewellery and a ruddy complexion. It was dirty, busy, with sand and surf a far cry from any of our coastal offerings and not anywhere I could see myself returning in a hurry. This was no destination to risk life and limb getting to. Up and down the lengthy foreshore ran dozens of dodgy surf schools, sunburned drunkards knocking back their Bintangs, and hawkers trying to sell you both tit and tat; one old dear more literally than the others.
My Bali beginning was not leaving the greatest of positive impressions. Instead, after arriving back at my accommodation following a wander home that involved a thunderstorm, being chased by a dog and then navigating the highway again, I made plans to head inland to the Eat, Pray, Love Mecca of Ubud.
The pot-bellied, Bintang singlet wearing gentlemen and the ‘no such thing as too much make-up’ chain-smoking ladies that made up a considerable portion of the Kuta crowd were to be replaced with a dreadlocked and bare-footed contingent. Perhaps still not my style but, after a few years knocking about in Alice Springs, a little more familiar.
Ubud has a reputation for its hippy charms and yoga retreats. There are probably more Yogis here than in the archives of Hanna-Barbera. As well as mastering your meditation and perfecting your downward dog, one could also indulge in an aura spray, which (and I looked this up) is a spray that ‘contains a specific crystal formula that carries a certain healing vibration to tune into’.
Like Kuta, this is most definitely a destination that advertises itself to a specific crowd. However, I couldn’t help but notice how Ubud, like much of Bali, is a town overrun by two wheelers. Where trucks spew out clouds of black smoke and there is an often near-gridlocked traffic network that we as pedestrians are constantly trying to navigate, without being flattened by a ‘which one’s the throttle’ tourist on a scooter. Whilst I have no doubt that ‘the molecular vibrations of the spray’s crystals’ do indeed ‘create harmony and balance’, I’m not so sure it’s going to get the smell of diesel out of a dreadlocked barnet. Either way, Ubud is a popular destination and I too had found my way there.
I’d arrived by hiring a driver via the concierge at my airport accommodation. Due to the strength of the Aussie dollar against the Indonesian rupiah, a car and driver can be hired for those longer journeys and still come in at round $40-$60 a day, regardless of distance or time. This ride took a few hours and also provided me with an opportunity to stop at a coffee manufacturer’s en route where I was able to try some luwak coffee.
Kopi luwak, often thought of as the world’s most expensive coffee, is made from the partially digested coffee beans that have passed through the intestines of the Asian palm civet. Whilst much of the industry has moved into a factory production system where the civets are force fed, I was assured that their production method was still more traditional in that their civets roamed as semi-wild animals that were confined within the boundary fencing of a 200 acre forest and plantation. Then, that the civet faeces were still collected by hand each morning and processed manually.
I was at their point-of-sale, a large garden with examples of the coffee trees and fruit trees used for the teas throughout. In addition, plenty of chooks roaming the grounds and a few large cages containing a handful of civets. At the conclusion of my garden tour I was treated to a tasting of eight coffees and a further eight teas (or at least water infusions) before being offered to taste the luwak coffee for around $5. My curiosity got the better of me and, despite its reputation as being more gimmick than gimme, found it a rather smooth and enjoyable taste, sufficient enough to buy a handful of beans to take home.
Upon arrival in Ubud, I checked into my hotel and made my way to the staple tourist destination of Monkey Forest. A series of old Hindu temples dating from the 14th century, the macaque monkey residents are thought to be holy guardians of the central Pura Dalem temple. Despite this, their role in Hindu mythology is somewhat undermined by the banana sellers at the entrance, as eager tourists line up to purchase the fruit before having it snatched from their hands by the simian thieves along with sunglasses, necklaces and even phones if not paying attention.
As I made my way through the network of paths, listening to the surprised screams of visitors as macaques clawed at their hair and clothes after mistakenly ignoring all the warning signs and attempting to treat the wild animals as if they were cuddly pets, I stumbled across one of the temples hidden among the undergrowth. Here, two young women and a bare-chested gent, all barefoot with the ladies resplendent in summer dresses, braids and henna tattoos, were standing inside the temple’s entrance. I watched as they mumbled some mantra, repeatedly raising their hands to the skies, before cupping them and placing them in the holy water that ran in front to drink from.
After they had finished their ritual, they exited and shut the gate behind them, which quite clearly had the word ‘Closed’ written across it. It may be that these three are devout Hindus with express permission from either the monkeys or the local religious members, who give offerings and use certain trees for religious purposes, or these three are in dire need of an aura spray where we can cleanse the misappropriation out of their chakra. Regardless of their intentions, I certainly struggled to see what three Europeans were hoping to gain from drinking water that at least a few of the 600 macaques are defecating into. Shiva me timbers!
Tumblr media
The next few days were spent wandering on foot in and around town. A short distance north, I found the Campuhan Ridge Walk. This was my first exposure to the serenity that could be found in Bali, once the crowds and roads are left behind. Being a ridge walk, it offers glorious views of the forested hillsides, the reed grasses often harvested for roofing and glimpses of rice paddies. At my turn around point, and the most popular spot to do so, I found solace in a café overlooking a lily pond. It felt a world away from the hustle and bustle that had seemed ever present until then.
My time was soon to get even quieter as Nyepi approached. An annual day of Balinese silence, Nyepi is celebrated on the new year of the island’s Saka calendar. Running from 6am for a full 24 hours, the day is intended as one of self-reflection and thus anything that might inhibit that is prohibited. Consequently, the island shuts down with only the Nyepi police (or Pecalang) patrolling the streets to ensure all remains calm. As tourists, we are confined to our accommodation and thus I spent the day before ensuring I had wine, cookies and a couple of pot noodles to get me through the day. Self-reflection’s a heck of a lot more tolerable if you’re half a bottle of wine to the good and sated on chocolate biscuits.
As it turned out, the total of six guests were well looked after by our hotel manager who brought us all pancakes and coffee for breakfast as well as an afternoon meal. Other than that, I managed to spend most of the day either lounging at the pool or peering over the rock wall behind that overlooked a small stream.
Here Asian water monitor lizards lackadaisically made their way downstream occasionally offering a brief breaststroke kick to aid their momentum, as their tail glided side to side through the water like that of a croc’s. Above them, swallows flitted through the air like Messerschmitts in a high speed, protracted rendition of the Battle of Britain as they took down insects from the skies. It was dizzying watching them, jet black with flashes of blue and white on their bellies, never settling. Sunning themselves on the rocks were the resident spotted turtle doves, egrets and herons. Squirrels chased one another up and down the palm trees and leaping from the tree tops too often to their apparent deaths before somehow clinging to a feeble branch that bended and bounced under their lightweight frames to its limit. Considering my usual inability to sit still for more than a few minutes, I found my time confined to the hotel surprisingly bearable.
I was still delighted when Nyepi Day was over though and I could once again set foot outside the hotel grounds. I got a little further out by booking another driver and heading seaward, leaving the rainforested highlands behind.
One of my Nyepi companions at the hotel was a French lass from Normandy by the name of Julia. She’d been in Bali a month or so already, had been before, and recommended that I visit Amed on the north-east coast. A popular spot for decades with divers and especially Gallic ones, Amed is a series of villages along a black-sanded volcanic coastline in the shadow of Mt Agung. This part of Bali is much quieter and the coastal road only ever punctuated by a vehicle of any description on occasion. It didn’t take long for me to work out I was going to be much happier here.
My first morning’s stroll took me past a café that doubled up as a freediving centre. Having wandered past once from the beach side, I doubled back along the road side and popped in for a Balinese coffee and to decide whether I’d like to try my hand at freediving or not. A mate back in Australia had given it a go and had been waxing lyrical about it when we’d caught up in NSW just before I flew out. Convinced, I spoke to one of the instructors who informed me that a two-day course had started about an hour ago. He stuck his head round the door, confirmed that it wasn’t too late to join in and so minutes later I found myself lying on a bean bag learning about belly breathing and $250 lighter.
Freediving is essentially breath holding underwater but if you’re good at it, can get you deeper than a recreational SCUBA diver. I am not good at it and started by getting about as deep as a balloon. Before that, our morning’s dry land instruction was around the physiology of holding one’s breath and talking through the symptoms encountered when doing so. I was extremely good at practicing on land and my low heart rate and relative fitness had my body’s oxygen levels still at 99% after 90 seconds of apnea. These were very positive signs.
In the water, it was a slightly different affair. We swam out 100m or so off shore to water some 40m deep. Split into two groups we took it in turns to go through our warm-up breathing, taking a breath and then descending a line with the intention of reaching 10m before turning around. The theory was good but my problems equalising my ears prevented me every single time. Instead, having aborted multiple attempts at around 5-6m, my instructor suggested not worrying about depth and practice hanging out on the line. Thus, on the next few tries, I descended just a few metres before righting myself and stopping.
It was beautiful. The openness of the water, the blueness of the view and the peacefulness that pervaded was immense. I imagined this must be what it’s like to spacewalk. I’ve SCUBA’d and snorkelled but I’d never experienced such calm in the water before. I might not be a good freediver but I’m a convert. Things were only to get better after this two day course since day three was putting it into further practice alongside manta rays.
Tumblr media
Together with a few of the instructors and other students of Apneista, we travelled to the clear waters off Nusa Lembongan and home to a known feeding station of manta rays. A dozen or more boats bobbed up and down since scores of SCUBA divers had long since arrived. Thousands of bubbles made their way back to the surface from a hundred or more regulators. What there were not, were manta rays. However, some fifteen minutes later I saw my first and shortly after, my second.
Then, the divers began ascending. Their air exhausted and knowledge of their dive logs preventing them from returning, the waters emptied and only a handful of freedivers remained. Before long a manta ray swam by, followed by another and then a third. All up I counted well into double figures, sometimes two or three would pass by at a time. Unencumbered by walls of bubbles and a mass of bodies, the rays returned as our instructor had predicted on the journey over.
The experienced among us were diving down the 20m to the seabed and watching the majesty of the rays as they swept overhead. I made do with a glorified snorkelling effort, swimming down to my ear popping maximum of five or six metres and hanging out above them. I’d missed a chance to get up close and personal with manta rays some years ago off Fiji, but this was more than making up for it.
This also represented the end of my Amed adventure with the final part of my Indonesian getaway taking me away from Bali and on to the island of Gili Air off the coast of Lombok.
Gili Air is a tiny isle of around 15km2 and one upon which there is no motorised transport. The only fumes I was inhaling here was from the back of a horse’s arse as I took the carriage it was drawing from the docks, where the ferry dropped me off, to my retreat in the middle of the island.
The few days I spent on Gili Air were about as busy as that spent during Nyepi Day. I went for coffee in the mornings. I swam during the afternoons, including finding a couple of turtles to hang out with as I practiced my breath holding and ear equalising. At night, I dined at one of the dozens of beachside restaurants where my true Aussie nature finally revealed itself; ‘…and anything to drink, Sir?’ ‘I’ll have a Bintang please’.

20 Unique Rides From the 2017 Woodward Dream Cruise
It’s billed as “the world’s largest one-day automotive event,” and each year for at least the last 10 or so it has drawn between 1.0 and 1.5 million attendees and 40,000 or so vintage and, ahem, “special interest” vehicles. The cost of admission? Zip. OK, property owners along the Avenue typically charge owners a few Jacksons to back in, pop the hood, and whip out their folding chairs, but compared with the cost of any single admission ticket on California’s snooty Monterey Peninsula during the same weekend, Woodward is virtually free. Completely removing cost as a barrier to entry encourages diversity the likes of which won’t be seen at Pebble Beach any time soon, spanning from upside-down vans to bizarre oversized Ram/Cummins-powered Hudsons, rat rods, and every big- and small-block muscle machine imaginable. Motor Trend’s Detroit office garage is situated just 3,718 feet away from Woodward, but your humble technical director’s garage is a mere 518 feet off the historic Avenue. So an editorial team of four scribes and one shooter set up operations there and cruised all week, enlisting chauffeurs from FCA, GM, and Ford, covering Tuesday’s GM Design on Woodward event, and many more. Here are the highlights of the main event. Upside-Down-&-Backwards GMC Rally Wagon How ya gonna get people to look at your nice, physically shiny but culturally dull van? By turning it upside down and somehow suspending it from a smaller car’s rolling chassis. Other modifications of note include a sliding side door converted to a top-hinged hatch and a second live axle with differential to spin the van’s skyward-facing front wheels along with the rear ones at something a bit slower than apparent road speed. Visibility is provided by a second set of holes cut into the rear doors above original glass ones. Lingenfelter 1970 Oldsmobile “442” Vista Cruiser Wagon Lingenfelter Performance Engineering does most of its business building Corvette and Camaro engines, but for Woodward, why not give a classic Vista Cruiser wagon the full 442 treatment and then some? The “then some” includes a Lingenfelter LS3 Performance Engine topped with an Edelbrock supercharger good for 650 horsepower mated to a Tremec six-speed transmission spinning through a 3.73:1 Eaton posi axle. Ridetech air-ride suspension and Weld wheels round out the package. Yum. 1937 Hudson Terraplane XXXL This crazy project actually started with a normal-sized Hudson Terraplane but was stretched, widened, tallened (if that were a word) and plopped on a Dodge Ram 2500 diesel truck chassis converted to air suspension. It towers over traffic, perhaps heightening the “plane” aspect (har-har, see what we did there?) of its original nomenclature—though heaven knows what it would take to get this beast off the ground. Cushman 7-Passenger Skiff Safety first! Life jackets were being worn as this precious little wooden skiff scurried up the Avenue powered and suspended by the wee 22-hp engine and three-wheel chassis from a Cushman model 898457 Haulster refuse collector. Hopefully they didn’t drive this street-legal beauty all the way from Florida, where its motorcycle license plate hails from. Snapper’s Buggy & Machine Co. Caterpillar Buggy Here’s another “car” (pictured at left) where, without any vehicular traffic around it for scale, might almost look “normal.” Might. Actually the big Alcoa semi-tractor front wheels hint at the scale pretty well. Instead of burnouts, this one did “rolling coal” demos on demand #WeDontNeedNoStinkingParticleTraps. Tommy’s Rod Shop Chopped School Bus Folks come to Woodward from far and wide. Case in point: this too-cool-for-school bus from Guthrie, Kentucky. It’s an easy low step up from the road, but the basketball team had better watch their heads while climbing aboard. 1971 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Donk Cabrio Most of the really big-wheel cars came out to cruise after dark, perhaps to show off their underbody and wheel-well lighting, but this one was bold enough to show off its pristine bodywork in the bright afternoon sunlight. Hot rods were admitted to Pebble Beach a few years ago—can the Donks be far behind? Yes. Very far indeed. Circa 1970 Chevrolet Nova “Silver Bullet” Superbird The front license plate identifies the owner/driver as a “fortunate son,” and indeed this is some machine he has been blessed with. The mind fairly boggles as to what must be under that hood, sucking great lungfuls of air through that elaborate hood, and just imagine the rear-end stick that wing must endow this baby with when turning into Michigan International Speedway’s turn three at 200-plus mph … 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline Fastback Patina is the new black. Many cars observed had faux patina painted or stenciled onto their bodywork, but we’re rather more convinced by this one’s, erm, “finish.” Equal parts factory sheetmetal, rebar, and heavy-duty chain comprise the exterior surface with lovely details such as metal spiders on the grille. We’re not sure what the engine is, but it must be valuable—there’s a hefty padlock securing the hood. Char’s Poultry Grooming 1966 Chevrolet C10 Custom Stepside Trucks and riffs thereon were popular at Woodward this year. This 1966 Chevy is owned by retired air force serviceman Mario Guarnaccia of Mars, Pennsylvania. It’s named after his wife Charlene (Char) who is a Finn (which explains the “Finlandia” and flag inside). They have chickens, so Char decided to have the “poultry grooming” mural painted on the door. Naturally chickens don’t get dolled up, but apparently lots of folks enquire as to how the Guarnaccias groom chickens. The couple bought the truck six years ago for $600, and Mario did all the work himself, which included chopping the rearmost 2.5 feet off the 8-foot bed. Troy Police Burnout Enforcement Unit? Many jurisdictions pitch in to help secure the Woodward Dream Cruise, but the Troy, Michigan, boundaries do not include any stretch of Woodward Avenue. This “officer” must have been a tourist. Jurassic Park Motor Pool 1992 Jeep Wranglers Extreme fans will go to great lengths to express their love for movie franchises. The first two Jeeps in this lineup have completed their transition to Jurassic world tour vehicles, probably following the build instructions from www.jpmotorpool.com. The third Jeep in line has only gotten about as far as the license plate. 1956 Mercury Custom That’s our best stab at what this long, low, lovely custom started its life as before getting its Cadillac taillamps and luggage-loading-inhibitor wing. The level of body and paintwork is stunning. There are a lot of folks in the Detroit area who are exceptionally gifted in these arts … Rat Rods ‘R Us Having missed several of the last Woodward Dream Cruises, your 500-foot adjacent editor was surprised at the number of full-on ultra-slammed, heavily patinated rat rods were prowling the avenue. They’re definitely a thing—and a good thing at that. 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Roadster It’s probably safe to say that during the Woodward Dream Cruise, cars originally intended to fulfill a performance mission slightly outnumber those designed for more quotidian pursuits. The Corvette Grand Sport was certainly a benchmark performer in its day. It’s a fair bet that this one’s a clone or tribute car, but we didn’t take down the seller’s number to find out for sure. 1937 Ford Model 78 Cabriolet The Woodward Dream Cruise is all about having fun, and that often involves props—such as Kermit The Frog in a coordinating shade of green. This car probably has had an interesting history—note the right-hand drive. 1968-’73 Datsun 510 Woodward welcomes all makes and models, and although domestic fare predominates, there are plenty of imported gems such as this five-and-dime Datsun wearing minor battle scars and doffing its bumpers and radio antenna. 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Art Car Art cars are a perennial feature of the Woodward Cruise, and this Marine has clearly festooned Bryan Nesbitt’s original design with about a thousand skulls, crossbones, and skeletal hands, plus more than a few handgun images thrown in for good measure. Boss Hoss 572 Bike So you think you’re a big man controlling 707 or 808 horses in a big heavy four-wheeler, eh? Well real men rock a 625-hp 572-cubic-inch Bow Tie Big Block between their legs with one-wheel drive. And they don’t bother with Snell-rated helmets or riding leathers either! 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner As night falls the illuminated engine compartments and undercarriages really start to shine, like on this high-rise dual-quad Roadrunner. But alas by about 9:30 the police start diverting traffic onto the cross streets and closing Woodward down. Of course, after the cops go to bed the most serious scofflaws return, performing illicit burnouts and minor street races on the Avenue, with all of the audible action wafting in every open bedroom window within 500 feet of Woodward. Can’t wait for next year! The post 20 Unique Rides From the 2017 Woodward Dream Cruise appeared first on Motor Trend.

Lekkerrrr
When I moved to Boston 3 years ago, I got a text within my first 48 hours saying Kate and Daniel had booked a trip to visit the following weekend.  The weekend of their visit, I distinctly remember Dan telling me he was interested in applying to University of Pittsburgh because of their study abroad program in Cape Town, South Africa.  And then 3 years later he was attending that program through Pitt and I booked a flight to visit!
Dan is my childhood neighbor and 5 years younger.  So I had to mentally prepare to be around kids that were barely 21 years old...AND tackle it as my first semi-solo trip.  Not to mention I was able to use credit card points and fly for FREE!
Itinerary:
Wednesday, November 29th 2017:  My flight departed Boston in the evening and I arrived at my layover destination in the AM.  With a 9 hour layover in Munich, I ventured outside the airport to the Christkindlmarkt in the city center.  With a full belly of sausage, one (ok two) gluhwein, and new cashmere scarf to keep me warm during the snowfall, I headed back to the airport nice and tired.  Topping off with more hefeweizen (best type of beer to drink solo!) at the airport, I at least boarded verrrry sleepy for my 12 hour flight to Cape Town.
Friday: FINALLY arrived in South Africa around lunch time!  Since Dan’s semester had just ended, the school let us stay there for a crazy affordable price.  Would have been good to know that before we booked the airbnb in CBD...(theme with 21 y/o’s lol).  A couple dead cockroaches in the kitchen and no central wifi BUT I had an incredible view of table mountain from my bedroom window.  We spent most of this day booking tours / airbnb’s for the rest of the trip.
Saturday: We went to the Woodstock Market in the late morning.  Half is local food vendors and the other half is local artists selling jewelry, household goods, clothes, you name it!  Oh yeah and there was a DJ in the center right next to an aperol spritz station.  I mean...what could be more perfect?!? Started with an amazing pour over and some stuff avocado.  Then moved on to a spritz while I bought some awesome jewelry and a vegan leather clutch.  I could have stayed here alllll day!  And i probably spent less then $30 USD total.  Then we headed to the central business district (CBD) to check out the Company’s Gardens.  It is a beautiful public with a really awesome natural irrigation system for their vegetation.  AND super cool mega sized whicker baskets as swings and tree houses.  We grabbed fresh Juice on Long Street and ordered flights to try from brewery Beerhouse.  A quick freshen up and we grabbed dinner on the waterfront meet up with some of his friend’s.
Sunday: Dan was super sweet in arranging a day to hang to check out the newly finished Zeitz Contemporary Museum of Art!  It’s superrrr sick - a restored grain factory turned into museum.  Concrete was cast around the old silos, which created a traditional deceiving form on the exterior.  While the interior is just the reverse - a HUGE curvilinear entrance with a skeleton of a pterodactyl very Game of Thrones like in the center.  A guy who worked in Dan’s study abroad office was a recent architecture grade from the University of Cape Town - so he joined us on our day of touring architecture!  In fact, he is the one that told me there was a bit of an uproar of a British architect being selected for Africa’s first contemporary art museum.  The attention to detail and design was immaculate in the city - makes it hard to believe there were no African-based architecture offices that couldn’t have tackled the challenge... We then checked out the watershed project.  It’s an old industrial boat storage facility turned host for local artist vendors on the ground floor and communal “we work” style offices on teh second floor.  Once again, a SUPER cool space!!!  (BTW - this will be the theme of my architecture comments for this trip).  The enclosed food market next door was a perfect stop for lunch.  After walking around the waterfront some more, we made our way over to Camp’s Bay to watch the sunset.  This area reminded me a lot of Southern California w/o the prices plus mountains in the background.  Truly it was the most stunning sunsets I have ever enjoyed (and wth a spritz too!).  Quite possibly my favorite day in Cape Town of the trip!!
Monday: It was a big weekend of activities for Dan so he slept in while I wandered around a bit on my own!  Started with trying the world’s strongest cup of coffee at Haas Coffee (great I would only need one cup this morning!).  Then went to the District Six Museum - which is a museum dedicated to the district segregated and then bull-dozed down during apartheid.  Really heartbreaking but an excellent intro to how it has only been 50 years since this epidemic happened!  To put into perspective, my parents were born before this happened (sorry for the age exposure mom and dad)! I then grabbed lunch and took the scenic route from the V/A Waterfront allll the way down to Clifton Beach.  Stunning views, beautiful weather, and a good opportunity to see what South Africa’s non-working people are doing along the water at this time of day.  They consisted of surfers, mothers and sitters pushing kids in strollers, LOTS of people running or roller blading, and a handful of “lookers” that suddenly stop what they are doing when you walk by.  The beach is tucked between a bunch of wealthy homes in a pretty private location.  A great spot to water-color the ocean crashing into seals on the rocks beyond!  After much relaxing, I headed home for a quick change before Dan and I headed to hike Lion’s Head at sunset.  An easy hike but the views are stunninggggg.  Ended the evening with take-out of a Cape Town quintessential BFA (bacon feta avocado) pizza.
Tuesday: Walked to grab coffee in the nearby neighborhood of Rondebosch and then took a car to the beautiful, traditional Bo-Kaap neighborhood!  Vividly painted stucco buildings line the streets and are very well preserved amongst the expanding urbanism surrounds.  We took a cooking class with Cape Malay cuisine.  The culture descends from Southeast Asian, but brought to Cape Town through the Dutch Indian Trade Company.  So the cuisine has a interested blend of all three cultures - deep curry flavors with just enough spice for white people to tolerate LOL.  Great day learning more about the history and making amazing, brand-new dishes!  With very full bellies and a very strong sun overhead, we noodled to Camp’s Bay beach with a handful of Dan’s classmates.  They were a bit of a handful and we had to lay on every piece of clothing so it wouldn’t get swept up in the immense ocean wind, but the views were stunning!  We ended the night with trivia at a local bar.  Luckily we had a couple South Africans on our team, so they were able to help us answer “what is the most played African song in foreign films.”
Wednesday: Dan and I headed to CBD to pick up a rental car for our trip outside of the city!  We drove along swerve-y, cliffy edge road from Camps Bay, down through Hout Bay, down to the Cape of Good Hope!  It’s basically a national park with...wild baboons roaming around!  We went to the lighthouse at the Cape Peninsula and it was so windy I was scared to take my phone out in case it would fly away!  Awesome perspective of the peninsula if you had a strong enough grip of the railing surrounding you!!  I did a bit of hiking around the rocky cliffs while Dan and his friend Allie took lots of selfies around the water.  We then checked into out ocean-front apartment  in St. James that was so. freaking. BEAUTIFUL!  Unreal views, unreal price, unreal sunsets/sunrises.  Even got to see whales breaching form the balcony!!  We finished the day by grabbing dinner and drinks from the great restaurant Tiger’s Milk in Muizenberg.
Thursday: I started with a sunrise run along a beautiful ocean-front path that went right by all the morning surfers in Muizenberg and the super man-made formed but naturally resourced ocean pools in St. James.  We then hopped in the car for a morning snorkeling with seals, to only find the currents and wind were too strong. :(  Instead we headed to check out the legendary warm-weather penguins at Boulders Beach.  I grabbed some coffee, and a meat/cheese delicious hot-pocket style snack for lunch, and we headed the immaculate Noordhoek Beach.  Bright white sand, turquoise water with minimal waves - never seen a more beautiful beach!  So stunning and barren, for some very strange reason...maybe the large number of horse flies?  LOL despite getting swarmed it was so hard to not want to get swallowed up in the beautiful vista.  Even if I did leave with over twenty bites on my legs alone.  We headed home and while those two napped, I walked down to check out the shopping in Kalk Bay.  Also shops and the store owners were all super friendly - one woman’s husband photographs architecture professionally!  After stirring them awake we headed to Muizenberg to watch the surfers at sunset and check out the infamous painted beach shacks. We bounced around at a couple out door bars before ending up at the great Tiger’s Milk.
Friday: Another sunrise run and yoga on the deck.  I grabbed coffee at the super cute shop blonde + beard in Muizenberg, then we jumped in the car to head back to Cape Town.  We moved into a different university student housing buildling upon our return...and this is the point where I decided it was worth spending the money for a nice apartment not in the college area of the city.  We went to a natural watering hole only known to locals/students.  Amazing views of table mountain and the water was super clean and hella refreshing.  We grabbed dinner at an Indian restaurant close by then headed to drinks at Yours Truly on Kloof Street.  My. Favorite. Bar. HANDS DOWN!  Different DJ each level, awesome craft brews and cocktails, beautiful string lights and plants climbing up the terraces, super funky furniture, and people rocking all different trendy outfits.  Dan’s friends felt out of place but I freaking loved it!!  Finally I caved with how much they were itching to leave, and we grabbed Italian food down the block.  We then stopped at their favorite 21 y/o hangout sgt pepper on Long Street and I hung on the smoker’s deck with Dan while his friends had a couple items stolen from them on the sweaty dance floor.
Saturday: Time for our wine tour!  $60 for a round-trip bus to the infamous wine town of Stellenbosch. Tasting #1 included an array of cheese.  Tasting #2 was in a beautiful outdoor garden.  Tasting #3 tour of a cute farm where we tried wine from the syringe!  Plus a fullll traditional braai (barbeque).  Tasting #4 tiny little private winery.  Tasting #5 pairing with Chocolate!  Best part was bonding with everyone else on our tour!!  An american couple on grad school holiday, an older couple with one descendent of Upper Saint Clair, super cool British couple my age, older British couple who have travel to 80% of the world, and a British dad with his daughter about my age who works in an art gallery.  Great convos about how crazy Trump is but it humanized the U.S. to not be this great country anymore, to why haven’t I signed up to do bungee jumping yet, to you are crazy for staying with a bunch of 21 y/o’s up until now!  Left with lots of souvenirs and great memories!!  Brought my stuff to my new adorable apartment downtown and crashed during the sunset while watching elf on Netflix.
Sunday: Headed out solo to grab coffee/breakfast and then check out the Castle of Good Hope.  Strangely enough there was a cross fit competition taking place in the main courtyard, so that was a bit entertaining to peak at in between taking in all the history.  It was a dutch fort along the East India Trate Route to Indonesia - but more specifically acted as the home base during teh British invasions.  Free tours are given by of the military museum and the inter-workings of the castle which turned out to be very light and engaging!  I think picked Dan up and we went to the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens.  Amazing variety of wildlife here and a good chance to hang with Dan one-on-one.  We went to Moju Market and drove by a crowd letting out for the Springbok Rugby game.  Now those fans where some crazy costumes!  The market was superrrr lekker (va bene in Afrikaan).  There was a station for trendy oysters, a “salad bae” stand, local wines shop, curry shop - everything plus an elevated ocean view.  Awesome way to fuel up before Dan and I conquered a Table Mountain hike the next day.
Monday: I grabbed breakfast at the adorable Skinny Legs cafe and then coffee and beans at Origin Coffee Roastery.  Both make my mouth water thinking about them (and their beautiful interiors too!).  Then when to meet Dan at Kirstenbosch, where the beginning of our hike up Table Mountain began.  Started pretty steep, up wooden ladders in woodsy areas.  At the top we stumbled upon a completely barren water source.  It looked to be a collection spot for a small reservoir.  The water was unnaturally a rainbow gradient and was in a bit of a small canyon - making it seem like people were going to jump out at any moment like the hunger games.  We randomly heard a siren here too, making us jumping in our pants even more!  We then continued along the top of table which is mostly huge boulders - but it started to get windier.  We soon found that it was too windy at the top for the gondola to take us down!  So we had to bare the exposed edge by foot!  This was seriously soooo hard because any time we would hear a huge wind gust coming, we would have to duck and hold onto any possible branch around us.  Took a while it felt such a  rush of accomplishment as we ate at an Indian buffet afterwards!
Friday: Last day!  My flight was leaving in the evening, so i tried to squeeze in as much as I could!  Morning at Clifton Beach then lunch of mussels and a glass of chenin blanc at the waterfront with Dan.  Was able to do a little shopping at the artist in the waterfront too - most sold awesome sustainable home goods too!  Probably did the most shopping / consuming of good food/drink this trip - but thats because it was all my style, amazing flavors, accessible, and reallllly affordable!  I’m already counting this as one of my top 3 favorite cities and I can’t wait to go back and visit!!!
What brought me excitement:
Design Aesthetic: Yes the city is BUMPING with architecture, both new and old.  Now this may sound crazy, but when i walked into a basic enterprise office in the CBD, something struck me.  I followed the datum of the square floor tile, that then aligned with the line of small stair landing, that then aligned with the rectangular wall base, that then aligned wth the curtainwall mullion.  MY JOB IS TO ALIGN FINISHES FOR A MUSEUM!  How do these simple alignments just happen in the least design conscious interior spaces?! Still blows my mind the attention to detail and craft the culture just exudes.  And it is oh so clear in every interior of every store, restaurant, coffee shop, boutique, refurbished space.  Really inspiring as someone in the design field!!  Nothing boujee or over the top either, all very minimalist, modern, simple, earthy designs - amazing!
Cultural Blend: My first day at the beach, there were a bunch of middle school age kids that all playing soccer together.  A girl in a hijab kicking a ball to a blonde haired boy kicking to a black boy .  The integration of the future generation was so heart-warming to see it made my eyes ACTUALLY well up!  I’m not kidding too!!  It’s location is an ideal spot for not just europeans on holiday, but a great stretch of immigrants from the middle east and asian as well!  I can’t wait to come back in just 5 years and see how progressive it will be!!
What left me uneasy:
White Guilt: Learning how recent apartheid and many racist epidemics had occurred, it really left a sinking feeling in my stomach.  I felt guilt vacationing here because I didn’t want any locals (no matter their ethnicity) to feel like I was taken advantage of their home.  I didn’t want it to seem like I had some money to spend so I was creating a larger economic divide and taking anything away from the locals.  It was probably the biggest guilt I have ever felt, even though it wasn’t me personally who had done those hurtful injustices.  But it is up to me to stand up for those that are still getting hurt today.  It certainly empowered me to not bat an eye and turn a shoulder when something is happening you don’t believe in.
Water Crisis:  At first I was wondering why toilet’s in the student housing were never flushed!  Then i realized it was to preserve water.  They were in a serious crisis and I didn’t fully understand it still we were at our airbnb in St. James.  I remember standing at the sink washing my hands, looking straight ahead at the 180 degree ocean view.  After drying my hands, I stepped on the balcony to take in the view even more.  A line of people about 100′ away caught my eye and I realized they were waiting at a public water source.  The government has shut down water to certain neighborhoods - unfairly.  These people weren’t stumbling out of overcrowded buses - they were coming with buckets out of private cars in nice clothes.  I felt sooooo guilty that I had a water source right here yet these people are waiting for this small spigot down the street.  Would the airbnb host downstairs be pissed if set a couple of buckets of water outside for these people?  But also, how could the host bat an eyelash and not be wanting to do the same thing?  This tore at my gut throughout this entire trip.
Safety: Cape Town is a very walkable, and even bikable city!  Unfortunately i didn’t realize how much I had to worry about safety even during the day.  I do look like the native Afrikaan, as many people spoke it to me before I spoke English back.  However, I think the economic divide is still too much for there to not be some animosity between the various parties.  It made me feel a little limited, that I couldn’t safely take the public train to the beach or rent a bike along the coast - all things I take for granted in my day to day life.
