So Henry is dead (RIP) and Kate and Thomas move in to the old family home with a “live in companion” called Margaret (who servants in the house claimed was having an affair with Thomas) and they have a son, Nigel in June 1886. Shortly after this, Kate falls sick. The family doctor can’t find anythign wrong with her and people start to grow slightly suspicious. Rumours spread. People whisper on the streets... Cut to a family friend drinking from a cup of tea meant for Kate and (you guessed it) falling sick. It becomes immediately apparent that something is cooked. The police get involved and discover Thomas has been poisonning his wife every morning in her cup of tea and that he did the same thing to Henry Cain. 

By this point, the news media of New Zealand are in a frenzy - journalists are compiling their reports and selling them around the island in pamphlet form (we know how the Victorians love a pamphlet). Thomas is sentenced to life in prison and serves a few of those years before being exiled back to England in a fun little switcheroo on the ol’ send the crooks to the penal colonies down under (though some reports seem to think he stayed in NZ). 

Kate eventually secures herself a divorce in the early 1900s and moves with  Nigel to England. Nigel then joins the British Army when the Great War begins, and dies in the trenches in France. 

And for 20 years of my life I have walked past the statue of the vernerable Henry Cain and just thought he was a grizzled sea captain who would make a mean cup of tea.

Ellen was widowed in her thirties with eight children to support (her eldest stepson had left home) – James died with no Will. She began protracted legal petitions to the Supreme Court to sell estate assets to support the children. 

Ellen signed the suffrage petition, giving her Dundas Street address; she subsequently registered on the 1893 electoral roll. 

She stayed in Dunedin until the 1920s then moved to Timaru to her son Norman, who had been wounded in World War 1.

Ellen died in February 1943 at Waitati, aged 84. She was buried with her husband and other Cramond family members in Dunedin’s Northern Cemetery.

There are many descendants of Ellen’s stepchildren and although Ellen’s daughters each had one son, she does not appear to have any direct descendants. How she came to New Zealand is a mystery, but from snippets of information, it seems Ellen strove for fairness – facing her challenges with resilience and courage.
