30 Questions for Your Dark Urge
4. What would your Dark Urge consider to be their greatest flaw? Is this accurate?
Their lack of perfect self-control. They regret Quilâs death for the fact that she should be alive now, yes, but also for the way it highlights a failure of control on their part.Â
It is accurate to an extent, but also⊠not. The standard of perfection Kelis holds themself to would be difficult to attain even for a standard mortal, let alone someone with the deck stacked against them from the start in such a way.
17. What is your Dark Urgeâs greatest regret?
[Serious]: The decades they spent under the thumb of Bhaal, controlled by the bloodthirst instead of controlling it themself. They donât regret individual acts in more than a general sense, but they hold self-control in utmost regard, and it sickens them that their old self thought they were in control, while walking step-by-bloody-step along the path laid out for them.Â
[Flippant-but-Still-Dead-Serious]: The few secrets they failed to uncover in the areas they explored over the course of their initial quest. When they find out about the entire hidden basement at the Arcane Tower, they transform into an owlbear and take off to sulk for an entire day about it. They were meticulous. They were thorough. They were desperate for answers. How could they have missed something in hindsight so blatantly obvious?!
21. What are 2-3 songs that your Dark Urge would relate to?
Nemo - Nightwish
The loss of innocence that can never be returned, a nameless existence
Fruits of the Dark - Dune Moss
Resonates with their experience of taking refuge in Wildshape to escape the worst attacks of their Urges
Carrion Comfort - aeseaesÂ
The desire to rip and bite and tear at the world until there is nothing left of you to feel pain, or confusion, or doubt

The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry - I've been singing this song all day round the house. It's such a classic strange and tragic folk song. I love the Unthanks and I love Julie Fowlis and this version is wonderful.

Scottish Folklore Songs (Historic Recordings)
The site Tobar An Dualchais is a collection of historic audio recordings in Scotland, and that includes songs. I collected just some of the folklore related ones into a list for you all.
I have no talent in singing, so I will have to leave that up to the rest of you. Some are in English, and other are in Gaelic.
Kelpies and Each-Uisge đđ
(link) A MHĂR, A MHĂR, TILL RID MHACAN. "This song, which was used as a cradle song, was said to have been a lament composed by a water-horse(each-uisge) whose mortal lover had gone, taking their child with her. He is pleading with her to return. " (Recorded in 1956)
(link) A GHAOIL LEIG DHACHAIGH GU MO MHĂTHAIR MI "This song takes the form of a conversation between a girl and a water-horse. The girl is asking him to let her return home to her mother. The water-horse has other ideas. It is clear from the last verse that the girl escaped. " (Recorded in 1954)
(link) 'ILLE BHIG, 'ILLE BHIG SHUNNDAICH Ă "This is a fairy song. It was said to have been composed by a girl who was in love with a water-horse. As the song describes, he was killed by her brothers. The song lists some of the gifts he had promised to give the girl. " (Recorded in 1963)
Mermaids đ§ââïž
(link) ĂRAN NA MAIGHDINN-MHARA "In this song a mermaid says that she was deceived. She fell in love with a man even though he was human and she was a mermaid. Her sleep is unsettled when there is bad weather. " (Recorded in 1963)
Selkies:
(link) THE GREAT SELKIE OF SULE SKERRY "Supernatural ballad in which a woman bears a son to a selkie." (Recorded in 1973)
(link) THE SELKIE "The woman is speculating on who her baby's father is, when he appears and tells her he is Gunhaemilar and he is a selkie [seal man]. She is distraught and turns down his proposal of marriage. He tells her to nurse the baby for seven years, then he will return and pay her. He comes back and she asks him to marry her, but he rejects her in the same words she used to turn him down. He says he will put a gold chain round his son's neck so she will know him. She marries a gunner who shoots both the selkie and his son and she dies of a broken heart. " (Recorded in 1971)
(link) UNKNOWN "A Shetland song mentioning the selkies." (Recorded in 1985)
Other:
(link) MORAG'S FAIRY GLEN "Song of a man telling the beauty of Morag's Fairy Glen, and bidding his love to meet him there. " (Recorded in 1952)
(link) FAIRY DANCE "This is the reel 'Fairy Dance' played on the fiddle. " (Recorded in 1970)
(link) CRODH CHAILEIN "This song belongs to the fairy songs tradition and was used as a milking song or lullaby. Colin's cattle referred to in the song are the deer. " (Recorded in 1955)
(link) TĂLADH NA MNATHA SĂDHE "This song is a fairy cradle song in which the speaker says she would wander in the night with her beloved child. Sections of the song contain vocables which belong to the piping tradition." (Recorded in 1970)
(link) HORO 'ILLE DHUINN SHUNNDAICH "A song in which a woman tells of the murder of her fairy lover who promised her the kertch of a married woman." (Recorded in 1994) (link) Hà O Hà A RAGHNAILL UD THALL "In this fairy song, a fairy woman is trying to get a herdsman called Ronald to come across a river to her. Fairies cannot cross water." (In some stories, certain types of fairies can't cross running water) (Recorded in 1953)
(link) HĂRO 'ILLE DHUINN SHUNNDAICH "Song about a woman with a fairy lover." (Recorded in 1962)
(link) ĂRAN AN LEANNAIN-SĂTH "In this song the bard tells of being visited by a fairy lover. She asks him to make her a song, which will win an award at the Mod. He describes her beautiful appearance and sweet voice. She promises to give him a magic wand. She tells him about some of her deeds, and reminds him to make the song as she requested." What does your url mean?
Sule Skerry shows up in folklore as the home of the selkies.
My blog title had been "Pinniped Utopiae" for a while and at some point I thought that the pinniped utopia would, of course, be called Sule Skerry. So I changed it to match.

Thank you @itscomingupaces for tagging me!
1. Three ships: bingliushen, hanwenzhou, halsin/kelis/astarion
2. First ever ship: uhhhh truly impossible to say, childhood memories are hard to order and i mostly just enjoyed any and all fanworks without a specific ship in mind. maybe sesshoumaru/kagome?
3. Last song: The Ladder of Supremacy by Coheed and Cambria. it was pointed out to me how much it reads like a raphael song, and then i read haarlep into it too and it was over for me.
also, the Main Theme from Bramble: The Mountain King. i just got done playing it with my brother, it's an amazing exploration of folklore, horror, and storytelling, and the music is incredible. i'm a simple void - you incorporate a hurdy gurdy, you have my heart.
4. Last film: i'm cheating a little because i rarely watch movies and noting the one we're going to be watching tonight: Last Holiday. it's my favorite holiday movie and has such a warm wish fulfillment vibe. also i get to see nathan ford, my beloathed, get clowned on.
5. Currently reading: i just finished a multi-count re-read of The Half-Life of Element Zero by GraphiteGirl. it's one of my favorite da:i fics, a really well-thought-out crossover with mass effect, and the main character is incredibly complex and appreciable. if you have been avoiding reading it because it is unfinished, i really encourage you to try it out anyway.
6. Currently watching: i don't have the time/desire really to watch tv shows on my own, but my friends and i are slowly working through all the seasons of leverage.
7. Currently consuming: tea and chilean thousand layers cake
8. Currently craving: bĂșn thá»t nÆ°á»ng .·Ž¯`(>â<)ÂŽÂŻ`·.
going wild with the tags here: @sky-kiss @changeling-fae @selkie-of-sule-skerry @hereforanepilogue @hazelmoonwc and of course, anyone else who would like to participate.

The Selkie's Daughter - US
Brigit knows all the old songs and legends by of Neve, the daughter of the sea god; of the warrior Finn MacCool; and of people who are not quite human. But Brigit knows the truth. Itâs evident in the webbing between her fingersâ webbing that must be cut . Sheâs the daughter of a selkie. A truth she must keep secret from everyone.
But someone in her village is killing young seals. Angering the king of the selkie clan, who vows revenge. A curse that will bring storm, sickness, and death. To protect those she loves, Brigit must find a way to Sule Skerrie, the land of selkies, to confront the Great Selkie and protect the young seals from harm.

On the one hand, itâs nice to see people from all over the world enjoying old tales in new ways, and also a folk tale or creature from one culture usually has parallels or shares common motifs with tales in other cultures so itâs not totally unique.
But thereâs also something a bit sad about seeing a specific ballad or fairytale creature from your own childhood or culture all over the internet and in literature, absolutely stripped of its particular regional context, history, and tradition, and turned into a generic Fantasy Character. And it makes for a lot of conflicting feelings.
#This could literally be anything from selkies to Tam Lin with me#On the one hand I love seeing some people's new creations or discussion of wider folk motifs and parallels across the world#On the other hand these are very specific things to me#The more generic they become the less recognisable they are until the great silkie of sule skerry is no more Shetland than a Greek siren#And the old ballads from places as different as Aberdeenshire and the Borders might as well be from Kent#And don't even get me started on fairies#Which of course have very different aesthetics depending on the specific region- and the Western Isles and Berwickshire are very different#Then there's the emigrant adaptations of these stories that have mixed with other cultures in Australia; America; Canada e.t.c.#I'm fascinated by the new meanings that old fairy beliefs from Scotland and Ireland have taken on in North America#But they are not the same#And Scottish and Irish fairy beliefs though similar have some rather different characteristics too#This even extends past folklore and into history in some cases I think#If I could count the number of people who mention the North Berwick witch trials with no deep knowledge of the Scottish context#It was part of a wider European trend certainly but even the differences to nearby England were vast#Anyway I digress#That's my little bit of a moan tonight but also not really a moan#Because it's still interesting to see new adaptations and the place old stories have in a wider cultural world#I just sometimes wish that we would be more specific- sometimes I get the feeling that 90% of Scotlands ballads are called English#There are certainly English variants of many of them (and there's a huge cultural history between the two countries)#But sometimes it's important to know where the things you are using come from *specifically*#Or at least where the particular *terms* you are using come from#Anyway to change the subject and just to plug some favourites- away and look up Thomas the Rhymer (sort of a real person?)#and the Reverend Robert Kirk ('the Secret Commonwealth of Elves Fauns and Fairies')#Oh and while there's a Pullman reference- Johnny Faa was a real person#He was a sixteenth century Romani living in Scotland#He's important both in the history of the Roma in Scotland but also because of how he's portrayed in Scottish ballads#(which I think say something about both the romanticisation and also the stereotypes/fears surrounding the Roma community#among non-Romani Scots- but it's not my speciality)#There were a lot of languages and different cultures mixing in medieval Scotland is all I mean#And selkies and kelpies and brownies and red caps stem from a lot of different traditions and languages
