There are many interesting villains in fiction. In my opinion, the most interesting villains are the most self-righteous ones. There are hundreds of self-righteous villains in fiction, so this post will focus on six of them. Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) - Motivations: to save his wife (initially) and bring order to the galaxy. - Villainous acts: murder, mass murder, genocide and torture. Erik Killmonger (MCU) - Motivations: revenge against Wakanda and to liberate every oppressed group in the world. - Villainous acts: murder, tyranny, misogyny, elder abuse, destruction of cultural artifacts and attempted mass murder (including advocating filicide). Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones) - Motivations: revenge for her family and to rule the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. - Villainous acts: murder, mass murder and tyranny. Walter White (Breaking Bad) - Motivations: initially to financially support his family, later to amass power for himself. - Villainous acts: illicit drug manufacturing, murder, collaboration with drug cartels and Neo-Nazis, poisoning a child. Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias (Watchmen) - Motivations: to end the Cold War in his reality and bring about world peace. - Villainous acts: murder, mass murder and blackmail. Light Yagami (Deathnote) - Motivations: to create and rule over a crime-free world. - Villainous acts: murder, mass murder and gross psychological manipulation. The main lesson to learn from these villains is that having some good motivations does not excuse villainous actions. While some of these characters are somewhat sympathetic, they remain villains due to the evil actions they have committed.
