The Nature of Illusion and Reality in Spirituality
The verse, “सुर मुनि साधू इष्ट समान, सब जग मया भयान। स्चा संत हरि सहाय, सत भक्ति स्नेह ध्यान।” reflects the essence of spirituality, urging individuals to transcend worldly illusions and embrace the truth found in devotion. The idea expressed here is profound—saints, sages, and deities are manifestations of the same divine energy, yet the world is immersed in illusion (maya). This maya, or illusion, causes humans to become entangled in worldly distractions, losing sight of the deeper reality of divine presence.
In this context, the world we experience is a reflection of maya—an ever-changing, temporary realm that distracts us from realizing the true nature of the soul. Sant Eknath reminds us that although we may seek comfort in worldly pleasures or become attached to fleeting relationships, these pursuits cannot provide true satisfaction. The illusion of maya keeps us bound in cycles of attachment and desire, preventing us from understanding the eternal and unchanging nature of God.
True realization comes when we recognize the inherent oneness of all divine beings—whether it be saints, sages, or God Himself. When we begin to see the divine in everything and everyone, we transcend the ego and connect with something larger than ourselves. This awakening leads to the recognition that saints, supported by God, walk the path of true devotion. They are not swayed by maya; rather, they exist in a state of divine grace, immersed in meditation and sincere devotion.
The Role of Saints in Spiritual Guidance
Saints serve as the guiding lights for those trapped in maya. Their devotion is marked by simplicity, humility, and unwavering love for God. Unlike others who seek temporary gains, saints are fully devoted to the path of selfless service and devotion. Their connection with the divine is not based on ritualistic practices or external displays of piety; it stems from a deep internal relationship with God, rooted in love, surrender, and meditation.
In this verse, Sant Eknath highlights the invaluable role saints play in our spiritual journey. By aligning ourselves with saints and seeking their guidance, we move closer to God. Saints lead by example, demonstrating that true happiness lies not in worldly possessions or achievements but in devotion, surrender, and love for the divine. Through their lives, saints teach us to break free from the illusion of maya and connect with our higher selves.
The Power of Devotion and Loving Meditation
The path to breaking free from the illusion and finding inner peace lies in devotion (bhakti) and loving meditation (sneh dhyan). Bhakti is the unwavering love and dedication one offers to God, not with an expectation of rewards, but as a pure expression of love. True bhakti involves surrendering the ego, desires, and attachments, allowing the individual to become one with the divine.
Sneh dhyan, or loving meditation, is an essential part of this journey. It is not just about sitting in silence but meditating with a heart full of love and devotion. In this state, the mind transcends distractions, and the devotee experiences divine grace. Meditation done in love brings the soul closer to God and removes the layers of illusion that obscure the truth. It leads to a state of constant awareness of the divine presence, even in daily life.
A Practical Toolkit for Devotion and Meditation
To integrate these teachings into your daily life, here is a simple yet profound toolkit:
Morning and Evening Devotion: Begin and end your day with gratitude. Spend 10 minutes each morning and evening in quiet reflection or chanting God’s name. Use this time to remind yourself of the temporary nature of the world and your true connection with the divine.
Daily Meditation: Practice sneh dhyan by meditating for at least 15-20 minutes a day. Focus on the image or name of your chosen deity or saint. Let your meditation be filled with love and surrender. Over time, you will feel the presence of the divine more profoundly.
Acts of Selflessness: Follow the example of saints by incorporating acts of selflessness into your routine. Whether it’s helping others, showing kindness, or giving time to those in need, selflessness helps detach us from the illusion of selfish desires.
Company of Saints: Seek the company of those who inspire and uplift you spiritually. Whether through reading their writings, listening to their teachings, or attending spiritual gatherings, connecting with saints and sages keeps you aligned with the path of devotion.
Daily Reflection: At the end of each day, reflect on your actions. Have you acted with love, patience, and devotion? Have you recognized the divine in the people you encountered? This practice helps refine your understanding and deepens your devotion.
Looking Ahead
Sant Eknath’s teachings remind us that the world we perceive is often an illusion that can lead us astray. But through devotion, meditation, and the guidance of saints, we can break free from maya and connect with the true essence of divinity. When we live with love and devotion, the grace of God flows effortlessly into our lives, allowing us to transcend illusions and find eternal peace.

Seva: Cultivating Selflessness in Professional Life Through Spiritual Practice
In the hustle and bustle of modern professional life, where success often seems synonymous with individual achievement and personal advancement, the concept of seva offers a refreshing perspective. Rooted in spirituality, seva transcends mere duty or obligation, calling individuals to engage in selfless service for the benefit of others and the greater good. In this article, we'll delve into the essence of seva, explore its significance in the context of spirituality, and discuss how it can be integrated into our professional lives for profound personal and organizational growth.
At its core, seva embodies the principle of selflessness—acting without expectation of personal gain or recognition. It goes beyond fulfilling one's prescribed duties and extends to actively seeking opportunities to contribute to the well-being of others. In the professional realm, this translates into going above and beyond the call of duty, lending a helping hand to colleagues, and actively working towards the betterment of the organization as a whole.
Spirituality provides a rich framework for understanding the deeper significance of seva. In various religious traditions, acts of service are considered fundamental expressions of devotion and compassion. For instance, in Sikhism, the concept of seva is central to the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the faith. The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, emphasizes the importance of selfless service in numerous passages, illuminating its transformative power.
One such verse from the Guru Granth Sahib beautifully encapsulates the essence of seva:
Translated, it means:
"Millions of sinners' faces are radiant, Without serving anyone else, they become servants. Remembering millions of sins, all beings are tired and exhausted."
This verse underscores the transformative power of seva, suggesting that through selfless service, even the most sinful can find redemption and illumination.
Incorporating the practice of seva into our professional lives holds immense potential for personal and organizational growth. When individuals prioritize the well-being of their colleagues and the organization as a whole, it fosters a culture of collaboration, trust, and mutual support. Rather than viewing success as a zero-sum game, where one person's gain is another's loss, seva encourages a mindset of abundance, where everyone can thrive collectively.
Moreover, engaging in acts of selfless service can be deeply fulfilling on a personal level. Research in positive psychology has consistently shown that altruistic behavior is associated with greater levels of happiness, satisfaction, and well-being. By shifting the focus from self-interest to the welfare of others, individuals can experience a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment in their professional endeavors.
Practicing seva also cultivates essential virtues such as empathy, compassion, and humility—qualities that are increasingly valued in today's interconnected world. As professionals navigate complex challenges and interact with diverse stakeholders, these virtues become invaluable assets, enabling them to build meaningful relationships, navigate conflicts, and inspire others through their actions.
Furthermore, integrating seva into organizational culture can have far-reaching benefits, enhancing employee engagement, loyalty, and productivity. When employees feel empowered to contribute beyond their immediate responsibilities, they develop a sense of ownership and pride in their work, leading to greater overall performance and organizational success.
However, embracing the practice of seva in the professional sphere requires a fundamental shift in mindset. It entails moving away from a transactional view of work, where success is measured solely in terms of individual achievement, towards a more holistic perspective that recognizes the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of collective well-being.
Practical steps can be taken to cultivate a culture of seva within organizations. Leaders can set the tone by modelling selfless behaviour and recognizing and rewarding acts of service among employees. Additionally, initiatives such as volunteer programs, community outreach efforts, and team-building activities centered around service can foster a sense of camaraderie and unity among team members.
In conclusion, seva offers a profound path to personal and professional fulfillment, rooted in the timeless wisdom of spiritual traditions. By embracing the principle of selfless service, individuals can transcend their egos, cultivate essential virtues, and contribute to the greater good of their organizations and society at large. As we strive to navigate the complexities of modern professional life, let us remember the words of the Guru Granth Sahib and the timeless wisdom they impart:
"Through selfless service, eternal peace is obtained."
Let us embark on this journey of seva with open hearts and minds, knowing that in serving others, we ultimately serve ourselves.
Through seva, we can unlock the boundless potential within ourselves and create a more compassionate, harmonious world for all.

The Divine Power of Service: Unveiling "Seva Karo, Seva Karo, Seva Nahi Bhoolo
Saint Namdev’s doha, "Seva Karo, Seva Karo, Seva Nahi Bhoolo", translates to "Serve, serve, do not forget to serve." On the surface, this doha emphasizes the importance of service, but it goes far deeper than simply performing good deeds. Service, in the spiritual sense, is not just an action; it is a state of being. It is an alignment with the Divine, a way to dissolve the ego, and a path to transcending one’s own limited sense of self.
This doha invites us to reconsider our relationship with service. Often, service is seen as something we do for others — a charitable act, a kind gesture, or volunteering for a cause. But Sant Namdev speaks of seva as a continuous process, not a one-time act. It is a practice that can become the very fabric of our existence, infusing every moment of our lives with divine purpose.
Service as a Spiritual Practice
Spirituality is often associated with inner peace, meditation, or self-discovery, but Sant Namdev’s teaching points out that seva (selfless service) is just as essential. When we serve others, we are not merely helping them; we are serving the Divine in all beings. It is in these selfless acts that we find a deep connection with the universal consciousness.
In the process of service, we move beyond the ego, beyond the "I." When we serve without expectation, we experience a sense of unity with those we help. Service becomes a bridge between our individual selves and the collective oneness of humanity and the Divine. It is in this act that we find true spirituality — not by seeking enlightenment solely through personal growth but by uplifting others along the way.
A Shift in Perspective: Seva as Sadhana
In modern times, we often approach service as an obligation or as a means to gain recognition. Sant Namdev’s doha encourages us to break free from this mindset. Instead, service should be approached with the same reverence as meditation or prayer. It is not a duty but a sadhana (spiritual practice). Through seva, we purify our hearts and open ourselves to the grace of the Divine.
Service teaches us humility, compassion, and interconnectedness. It removes the barriers we build between ourselves and others, and it dissolves the illusion of separateness. Sant Namdev’s call to “serve, serve, do not forget to serve” reminds us that we are all one in the eyes of the Divine. Every act of service is a way to honor that truth.
The Divine Ripple Effect
One of the most profound realizations in the path of seva is the ripple effect it creates. Every small act of service sends out waves of positivity that touch the lives of others in ways we may never know. When we offer kindness, help, or support, we become instruments of the Divine’s love, contributing to a greater, collective well-being.
Sant Namdev’s doha speaks to the importance of consistency in service. It is not enough to serve once and then move on. Continuous service, done with love and devotion, creates a steady flow of positive energy that transforms not just those we help but our own spiritual evolution. When we serve, we become vessels through which the Divine operates.
Practical Toolkit for Incorporating Seva into Daily Life
Sant Namdev’s teaching on service is not meant to remain theoretical; it’s a call to action. Here’s a practical toolkit to integrate seva into your everyday life:
Seva with Intention:
Start each day by setting an intention to serve. This could be in the form of small gestures like helping someone at work, listening to a friend, or offering a compliment. The key is to bring awareness and purpose into your service.
Seva Without Expectation:
Practice serving others without expecting anything in return. This is the core of seva. Release the need for validation or praise and simply offer your help as an act of love.
Service in Silence:
Perform acts of service quietly, without announcing them to the world. Silent service keeps the ego in check and focuses on the purity of the act rather than recognition.
Infuse Service into Routine Tasks:
You don’t have to wait for a special moment to serve. Turn mundane tasks like cleaning, cooking, or working into opportunities for seva. Approach them with the mindset that you’re serving the Divine in those around you.
Compassionate Listening:
One of the greatest acts of service is simply listening. When someone shares their troubles, resist the urge to offer advice or fix things. Instead, offer your full presence and compassion. Listening itself is a form of seva.
Extend Seva to Nature:
The Earth is part of the Divine creation. Extend your service to the environment by planting trees, cleaning up a local park, or simply treating nature with care and respect.
Daily Affirmation of Seva:
Use this affirmation to align yourself with the spirit of service: “I am here to serve, with no expectations. Through service, I honor the Divine in all.”
Volunteer Regularly:
Commit to volunteering in your community, whether it’s at a shelter, school, or hospital. Regular acts of organized service will strengthen your connection to seva as a spiritual practice.
Reflect on Seva at the End of Each Day:
Take time each evening to reflect on how you served others throughout the day. Ask yourself: “Did I serve selflessly today? Where can I serve more effectively tomorrow?”
Serve Your Family First:
Often, we forget that seva begins at home. Practice small acts of service within your family — cooking, supporting, or offering love and kindness. These acts are as spiritually significant as larger, public displays of service.
A Life Lived in Service
Sant Namdev’s doha, "Seva Karo, Seva Karo, Seva Nahi Bhoolo", invites us to live a life of continuous service, not as a task but as a spiritual path. When we serve without expectation, we unlock the highest expression of devotion and connect with the Divine in all beings. Through service, we grow spiritually, helping others while also transforming ourselves.
By making service an integral part of your daily routine, you align with a greater purpose. Service isn’t just about what we give to others — it’s about who we become in the process. Seva is the ultimate expression of love, a path to Divine union, and a way to transcend the ego. Let your life be a testament to Sant Namdev’s timeless wisdom: serve, serve, and never forget to serve.
