The Legacy of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor after moving to Calcutta, India. Founding the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, she provided shelter, care, and dignity to the sick and dying. Despite facing criticism, her unwavering compassion earned her global recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Her legacy continues through her order, embodying selfless service and love.

一國一事-西班牙

為了紀念15個月旅行，決定用這個空間記錄下一些值得記得的事情。每個國家一個故事。在2021-2022年旅行去了10個國家。世界太大時間太短。還在記憶力的多數不是什麼名勝古蹟，而是和那裡的人和事的連結。

第一個去的國家是西班牙，大概是因為學西班牙語，所以總說自己想去西班牙。索性第一站就去吧，並留在馬德里一個月學習西班牙語。住在一個airbnb叔叔家，在附近找到了missionaries of charity的街友飯堂，mother teresa創辦的慈善機構。鼓起勇氣，跑到機構，已經關門，看見人大聲問能不能做義工。義工找來身穿藍白的修女說你週末來吧，早晨9:30。從此我就每週末兩個半天去那裡準備飯盒。我用我幼兒園的西班牙語和大家交流，大家也不嫌棄。聽懂了就給他們反應。大家都很高興。我的工作很簡單，就是把不同的地方捐贈的食物分裝，方便派發給街友。修女們負責做飯，義工們負責處理食物。在裡面修女只給最最基本的引導，你幫忙包這個然後你就跟著大家一起做。義工會互相指導，沒人知道如何是最權威的，大家用自己覺得最好的方式工作。反正看到哪裡需要幫忙我就走過去，請旁邊的人教我，然後就跟著一起做。

在簡單重複的工作中回和旁邊的人聊天，認識他們。在廚房拔雞毛的時候，和做文物修復的paloma聊了兩個小時，溝通真的不只是靠語言，也認識了她的先生，他先生會英文所以一開始也幫我融入不少。每週見面也增進友誼，我厚臉皮申請去她家做客。paloma也很高興接待我，他們準備了西班牙特色的飯菜，和他們的5個小孩一起吃飯聊天，他們對中國充滿好奇，飯桌上不停地問問題，很可愛。paloma和先生已經在MC做義工25年，而且在結婚時有一張有mother teresa親手簽名的祝福。問她長久婚姻幸福的秘訣是什麼，她說有共通的目標，同在神內。不知為何很愛他們，再回到馬德里時也忍不住要約他們出來吃飯。

說到MC不得不說說那些可愛的修女，她們來自不同地方，也常被派駐在不同的國家。有印度的，菲律賓，也有歐洲國家的。她們說貧窮在所有國家都一樣，再發達的地方也是。在馬德里的MC飯堂開飯前兩個小時就會有人在門口排隊。很多看起來來自不同國家的人。因為疫情的原因他們不能坐在飯堂吃飯，拿了之後就離開了。修女們會因應收到的捐贈食材烹飪。某次做了滷雞腿，我邊分雞腿邊流口水，誇讚了修女說聞起來超級香。第二天，她就在塞了一個包好的熱呼呼的雞腿到我圍裙里，太可愛。某個修女還分了她自己種的印度辣椒給我。

在MC沒有人說你一定要做這個或那個，每個人盡自己的能力，人多有人多的做，人少有人少的做，也不缺你，你來了大家也很高興。就像上帝的做工，也不缺你那份，但你負擔起來神也很高興。

Why did you write Redeemed by Beauty? And how long did it take to do so? Did you anticipate the amount of research required?

Br. Andrew was an Australian Jesuit priest. How did he come to be involved in the work of Mother Teresa?

How was Br. Andrew able to draw many young men, often from backgrounds very different from his own, into a fledgling and sometimes daunting religious order?

Can you tell us about Br. Andrew’s shattering experience in Vietnam?

What are some of the factors that led to Br. Andrew leaving the order that he helped to found? And how is it that he nonetheless continued to live in the MC spirit?

What ministries do the Missionary Brothers pursue today?

You are currently working with the mentally challenged and the mentally ill in Peru, a country which is now experiencing dangerous political unrest. What can you tell us about your work?

Like Br. Andrew, you continue to preach Christ and Him crucified in a Church that struggles with its own disunity. What resources do you draw on in order to remain faithful to your vocation?

How will you celebrate Easter this year?

Redeemed by Beauty is, in Brother Andrew’s own words, the story of “an unfaithful man used by God.” It is the biography of Ian Travers-Ball who felt called to share his life with the poor. After joining the Jesuit order, as an ordained priest in India, he moved on to co-found – together with Mother Teresa of Calcutta – the Missionaries of Charity Brothers. This book follows Andrew on this path from gambler to troubadour to sannyasi. It is the human struggle for wholeness and holiness through helplessness, powerlessness, fragility and woundedness. Andrew’s hallmark and uniqueness would be his closeness to and identification with the hidden and suffering people. It is the inner journey of a soul in need of redemption. Together with God, Our Lady and the Church, the poor were the main agents of grace in Brother Andrew’s life.
