Chapter 29: 1808

England reached the town square and stopped, his gut wrenching. Against the white walls of the houses, dried blood painted a path of struggle and defeat. Splatters brushed outwards where bullets pierced the mortar, thin spindly cracks revealing the fractured red bricks underneath. On the steps of the church on the other side, pools of dried blood had become brown stains where people had been rounded up inside and cornered, pews overthrown, pushed against one another, brown stains and splatters on the altar that was now missing the images of its saints.
