Title: Linger
Chapter One: In the Shadow of a Friend
Fandom: Hogwarts Legacy
Main Characters: Selena Calderon (OC), Ominis Gaunt
Pairing: Pre!Ominis Gaunt x Selena Calderon
Warnings: Angst, hurt/comfort
Notes: A short story inspired by Hogwarts Legacy. Some liberties were taken and certain events will not follow the original story within the game beat for beat. Characters have been aged a year (6th year).
Summary: Selena Calderón was a fool to yearn for a man she could not keep. Ominis Gaunt was too sanguine to think he could keep their hands clean. Sebastian Sallow was the sting that once held all three together. And, in the wake of his absence everything around Ominis and Selena was unraveling. The two were lingering for a friend in the hopes they could save him from Azkaban.
As the Great Hall rang quietly with booming cheers and choral laughter, the broken duo of three sought refuge outside grand doors and in the laps of the frigid stone seats echoed hushed sounds of a warm spring night. Thoughts flitted to and fro, grasping onto ‘what ifs' and ‘I should have done this,’ but none led to glorious alternatives where the conclusion of a whirlwind friendship could end in any way other than this. Reminiscent as they might be, Ominis and Selena would always find themselves sitting in the engulfing silence of a void, searching for its missing, cheeky master.
When did it all go wrong?
How did all the roads lead them here?
Hadn’t they been through enough?
Why had it taken her five days to gather the strength often associated with her and her Gryffindor classmates to confront him?
Selena wasn’t proud to admit she had avoided him in his time of need, but the weight that came with the decision to grant her friend freedom or damnation needed more consideration. She wanted a moment more to reflect on everything— find a way to make sense of her friend’s participation in the destruction of his family. She needed the chance to understand how his fixation on a mythical remedy stirred his deep-rooted desperation into action and confidently kill a man. Selena could pretend Solomon’s death did not happen. She could say she had not seen the tendrils of dark magic that propelled Sebastian into committing this unfortunate accident. To lie on his behalf was dangerous. Yet, one softened gaze and a slew of long-winded praises had Selena caving.
How did this brown, bleary-eyed boy lead her into temptation?
The further she had fallen, the easier it became to forsake salvation. Selena should have given her answer that night in the Undercroft once the dust settled and the traces of death had been cleaned off. She could put on a show and speak words of pretend, but Sebastian was no fool. He had to know she’d come around in the end. It was futile for Selena to try and escape him. She had signed the contract, and made a pledge to have her wings clipped and join him in his descent from the heavens.
Ominis was no better.
It had taken Selena absolutely zero effort to convince him they did not need to turn Sebastian in. A few choice words, and Ominis had plunged off the edge of paradise with them. They were in too deep, a pair of fools who found ways to sink deeper into the ocean and continue drowning. Try as he might, Selena suspected Ominis wouldn’t be capable of keeping up his pretenses against the use of Dark Magic after this. The duo had willingly given up their crusade just to have Sebastian stay.
So selfish.
Selena had awoken that morning feeling relieved with the decision made. All sense of anxiety had been stripped away, and she was ready to start her day with her two closest friends. Selena and Ominis agreed to unite together during breakfast. They would stand before Sebastian and assure him all was forgiven and forgotten. Everything would ease itself back into place. Her excitement had fluttered through every nerve beneath her skin. Selena was ready to return to Sebastian’s orbit and fall instep with each of his strides, hands intertwined, as a silent guide on his journey to redemption. They could have carried on with the rest of their year like nothing had happened.
But Ominis had been right all along.
They'd become consumed by the very magic they had thought would help them. They had been foolish and dumb to believe in any other outcome, and now the world would still continue on. It meant nothing to anyone around them that they had lost Sebastian.
"I miss him." Selena finally acknowledged.
"I'm surprised you do,"  Ominis murmured in reply. "Did you not have to contemplate on whether to send him to Azkaban or not?"
It was a bitter quip Selena knew her companion meant no true harm with. He couldn't help it. There was a missing link rattling on beside them- clinking and snapping into the empty space of a young man their memories tried to hide from. The two could only watch as a bubbling potion threatened to spill over and flood them with unwanted emotions. Sebastian was a fool for willingly giving them up to fulfill a far fetched dream.
"You did too." Pathetic. Remorseful. A three-word knife she had hoped to dig into him too. Ominis was as much to blame even if he chose to be cruel.
Yet, he still spoke some truth.
Selena could tell the world around them her loyalty to Sebastian stood strong and unwavering. No amount of rumors or questioning could sweep her away from him, but Ominis was right- again. She had been shaken. Doubts and reexaminations lead Selena astray for a brief moment. The devotion she held for Sebastian had become cracked with the subconscious agreement he had gone too far- he had become a murderer.
"Do you know where they might be keeping him?" She tried again.
"You can't be that dimwitted." Quick. Sharp. Vicious. An automatic reply fueled by the bitterness of a loss she knew Ominis, nor she,  was ready to admit.
Exasperated, Selena sighed and returned just as quickly with, "Aren't you a Gaunt and a Slytherin?"
She watched him close his eyes with just as much exacerbated patience as the hypocritical grin threatening to spill across his face. Try as he might, Ominis could never burrow himself far enough behind his haughty Slytherin mask. It was a harder task to bring the man back to the forefront, but Selena would always be able to crash into his solitary fortitude and find him. Even now, with Sebastian gone and their wounded hearts quietly weeping out of them, Selena removed the veil draping Ominis.
She would be a fool to lose him for not doing so too.
"What are we going to do?"
"The one thing that seems to escape the two of you. Nothing."
"Nothing!" She laughed. "Did you forget what house I'm in?"
Her companion shook his head with mocking disappointment. As brave and brash as she might be, Selena knew those Gryffindor labels would only lead to more misery. Sebastian had made his decision, and maybe, finally, she should take this small reprieve for the new beginning it could be. For the first time since she stepped into these halls, Selena wasn't at someone's will or something's beck and call. The circumstances in which she found this brief moment of peace were not ideal. However, she couldn't deny the spark of relief that slowly wandered through her.
How deviously Slytherin of Ominis for awakening dreams of hope within the dark corridors of dread.
Selena didn't argue with him further.
Instead, she chose to chase the heated coals emitting from his skin and cuddle into the calmness it provided.  For a cursory moment, it dawned on her the strangeness of being so close to him. Somewhere in the recesses of her thoughts, the ignored thread uniting them glowed brightly. It sat there hissing sweet promises in the hopes she would allow it to slither out from the dormant parts of her mind. Selena had been too afraid to tug on it and set it free. Though, she would quietly admit under veritaserum that this string was much easier to fall in line with than the one tying her to Sebastian.
Perhaps that's why she was instinctively led to lightly dance her fingers across Ominis' hands. Feather-like touches ignited the illuminating fibers of the thread, scorching hotter and deeper as if desperately trying to leave memorable imprints of it for both of them to see. The intimacy of an act such as this kept Selena grounded. She could forget about him and enjoy the comfort Ominis provided. Whatever this was between them, Ominis seemed to bask in it. He didn't offer up any signs of discomfort with her newfound familiarity with every dip and curve of his. Ominis seemed to relish the way all of Selena's attention was now focused on him.
Could it be he was seeking the same peace he had so freely given by allowing her to be so close? The questioning of it stopped any more movement.
What was she doing? Ominis wasn't Sebastian. They were friends, yes, but that didn't mean she'd fill the gaps abandoned by another for an unexplored whim. To crave the contact of someone she had just barely shared her secrets with? No. She couldn't do this. Not now. Not when she would rather suffer through the ravenous terrain that could possibly lead her back to the one who did know all of her. Sebastian had been taken, and here she was ready to give up on him.
Selena couldn't continue to sit here with Ominis.
The guilt had finally caught up. Their dearest friend was waiting for someone to save him. As hopeful and free as she might be beneath the blanket of stars and hidden away from everybody, Selena needed to follow that fraying thread still tying her to Sebastian.
Abruptly, she stood up with an explanation and a plea on her tongue. The end of their friendship didn't have to be their only outcome. He had to know that Sebastian wasn't completely out of their grasp. He hadn't truly left them because he wanted to. A mistake had been made, as horrendous as it was, but Sebastian was not lost. They just needed to show him the way home- back to them.
Come with me! Let's go get him! She planned to tell Ominis, rushing to stand tall and unwavering, but making no move to relinquish her hand's hold on him.
"Nothing." Ominis hissed before she could get swept away in her fantasy.
What?
She was thunderstruck. How could he read her so easily? Why was she the only one feeling this urgency? She couldn't breathe. This was all too much.  Selena only wanted their circle to be complete again, not continue on with this empty phantom walking beside them.
The sorrowful ache slowly became easier to reside in.
Tightly Ominis tugged on her stiffen hand, pulling Selena back down to earth with him. He tenderly trapped Selena within a steel embrace and whispered hotly into her ear, "We are doing nothing."
"But-"
"For now at least."
  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Closing his eyes, Ominis allowed another small grin to crawl across his face. Some things never changed, not with this foolhardy Gryffindor girl, he had become intimately melded with. Selena and all her witty kindness were a constant he could count on. Her presence was the blinding light breaking through a cloudy obsidian sight and mourned as he might be, Ominis scoffed at how easily Sebastian set her free. What a fool his friend had been to sacrifice himself for the brief satisfaction of a spurious wish.
It wasn't that Ominis hadn't understood it. Family was important. Blood meant everything. Anne had been his friend too. However, love of any kind was an obsessive sickness no one could save themselves from. He had seen just how far such a monster would bloody its claws to try and spread its disease. The infection festered and brewed within the hearts of even the strongest men and women of Wizarding kind. Sebastian was no different than any other who had overdosed from the weight of an ineffable addiction.
Ominis would not let lust like that control him.
That's what separated him from his eldest friend.
Sebastian was chasing after a tantalizing fantasy he could only cherish in his dreams. It was an illusion, a brief glimpse of what could be, but nothing one could physically conquer in reality.
Except for Ominis.
The key to beating love at its game was to set such a greedy thing free from its cell so it became a corporeal entity. That was why he'd relish the way sides softly swayed against his. How he could allow fingers to gently whisper across his pale hands, and welcome the warmth radiating from every dip and curve of a body thoroughly familiar to his own. He would not be steered beyond the towering walls of Hogwarts. He would not be taken away from her.
Yes, Sebastian would be missed. Ominis had no doubts about it. There would always be a lingering space that only Sebastian could fit. Six years of friendship did not simply vanish, as much as his dear friend seemed to wish. He was grieving, Ominis knew this, but it was too late for his eldest friend to wash the blood clean from his hands. Dark magic had sunken its claws into Sebastian, raked itself so deep that the task of ridding the other from it would be a war Ominis did not think Selina was ready for.
Clearing the name of a murderer required a delicate plan.
Selena, so eager and ready to follow after Sebastian, would need to wait. Now wasn't the time to run off like a pair of fools trying to quiet a mandrake. This new information Professor Black had given only led to further speculation. What had gone on in those office walls for their friend to be taken? Surely Anne wasn't the one to condemn Sebastian?
An unnerving thought Ominis did not want.
He didn't want to ponder the potential of perfidy any longer.
For now, he'd let the fires burn out before striking. And though protest hung upon full pink lips, Selena would have to trust him. Ominis needed more time to figure out how to fix this. Their brief pause was a small gift he'd hoped she could accept. Cool and bright as she might be, burrowed within his arms, Ominis would need her leashed until dawn could shine on all three of them again.
"Ominis?" she whispered once her fire had been doused and the sounds of the Great Hall had finally come to a stall. He waited for a moment longer, only showing his acknowledgement of her by softly stroking away the cold as it tried to quietly creep into the hold they had on each other. Ominis could feel hesitancy commanding her. She cuddled herself deeper in the circle of his arms, and fiddled with the clasps of his cloak this way and that way. Soundlessly she found tasks to keep herself from running away and finding the courage to say,
"The Aurors casted Legilemens during their interrogation with me today."
"They what! Did you tell Headmaster Black about this?"
"No, I...didn't think to."
"Didn't think to? Selena, they aren't allowed to use Legilimency on students! I know you're not familiar with every policy in the Wizarding World, but surely your beloved Professor Fig has mentioned this to you?"
A brief pause had welcomed itself in. The ease they had been unknowingly fostering exploded apart. Ominis hadn't meant any harm by his comment, but Selena's attachment to the professor wasn't lost on him. The cessation, however, startled Ominis.
"I wasn't thinking, okay?" She had growled out before feebly stepping out of his arms. "One minute I'm talkin' to them and the next I can feel someone tryin' to jump inside my head. It was the strangest thing I've ever felt and when I finally pushed them out, I wasn't exactly worried about telling Professor Black what'd happen.  I just wanted to make sure I didn't give them anything to use against Sebastian."
"You pushed them out?"
"Yes. Or, at least I think so? Honestly, I'm not sure what I did. I just wanted them out."
"Out? But that does- I'm not sure I quite follow?"
"Uh, well, yes, out. I honestly don't understand the logistics of it myself but all I know  is I wanted them out of my head. I could feel them forcing their way in and my magic just reacted, and um, kinda sent the poor man flying."
"Flying!"
"Look." Selena sighed, clearly put out over Ominis' interrogation, "I have a headache and am not in the mood to deal with all of this right now."
He had let a frown settle onto his face despite wishing to push his friend further. So many revelations had disturbed Ominis' understanding of the situation, and he couldn't fathom what direction the duo should partake in. Is this what Selena was trying to say to him? Could there truly be  something bigger brewing than the Aurors had stated?
"Ominis." She comforted, voice soft with affection. "I'm alright."
Ah.
Maybe that was where he could start? Ominis couldn't help Sebastian at the moment, but he was at least capable of this. Selena was always the strongest, yet it would seem even she needed some protection.
"I know." Ominis reassured, opening his arms and drawing her back in- hoping to erase the distance Selena created. "That is why I am going to teach you Occlumens."

Author's Note: So here it is! Excuse the short mess that this is, but I hope you enjoy it. I don't anticipate this being a long work as the story is pretty much planned out, yet one can never really know. With that being said, I hope to have chapters out every  other Friday. Additionally, please let me know if you see any grammar errors. I tried sweeping though to correct things, but contrary to belief English majors aren't always Grammar queens. Anyhow, I do hope you like the story :)

E U O N I A : An Eva Calderon Playlist [ L I S T E N     H E R E  ]
WRITING CHALLENGE 001: PLAYLIST @parabellumrpg
I HAVE A DREAM | LILY JAMES (MAMMA MIA 2)
“I have a dream, a fantasy To help me through reality And my destination makes it worth the while Pushing through the darkness still another mile”
This song is the embodiment of who Eva is as a person. As one of the lyrics goes, “something good in everything I see”, this aligns with how Eva chooses to see the world and those around her. She sees the good in everyone and everything and does not judge another based on someone else’s opinion. She will always come to her own conclusion about someone and will not harbor ill will towards them unless they have done or said something that changes how she sees them.
HERE COMES THE SUN | THE BEATLES
“Here comes the sun Here comes the sun, and I say It's all right“
Eva is the sun in this song that The Beatles sing about. If you looked Eva Calderon up in the dictionary the lyrics above would be listed beside her name.
¿QUÉ SE SIENTE QUE ME GUSTES TANTO? | DANIEL, ME ESTÁS MATANDO  Translation: How Does It Feel That I Like You So Much?
“¿Qué se siente que me gustes tanto, amor? Que debo de aceptar que Tengo miedo de tu encanto ¿Qué se siente que me gustes tanto, amor? Que si un día tú te vas con alguien más Yo voy también”
Translation: “ How does it feel that I like you so much, love That I must accept that  I'm afraid of your charms How does it feel that I like you so much, love That if one day you go with someone else I go too”
This is Eva when she is in love with someone and the fear of giving her heart fully to them is very present because she does not know how receptive they will be. Will her love measure up to them/what they want or will they just be two estranged hearts held in beings.
¡QUE BONITO! | ROSARIO
“Qué bonito cuando te veo ahí Qué bonito cuando te siento Qué bonito pensar que estás aquí Junto a mí”
Dedicated to @joaquin-aleman. It is the song that the two danced to on the night that set two hearts beating in time into motion. Their first dance together and first kiss was done to this song. While that night did not end well, it ended abruptly, awkwardly and with so much unspoken, Eva will always associate this song with Joaquín.
WITHOUT YOU | LESLIE ODOM JR. (RENT)
“Without you The ground thaws The rain falls The grass grow”
For Eva, this song means that the world keeps turning, life goes on and everything grows, but you don't without the people in your life who mean something to you.
FIRST MAN | CAMILA CABELLO
“I swear on my heart That he's a good man I know you'll stay up late Just waiting for me You held me so tight Now someone else can But you were the first man that really loved me“
Dedicated to Eva’s father. This song is all about telling her father that the man she is with is a good man and that it is because of her father’s unconditional, unwavering and unquestionable love she is able to be in love and have someone love her in return. It is all the love she has for her father and for him showing her how a man should love and treat her in one song.
SHE USED TO BE MINE | SARA BAREILLES (WAITRESS)
“It's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true”
While Eva’s circumstances are different than Jenna’s they are both coming to terms with things in their life that did not go according to plan. Eva has to reconcile with the differences in how she thought her life was going to go and how it actually ended up. What she has to reconcile is that she always thought her parents would be in the same country as her and only a stone’s throw away.
HAPPY & SAD | KACEY MUSGRAVES
“Is there a word for the way that I'm feeling tonight? Happy and sad at the same time You got me smiling with tears in my eyes I never felt so high No, I've never been this far off of the ground And they say everything that goes up must come down But I don't wanna come down“
This is the song version of the feeling of finally letting someone in again. The joy of the moment is washing over Eva, but she knows, deep down, she still might have to brace herself for the worst.
TREAT PEOPLE WITH KINDNESS | HARRY STYLES
“Maybe we can find a place to feel good And we can treat people with kindness Find a place to feel goodGivin' second chances I don't need all the answers Feelin' good in my skin I just keep on dancin'”
The title says it all. This is one Eva’s motto’s, treat people with kindness, and she truly does her best to live by it. Eva would the human version of Kill Them With Kindness. This is also just a really great bop that Eva would blare in her home and dance to while cleaning.
DANCE AGAIN | SELENA GOMEZ
“Happiness Ain't something you sit back and you wait for Mm-mm, ah-ah Confidence Is throwing your heart through every brick wall Mm-mm, ah-ah”
This song is all about how happiness is something that must actively be sought out and that self-confidence is manifest by her casting aside all timidity. That is something relatable to just about everyone and especially Eva in her younger years and how she transitioned to just owning everything about her and dancing away her troubles. This is also another one of those songs she would get up and dance to.
SOUTH OF THE BORDER | ED SHEERAN FT. CAMILLA CABELLO
“She got the, mm, brown eyes, caramel thighs Long hair, no wedding ring, hey I saw you lookin' from across the way And now I really wanna know your name She got the, mm, white dress, but when she's wearin' less Man, you know that she drives me crazy The, mm, brown eyes, beautiful smile You know I love watching you do your thing”
Honestly, this song is how I see the different men who have been with Eva and have loved her view her. It is a song full of sex appeal and I love it for her. This is her “sexy” descriptive song. This song, like others I have mentioned, are ones she has 100% danced to and just had fun to.
STUCK WITH U | ARIANA GRANDE WITH JUSTIN BIEBER
“There's nowhere we need to be No, no, no Imma get to know you better Kinda hope we're here forever There's nobody on these streets If you told me that the world's ending Ain't no other way that I can spend it”
This song is about being “stuck” with the person you love and how there is no one else you would rather be stuck with. I feel that it fits how Eva looks at loving someone else because you are suppose to love them in spite of all their faults. Being stuck with something isn’t a bad thing when it is them, that person that makes the world a brighter and better place.
SUNFLOWER, VOL. 6 | HARRY STYLES
“Sunflower Sunflower My eyes Want you more than a melody Let me inside Wish I could get to know you”
Honestly, this song I chose for her because of the title as I see her as a sunflower, always facing up towards the sun and following its path rather than drooping to the ground like other flowers in the world when the sun isn’t on them. I also chose it because it is a great song and maybe someone out there would use this song to describe them with her.
BARCELONA | ED SHEERAN
“And you and I we're flying on an aeroplane tonight We're going somewhere where the sun is shining bright Just close your eyes And let's pretend we're dancing in the street In Barcelona Barcelona Barcelona Barcelona”
The song that gets her feet, hips and hands moving. This is the song that can come on anywhere and she will want to dance to it unapologetically.
BE KIND | MARSHMELLO WITH HALSEY
“I know you're chokin' on your fears Already told you I'm right here I will stay by your side every nightI don't know why you hide from the one And close your eyes to the one Mess up and lie to the one that you love When you know you can cry to the one Always confide in the one You can be kind to the one that you love”
What this song gets down to is that Eva will always be there for those who believe that she should not be and that she shouldn’t love them. COUGH COUGH @joaquin-aleman. She will stay by your side every night.

✎ BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Born to Marisol Riviera-Calderon and Miguel Calderon, an English teacher and an architect, Ariella grew up in a low-upper class. Money was never something her family ever worried about, though they did not live extravagantly and Ari was always taught to be kind, compassionate, and most of all, humble. Growing up as an only child, Ariella was the apple of her parents’ eye, and any and every whim she ever could’ve had was encouraged and supported. In her childhood, she tried activities such as dance, gymnastics, cheerleading, and baton twirling. While she still dances occasionally, as she grew she began to focus more on the cheerleading and gymnastics aspects of her training. Ariella was also very focused on her studies, always coming in near the top of every class.
Having an English teacher for a mother, Ariella grew up with a love of books, reading, and writing as well. Always aspiring to be just like her biggest role model, her mother, she recently graduated from university with her degree in Secondary English Education. Although never really involved with romantic relationships, Ariella remains a complete and total virgin. Throughout school, she was a very straight laced girl, never wanting to disappoint her parents or ruin her potential future. She never so much as earned herself a detention or reprimand from anyone. However, her squeaky-clean image was tarnished during her senior year of high school, when during the one and only date she was ever asked on requested she accompany him to a party.
There, Ariella’s drink was spiked, and the individual took advantage of her, even taking pictures without her consent. Although he didn’t go all the way, he did enough. Word got around, and she was labeled a ‘slut’ by the same people who’d voted her Student Council President two years in a row. Embarrassed and ashamed, Ariella became a hermit, and is still very shy and unsure of how to create connections. Seeing an opportunity for escape, following her graduation from college (for the duration of which she lived with her parents), Ariella moved across the country to Florida, where she rented a small apartment and landed her first teaching gig. Unfortunately, bad luck followed her. A year and a half into her new life, an old classmate moved into town and took a job at the same school she was teaching at, as the Phys Ed. teacher. In no time at all, it was proven the individual possessed no shame and no maturity and within no time at all, those old photos were leaked to the entire faculty, staff, and student body. Ariella found herself completely shamed. Having never sought therapy after the incident, and having been humiliated once again, it was suggested to her by the Superintendent of her school system that she seek treatment at Dalton.
Having no real plan and feeling as though she’ll never be able to move forward from the shame she’s felt, Ari packed up and moved in as a Resident. Completely and utterly Submissive in every sense of the word, Ariella is compassionate, empathetic, and an all-around sweetheart. However, at her worst, she is shy, quiet, a wallflower, and incredibly unsure of herself.

Chapter Three (finally...)
Title: Linger
Chapter Three: Lessons, Letters, and the Restricted Section Pt. 1
Fandom: Hogwarts Legacy
Main Characters: Selena Calderon (OC), Ominis Gaunt
Pairing: Pre!Ominis Gaunt x Selena Calderon
Warnings:  Angst, hurt/comfort
Notes:  A short story inspired by Hogwarts Legacy. Some liberties were taken and certain events will not follow the original story within the game beat for beat. Characters have been aged a year (6th year).
Summary:  Selena Calderón was a fool to yearn for a man she could not keep. Ominis Gaunt was too sanguine to think he could keep their hands clean. Sebastian Sallow was the string that held all three together. And, in the wake of his absence everything around Ominis and Selena was unraveling. Try as they might, they could not live life without him. Selena would not be left lingering for a friend who might be on his way to Azkaban. A short story about the struggles of moving on, finding new love and realization.
Previous Chapter: Chapter Two
“It's more than just ‘pushing someone out,’ you know." Ominis began. “Occlumency is completely shielding one’s mind against a Legilimens. Or those trying to access your thoughts and feelings so they may influence you.”
He paused here, seemingly aggravated by an unknown entity Selena couldn’t protect him from. His hands, which once were melded into her own, had begun to fight with the rest of him. Open. Close. They dragged themselves up and down the wool fabric— never finding a place to rest. Selena itched to return to the closeness they once shared, but Ominis had pushed them apart. It was a reminder, a small warning to the both of them that their journey to the Room of Requirement wasn’t some friendly get-together.
He was to teach her another way to survive, just as Sebastian had before.
It hadn’t appeared prevalent then, but the  Auror’s use of Occlumency had stirred an inferno within Ominis.  Selena had been attacked prior to this one instance. She had found herself on the end of a wand countless times, so adding another aggression against her to the list wasn’t much of a feat if she was honest, but Ominis was furious. His anger and heat were things she had learned to become unfamiliar with. What caused him to become so motivated to protect her from this one thing when it was unlikely Selena would be assaulted again? What was he not sharing with her?
When he started anew, Selena felt even more lost than when he first proposed she learned to become an Occlumens. “As you know, my family and I are Purebloods, the elite of the elite, in part to Salazar Slytherin’s blood flowing through us.  As a child, I never thought much of it, but for the rest of my family, this was the divine proof of our superiority. It—it was so stupid, honestly. This way of thinking just fostered bitterness and jealousy.
Aunt Noctua was different, though. Before—she disappeared, shouldering their disgusting beliefs was easy. While my family was not what you would call homely, Aunt Noctua made everything within the manner’s walls more lively. I’d probably gone mad if she wasn’t there to constantly rescue me from their insanity. Especially when I let it be known how much I didn’t care about blood purity. Or my lack of regard for following an ideology that tortured others for the pleasure of it. I was much more interested in Aunt Noctua’s stories and the muggle equivalent of Herbology.”
“Gardening? You garden?”
“Yes, or well, I used to. It was the only thing I truly shared with my mother. It's not exactly the same thing, though. Merlin forbid, my mother got on her hands and knees to plant some daisies or whatnot, but the act of breathing life into new seedlings or listening to the whispers of all the different flowers around us was exhilarating.”
His face had lightened up at the small memory, and an unspoken sense of relief flooded Selena as whatever troubled him early seemed to be fading. “That sounds beautiful, Ominis. I really wish I could see it.”
“I wish I could show you,” he agreed. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t exist anymore.”
“Oh! I’m sorry. What— what happened to it?” His hands began again. Open. Close. Up. Down. They were burning themselves into his slacks. “It's okay. You don’t need to share with me, Ominis.”
The young man just shook his head.
A few long moments passed as Ominis tried to steady himself. Words came and went, floating in a hazy mess as they tried to straighten themselves into phrases of reassurance. None of them, however, wanted to be spoken. So, Selena did the only thing she could do, take hold of his moving hands and shield them with her own.
 “How strange.”
“Who? Me?”
“Yes,” Ominis laughed. “You and Anne have only met a handful of times, yet you both comfort your friends the same.”
“We do?” Selena croaked unsurely. He gave her another nod and radiant smile. Their similarities appeared to bring him further peace. Something she knew should make her happy. Ominis had shared another piece of himself— a beautiful memory that was meant to bring them closer, and they did. She was honored he felt so comfortable with her. They were friends, and that was how things were supposed to be.
So why did she feel the need to drop his hands and leave because he found serenity in her and Anne’s commonalities?
“Hm. Anne could never let things lie. She always made sure Sebastian and I knew we had somebody. You’re the same way, just a little less refined and brash.” Ominis teased. “It's the Gryffindor in you, I suppose. Always running into things without thinking. I can see why Sebastian found you so entertaining.”
“I live to please, I guess.”
“Well, either way, I must say I am grateful for it. Your friendship and theirs.  All of you are more of a family to me than my own.”
“Ominis, I—”
“Don’t. I’m alright.” He gripped her hands tighter and at last brought their separation to an end. “There’s no true love between my family and I. To them, you were only important for the blood you carried and the marriages you’d make. My siblings and I knew nothing but rage and pain. We were made to practice all the Unforgivables on one another so that we may one day use them against all the muggle-borns and blood traitors for tainting the beauty of our society.”
“That’s horrible!”
“It was my life until I came here, to Hogwarts, and met Sebastian and Anne.  I was never any good with them, and when I was successful, they only worked because of my anger towards having to cast it. I couldn’t understand how it came so easily for everyone. People like my older brother, Marvolo, relished in his use of them— even when he’d use it on us younger siblings. He found joy and power, but I couldn’t see anything but the horror of it. I’ll never be able to forgive myself for utilizing my turmoil and disgust to harm such innocent people. However, there was one good thing that came from it.”
“I fail to see what that could be.”
He laughed once more and slowly burrowed the sound in the soft strands of her hair. “You know, the easiest way to beat the Imperius curse is to know Occlumency.”
“So, you wouldn’t learn Imperio earlier, but you’ll use it on my best friend?”
Her heart dropped. “You can stop the Imperius curse.”
“To a degree.”
“But—,” he had let her cast it on him.
There was no fight.
No struggle.
She had forgotten all about that incident— banished it away to the far corners of her mind to be forgotten and shadowed by the scars of everything that happened afterward. Ominis had allowed her to overtake his mind and manipulate him knowing he could shake off her lousy attempt at the spell. Selena wanted to be furious, let forth a fountain of betrayal and outrage over his lack of disclosure for having the ability to stop her. She just couldn’t.  Ominis had warned her, and she still went ahead and cursed him anyways.
“I’ll take all the responsibility.”
So this is what he meant that night in the catacomb.
This was the responsibility she was supposed to take. Ominis had willingly sacrificed himself and placed his throat at the tip of her wand— a wand that was supposed to be held by a friend. He had believed in her. He had seen how Selena would do anything to help her friends achieve their goals and obtain solace with the comfort she brought because of her assistance. She had failed him, and still, Ominis played witness to the kindness she shared with others. He watched as Selena handed out those parts of her to everyone else but him.
“Why didn’t you stop it?”
“It doesn’t matter anymore.” He made to straighten up, but Selena didn’t want to release him from her hold. Not yet. Not when she could barely accept being added to the list of monsters who took his trust and molded it to match her own interests. Ominis quietly sighed and eased his hands from her own. “What’s done is done.”
“I know, just—”
“Oh for Merlin’s sake, let it go, Selena. I’m alright.”
She knew he was. Out of the three of them, Ominis had always been the strongest. Friend or foe, the young man would let it be known how foolish and wrong everyone was when others would keep such thoughts behind pressed lips. He was their bright burst of light shielding them from the heavy cloaks of a Dementor.  So, Selena knew he would be alright, but that didn’t make the guilt any easier.
“This isn’t what we came here for. Come now, face me so we may begin our lesson.”
“Fine,” She relented in a hushed sweep of air, dissipating the thick thread of tension between them. “I’m a sucker for this newfound assertiveness so I’ll comply this one time.”
Ominis rolled his eyes and settled deeper into the other end of the couch. “Thanks. Though I don’t believe I’ve been behaving any more different than before.”
“Fair. You’ve always been a little bossy—”
“—I beg your pardon!”
“But I don’t know, I just feel that you seem a little more sure of yourself. Since, you know…everything that happened with Sebastian and Anne.”
They’d fallen quiet again, fading back into the misery that Selena found herself tied to. Ominis was throwing her a line to grab hold of so she might be brought back to the surface, but here she was, trying to pull him under with her. Ominis deserved better than that— better than her.
“It's a good thing though! Like I’ve said before, I very much enjoy this side of you. Anyhow, carry on, Professor Gaunt.”
“Right. Well, I think we should start with how well-trained your mind is already.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I have your permission, yes?”
“Uh, sure?”
“Selena!”
“Alright! Yes, do with me what you will Ominis.”
Ominis shot her a look of humored annoyance and ignored her teasing by taking out his wand. The faint glow of red at its tip was drowned out by the bright hues of yellow and orange of the fire behind it. Swishing to and fro, Ominis bounced the wood on each pad of his fingers. Selena waited for the rotation of his wrist and the murmur of a spell, anything to show her friend had begun their lesson. But Ominis continued flickering his wand in small circular motions and kept her focus on the repetition of it. Brown eyes followed smooth lanky fingers as they spun the rich bark of English Oak round and round before her.
Selena never noticed when Ominis eventually said, “Legilimens.”
[Yesterday Morning - Headmaster’s Office]
“Good morning! Ms. Calderón, wasn’ it?”
“Um—yes, sir,” the student softly mumbled.
“I’m Auror Kaur and this is my partner, Auror Gawley. We’d like to ask you a few questions if you don’t mind?”
“Questions? Oh, uh, I guess that's alright?”
“Perfect!” The blonde, heavy-set man smiled widely at her with his browned, yellowed teeth. “You’re in your sixth year, yeah? Pretty late to be starting school. How’s it treating  you?”
“Fine,” the sixteen-year-old murmured reluctantly.
“That’s good to hear! After all the things we’ve heard you have been involved in, what with the dragon and troll and whatnot.”
“Um, thank you?” Selena stuttered. “I didn’t really— do much.”
Laughter bellowed loudly out of Kaur. “Nonsense! Escaping a dragon and taking down a troll are very impressive feats, Miss Calderón. Why, I don’t know of many witches or wizards who can boast that they’ve come face to face with at least one of them, let alone both.”
“Kaur.”
“Right, right. Just trying to make her feel comfortable.”
The makeshift space created for their meeting in the Headmaster’s office provided Selena with no comfort. Nor did Auror Kaur’s false pleasantries. She sat worriedly in the chair before them, unsure of their true purpose for being at Hogwarts and her need to be in their presence. Worries and fears crawled their way through every nerve in her body. They weren't here for Sebastian, were they? Did they happen to know anything about his sudden disappearance?
“I don’t mean to be rude but is Sebastian alright, sir? Headmaster Black mentioned—“
“All is well, dear. He’s safe and with his sister.”
“Anne? But Sir, I don’t understand. What happened? Why was he taken out of school?”
The second Auror, a man much older than his partner, reached forward to grasp the blonde and sighed down at the two of them irritably. “We’re here to investigate the death of Solomon Sallow.”
“Gawley!”
“Come off it, Kaur. There’s no beatin’ ‘round the bush ‘bout it.”
Selena straighten quickly in her worn and dated armchair. The Aurors bickered in harsh tones before her, but the raging war within Selena held her focus. Pointedly, she schooled the features beating themselves against the bars of neutrality. It screamed and raged, demanding the student’s attention be turned to it. The men knew nothing. They had to know nothing. It was the reason they were here, right?
All Selena needed to do was breathe. Breathe and act as if she knew nothing.
“Solomon’s dead?”
“Aye,” Gawley grunted. “Mr. Sallow has unfortunately passed.”
“But—wait! What about Sebastian and Anne!” Selena allowed a quiver to shake her lips as she gently dropped her head to her chest, perfectly woeful and beautifully innocent. “Merlin, I can’t—Oh gods.”
Auror Kaur muttered a “Poor thing” before the screech of his chair rang out as both he and his seat made their way to settle beside the Gryffindor girl. “You three were quite close from what the Headmaster shared. I— we can promise you your friends are safe, and if—”
“Oy! Don’ coddle her.”
“Goodness, gracious Gawley! Can’t you see how upset she is—here, dear, don’t mind him, you can use my handkerchief—a little more tact and sensitivity would be much appreciated!”
Selena sank deeper into the chair, folding herself further away from both men. Let them argue all they want as long as the show entertained the two of them, Selena would continue with her one-woman act and fish them for as much information as possible. From the corner of her eyes, she caught the swirling of the eldest man’s wand dancing within the shadow of his robes— waiting, watching, listening for its cue to come out and be known to all those who sat in the dim glow of the Headmaster’s office.
“Um, excuse me, sirs? Would you be able to tell me what happened?” Selena mumbled, eyes never leaving Gawley’s wand. “I just—are they alright? Can I see them?”
“So polite! Unfortunately, as this is an ongoing investigation, we can’t tell you any more than what we have.”
Ah, this was how they were going to lead the interrogation.
Auror Kaur continued to smile widely at Selena without notice of her deception. Gawley, on the other hand, didn’t seem inclined to be as welcoming as the other. There was no doubt in the Gryffindor’s mind that the older man didn’t fall victim to her charade. Towering and stocky as he was, the man seemed to love hiding behind the abundant ray of friendliness and concern that Kaur exerted abundance of.  The longer Selena let their conversation continue, the quicker her downfall would come. She would need to end this talk quickly and run with as much information as she could pull out of them.
“Was there anything you needed me from then, sirs?”
“No—”
“What was Sebastian Sallow’s relationship like with his uncle?”
“For Pete's sake, Gawley.”
“It's alright, Mr. Kaur!” Selena finally returned the clingy blonde’s smile. “I can’t really say much, but I know Sol— Mr. Sallow and Sebastian didn’t always see eye to eye.”
“And you don’ know why?”
The teen turned to face Auror Gawley with a frown. “Uh, well, it isn’t really my place to say.”
“I see.”
“Sir,” Selena pushed again. “Are you sure everything’s alright? Sebastian—”
“Is fine. Like we said.” Auror Kaur assured. “We’re just trying to get to the bottom of things. Solomon was an old friend of ours, and though he may have hung his badge, once an Auror, always an Auror.”
Fucking hell.
Friends? Solomon Sallow still had friends in the Ministry? Why hadn’t Sebastian or Anne said anything? Killing a man was easy, unfortunately. Trying to cover up the death of a still influential one was trouble. This investigation was spiraling down a path Selena couldn’t control or predict. How did she end up five steps behind? What did she miss? The distance between her and the Aurors grew wider and wider with each sentence. Something was amiss. Why were they so concerned with Sebastian?
“It's why we’re here,” Kaur continued. “Some of Solomon’s friends were concerned over his sudden passing and came to us. Poor things, to come to learn they lost an Uncle so soon after losing their parents. How—”
“That's enough, Kaur!”
“Stop being such a sour kneazle, Gawley.”
The older man rolled his eyes and motioned at the blonde with his wand. A dramatic puff of air raced out of Kaur’s lips, signaling his annoyed reluctance as he slunk away from his seat beside Selena and returned to the other man’s side. “Seems like we’re done here.”
“Wait!” Selena shot up, her chair loudly clacking to the floor behind her. “Sirs, please. I’m not sure what you think, but I can promise you, Sebastian had nothing to do with it. Despite their differences and arguments, Sebastian loved his uncle just as much as he loved his sister, Anne. Sirs, you have to help him— them. I know losing their uncle has hurt them, and while I’m grateful you’re helping look into this, I think you're suspecting the wrong person.”
“Suspecting? I think you got it all wrong. Young Sallow isn’t a suspect at all. We’re jus’ coverin’ our bases.” It was Gawley’s turn to share a crude, friendly smile with Selena. “However, why don’t you share why you think we’re suspectin’ ‘em? Maybe it’ll help find the real culprit, yeah?”
Shit.
“I— well,” she began unsteadily. “You asked me about his relationship with his uncle, but you never asked about Anne’s.”
“Ah. Jus’ standard protocol is all. You’d only spoke of ‘im. Figure you’d know more than wit’  youn’  Miss Sallow.”
Shit!
The man was playing Selena, and she had unknowingly been partaking in their game all along. How easy it must have been for them to realize she was hiding something. They’d use her emotions, manipulate each and every one of her moods, and blindly drag Selena down into the jaws of a sleeping dragon. Merlin, how pathetic.
She could battle poachers, ride graphorns, and wield powerful ancient magic but not see the trap right in front of her.
What a bloody joke she had become to be guided on a deceitful path of comfort words.
Heat rose within her, and though she should have known better than to continue with their conversation, their intended seeds of doubt had been planted. Selena had allowed that bud to grow inside of her, given time for the roots to settle and let it soak up any sense of calm she held before.
With a sigh, Selena raised her head to stare at the older men in front of her. “I’m worried about him— them,” she confessed. “Especially after what happened the last time we were there.”
“Hmm? And why’s that?”
“Well—”
“Take your time, dear. Only share if you don’t mind doing so!” Kaur chimed.
“It’s— sorry,” Selena murmured anxiously.
“You’re fine. Take as long as you need.”
“Right, thank you, sir.”
Her heart wouldn’t stay seated. So many thoughts fought for attention inside the cages of her mind, and Selena didn’t know how to wrangle them all back into a coherent list.
“There was nobody else. I came alone.”
Oh, Sebastian, what had he gotten them into now?
He had continually sacrificed himself for Selena, and now with the ball in her court, the gnawing phantom claws of hesitation held her back from doing the same. He was guilty, but was it worth losing her friend to Azkaban? Should she confess their sins and let them truly take Sebastian? Did the Aurors even really know what had gone on?
Selena needed to fix this.
Where was that dumb Gryffindor courage that her Slytherin friend loved to tease her so much about?
“If you want to get the most out of your time at Hogwarts you're going to need to break the rules now and then.”
And like a match had been struck, the floodgate of words began rushing out of her. “Yes,” she began in a rush— lies spilling out of her easily once freed from its confines. “Yes, the last time we were together, Sebastian, Anne, and I—there was an argument. Nothing physical, but Sebastian and Solomon fought over Anne. She’s—she’s really sick, and all we wanted to do was take her out. Which we did, but—we ran into Rookwood.”
“Rookwood. As in Victor Rookwood?” Kaur interrupted.
“Uh, yeah. He was insisting we knew where the location was to some lady’s house, but Sebastian and Anne never heard of her before. He wouldn’t leave us alone despite us telling him this. We tried to tell Solomon about him once we got away, but he didn’t believe us and was more upset that we’d taken Anne out. He sent us home soon after that.”
“I don’t think I quite follow, Miss Calderon. What does Victor Rookwood have to do with Solomon—”
“—What business would Mr. Rookwood have in Feldcroft?” Gawley growled.
“I…I don’t know, sir. I—it was just strange that he was questioning us about the whereabouts of something we knew nothing about.”
Kaur looked at Selena wearily. “This— isn’t really helpful.” With a sigh of his own, the blonde man slumped forward to rest himself on the desk before him and accidentally knocked into Gawley’s outstretched hand.  A small clunk rang out as Gawley’s reddish brown wand slipped from his grip. For a moment, all eyes found themselves drawn to the lost object. They watched as the wand rolled onto the floor listlessly— tethering between the shadow of the desk and the glow of the morning sun.
Selena, more so than the rest, was entranced by it.
She followed the back-and-forth swaying of the chestnut wood and stared at the thing as it struggled, almost as if it couldn’t make up its mind as to whether or not it wanted to be illuminated or shrouded in darkness. Such an odd thing for a wand to be doing. Why was the thin stick still moving? Shouldn’t it have lost all momentum by now?
How odd.
How odd.
Oh!
Her mind sounded so echo-y. What a strange thing to be happening. Were her thoughts usually like this?
Wait.
Wait.
Wait!
Something wasn’t right.
Something was slithering, coiling, lounging in the outskirts of her thoughts. This thing was burrowing its way behind the blockades and vaults she dare not open.
She needed to it stop moving.
She needed to get it out.

Search suspended for 14-month-old boy after mother found dead; illegal-immigrant boyfriend suspected
Officials in New York have called off a search for 14-month-old Owen Hidalgo-Calderon, who was feared dead after his mother's body was found May 24. Everardo Donoteo-Reyes, left, is a suspect in her death.
The search for a 14-month-old in a rural New York town has been suspended by police.
The child, Owen Hidalgo-Calderon, was feared dead after the body of his 18-year-old mother, Selena Hidalgo-Calderon, was found May 24 in a wooded area of a farm in Sodus where the two lived and worked.
The woman's boyfriend, Everardo Donoteo-Reyes, a 25-year-old Mexican who immigration officials have said is in the country illegally and has been deported twice, is a suspect in her death, but has not been charged.
Owen Hidalgo-Calderon has been missing since May 16.  (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children)
“At this time we have expended all of the current information and clues that we have, so we are going shut down the search,” Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts said, according to the Democrat and Chronicle, following a 12-day search for the child.
A state forest ranger in the area told the news outlet that based on investigators' search tactics, Owen's body is most likely not on the property.
“It doesn't mean that he's not … but we are at over 90 percent probability of detection,” Lt. Charles Richardson said. “Right now there's really no need for us to continue searching here until we get other information.”
TWICE-DEPORTED ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT HELD IN NEW YORK TODDLER'S DISAPPEARANCE, MOM'S DEATH
He said that while the search for Owen - who was last seen May 16 - has stopped, the investigation will continue.
Donoteo-Reyes, who has admitted to burying the woman but not killing her, is a suspect in the homicide investigation, Virts said last week.
He hasn't been charged in that investigation but has been charged with tampering with evidence after allegedly re-entering the U.S. and possessing counterfeit documents, according to the newspaper.
Donoteo-Reyes is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
