Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited 2.0L
Text and Photos by Michael Hozjan
Is this the Wrangler I’ve been waiting for
Regular readers know that the Wrangler is a vehicle I hate to love. But love it I do, and now comes one that I find it even harder to resist. Last fall I got behind the wheel of the all-new Rubicon and I strongly urge you to scroll down and catch up on all the changes to the 2019 Wrangler, they are astounding. This past week I had the Sahara, a street friendlier version of the popular Jeep.
Tumblr media
What has got me all excited? Two things, a return to four cylinder power and, the Sahara now comes with an electric sunroof that folds past the second row seat to allow nature’s best in. With other models you get either a fold-away canvas top, or a composite fiberglass top. The Sky Power Soft Top as Jeep calls it is a $3,995 option and if you’re lazy like me or always in a hurry like me, and don’t have the patience to unzip, flip, fold, unbolt, crease, well you get the picture, the new top is a blessing.  You can still take off the doors and the rear quarter windows for that safari experience and keep the roof on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other niceties I appreciated about the Sahara is a leather covered dash as opposed to the Rubicon’s rather loud, unmatched colored unit. Am I nit picking? Well if I’m paying sixty grand for a Sahara I better like what I see. OK maybe the leather dash won’t stand up to repeated downpours but then I don’t think too many Sahara owners will need to worry about that…again thanks to the electric roof. The 7” infotainment screen was smaller than the Rubicon’s but I didn’t mind the difference for the $1,395 saving over the 8.4” option. I’ve mentioned this time and time again, FCA’s infotainment interface—called Uconnect—is one of the industry’s easiest to use, quick to respond, and can be displayed on different sized touchscreens whether we’re talking Jeep, Ram or Challenger.  Yes, yes, yes, Apple Car Play and Android Auto are available, as is navigation and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If there is a sore point to the Jeep experience is that the rear seats don’t fold flush with the floor. I was forced to camp out in the back during a major downpour and while grateful I was dry, cursed the designers more than once during the night.
Tumblr media
The second good news is that power for my Sahara was supplied by the all-new 2.0L inline turbocharged four cylinder with eTorque. The four is a $2,590 option but may be a worthy option. Though it makes a lot of rockus when you first fire it up, so much so I thought it had a diesel, it quietens down considerably to a mild hum within a few minutes. The Italian sourced four makes 270 horses and beats out the V6 in torque with an impressive 295 lb-ft., and that, has always been a sore point of the V6. The hybrid four will also send you to 100 kph quicker than the six and still maintains the V6’s towing capacity of 3500 lbs.
While not a true hybrid, the eTorque does as its name suggests, provides additional torque when needed. The 48-volt motor/generator captures braking energy for storage and later uses the energy to boost the engine’s torque at low speeds. In addition it keeps the 12-volt battery charged, negating the need for a regular alternator, and restarts the motor when the automatic stop/start system is used.
Sadly the four cylinder package is only available with the 8-speed automatic. As I mentioned earlier the Sahara is street friendlier Wrangler, which is not to say that it isn’t an off-roader. It will get you in and out of more sand, dirt, gravel or snow than most SUVs on the market it just doesn’t have some of the heavy-duty off-road gear of the Rubicon. Case in point the Selec-Trac 4WD system. Selec-Trac offers you the choice of fuel saving rear wheel drive while still giving you the option of low 4x4. Adding to the Sahara’s road mannerisms are the 255/70 R18 Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires. They’re quiet and provide formidable traction.
There’s also adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning something unheard of in a Jeep a few years ago.
Tumblr media
Where the Sahara hurts is the sticker shock. Entry price is in the mid forties and quickly escalates. Choose your options carefully and it will make a big difference at the end – (news flash). I’ve already mentioned the smaller infotainment screen that will save you nearly $1400. The optional alloy wheels are an additional $695, leather seats $995. Yes I love the big-ticket items but think that FCA could choose to option us a bare bones version without items like power windows and a/c to keep costs down.  Still, talk to anyone who owns one and they’ll quickly point out how well the Wranglers hold their value. More fodder for my love hate relationship.
 Price as tested: $59,460

Jeep Introduces Wrangler for MY21
2021 is a special year for Jeep as the brand marks its 80th birthday with a celebration of eight decades of 4x4 leadership, open-air freedom and adventure. While looking back at past endeavors, Jeep is updating the Wrangler for model year 21 (MY21) with the introduction of enhanced safety features, increased off-road capabilities and a range of new colors, as well as introducing the new 80th anniversary edition.
Jeep Wrangler MY21 For MY21, all Jeep Wrangler models will be fitted with the 2.0-liter 272hp Euro6D final petrol engine, combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission.  This new engine results in CO2 emission ranging between 243-251g/km, a reduction of 10g/km over the previous generation,  when fitted to the Sahara, Overland and the new 80th Anniversary models, while the off-road focused Rubicon emits between 261-271g/km CO2.
To assist on-road driving, enhanced additional safety features are now included as standard across the UK Wrangler range.  These include the addition of adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop and go, accident emergency braking (AEB) and auto high beam.
Off-road driving has also been enhanced with a series of new features added to the Wrangler range as standard, making it even easier to go anywhere and do anything.  Selec-Speed control, an off-road cruise control,  allows the driver to maintain a steady speed during rock crawling and other types of low speed maneuvering. A selectable tire fill alert can now be set through the 8.4-inch touchscreen. Ideal for off-road adventurers who deflate the tire pressures to get grip on off road courses when traversing mud and rocks, the system will give an audible warning when the desired tire pressures have been reached.
Exclusively available on the Rubicon, the new Off-Road+ (OR+) mode provides unique powertrain and chassis tuning.  Specifically tailored for high range ‘sand’ performance and low range ‘rock’ activity, OR+ adjusts the ABS, ESC, accelerator pedal, traction control and transmission calibrations . Sand mode is enabled when OR+ is activated while in 4H gear and  rock mode is enabled when OR+ is activated while in 4Low.
A new range of body colors, Hydro Blue, Snazzberry and Sarge Green, are now available on the Wrangler range, paying homage to the models history. Nacho will also be available as a limited run, exclusively on the Rubicon.
Jeep Wrangler 80th Anniversary The iconic Jeep Wrangler is also available as an 80th Anniversary special-edition model, featuring Neutral Grey Metallic grille, headlight and fog light bezels and specific 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels with Granite Crystal accents. Full LED high-visibility headlights with auto high beam control, body-cooler hardtop and the 80th Anniversary badge on the front wheel arches help to mark out this commemorative special-edition model, along with a commemorative plaque on the rear swing gate.
The interior features black leather seats with tungsten stitching and the 80th Anniversary badge, along with a leather wrapped dashboard featuring contrast stitching and Berber floor mats. Standard technology content includes the Uconnect 8.4 NAV system with 8.4-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7-inch TFT display and a 9-speaker Alpine audio system with a 552W subwoofer.
Standard safety features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear camera, front and rear parking sensors, Keyless Enter 'N Go, forward collision warning, advanced brake assist and adaptive cruise control with stop.
Like all variants in the Wrangler line-up, the 80th anniversary edition is Trail Rated – the brand’s guarantee of a model’s superior go-anywhere capability.  Featuring the Jeep Command-Trac four-wheel-drive system it uses the Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case to continuously monitor and manage the torque sent to the front and rear wheels to ensure the Wrangler can master even the most challenging off-road tracks.
A year of exclusive events and services for all members of the Jeep family This year will see the Jeep community come together with a series of dedicated initiatives and events,  bringing customers and enthusiasts even closer to the Jeep tradition.  The first such initiative is Jeep Wave, a new program offering Jeep owners exclusive services and special benefits to enhance their sense of belonging to the community at the heart of the Jeep experience around the world.
Included as standard on all new Jeep vehicles purchased or leased in 2021 by retail customers, the main benefits of Jeep Wave include the first three scheduled vehicle services , three years roadside assistance, access to a dedicated premium customer service call center and priority entry to brand events and partnerships.
Jeep Wave is marked out by a logo inspired by the traditional greeting of Jeep owners  – a raised hand waving, or two or four fingers extended upward from the steering wheel. This gesture of friendship is part of Jeep history, and ‘Jeepers’ are proud to uphold this tradition.
The MY21 Jeep Wrangler range and 80th anniversary special-series are now available to order, with prices starting from £49,450 OTR for the Wrangler Sahara 2-dr .

4wd To The Rescue
As the owner of a four-wheel drive truck since I was 16, I have seen the great benefits of a four-wheel drive system. I have lived in places such as Idaho where the extra traction saved me from being stuck plenty of times. I also spent a considerable amount of time off-road and have been saved in sand, mud, and water thanks to my four-wheel drive.
In today’s world, car sales are going down every year. More and more people are buying trucks and SUVs. There is even now an national 4WD association https://www.4wdnow.com/! How sweet is that? Many car companies are taking their focus away from sedans, coupes, and compacts and focusing on crossovers, SUVs, and trucks of all sizes. Many of these SUVs and trucks offer a four-wheel drive option or all-wheel drive option. Many people buy these cars with these capabilities and even use them regularly without really understanding how they operate.
The idea of four-wheel drive has been around for a very long time already. The idea hasn’t changed much but modern technology has made it even more convenient than ever. These new four-wheel drive systems are incredibly capable and extremely easy to use. Let’s dive a little further into how these systems work.
Transfer Case
Have you ever wondered what the difference was between four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive? The main difference is that all-wheel drive operates using a center differential and the four-wheel drive uses a transfer case. They both operate using many similar components, but they work very differently. Both of these components are responsible for the sending of power to both the front and rear differentials.
Originally when you wanted to shift your vehicle into four-wheel drive, you had a floor-mounted shift lever that you moved in order to engage four-wheel drive. It was also common for you to have to exit your vehicle and manually lock your hubs. Nowadays, almost all manufacturers use a dash-mounted button to switch to four-wheel drive. When the four-wheel drive button is pressed, it will send a signal to a four-wheel drive control module that will activate an electric motor. This motor moves a shift fork which will engage and disengage the four-wheel drive.
Four-Wheel Drive Technology
One great feature in most four-wheel drive vehicles is called “Auto 4wd”. This essentially allows for the vehicle to operate as four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The clutch in your transfer case is what makes this possible. When driving in four-wheel drive mode, more power will be applied to the clutch than in four-wheel drive auto mode. Four-wheel drive auto mode will allow for you to turn sharply without experiencing drive-line bind-up. While you are driving in auto four-wheel drive your vehicle will quickly respond to changing road conditions. This is all possible through wheel speed sensors in each wheel. This system also improves fuel economy as four-wheel drive is only engaged when it is needed.
Below is an excellent video which explains how Jeep’s Selec-Trac 2 system works. You will see a demonstration of how 2wd, 4wd auto, and 4wd low work.
youtube
Four-Wheel Drive Ranges
Most modern four-wheel drive vehicles are capable of operating in multiple ranges. The standard range is 2wd drive Hi. This is how you drive your vehicle around normally. Your vehicle will drive as a normal rear-wheel drive. This is helpful to get ideal gas mileage and to prevent excessive driveline strain.
There is also a 4wd Hi range. This will supply power to both the front and rear differentials. In this high range, power will come from the transmission and go straight to the rear output shaft at a 1:1 ratio. The chain in the transfer case will send the same power to the front output shafts since both the top and lower drive sprockets are the same.
You will generally have a 4wd Low option as well. This supplies power to both the front and rear differentials much like the 4wd Hi range does. The main difference is that this uses very low gear ratios in order to send maximum torque and limited speed.
Some vehicles even offer a 2wd drive mode but not many do. This uses the same low gearing as 4wd low but only sends this power to the rear wheels. Many people like this for towing heavy loads. As this mode is very rarely used, it is uncommon to see it in vehicles.
Transfer Case Diagnosis
Now that you’ve learned a little about four-wheel drive systems let’s learn a little about repairing four-wheel drive systems. Your transfer case is the heart of your four-wheel drive. If 4wd isn’t engaging, your transfer case very well could be the culprit. To check to see if your transfer case is engaging or not, lift the vehicle in the air so that all of the tires are off the ground. Then engage four-wheel drive and press the gas. If only one of the drive-shafts rotates then the problem is with the transfer case.
There are really only two things that could be wrong with the transfer case. Either it has a broken electric motor that engages the transfer case or there is a broken/worn component inside of the transfer case.
Listen to your transfer case while someone tries to engage it. If it sounds like it’s trying to engage but isn’t or if you don’t hear anything at all, the problem is likely your electric motor. It very likely could be having electrical issues or have failed. If the system sounds like it is engaging normally but isn’t then it is likely something inside has failed. This could be a worn fork, stripped gears, or worn clutch disks.
Power to All Wheels
Four-wheel drive really is an amazing thing. It allows for amazing things to happen. Four-wheel drive technology continues to improve each and every year. As time goes on four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems are starting to blend into one as well. The more you know about your four-wheel drive system, the better you will be able to diagnose and repair it.
If you live in and around the bay area in California, by far the best truck repair mechanics in my experience are the guys at A-1 Auto Tech, Inc.

Jeep Wrangler Sport S and Mustang 2.3L Convertible: Two Fours for Summer Fun
Words and Photos By Michael Hozjan
No I’m not talking about cases of beer. I’m referring to the number of cylinders found under the hood of two American icons in the automotive landscape – the Jeep Wrangler and Mustang. Don’t scoff, four cylinders have been making a huge come back in recent years and no, these are not your grand dad’s four cylinders. Both the Jeep and the Mustang rely on turbocharging to get the extra oomph when needed all while delivering below average thirst numbers compared to their V6 and V8 counterparts. Let’s face it do we really need all that horsepower all the time and isn’t it nice to save some bucks at the pump.
Jeep Wrangler Sport: Back to its roots
“There’s something amiss here.” I tell myself as the engine comes to life. I hit the off button and check for the glow plug light, there isn’t one. For some reason the engine doesn’t sound the same, and yet there’s something eerily familiar about the sound.  I mistakenly expected the Wrangler to be diesel powered, which it was not. The diesel mill is offered in the Gladiator that I was due to drive, but at a later date. Blame it on old age or just on my eagerness to get behind the wheel of one of my favorite rides.
Tumblr media
Well one thing lead to another and another and before I knew it, it was several days later that I popped the hood to gaze upon the turbocharged inline 2.0L four cylinder. THAT’S what the sound was… somehow, the engineers at Jeep have managed to get the sound of the old familiar World War II era four cylinder Jeep into this modern, 80th anniversary edition Wrangler…or maybe it’s just me. One thing is certain, it doesn’t sound like the Wrangler I’ve been accustomed to.
Tumblr media
Maybe it’s just coincidence, maybe it’s good corporate planning, with Jeep’s closest off-road capable rival, the Ford Bronco making its debut this year, Jeep has stepped up the ante, not only have they launched the Wrangler Xtreme Recon equipped with the first ever 35-inch rubber straight out of the factory, but are also offering a slew of powerplants to make any competitor nervous: beginning with this week’s tester, there’s the 2.0 L turbocharged four cylinder mated to the 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic, the trusty old 285 horsepower Pentastar 3.6L V6s remain and come with either a manual or automatic trans, there’s also a mild hybrid version mated to the 3.6L tagged the eTorque, a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 with 442 lb-ft of torque and 260 horses and for the first time in four decades, the Wrangler gets a V8. Available exclusively (dare I say for the time being) in the Rubicon 392 trim, the 6.4L throws out 470 horses and the like amount of torque through the eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and Selec-Trac full-time active transfer case.  It blasts the Rubicon 392 to 100 km/h in less than five seconds making it the quickest Wrangler in history!
Tumblr media
Well it appears the Jeep has come full circle with their mills, reverting back to four cylinder power to move their off roaders about. But don’t think for a minute that these are the old WWII flatheads. No sir, and not one but two count them, two four cylinders are offered. Aside from my Snazzyberry Pearl colored 2.0L turbocharged tester which pumps out 270 horses and 295 lb-ft of torque, capable of towing 2,000 lbs (907 kilos), that’s 35 more lb-ft of torque than its V6 counterpart, there’s also an electrified four cylinder that adds an electric motor. The plug in hybrid 4xe delivers 375 horses!  Stay tuned for more on this one.

Above and below: There’s nothing missing in the four that you wouldn’t find in the six.
If you’re a regular reader of my posts you’ll know that I do NOT check performance numbers or price tags before I get a feel for what the vehicle feels like. Does it feel like 300 horses, does it feel like 400 lb-ft of torque? I tend to reserve looking at the stats until after my first, second and third impression. That said, despite having 270 horses, it still seemed a bit anemic from my previous Wrangler encounters (with the V6). There’s a noticeable difference at half throttle when leaving a red light or stop sign, but that quickly disappears as you build up speed. Punch the go pedal however to wake up the turbo boost and grab on to the steering wheel. The torque kicks in and bites the tarmac like a banshee. Suddenly Jeeps decision to go with this combo makes perfect sense.
Tumblr media
On the highway the four delivers smooth, linear power and actually feels better mated to the 8-speed automatic than the six. Passing semis or climbing grades isn’t a problem and while I didn’t get the chance to go off-roading I suspect that the added torque would be able to let this Wrangler do some serious climbing prowess without hesitation.
Tumblr media
Of course one of the other main attributes is that the Wrangler can shed its top when the weather turns warm. With two tops available it still remains the only convertible SUV in the market.

One of the Wrangler’s Achilles’ heals has always been it’s thirst for fuel. My best has usually been around 12L/100 kms even when feathering my foot. Well the 2.0L netted me a 9.75L/100 average, on top of which a $200 saving over the automatic trannied V6 makes getting into a Wrangler a lot easier. The Sport S starts at $45,465, my fully loaded tester came in at a substantial premium, which leads me to want to see this mill in the 2-door Wrangler variant with a manual transmission. Now that would truly be full circle. If you’ve always wanted a Wrangler but weren’t crazy about their fuel consumption Jeep has just given you several reasons why you should reconsider.

Mustang 2.3L Convertible: Is this the best Mustang ever?
It’s a balmy July afternoon, the kind we wait all year long for and fantasize about from December through to March. I’m in the left lane of the 401 heading west, passing semi after semi. The sun is beaming down on me and I get to thinking how nice this thing would be for a cross-country run. Indeed it doesn’t get much better than this. There are so many semis it reminds me of the rocking chair scene in The Bandit, only I’m not driving a T-top black Firebird with a roaring V8 and Sheriff Buford T Justice chasing me, but a drop top Antimatter Blue (yes that’s the hue) Mustang with a turbocharged 2.3L four cylinder.
Tumblr media
For decades Ford has been grappling with the notion of having both a high performance Mustang and an economy Mustang, and yes when it first debuted there were trims that encompassed both. But over the years that concept got lost with muscle cars taking the limelight. It wasn’t until the gas crisis of ’73 that the economy car resurrected itself in the Mustang II, but in the process lost the muscle slice of the pie.
Well guess what, the 2.3L fits both bills easily. Yes diehard muscle heads may pooh pooh the thought of another four cylinder in a Mustang but they have no idea what they’re missing out on.
Tumblr media
Pillaged from the darling all-wheel-drive Ford, the Focus RS, the 2.3L mill has been turned longitudinally to fit into the pony car. Although Ford has given the Mustang a larger twin scroll turbo, there are 18 fewer horses pulling the pony car over the RS. Torque however has been retained.
With 310 horses and 350 lb-ft of torque on tap mated to an optional 10-speed automatic my tester galloped along without so much as missing a breadth. Thankfully Ford has retained the 6-speed manual. My unofficial timing showed zero to a hundred kilometers shot in at 4.6 seconds!  I have to say that as sweet as the four cylinder is, the exhaust note just tries to hard and gets annoying after a while.  It’s like look at me, look at me. Oh shut up! Thankfully there is a shut off switch.
Tumblr media
My ‘stang came with the High Performance Package, a $6,500 option inherited from the Mustang GT, which meant stickier 19” Pirelli rubber over the base car’s 17” units, larger brake rotors with four piston calipers, stiffer springs, a beefier rear sway bar, strut tower brace, a larger rad, a 3.55:1 limited slip diff. In other words, all the right stuff to make this a serious tourer.
Tumblr media
Above and below: Top up or top down the Mustang looks great. Front spoiler is part of the High  Performance Package.
Tumblr media
Another plus for the four-cylinder argument is better balanced shedding 147kilos (auto trans) off its front axle. The result is a crisper handling ride with a nominal amount of body roll, less nosedive under hard braking. Switching driving modes from Normal to Sport mode for attacking the lakeside twisties shows the car’s true potential with the engine’s responsiveness hitting the sweet spot over 2,500 rpm and the fun factor sans V8.
This would make an interesting track car.
Tumblr media
Inside you get all the usual fan fare of goodies including cooling and heated power leather seats.  The hi-po package adds an oil pressure and turbo boost gauge and engine spun aluminum instrument panel. Fit and finish is spot on with comfortable buckets making the drive that much more enjoyable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Despite what it looks like my 6’ frame spent several hours back there in a friend’s convert for a three-hour trip to the Syracuse Nationals a few years back without a single complaint.
Like the Jeep the Mustang doesn’t come cheap. While the base price is a very reasonable $43,370, my tester’s option list added another $11,800 to the price tag. Stepping up to the $6,500 high performance package is a no brainer, especially if you’re a serious driver, but while the 10-speed is perfectly matched to the engine and responds wonderfully to throttle inputs I’d go with the 6-speed manual and trim $1,750 off the tag. Other options included $1,000 AM/FM/CD/HD radio, $2,300 for adaptive cruise, voice activated touch screen navigation and the Ford Safe & Smart package.
Tumblr media
In a move I just don’t understand is the spare tire/wheel has been relegated to option status! In its place is a compressor - just the ticket for a bent rim, blow out or flat in the middle of nowhere on a dark rainy night. Come on Ford!
Tumblr media
Yes the Mustang buyer has a number of trims and powerplants to opt for all the way to the 100 grand Shelby GT500 but really, wouldn’t you rather have a car that hits all the right fun buttons without breaking the bank while still passing a gas station or two ( I averaged 10.7L/100 km). Oh and let’s not forget the savings on the insurance premium on the four cylinder So shrug the V8 monkey off your back and hit the road in a four.
