THE TOO GOOD TEN with DYLAN ROCKOFF
Self-proclaimed “pop-hop-singer-songwriter” Dylan Rockoff recently celebrated the release of his EP Crooked Records whose titled was inspired by the wall of records that hangs in his room. The 6-song project is the follow up to 2020′s Semicolon & Parentheses album - the latter which saw him end up as #2 on the iTunes pop charts between Selena Gomez & Harry Styles and racked up millions of streams. After the pandemic hit, Rockoff ended up having to cancel an opening slot on the 2020 Travie McCoy tour in support of the 10 Year Anniversary of “Billionaire (f. Bruno Mars).” This shift in plans gave the talented artist time to work on his new EP. Now with this most recent release Rockoff has struck “Magic” with the latest single off the EP that gained support on Sirius XM’s The Pulse and featured on iHeart Radio. Lucky for Too Good Music, Rockoff took some time to take on the latest Too Good Ten to talk all about the new EP, single, what surpassing 20+ million streams feels like and so much more. Check it out below:
The Too Good Ten. Ten Questions. One Artist. Too Good. Let’s go.
Tumblr media
1. You’ve already had a pretty impressive career so far - but looking back at the beginning, what was it about music that made you want to pursue a career in it?
DYLAN ROCKOFF: First off, thank you! I appreciate that. I think I’ve been so drawn to music because of its ability to bring people together. Especially people who might not have come together otherwise. I love how universal music is.
2. Now you’ve got over 20 million+ global streams - what does that number mean to you? Does it feel real?
DR: All I’ve ever wanted to do is make music that resonates with people. That number means a lot to me… It's a big number to wrap your head around - a bit surreal! But I’m so grateful for every one of the listeners out there – they make it possible.
3. Congrats on the recent release of the Crooked Records EP. It features a number of collaborations including with Max Wells, Bre Kennedy & Sela Bruce. How do your collaborations normally come together? Who would be a dream collaboration for you?
DR: Thank you! Most of the collaborations came about naturally the day of the session…. Bre and I wrote “Problems” together, and she sang the verse with the intention of it being a duet. It was a similar process with Sela. Max got a hold of "Highlight Reel" and absolutely crushed the verses. It’s usually pretty organic the way it all comes together. My dream collaborators: Harry Styles, Anderson .Paak, Phoebe Bridgers, Maggie Rogers.

4. The Crooked Records EP also features the single, “Magic” which also just recently played on Sirius XM The Pulse and various other radio stations. What does the song mean to you? Do you believe in magic? Have you ever done magic tricks?
DR: Of course, I’m so grateful for all the support thus far. “Magic,” to me, is a celebration of the way that loved ones make us feel. It’s about the universal forces beyond our comprehension and control. I have never done magic tricks, but I may have to learn some!
5. If you had magical powers/superpowers for a day - what power (flying, time travel, etc) would you want and what would be the first thing you’d do with that power?
DR: What a great question… Growing up, before I got into music, I was big into sports. My game was always based around speed, so if I could have hyper-speed like Dash in The Incredibles, I think I might have a shot in the NFL. I’d try out for the Philadelphia Eagles!
6. Before COVID hit, you were scheduled to open for Travie McCoy’s nationwide tour. What were you most looking forward to on that tour? Have you met Travie before? If so, any advice or tips you got from him?
DR: I’m a big fan of Travie, so I was mostly looking forward to watching him play, and getting to know him. We were also scheduled to play some places I’d never been before (that’s always the best part of tour for me). I've yet to meet Travie! But I’m sure our paths will cross again someday.

7. You may not have gotten to open for Travie’s tour, but you DID win a Livenation contest that saw you open for Bon Jovi at Madison Square Garden. What was that experience like? Did you learn anything from watching him perform that night?
DR: What an incredible experience that was… I think the coolest part of it all was hearing my band fill up Madison Square Garden - an iconic arena - with my music. That was easily the most people I’d ever performed for at once, so it was equal parts intimidating and exciting. Bon Jovi is such a dynamic performer, and there's so much tact that goes into creating a show at that scale. I definitely walked away with a greater appreciation for what it takes to put on high-energy arena shows multiple nights in a row!
8. What’s the most interesting/funniest/craziest fan interaction that’s happened to you?
DR: Nothing super crazy! I remember the last time I played in Philadelphia (2019), I got to meet a fan who’d been following me since my first release in 2015. We had communicated on Instagram a lot up, but it was so crazy to finally put a face to a name. Those kind of full-circle moments are what it’s all about for me!
9. If you could only listen to (5) artists for the rest of your life, who would they be?
Led Zeppelin
Kendrick Lamar
Pink Floyd
John Mayer
Carole King
10. What’s the rest of 2021 look like for Dylan Rockoff?
DR: Keeping “Magic” bumping on the airwaves, getting some shows announced (stay tuned), and working on the next album!
