Chapter 250: Well, Shit
Notes:
Characters: Ruby Rating: Teen Warnings: Language Notes: Anyone interested in a short chapter >:3c
Ruby woke up with a pep to her step. She hummed as she lightly walked the room. She was practically gliding on air as she dressed. She was so goddamn happy! She was going to see Law again! They could kiss and hug and leave this island together! She could go home!
She made sure everything about her was done right. She couldn’t be too perfect. If she was too perfect she’d be damn near irresistible to Law and he’d have no choice but to be flustered in front of the Straw Hats, and she liked him too much to embarrass him too much.
She hummed as she ate yogurt and read the newspaper. She blinked at the article.
Alliance formed.
Doflamingo’s abdication.
Everything seemed to be going the way it should, but something was off. Something didn’t feel too…correct. She had a sinking feeling in her stomach but she hoped it was just the apprehension from seeing Law for the first time in months.
She finished her yogurt and threw it in the trash. She slipped on a pair of heels and started to gather her belongings to meet Law at the meeting spot.
There was a knock on the door.
Her brows twitched and furrowed. Who would be bothering her now? Everyone she knew was either still asleep or already at their jobs. She approached the door. Her body shook with anxiety, her brain sending signals to her to not open the door, to run away. She swallowed, cursing her anxiety and opened the door.
Her eyes widened and a cold sweat rolled down her face. Her body shook and she let out a breath that was close to what could have been her stifling down a cry for help.
Doflamingo stood outside her apartment door, grinning at her. No wonder her brain told her to leave.
“Sela D. Ruby, I believe-”
She closed the door on Doflamingo casually. There was a moment of silence before her door burst into pieces. Ruby ran to the window and jumped out of it, not caring about the shattered glass. She landed on the ground and ran down the street, ignoring the screams and shouts and shocked gasps, instead focusing on the amused laughter that followed her. She felt his strings pass through her body and she quickly turned a corner...only to fall flat on her face. The bastard tripped her with haki coated string.
“A logia! Now it makes sense why Law would have you as a spy.” Ruby glared up at the obnoxiously tall man. “I’ve let you live on this island for a month now-” Ruby swallowed –she’s been here for almost two, so she managed to get by on her own long enough. “But now it’s good to see that Law is on his way, too.” Ruby’s glare hardened and she stood up, brushing off her clothes. “Tell me, what’s Law’s plan?” Ruby didn’t answer. “If you tell me, I might just let both of you live.”
“Bullshit,” she snapped. “Law told me what happened; I’m no idiot. However, if you think I’ll believe you’ll let either of us live, you certainly are.”
He snickered. “You’re unbelievably incomprehensible.” He talked down to her. “I still saved the Heart Seat for him! You wouldn’t even have to leave him and could be part of his army.” What a universe that would be. “We could always use a powerful logia on board.” Patronizing ass.
Ruby lifted her middle finger up and stuck her tongue out. “I’d rather die than call you my captain, Doflamingo.” She reacted immediately, turning her arm into wood and covering it in armament haki . His strings hit her arm, sending sparks flying.
“You’re fast.”
“I am Law’s spy; he wouldn’t just send me to look pretty,” she pushed away his strings before throwing her Sceana Duille at him. A small cut appeared on his cheek and he looked mildly annoyed. She ran off and he followed after her, manic laughter filling the alley. There was no way she could meet Law and the Straw Hat’s at the meeting point now. She could only buy him time and pray that he could get to her before…
Before Doflamingo killed her.

HADIAH BERTUBI-TUBI : R for RINI to Musi Rawas . . Sepanjang briefing saya hampir selalu tersenyum. Briefing RUBI ini semacam kondangan teman kuliah, setiap jalan sedikit pasti ketemu orang yang dikenal. Berbagi salam, berbagi kabar. Chapter 251: When She's Always Late...
Notes:
Characters: Law Rating: Teen Warning: Language Notes: >:3c
Law was…tired? Tired. Yes. Just simply tired.
Not injured. Not at all. His heart was absolutely, totally fine. There wasn’t a damn thing wrong with it.
That’s exactly what he’d tell Ruby. That he was tired and that it’s been a trial and a half to be around the Straw Hats.
It wasn’t a lie. Not a true lie, at least. Not really. He was tired! He was very, very exhausted from being way from his crew, being away from Ruby, being around Ceasar Fucking Clown, being around Straw Hat-ya, and of course from being in an…unavoidable fight. Yes, truly unavoidable.
And the pain in his heart was absolutely something he could ignore! There wouldn’t be any lasting consequences of having a little, tiny tear in it that he had to quickly fix or he would maybe die. Besides, he had three whole days to rest before he arrived on Dressrosa! That’s plenty of time!
Alright, this false positivity and roundabout way of denying that he was absolutely fucked was getting annoying.
Ruby was going to kill him if his heart didn’t first. She was going to grab his ear and lecture into it. She would seeth and fuss and be annoyed and she would definitely cry. And Law…
Law would be so damn happy to see her again that he probably wouldn’t even be slightly annoyed at her. He would welcome her rough touch and her stern voice. He would have to be careful, however. He couldn’t let any of the Straw Hats know that they were a couple. He knew he’d have to tell Ruby to tone it down and to not kiss him in front of them. They could hug, though. Hugging was fine. People hug all of the time. Nothing special, not at all.
His heart squeezed when Dressrosa appeared on the horizon, which hurt like a bitch. God, Ruby was going to absolutely annihilate him when he told her how Punk Hazard went down. And even though Ruby would, in fact, beat him within an inch of his life, and despite all the…mishaps and the unexpected alliance, his plan was going well. Doflamingo resigned, SAD was done with, and he was about to see Ruby again after months of being apart before shipping her off to Zou where she could be home again.
He allowed himself to drift off into thoughts of her. She’d be in a cute dress and her hair in a braid. She’d be doing her best to stop herself from bouncing in excitement as she waited for him and the Straw Hats to disembark. He was already preparing to be jumped on in excitement. He was training his face to not look completely ecstatic over being reunited with his girlfriend.
But with every moment that they sailed closer and closer to the shore, his anxiety grew, and when they docked, he understood why.
Ruby wasn’t there.
Law stared at the shore from the Thousand Sunny and ignored the feeling in the pit of his stomach. A thousand very quick thoughts raced through his head. Why wasn’t she here? What in the hell was she doing? What happened to her?
He took a deep breath and steadied himself. Ruby has punctuality issues. She was probably just running late because she decided to make herself unnecessarily pretty. There was no need for such effort. Not when one of the most annoying pirates was in the vicinity and he would be slobbering over Ruby. Law was already dreading that fucking interaction.
“Isn’t your crew member supposed to meet us here?” Black Leg-ya said from behind his cigarette.
“Ruby has punctuality issues,” Law had said like it didn’t bother him as much as it did.
“Ruby?” Nico-ya spoke up. “Sela D. Ruby?”
“Yeah.”
“I heard she was in an accident that made it impossible to fight.” Law frowned and ignored Black Leg-ya who realized that it was a woman they were waiting for.
“It didn’t make it impossible for her to fight,” Law explained. “She won’t be fighting anyway. Her goal was to feed me information on everything she could. Which is why there’s the factory team, she couldn’t get me information on the factory. She’ll be here, let me explain the rest of the plan…”
And then Ruby proceeded to not be there. She had decided on that very important day to not show up, to not follow the plan, and to worry the absolute shit out of him. He was beginning to lose tolerance for the lecture she would give him about his injuries and started to realize he would be giving her a lecture on not being hindrance.
“Are we sure we didn’t go to the wrong place?” Nami-ya asked after an hour of waiting.
“No,” he grunted. “This is where she said to go.” Law fingered the den den mushi as he waited on the shore of Dressrosa. Where was she? He knew she had punctuality problems but this was fucking ridiculous. He stowed his anxiety and sighed. “We can start without her, with luck she’s just looking out for a bit longer and we’ll meet up later. She knows where to meet me if this meetup hadn’t happened.”
He ignored his cramping stomach. He had to. He had to get through today without any problems. Ruby would absolutely understand if he started without her and would also not complain after being this late to such an important event.
Law had no doubt that she was just being unreliable about time again. What else could it be? She was so good at what she did that he knew that she hadn’t gotten into trouble, she was good about not being found when she put her mind to it. She wouldn’t have survived as long as she had without being good at what she did.
No, she was probably taking her time getting ready, eating, packing her items. She probably got distracted by some window shopping. She may even be marveling at the way Dressrosa was falling apart without Doflamingo.
Law pushed back his anxiety and worry, and decided to focus on his plan before anything else. Ruby would be on Greenbit. He trusted her to be.

Chapter 206: Bad Ideas
Characters: Ruby, Law Rating: T Warnings: Language, violence mention Notes: and the plot thickens. I saw a tweet recently saying we know that the exact date of One Piece is around March 17! So that meaaaaaaannnnssssss....
~~~~~~
Ruby watched Law pace anxiously around their room, mumbling to himself. She stood in the doorway and watched him silently for a moment. Something was wrong. She swallowed and walked in cautiously.
“Law?” She called him.
He stopped and turned to look at her. He closed his eyes and sighed. “How long have you been there?”
“Like, 5 minutes.” She walked up to him. “What’s wrong, mo chuisle?” He opened his gold eyes and stared into hers. He opened his mouth and closed it. She could practically hear his racing thoughts. “Is it about Doflamingo?”
For his part, he looked ashamed that Doflamingo had gotten to him again. He nervously shifted his weight before sighing again. “Yeah, something like that.”
Ruby hugged him, tucking her head under his chin. “Tell me what’s going on.”
Law wrapped his arms around her tightly. It felt like he was clinging to her desperately. They stayed quiet for some long moments, just breathing. He kissed her head and sighed.
“You look pretty today,” he said quietly. “I like the sweater.”
“Thanks.” He was right. She bought a new chunky green sweater and wore it with black skinny jeans so she was very cute today. “I’m always pretty, though.”
He chuckled. “True enough.” He pulled away and stared at her frown. “I’m sorry that I worry you the way I do.”
“If I wasn’t constantly worried about you I think something would be wrong.” He frowned at her joke. “It’s a joke, hon.”
“I know, but it’s still true.” He ran his fingers through his hair. He walked to the bed and sat down on it. Ruby followed him and sat next to him. She took his large hands in hers and held them tightly.
“What’s wrong, love?”
He groaned. “I know how to get to Punk Hazard,” he told her.
Ruby blinked surprised. “Which is...a good thing, isn’t it?”
“Yes, and I’m starting to be ready to go but...there are some hiccups.”
“Which are?”
“I don’t know the layout of Green Bit and I have no idea where the SMILE factory is. There’s no way for me to know without being there.” He turned his hands and rubbed hers with his thumbs.
“I see,” she sighed. “What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “That’s why I’m frustrated. I don’t know what to do. I...everything I’ve done...it’s come down to this and there’s a barrier in my way.” He stared at her desperately. “Tell me what to do, Ruby.”
Ruby frowned and looked at their hands. If it were up to her, she’d tell him to give up. To forget about Doflamingo and move on with his life. This couldn’t be what Corazón wanted for Law. Not if he truly loved him. All this pain and frustration. There was no way someone wished this upon him.
But she knew better than to say that out loud. They had already gotten into a huge fight over that before and didn’t speak to each other for almost a whole day because of it. It was actually the worst fight they’ve ever been in and she didn’t think they’d ever get into one that bad again. She knew she might’ve overstepped some boundaries but she still felt the same. They had apologized to each other and were back to normal quickly, but Ruby knew his short temper was because he was going to leave the crew soon and he didn’t want to go.
She swallowed. She had thought of a solution. One he would shoot down and maybe get them into a small argument over, but she had no other idea. He needed help. He needed support. He needed the layout of Dressrosa. He needed to know what the daily life in Dressrosa was like. He needed to know everything about Green Bit and where the factory might be.
She swallowed. “I...have an idea,” she said. “Not a good idea, mind you, but an idea.”
“I’ll take it.” He squeezed her hands. “Lay it on me.”
“You need to know Dressrosa, right? Need to know both it and Green Bit.”
“Yeah.”
“So...you need eyes on the island,” she said slowly. He stared at her confused for a moment before realization dawned on his face.
“Ruby…”
“Send me.” He didn’t say anything. “Send me to Dressrosa.”
He stared at her, his eyes wide. He frowned deeply, his brows furrowing.
“Absolutely not.”
“Law-”
He stood up, letting go of her hands. “That’s not just a bad idea, it’s a stupid idea. You’re not going.”
Ruby rolled her eyes. She knew this would happen. She knew he’d argue. She knew he’d be against it. “Stop and think for a moment, Law. You need someone on the island. You need someone to feed you information about the island and the Family and all that shit. Who on this boat do you trust to get that done without issues? Who do you think could be the stealthiest and best spy? It’s me, I’ll answer that for you.”
He frowned at her and started to glare. “You’re not going. You’re staying here, where you’re safe.” She knew his hotheadedness was because he loved her. He wanted her safe from Doflamingo. He wanted to get his whole kill Doflamingo thing done without anyone getting involved, hurt, or dying. And that was naïve.
“I’m going.” She stood up. He looked into her eyes, his gaze burning. “You’re not my father, Law. You can’t stop me.”
“I’m your captain.”
“You’re not stopping me because you’re my captain. You’re stopping me because I’m your girlfriend.”
He went silent but his gaze was just as fierce. “I’d stop any of you from going.”
Ruby sighed. “Law, you need to calm down and think rationally. Getting mad at me isn’t going to help.”
“I’m not mad at you,” he said intensely before deflating. “I’m mad that it’s even an idea. None of you are supposed to be caught up in this,” he paused. “Especially not you,” he added quietly. He reached over for her arms. “You’re not supposed to get hurt.”
“Who says I’m going to get hurt?” She grinned at him. “I’m Sela D. Ruby! I don’t get hurt.”
He stared at her. He stared at her hard. “Now you’re really not going.” Ruby scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Ruby, I have recurring nightmares of him torturing and killing you. How am I supposed to agree to this insane plan?”
“Well, what else can you do?”
“I will go on my own and figure it out.”
“And get yourself killed? No. Just accept that this is the safest option for everyone.”
“Except for you.” He said. “You haven’t convinced me. You won’t convince me. Ruby, listen to me.” He squeezed her arms in his hands. “I absolutely love you.” She smiled softly. “It’s my job to protect you and care for you. It’s my job to see that you’re safe and unharmed, and yes, not just because I’m your captain.” He paused. “I can’t let you do this.” His voice shook. “I can’t lose you.” He pulled her into a hug. “If he takes you from me…” he trailed off and held her tighter.
Ruby wrapped her arms around him. She pressed her manicured nails into his back gently. She didn’t say anything. She knew how he was about losing people. She knew how he was about losing her. She nuzzled him. They stood in the middle of their bedroom holding onto each other tightly for some quiet minutes. Law obviously did not want to let her go.
“Give me any other idea,” he told her quietly.
Ruby sighed. “I don’t have any.”
He pulled away and stared at her. He took her face in his hands and kissed her. “I can’t agree to this,” he told her. “I just can't.”
“Let’s sit back down,” she suggested and pulled him towards the bed. “Are you done being mad?” He nodded. “Law, I’m tired of seeing you frustrated and stressed over this.” She grabbed his hand and traced his tattoos. “You need help. Let me help you.”
“You are already. You’ve been supporting me. That’s all I need.”
“Except it’s not. Law, how long were you pacing and talking to yourself?”
“It doesn’t matter. I need you here with the crew. I need you to be safe . ”
“I will be,” she said with a grin. “I’m not going to fight anyone. I’m just gonna be in Dressrosa for a while and feed you info about the island. When you come to Dressrosa, you’ll pick me up. You do what you planned on doing, and we get out. Easy.” He looked very uncomfortable at that. Something in his eyes told her he was holding something back. “Listen, I know that you worry over me and that you think I get injured at every turn-”
“I don’t think that, I know that.”
“Law, I survived on my own for 24 years,” she continued on, ignoring his interruption. “I can survive on my own for a couple months.”
“This is different.”
“Is it? I’ve always been in danger. I’ve always had a gun up against my head in one way or another. I’m older now. I’m more experienced. I know how to survive,” she reiterated.
“It’s not just about surviving. It’s about…” he trailed off. “I don’t want you to be alone.”
Ruby smiled sadly. “I’ll be okay.”
He was silent for a moment before closing his eyes. “I know,” he said quietly. “I know you’re strong and capable. I know you would be the best choice in a situation like this.” He opened his eyes.
“Then what’s the problem?”
“Ruby,” he said desperately. “If I lose you, then I…” he swallowed. “I don’t want to go the rest of my life knowing I could’ve stopped you. I don’t want you to die and leave me. I don’t want to be alone. Can’t you understand that? Do you not understand how much I love you?”
“I know.” She took his sorrowful face in her hands. “I understand.” He grabbed her wrists and shut his eyes tight. “Law, love, I’m trying to make this easier on both of us.” He opened his glassy eyes. “If I can guarantee that you will make it out alive and safely, then I will do whatever it takes. I don’t want to lose you to Doflamingo, either. I just want to make sure that you’re safe because I know you’re leaving me soon. I know that no matter what I say you’re going to leave me.” She swallowed. “Please, let me help you.”
She wanted to see Law smiling again. He didn’t smile like he used to. He didn’t give her his soft smile in the dark that was reserved only for her. She was tired of his frustration and spiraling. She wanted to rip Doflamingo apart so that Law never thought about him again and they could go on with the rest of their lives. She wanted Law safe, and she knew her idea was the best way to do it.
Ruby rubbed his cheeks with her thumbs. He sighed. “I don’t want you to go,” he said like a depressed child. “You’re mine, I don’t want to let you go.” He leaned his forehead against hers. “I know you’re doing this to relieve some of my stress but it made me more stressed.”
“Sorry, love.”
He sighed. “When would you leave?” He asked after a few moments.
“Before you leave for Punk Hazard. That way I can feed you info while you’re home and not raise any suspicion while you’re there. When did you plan on leaving?”
“I wasn’t sure, since I…didn’t have all of the information.” He pulled away from her. “I don’t like this.”
“I know.” She took his hand. “But can you give me a better solution?” He didn’t answer her. “Then it’s decided.” He closed his eyes and swallowed. “We’ll figure out when we need to go, and then...I’ll go.”
“You were never supposed to be caught up in this,” he said quietly. “You were supposed to sail on with the crew. You were supposed to get your cottage and garden.”
“Law,” she said seriously. “I won’t die. Believe in me.”
He looked at her sadly. “I do, but I have to know all the outcomes, and you dying is one of them.”
“I won’t die,” she repeated. “Just like you won’t. We’ll go home together, putting this all behind us.”
He let out a long sigh, his eyes still glassy from unshed tears. “Okay, I’ll agree to this idea of yours if you promise to be careful. Don’t be loud or grab anyone's attention. I know you’re hot, but tone it down.”
Ruby burst out laughing. “Oh, mo chuisle, I love you so much.” She leaned in and rubbed her nose against his. “I will be careful, no one will know I’m there.”
He closed his eyes slowly and opened them again. “You’ll have to be careful and quiet. We won’t be able to talk often. Anyone can listen in on a den den mushi. Virtually no mail or packages.” He frowned. “We won’t be able to see each other for a couple months.”
Ruby felt her stomach clench for a moment. “That’s nothing compared to the rest of our lives,” she grinned through her sadness. “You and I are going to be together until we die of old age.”
He finally smiled. “I hope you’re right, babe.”
“I’m always right.”
He rolled his eyes but didn’t argue. “I don’t know when this will all happen, but for now...let’s just…” he stopped.
Ruby smiled. “Do you want to sit in silence together before we go to dinner?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
Ruby wrapped her arm around his and laid her head on his shoulder. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. This was for the best. This would keep Law safe. And within the next few months, this will be all over and they would be free to live their lives the way she knew Corazón intended for Law in the first place.
