a little unorganised bunch of thoughts because the lb tag left me a bit of a sour aftertaste today.
i’ve read many opinions and tbh idc why pld wanted a trade.
what’s sure is that dude wanted out asap and he used the most efficient way to get it done, and i guess he wanted it done so much he didn’t care what kind of hit his reputation took. i hated to see the team struggle and i was happy seeing that a cloud had clearly lifted from their minds today but still. from his standpoint, he obtained what he wanted all right.
pld doing primadonna acting? very likely. but since i don’t know his motivations, i don’t feel completely comfortable summing the whole thing up as ‘he’s a dude making 5 million this year, he could have beared this a little.’ maybe he really could. maybe he actually couldn’t.
torts having a coaching method that isn’t ideal for everyone? i doubt anyone can argue with this. do i believe that was the reason pld wanted out? i don’t know. just because jarmo says it wasn’t, well, all due respect but he’s not a neutral source in this. was it the contract talks that soured things to the point of no return? kekäläinen is known for not being someone easy to negotiate with, but i guess we’ll never know unless pld himself speaks.
i have a love/hate relationship with tortorella, because he clearly loves his teams but like. i’ve always been of the opinion that shouting as a teaching method wastes more talent than it actually nurtures, and while that’s more of a general concept that likely doesn’t apply as evenly in sports, the thing is, i do think that tortorella sometimes lacks adaptability and that his coaching method is getting old. he wants his players to give their everything, but i don’t think he is capable of motivating all of them to do so, and sometimes he’s very punishing in a way that i don’t think is evenly applied to the team. let’s not talk about the way he handles press because that’s another can of worms and my opinion of him regarding to that is extremely low.
i think that tortorella was right in benching pld last time but the thing is. i get that it was probably a breaking point. still, we’re talking about a game that went to ot. and probably it’s just me who had fucked up experiences and because of that sees this kind of thing everywhere, but benching a dude not just for a period but for the whole game while the others have to work even more (and in extra time) because of that, it looks to me more like the perfect recipe to make someone be resented even more by the rest of the group, rather than a lesson on working hard being taught. this episode was the thing that kind of made me shift from ‘hmm i don’t like the situation’ to ‘idc this is very uncomfortable just do this trade and shut up about this whole shitshow from all sides.’
anyway, lb (here, on twitter). i get that when a trade this big and in such circumstances happens, people are going to be bitter about it, and i have to admit that i’ve been in a piss poor mood for my own reasons lately, so me feeling irritated is more on me than anyone else, but seeing people bending backwards to defend one side or the other of this perceived pld vs tortorella debacle has been the most pitiful spectacle in a while and if it wasn’t for elvis, korpi and maybe boone jenner on the good days i’m starting to wonder if i should block all the jackets-related content on my dash for a bit. thank god winnipeg and columbus aren’t going to see each other for quite a while because if i read another ‘gotcha’ post about one or the other i’m starting to wish both teams to get shelled by ottawa and florida respectively.
idk i don’t have a point to make i’m just frustrated by that not very enjoyable lb experience lately. if any of you read this whole thing i 1. applaud you and 2. am sorry but i guess i just needed to rant and it’s almost 2am so i can’t just talk to the void that is my father’s blissful ignorance of all things hockey. yeet
