idk for me it's just something about the parallel of the names.

freddie and rosie only ever use the nicknames they got in the war with each other because the previous versions of themselves before they met don't matter. it doesn't matter that they loved before or that freddie was going to get married or that they come from different places. it matters that they found each other and they are who they are now and they go together now and they love each other now. the versions of themselves that matter are the ones who met and fell in love. they'll always be freddie and rosie to each other, never wilfrieda and robert.

but stella and john met and they were finley and bucky. and they're finley and bucky to everyone. except each other. because everyone else sees the versions of them they want to see, and they see the real versions of each other. john sees the girl who loves birds and still sleeps with a teddy bear and is still holding on so tight to everyone she's ever loved even if they don't love her back. and stella sees the boy who loves people harder than they love him and doesn't like to make a spectacle of himself but knows that's what everyone wants from him and finds it difficult to connect even when he's surrounded by people. they'll always be their real, truest selves to each other. never finley and bucky, only ever stella and john.
