SECTION TWO: MEETING THE CLIENT &  FIRST AND SECOND LEVEL QUESTIONNAIRES (1.2)
To kickstart the project, I first have to understand what the expectation & needs of my client are. As this is a self initiated project, I will be my own client. This stage gives me a chance to narrow down ideas and create a clear plan for what is expected of me & my client. It also gives me the ability to identify any skills gap & limitations to my idea or project, identifying them at this stage my allow me to make changes that won’t majorly effect my plan.
Below are my first set of questions, this is a general overview of what is expected:
1. Have you used indesign before?
Not in depth, no. I’ve used it briefly on a previous project but only on surface level. It didn’t allow me to experience all the software has to offer and never to this scale.
Although I will be teaching myself how to use it in depth through a wide range of resources such as lynda.com, youtube & infographics on Pinterest.
2. Have you hosted an event before?
Not independently, I’ve worked within one element of an event to assist, so this will be a big learning curve for me but I definitely think it’s something I would love to do in the future. Event planning is some that brings together a lot creative and management attributes so this will help prepare me for that in the later future.
3. What are the main aims of the video installation event?
I want the Compounds project to touch people through its digital and cognitive elements -- the music, visuals & spoken word. The aim is to open them up to the possibilities that someone can compartmentalise themselves into one box but can belong and identify with a range of different groups or personalities or in this case - Compounds. Compounds is a word we use for Home back in Africa but it’s also used in the science world for a mixture of more than 2 elements.
4. Who is your target audience?
There is no particular target audience in mind as I believe that spoken word, poets and speech is on the rise & that people may benefits for learning something new especially with the rise of social media, people seem to becoming less connected and compassionate to others  & their identities, styles, aesthetics etc; hopefully this might spark a new thought in their heads.
---------
In the next set of questions it will allow go into depth & detail about other aspects of the project, this is where i’ll be able to identity any faults or limitations.
Below are my second and final tier of questions:
1. What examples of visual language, editing style & content can you give to summarise your ideal final piece (branding, format, colours & fonts etc)?
Mixed media
San serif secondary fonts & accent primary fonts
Clashing neutrals & bright colours
*Look to section 6 for further mood board elements
2. About the event, do you have a location in mind, duration & a contingency plan?
In terms of any specifics for the event, I don’t have a location in mind. I understand that securing a location & getting people to attend is a difficult task due to external factors, so in a case that I cannot do a physical event; I would want to do a virtual experience that would work similarly to the physical event. The duration of the event is dependant on whether its physical or digital -- flexible.
This would consist of choosing a select amount of people, emailing them a private link to the film linked through Youtube, along with a readme/program to understand what the project is about and its aim & recommending them to pass it on if it struck a nerve.
3. In terms of the additional media, do you have a format in mind?
I would like to include a small A4/5 booklet to introduce the project, what its about, and how to give feedback afterwards. I was thinking a landscape format to correlate with landscapes and how compounds to me mean home.
4. What elements can be altered if anything changes course?
Location
Duration
5. How long would you like the written piece & short film?
I would like for the duration of the short film to be around 3 - 5 mins, it allows to apply the themes that I would like & for the piece to make a lasting impact on my audience; hopefully leaving them with a good lasting thought.
6. What themes do you want to come across within the project?
Segmentation
Digital disconnect
Meaningful connections through shared common interests
Social Culture
Introduction & acceptance to new cultures
As this is a one time event, the detail needed is a lot but by collecting this information hopefully I can depict any resources that may be needed to complete the task.

Tridapta - An Interface for Everyone
User Need
Over 54 million people in the United States have arthritis, a disease that makes it difficult to use the joints in the hands and wrists to perform everyday tasks (CDC). This disease is currently incurable, and its effects can severely limit patients’ abilities to use computers, which involve significant wrist, thumb, and finger motion. In order to help these patients interface with computers, ergonomic mice have been created, but innovation in this space has remained stagnant over the past few years. Patients with arthritis will live with it for the rest of their lives, and in an increasingly technology-saturated world, it is imperative for these individuals to seamlessly interface with technology. For this project, our target user is affected by arthritis but wants to continue to easily interface with computers.
Expert Interviews
In order to better understand the pathology of arthritis, how it affects patients, and what devices exist on the market to help patients with this disease interface with computers, we interviewed Dr. Shiv Sehra, a rheumatologist at Mt. Auburn Hospital, Catherine Wee, a physical therapist at Spaulding Rehab Center, and one of the designers who created an ergonomic mouse called the Handshoe mouse. We learned that rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis affect different joints in the hands, and that a comprehensive solution must alleviate strain in both the wrists and thumbs. We found that younger patients were more likely to be negatively affected by being unable to use technology. In talking to Ms. Wee, we learned that patients adapt, often inefficiently, to keyboards that are too painful to use, which leads them to type with two fingers. She also highlighted a lack of innovation in the space, noting that few new devices had been produced for this market in the last 25 years. By talking to the mouse designer, we learned that the Handshoe mouse has been rigorously designed to support the wrist and hand, and that the aesthetics of the mouse were deliberately chosen to appeal to the most people. Given this information, we identified the following requirements for our device:
Utilize current technology to provide patients with an experience that feels modern
Adapt technology to fit patients’ behaviors, and provide flexibility to meet different clinical needs
Alleviate any strain on the wrist and thumb
The Solution
Thus, after reviewing the results of our field and online research with professionals in the design and chiropractic industries, we decided to build a comprehensive solution that provided multiple avenues of facilitating computer usage among those affected by arthritis. Our product has 3 components: one, a voice command system powered by Dragon Voice; two, a hand motion detector using LeapMotion technology; and three, KeyTweak which is a software that allows users to swap the position of keys on their keyboard.
Hand motion detector: Our hand motion detector packages LeapMotion technology into a much sleeker and cleaner design that users can mount onto their laptops. Essentially an adhesive black strip, TriDapta’s hand motion detector is meant to provide an alternative to a computer mouse or laptop trackpad. Often these two things can cause undue strain on our hands from constant clicking or improper hand position for prolonged periods of time. Our detector strip allows users to control their screens without having to touch any surface, making it a superior alternative for those that want to avoid exerting pressure using their fingers.
Voice Control: Using Dragon speech recognition software, users can control their computer using voice commands such as “swipe right” or “scroll down.” Additionally, they can dictate their thoughts and documents. Speech recognition is especially handy for users that need to type something quickly, such as responding to a text or transcribing a document.
KeyTweak: KeyTweak is useful for users who have specific problems reaching certain keys on their keyboard. Using KeyTweak, users can modify their keyboard to best suit their needs, such as moving the space bar to the shift key or double-tapping a key to change it to uppercase. We imagine that software engineers and coders especially will find this feature useful.
User Experience
Our product is unique because it combines existing innovation in the industry into a “one-stop shop” of adaptive technology features that customers can buy to fix their existing computers. The value of our product is that it is made to modify an existing laptop in a super easy fashion, so customers don’t have to go out and buy a new laptop or deal with complicated instructions. Furthermore, with just the addition of an approximately 3 inch by 0.5 inch black strip in the corner of the laptop, TriDapta is fairly inconspicuous, thus avoiding the possible stigma of using adaptive technology that a large clunky mouse might evoke.
TriDapta can be purchased in stores, such as in Apple or Best Buy, or online. It comes as a small box, containing the LeapMotion strip. After purchasing, customers can complete the installation of the TriDapta suite of products by going on the website where they can download our software containing the voice recognition, motion detection, and KeyTweak technologies onto their computers.
Value Add
Our product uses technology from multiple different companies, and therefore we require a strong value proposition to convince these companies to work with us, and a clear value add for consumers. In order to partner with these companies, we plan on approaching them by highlighting the lack of innovation in assistive devices for people with arthritis, noting the number of people living with the disease, and proposing that our product will drive more consumers to these companies. Since arthritis is incurable, a strong product could be used by patients throughout the remainder of their lives, creating a loyal consumer base. For users, we provide an integrated platform that removes the technical challenges of using these products separately. We not only integrate all three technologies into a cohesive platform, we also ensure that users are able to access the latest technology, as we will regularly update our products. Instead of wrangling with three different platforms, we give users the ease of using one streamlined product.

Interview Two
Q1: Now that the first issue has gone to print, has anything changed in regards to the preferred style?
A: Yes, I think it would be better if we opted for a more minimal, professional look instead, I liked your previous design but I think the next articles will be more suited to a cleaner layout. I think if a combination of the previous style is used along with more white space and more original images, that would be the perfect style.
Q2: What will the feature article of this issue be? Could I write and design this myself?
A: As we do not have a clear cover story I’d be happy for you to add in some themed pieces, however I do have a potential interview lined up with Ex Catfish and the Bottlemen guitarist Billy Bibby. If that goes ahead I’d like to design the cover myself and have that interview as the feature.
Q3: In regards to font, would you prefer a more consistent style to aline with the cleaner design? Is the size of the font still ok after seeing the printed edition?
A: As interesting as different font styles for each page was, I think picking a few font styles and sticking to them would suit the style better this time, yes.
Q4: Do you have a page plan for this issue?
A: No, as I have been very busy and we don’t have enough articles as of yet to create the page plan, I would be grateful if you could put the plan together and maybe source some articles yourself. Please try to attain the “Ode to” piece from Josh as I think that would be a good show of consistency.

Second Level Questionnaire
Is there a specific date you have in mind of when you will need all this to be completed?
“I don’t want this to be rushed so no I don’t have a deadline for you but I would like to see it all up and running soon, I mean the sooner the better but I would like to see quality stuff rather than it being rushed”
Would you like music running through your video? If so, what type of music?
“That would be nice, maybe some light music running in the background to make it a bit more pleasurable to watch”
Do you have any upcoming orders of which I will be able to film you and interview you with a camera?
“I am always quite busy with my cakes, but some occasions more busier than others. I mean Valentine’s day is coming up so perhaps you could film a cake I make for that. Or whenever you are next in London.. Hopefully I have an order to do”
Do you have any final questions you would like to ask me?
“I think you have pretty much covered everything, just let me know in advance if you need to meet so that we can arrange dates that suit us both.”

What I’ve Got - Thick/Thin Eyeliner
I use Maybelline’s Thick/Thin eyeliner and I really like the flexibility it gives me to try different makeup styles. The tip of the brush is flat, so it can be used to paint thick or thin lines, which makes this brush more versatile than most standard brushes. I also like the formula they use, which is fairly waterproof, so it doesn’t smear or smudge from daily use.

Questionnaire 2
Email to Jack in response to the first questionnaire;
Hello Jack, Thank you for filling out the questionnaire, I just have a few more final questions to ensure I have all the information I need, I have attached it to this email. Thanks, Hiten.
What would you like the logo to look like? I would like for it to incorporate my initials JM, if you can create something with that, that’ll be amazing. I don’t want anything too messy or complicated, keep it simple.    When do you expect the website to go live? The website should be live by March, with a week or 2 of contingency time in case any changes have to be made to the project. Is there a specific domain you would want? If you can get a domain name with my name for example www.JackMunsch.co.uk or something similar to that, the important thing is that it must have my name within it. Do you have any questions? No, I believe that has covered most things.
Hi Hiten, I have attached the replies to the second questionnaire, hope that clears it up. Thanks, Jack.
Hi Jack, Thank you very much, that’s been a great help. I will start designing an initial idea for the website and send it over to you once its completed. Thanks, Hiten

Section 2: Scoping The Project
Meeting the Client:
On December the 20th i sat down with my client  to go over his ideas that he wanted to make clear to me. It was easy to communicate this, especially with him being a family member, so i knew him well enough already to get to understand what his tastes and preferences are. I wrote down all his needs and wants and discussed with him his passion for photography and how it started. We agreed that i would produce the logo as i have past experience with Adobe software such as Illustrator. Dave has filled out my questionnaires so that i have more of an understanding on what my client clearly wants out of this website. This gave me the opportunity to go and develop his ideas and plan out his website further in detail.
Identify the clients previous multimedia experience:
Dave has had experience when using Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop with his development of his own photographs. He is used to using complicated software these programmes and thats why we decided that a website is best to show off his photographs. I will be leaving Dave to manage the website himself as he is previously aware of what he needs to do to develop the website further. However he doesn't have any experience when designing a logo so i will be taken that job on in order to get it done in the available time slot.  I will also be taking the job on of making the business cards for him to get the business started. Dave only really has Facebook as a social media communication. Therefore its my responsibility to create Dave an Instagram and possibly an group page on Facebook to get his photographs out there in the social networking community. I don't think Twitter needs to be involved with the field and subject matter that this surrounds.

Interview One
Q1: Are there any constraints on images used in the issue?
A: No, as we are a free publication there are very few constraints. Some writers have included images with their submissions, whether you use them or not is your choice.
Q2: Do you have a preferred colour scheme?
A: Yes, each section of the magazine has a set colour and I would rather the front cover was eye-catching and bright.
Q3: Do you have a preference on which logos are used, and where?
A: Yes, the official landscape photo that has been approved by the Union must be used on the cover, and the square logo for the contents page and inside cover.
Q4: Is there any possibility of editing the logos letter spacing and layout?
A: no, please use the logos provided
Q5: Is there any information that must be included in the publication?
A: Yes, the disclaimer that the publication belongs to the union must be on the same page as the editor’s letter
Q6: Do you have a page layout organised for the order of the articles?
A: yes, I will send it over to you to work from
Q7: Have you considered a cover story and the graphics you would like featured on the cover of the first issue?
A: Yes, we now know that we will do a feature on “back to the future” so the graphics need to reflect that, the nike trainers in a cartoon style would be ideal.
Q8:  How many pages must the magazine be, can I create double page spreads for longer articles or do you have specific ones you want on a double page?
A: Forty pages is the maximum to be sent to print, any of the longer articles can go over two pages.
Q9: In regards to font, is there a particular size or font style that must be used?
A: No smaller than size nine, and no particular font styles. Different styles for each title would keep things interesting, don’t worry about mixing it up a bit.
Q10: Can I deviate from the page plan if articles are too long, or should I send them back to edit for shortening?
A: You can adjust the page plan as you need, some articles are still waiting to be written, so priorities the ones I have sent you.

First Level Questionnaire
What kind aspects would you like included in your promotional video?
“What I wanted from the video is just for people to be able to see what I do, and that everything I create is from scratch and all hand made. Perhaps you could ask me some questions so that people can see who I am and why I do this for a living. Might be a nice idea for you to film small parts of me creating a cake so people can see the process in a real life situation.”
Is there a specific audience for Cake Arrangements?
“Absolutely not, I make cakes and other sweet treats for all occasions whether it’s a child's birthday, a wedding or a retirement party. I want that to be portrayed through the video and show that I do not appeal to anyone specific but to everyone.”
Why do you think the promotional video will help promote your business?
“Making cakes is not just a job for me, but it’s my passion.. I enjoy it! I want to show my skill and my abilities through the video so that hopefully people can show more interest in what I do. Hopefully putting the video on my existing website would be a better way to showcase this.”
As you would like for me to create a logo for CA, are there any specific colour themes you want running through? Colours you want be included in your logo, video, business cards and instagram page?
“I don’t actually have a specific colour theme as I want to appeal to as many people as possible, I would say keep it natural with pastel colours on the logo at least. Some of my cakes are super colourful so on the instagram page that will shine through.”
What information would you like to feature on your business cards?
“I have seen other business cards and they all seem to feature the same basic info, all I would need is my business name, logo, contact details and perhaps a short sentence that sums up what I do, if you need any help with that just let me know”
Would you like a brief description of what you do and who you are to be included on the instagram page?
“Yes  of course, if there is like a person description section then just put perhaps my email and what I do, that I make cakes and sweet treats for everyone. But the pictures on there will be what people really come to see, right?”
