5G Telecoms Network Coverage in Nigeria PT2 - Dr Kenny Odugbemi
Tumblr media
5G telecoms network coverage in Nigeria
Tumblr media
5G Telecoms Network Coverage in Nigeria The 5G network provides a greater speed in the transmissions, a lower latency and therefore greater capacity of remote execution. It also serves a greater number of connected devices and the possibility of implementing virtual networks (network slicing), providing more adjusted connectivity to concrete needs. This will enable telecom operators in the country to deliver the right level of effective digital solutions to power Nigeria’s economic growth. But at the moment less than 2% of mobile phone connections in Sub-Saharan Africa are on 5G, and some telecom experts said this number is not likely to increase this year. However, a report by Ericsson said it is likely to reach 7% in 2026. With their rollout in Nigeria, MTN and Mafab might have given the country an edge over South Africa and Kenya in the 5G race in Africa. Both operators are expected to increase the number of their 5G sites to over 1000 this year. This will make the latest telecom technology ubiquitous in the country. Their 5G network launch will also assist the Federal Government to achieve its 70% broadband internet penetration target by 2025. States that have 5G network in Nigeria As of now, 5G can only be found in any accredited site across seven states in the country. These states are Lagos(Lagos), Abuja, Port Harcourt (Rivers), Ibadan (Oyo), Kano (Kano), Owerri (Imo), Maiduguri (Borno), and Kano and Enugu will be launched soon. MTN and Mafab said more sites are also being worked on within these states. How to access 5G in Nigeria Basically, there are two major ways to connect to 5G in Nigeria: By using a 5G router, or by using a 4G sim (they are also 5G enabled) on a phone that is both 5G-compatible and 5G-enabled. 5G-compatible phones are built with the 5G network technology, enabling them to access 5G networks where available. Recent phones manufactured by Samsung, iPhone, Redmi, Xiaomi, Nokia, and Huwai and others models are 5G compatible. 5G enablement, on the other hand, is the backend integration of the phone models into the operators’ 5G network, enabling these phones to access 5G services within their accredited sites nationwide. The 5G router is the second option and is a non-restrictive way for everyone to access 5G in Nigeria. Users can buy the device from any 5G operator Inand if they’re within a 5G site, they can use any device to connect to the 5G network through WiFi. 5G and data consumption Tech experts said 5G would definitely require more data for the seamless experience it provides, but it won’t be anything too much from the experience of existing 4G subscribers. For example, when watching a Youtube video on a 4G network, 4k is the maximum resolution that can be obtained. With 5G, the resolution doesn’t increase beyond 4k, and the data expense will also stay the same. However, doing a speed test with a 5G network will cost more data, as 5G networks can transfer more data in the speed test process. 5G, business outfits would expand their frontiers with operational ease and speed, especially in the fields of education. medical sciences, engineering, security, businesses like the banking sector, SMEs and smart cities, among others and that the 5G would not just benefit the urban areas but also meet long-term goals of ensuring that rural areas and villages enjoyed benefits of this amazing technology. “The rollout of Mafab 5G network is the beginning of immense opportunities for the country as it represents Nigeria’s capabilities and infinite possibilities. The prospect of increased job opportunities as a consequence of the value-chain benefits the technology will generate and offer is the dream we have all gathered here to launch today. “It is no secret that the countries that can provide their citizens with the latest network infrastructure which the 5G technology represents, will also be the ones that will thrive in the coming years. “They will be the ones that will stay competitive and the ones who will lead in innovation in addition to bringing socio-economic benefits to their citizens. And so, I can declare that with the 5G infrastructure, Nigeria will surely be a head ahead of many other countries, especially in Africa. Indeed, with the 5G network, our future as a people and as a country is remarkably bright, 5G has enormous benefits for security institutions, because there are technologies in security that leverage on it which allows security institutions to properly manage security situations. Conclusion MTN Nigeria emerged as the two successful winners of the 3.5gigahertz (GHz) spectrum auction for the deployment of 5G technology in Nigeria. NCC also confirmed that the two companies fully paid $273.6 million each for the 5G spectrum licence in February 2022. Read the full article

5g Era Of The Big Winner-PCB
Why PCB is the winner in the 5G era?
First, 5G base stations compared to 4G will have an increase in the number. According to public
data from China's three major telecom operators, in 2016 China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom added 400,000 4G base stations, 380,000, 340,000, respectively, raising the total to 1.51 million, 890,000, 740,000, a total of about 3.14 million. And it is estimated that the number of small base stations alone will be more than 10 times the current base station market.
Second, due to the characteristics of 5G high speed and high frequency, the value of the communication board will also be greatly enhanced in terms of individual base stations. On the one hand, with the increase of 5G frequency bands, the increase in frequency makes the number of RF front-end components increase significantly, as well as Massive MIMO integration to the AAU, the use of PCB circuit boards on the AAU area increased significantly, the number of layers increased, the added value of the antenna AAU to the PCB board and copper laminate; on the other hand, with the significant increase in 5G transmission data, the data processing capacity of the base station BBU has On the other hand, with the significant increase of 5G transmission data, there is a higher requirement for the data processing capacity of BBU of base station, which will adopt larger area and higher layer PCB, and the base material needs to use high speed and high frequency material. Conservative estimates show that the PCB telecommunication for 5G value of a single 5G macro base station is more than twice that of 4G.
5G cell phones and tablet PCs and other thin and light demand to drive the FPC market
IDC has predicted that the first 5G smartphones will be available in the second half of 2019, and 5G phone shipments will reach 7% of total smartphone shipments by 2020 (about 212 million units), and 18% by 2022.
According to industry research, the new Apple phone at least 20 pieces of FPC material number, the value of space more than $ 20, and flat-panel products are expected to further thin and light, will use a large number of FPC products. At the same time, leading domestic brands such as Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, etc. have also improved the amount of FPC to 10-12 pieces.
In 2016, the global market size of FPC grew to 85.2 billion yuan, and the market size of FPC in China grew to 31.6 billion yuan. It is expected that by 2021, China FPC market is expected to reach 51.6 billion yuan, with a compound growth rate of 10%.
Automotive electronics, electrification, and intelligence will bring incremental market space for PCBs
First, intelligent driving & automotive electronics: the electronicization of the car will bring the growth of automotive PCB usage, automotive electronics accounted for about 30% of the vehicle BOM in 2010, the proportion is expected to rise to 50% by 2030. The current mid-range models PCB use an area of about 0.5 to 0.7 square meters, the economic car PCB use an area of 0.3 to 0.4 square meters, assuming that the average PCB assembly price is 1000 yuan / square meter, the average value of about 800 yuan per car, luxury cars PCB use an area of about 2.5-3 square meters, the value of more than 2500 yuan per car, with the deepening of automotive electronics, automotive PCB demand area will gradually increase. Automotive PCB demand area will gradually grow. In addition, the advanced driver assistance system for intelligent driving ADAS also requires a large number of PCBs.
Second, new energy vehicles: new energy vehicles than traditional cars with PCB volume has been greatly enhanced, if the preliminary estimate of single-vehicle PCB for 3 square meters, assuming that the average price of PCB is 1,000 yuan / square meter, the new energy vehicles in 2018 to 2020 corresponding PCB new market size of 2.850 billion yuan, 3.960 billion yuan, 5.430 billion yuan.
 Cloud Computing
Data centers drive the demand for high-end PCB products such as high-frequency and high-speed currently global data centers to high speed, high capacity and other characteristics of development. According to IDC, the global data center market size reached $45.2 billion in 2016, with a growth rate of 17%. China's data center growth is significantly faster than the global pace, with a scale of 71.5 billion RMB in 2016, a growth rate of 37%.

7 Best Pocket WiFi in the Philippines in 2022
by Filipino Virtual Assistance
Reposted by: Aika Virtual Assistant Services - http://aikavaservices.com
According to Speedtest Global Index, in February 2021, the Philippines ranked as the “ninety-second” country in terms of internet speed with an average of 38.46 Mbps. This proves that we have a slow internet connection in the country. Yet, we always find ways to make most of our “slow internet connection.” Aside from wired fiber plans and mobile data, one of the best options that Filipinos are making use of is Pocket WiFis. What could be the best pocket WiFi in the Philippines?
📷
What is a Pocket WIFI?
Pocket WiFi is a small portable device that connects one or more gadgets to the internet. It is often called Portable WiFi Router, Mobile WiFi, and MiFi. Whatever you call it, this device creates a WiFi access point in any location with cellular network coverage. It converts 3G, 4G, LTE (Long Term Evolution), and 5G signal into a Private WiFi signal.
Why Pocket WiFi?
Pocket WiFi is helpful, especially with a power outage or traveling, and you need a portable internet connection alternative. Considering you can use your smartphone’s mobile data to have internet access. Yet, why is that pocket WIFI is a better option?
Your smartphone might provide you an instant internet. Yet, your phone has so many features, making the battery not last longer. On the other hand, pocket Wi-Fi is more advantageous considering it is solely for providing internet. Thus, you can use it longer, and you can connect with multiple devices.
Also, this device can be your backup from your ‘main’ internet connection if the signal fails. Or, if you’re a remote worker traveling away from home, this device provides a backup network connection anywhere you go.
And if your smartphone fails? You can use pocket WiFi to provide instant internet for you to write a quick email or update others that your phone is out temporarily.
And most significantly, you should use this device because:

The cell phone GSM
This is significant to the present part as there are an ever-extending number of downloadable applications to convey secure videoconferencing to cell phone and tablet gadgets. There is restricted data about versatile messaging and composed correspondence for psychological wellness (Anthony et al., 2010; Clough and Casey, 2011); be that as it may, data on portable VTC for emotional wellness administrations is developing. There is a solid requirement for research to advise experts and patients about the one of a kind advantages and dangers with cell phones. Research is expected to see how VTC benefits over cell phones contrast with both up close and personal discussions and nonmobile VTC administrations. This raises new moral concerns. For instance, will there be equivalent access to versatile administrations given the lower portable appropriation rates among Don's age gathering? What desires will be set around where the VTC counsel happens given the expanded capacity to associate at practically any area? What occurs if the cell phone used to associate is lost or taken? What will be the nature of video transmission with the cell phones and will it be adequate to meet the clinical reason
The cell phone can be utilized to impart over long separations without wires. It works by speaking with a close by base station (additionally called a "phone site") which interfaces it to the principle telephone organize. While moving, if the cell phone escapes from the phone it is associated with, that phone makes an impression on another phone to advise the new cell to assume control over the call. This is known as a "hand off," and the consider proceeds with the new cell the telephone is associated with. The hand-off is done so well and cautiously that the client will generally never at any point realize that the call was moved to another phone.

The Main Difference Between 4G And Lite LTE Network
Tumblr media
There are a couple of acronyms that are used in the wireless broadband. LTE and the 4G are commonly used name in wireless broadband. Before you commence on buying a phone, it is essential to have an insight on difference kind of networks. The 4G is the fourth generation  of network. It was designed after the 3G. The international telecommunication union radio communication has clearly defined the 4G network. The peak speed of the 4G network in a high mobility connection should be 100 megabits per second. On the other hand, the peak speed in a stationary connection is 1gbits/s. The main work of ITU-R is to set the standard for the network. However, it does not have control over what is marketed is the 4G network. On the homepage of this company, you will discover more about the structure and role of the ITU-R. Consequently, you find 4G being slow in some areas than in others. The 4G connection was introduced in 2008 and many connected devices connect it. With 4G connection, a person can stream a long video or audio with having to worry about the size. initially, the 4G network was meant to be used by the developer. The 4G network was not supported by many networks at that time. Today many carriers support 4G. Click on this site to  discover more about  places in the world where the 4G network is supported. LTE is otherwise known as 4G LTE. Long term evolution is the short term on LTE. The connection of LTE is quicker than 3G but slower than 4G. The 3G network allow access of webpages and basic  streaming while 2G is used to send messages and minor data transfer. Click here now to learn about this network. It is uncomplicated to differentiate the two networks. The speed of the two is almost the same but the 4G is slightly faster. The two network works excellently if only your, phone and the service providers support the connection. In term of data consumption, 4G uses more data because it is quicker. On this page, you will learn more info about the difference between 4G and another network. You phone should  support 4G for you to browse at this high speed. Older phones cannot support the network because they are not built to support it. It is essential to ensure that the network provider supports the network before you embark on buying a 4G phone.   The 5g on the development. Its introduction is not meant to completely replace the other network. To ensure that there is connectivity in all places, it is essential to maintain another network. The estimated speed of 5g will be between 1 and 10 Gbit/s. Read more here about the fifth network.

PhoneX Review : Best Budget SmartPhone under $200
Tumblr media
Being 7x cheaper than flagships, I never thought PhoneX could be worth anything at all. Luckly I was intrigued by the design to pick it up. And then.
Tumblr media
"Numbers say nothing about a device", I used to say. I was a firm believer in pricey brand names. But the PhoneX completely flipped my way of thinking. The Phone X series from latest smartphone startup has helped shape what the budget smartphone segment in this world is today. We've had some iconic phones such as the XonePhone, and now the PhoneX, all of which upped the performance war in the budget segment by introducing powerful SoCs under $200. With a vibrant 6.3" screen, triple camera system for real life-alike photos and stellar performances powered by Android underneath the hood — the PhoneX is a true flagship phone. And with 32GB of space and ultra-fast facial recognition technology, you will be amazed to discover everything this phone has to offer. Get your PhoneX while it's still in stock for a discounted price at $199!
PhoneX design
Tumblr media
PhoneX's design just blew me away. It looked didn't look very different from its predecessor, like an extremely expensive flagship phone with its high screen-to-body ratio. I picked the phone up to be fascinated by the blue gradient body. My finger just naturally slid across the surface of the phone's back to what was — to my surprise — a fingerprint reader. PhoneX seems to have gone the extra mile and really knocked it out of the park in terms of design. Available in three striking colors, the PhoneX's best budget smartphone features a glass back which we haven't seen at this price point. The body also has a P2i nano coating, responsible to make this budget smartphone phone splash-proof. >>Free delivery available at your location. Check out availability. The ports are placed ergonomically, with the 3.5mm headphone socket at the top and the USB port down at the bottom. It's nice to see PhoneX has an IR blaster on the top, which can be used for controlling infrared home appliances via the Remote app. The PhoneX does have a white notification LED tucked on the usual top of display panel, making it easy to notice messages.
Tumblr media
Phone X has gone a step further and used Gorilla Glass 5 for the front and back of the phone, which is quite impressive at this price point. The sides are still plastic, but overall, this device feels very premium to hold. 😊
PhoneX specifications and features
The PhoneX features a Snapdragon 660, which is a chip that's become increasingly common in budget high performance smartphone segment. All thanks to price cuts over the past couple of months, smartphone processor prices have became stable. On paper, it's not as powerful as the iPhone is built around, but it's more than enough to handle its fair share of work. The fact that you can get this much power for just under $199 is an achievement in itself. The PhoneX starts with the variant (we are reviewing) 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage at that price (available), and another variant (not available) 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for $100 more. The PhoneX also supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5, 3 satellite navigation systems, USB-OTG, and the variety of sensors.
Tumblr media
PhoneX Camera, Performance and Battery Life
Packed with a decent set of features, it is no less than a best performance phone under $200. PhoneX is a good phone to live with for most day-to-day tasks. The processor has enough power to handle the usual social and productivity apps that we all use, and it even does a good job in games. Battery: The 4000 mAh battery on the PhoneX will last you a full day on a single charge and there’s fast charging support too. The original charger and accessories come bundled in the box. Unlike other budget smartphone, the PhoneX doesn't have any heating issues. Sure, the phone got warm after we played heavy titles such as PUBG Mobile or god of war for a little while, but it wasn't close enough to make us take a break between gaming sessions. Display: PhoneX has a big display, making it look taller. But the user interface has a one-handed software mode that can be activated with a swipe gesture on the Home button. This feature has lagged during test few times, but work as expected most of the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apart from the quick fingerprint sensor, the phone also has AI face recognition. This is decently quick under good light. There's even a raise-to-wake gesture, but it isn't reliable in very low-light, and it refused to work properly for us. That can be avoided as one do not use this feature often at night. Camera: In daylight, the PhoneX captured quite impressive images. Colors and details were good, although a bit of sharpness was lacking. There were also minor traces of chromatic aberration when shooting against bright backgrounds, and the HDR doesn't always handle the exposure of bright areas well.
Tumblr media
Video: We tested PhoneX for media files including videos and it performed well in our tests. Videos were sharp, colors were punchy, although red levels could have been better. The phone is also L1 certified, which means you'll be able to stream TV shows and movies at the highest supported resolution from OTT services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The inbuilt speakers gets fairly loud, while not breaking bass. Edit- After writing the article, we were informed that company has added a new ‘Night' shooting mode. This takes a second longer to process shots, but the end results were generally a bit brighter than using Auto mode.
Tumblr media
Our Recommendation
With a price of $199, the variant we have tested — seems like a no-nonsense. You get a good looking phone with a good display, excellent build quality, a decent set of cameras, day-long battery life and solid app performance. It provide support to Dual Sim and you can use micro SD card to increase storage space. Battery life is good, and we typically managed to average an entire day's worth of usage on a single charge with a little left over. In our HD video battery test, the PhoneX ran for 11 hours and 50 minutes, which is quite impressive. We recommend this phone if you are willing to get high value of your money on budget smartphone. While we can not expect iPhone features, but this phone is quite impressive for best smartphone under $200.
Tumblr media
I Couldn't Believe What I Was Experiencing
Tumblr media
The colorful display instantly turned on as the my fingerprint was scanned. I played around with the phone running latest Android, thinking why I had never heard of such an amazing device. I watched in awe as every application I started opened within a split-second after touching the screen. It was unbelievable. I quickly went into Settings just to discover the phone also has a whopping 32GB of memory... why didn't I have so much space on my last high-end device? But, I thought, there must be a catch.
How To Buy PhoneX
The PhoneX is available for a limited time only, with exclusive offers and free shipping. Ordering is quick and easy, so take advantage of the great price by ordering yours today.

Silence of the LANs
5G – the fifth generation of mobile communication – is revolutionizing military and security technology, which is partly why it has become a focal point in the United States’ efforts to contain China’s rise as a tech power and its allegations against Chinese companies.
The future landscape of warfare and cybersecurity could be fundamentally changed by 5G, but experts say 5G is more susceptible to hacking than previous networks, at a time of rising security concerns and US-China tensions on various interconnected fronts that include trade, influence in the Asia-Pacific region and technological rivalry.
These tensions provide the backdrop to controversy surrounding Huawei, the world’s largest telecoms equipment supplier. Long before the Chinese company was indicted in the US this week on multiple charges including stealing trade secrets and violating US sanctions – charges it denies – US intelligence voiced concerns that Huawei’s telecommunications equipment could contain “back doors” for Chinese espionage. US lawmakers seek to ban chip sales to China’s Huawei and ZTE for ‘violating American sanctions’
Huawei has repeatedly denied these allegations, but the controversies have underlined 5G’s growing importance and stepped up the technological arms race between China and the US.
To most people, the next-generation networks, which will be at least 20 times faster than the most advanced networks today, may just mean faster downloads of movies or smoother streaming. But they have much bigger potential than that. Whereas existing networks connect people to people, the next generation will connect a vast network of sensors, robots and autonomous vehicles through sophisticated artificial intelligence. The so-called internet of things will allow objects to “communicate” with each other by exchanging vast volumes of data in real time, and without human intervention.
Autonomous factories, long-distance surgery or robots preparing your breakfast – things that previously existed only in science fiction – will be made possible. China says it will fast-track 5G commercial licenses amid push back on Huawei’s overseas expansion.
With the ability to carry much more data, much lower network latency and energy consumption and much better stability than the previous generation of technologies, 5G is expected to transform digital communication. Using 5G, data can be transmitted at up to 10 gigabytes per second, much faster than using a 4G network, and the latency is reduced to under a millisecond, or 1 per cent that of 4G. Such features enhance connectivity in remote locations, connect sensors and robots, and will enable vehicles, traffic control, factories and construction to become more autonomous. In particular, 5G will enhance the connectivity of the internet of things .
Military equipment embedded with communication devices can also form the internet of things, he added. The communication can take place from device to device, without satellites or early-warning planes, saving those limited resources for other uses and significantly lowering the cost of a military operation, according to a 2017 report in China Defence News, a mouthpiece of China’s People’s Liberation Army.
China has been one of the powerhouses in research and development of 5G technologies. Its telecoms operators have said they will begin to introduce commercial 5G networks from 2020, although Zhou said this would involve only regional pilot schemes because 5G devices are still quite expensive for mass commercial use.  Last week, Huawei launched a chip that it claimed to be the world’s most powerful 5G modem. Then came the US Justice Department’s 13-count indictment on Monday against the Chinese company, its affiliates and its chief financial officer Sabrina Meng Wenzhou, following the arrest of Meng in Canada on December 1 at the US’ request.
But questions over the 5G technology made by Huawei and another Chinese firms date back further. In 2012, the US House Intelligence Committee released a report alleging Chinese telecoms equipment makers posed a threat to national security because of their relationship with the Chinese government. China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law asks Chinese companies to cooperate for national intelligence purposes when necessary.
The US has lobbied its allies to ban Huawei from building their next generation of mobile phone networks, and countries such as Britain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Canada have either banned Huawei or are reviewing whether to do so. Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei is a former PLA engineer, which has further fuelled questions in the West about Huawei’s ties to the Chinese army and government. But Huawei executives have asked repeatedly, in vain, for evidence of “back doors” in its equipment. BIS, the German internet security watchdog, inspected Huawei labs in Germany and found no evidence, and The New York Times last week quoted American officials as saying that the case against the company had “no smoking gun – just a heightened concern about the firm’s rising technological dominance”.
Moves by the US and its allies to block Huawei from 5G networks on national security grounds were last month described as a “concerted strategy” by Kevin Allison, of US-headquartered political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, talking to US broadcaster CNBC.A report last year to the White House by the US’ National Security Council called for action and strategy to “protect US technology leadership” and prevent China challenging US dominance in tech.
Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military commentator, said China has commissioned research institutions and state-owned companies, not Huawei, for its military 5G development.
Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei breaks years of silence amid continued US attacks on Chinese tech giant “For example, branches of the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, which makes military radars and other electronic systems, are focused in this area,” said Song.
The US, too, has been investing in military use of 5G, while prototype 5G networks for civilian use have been launched in some cities. In a recent interview with military technologies publication C4ISRNET, Brent Upson, a director at American aerospace and security company Lockheed Martin, predicted machine-to-machine communication, using information from several sources to form a unified picture of battlespaces, and AI-assisted decision-making would be among the trends in 2019.
US indictments against Huawei a step towards splitting the world’s telecoms industry in two
Todd Wieser, chief technology officer of the US Air Force’s Special Operations Command, has said 5G tech will enhance his forces’ mobile communications and geospatial functionality.
But commercial 5G networks are regarded by the US government as easy prey for foreign intelligence agents and hackers, and such concerns are heightened where a military network is subject to hacking and intrusion attempts by adversaries.
“The biggest disadvantage of a 5G network in the battlefield is the vulnerability to electromagnetic interference – and hacking and intrusion,” said Shu.
“The significant increase in sensors and data nodes means an increase of exposure, and an increased risk of being attacked.”
TASK IN HAND:
Component 1:
You are the assigned the role of a supreme Chinese official and you have to prepare a strategy to take over the world with this technology and how you do it is left to your discretion. The submission is in the form of a report of around 20 pages and a PPT of not more than 8 slides. Additional Deliverables are left to your discretion.

How long have you been using your current smartphone? The answer for an increasing number of consumers is years, plural. After all, why upgrade every year when next year’s model is almost exactly the same as the device you’re holding in your hand?
Dutch social enterprise Fairphone sees this as an opportunity to sell sustainability. A chance to turn a conversation about ‘stalled smartphone innovation’ on its head by encouraging consumers to think more critically about the costs involved in pumping out the next shiny thing. And sell them on the savings — individual and collective — of holding their staple gadget steady.
Its latest smartphone, the Fairphone 3 — just released this week in Europe — represents the startup’s best chance yet of shrinking the convenience gap between the next hotly anticipated touchscreen gizmo and a fairer proposition that requires an altogether cooler head to appreciate.
On the surface Fairphone 3 looks like a fairly standard, if slightly thick (1cm), Android smartphone. But that’s essentially the point. This 4G phone could be your smartphone, is the intended message.
Specs wise, you’re getting mostly middling, rather than stand out stuff. There’s a 5.7in full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (expandable via microSD), a 12MP rear lens and 8MP front-facing camera. There’s also NFC on board, a fingerprint reader, dual nano-SIM slots and a 3,000mAh battery that can be removed for easy replacement when it wears out.
There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack: The handy port that’s being erased at the premium smartphone tier,  killing off a bunch of wired accessories with it. So ‘slow replacement’ smartphone hardware demonstrably encourages less waste across the gadget ecosystem too.
But the real difference lies under the surface. Fairer here means supply chain innovation to source conflict-free minerals that go into making the devices; social incentive programs that top up the minimum wages of assembly workers who put the phones together; and repairable, modular handset design that’s intended to reduce environmental impact by supporting a longer lifespan. Repair, don’t replace is the mantra.
All the extra effort that goes into making a smartphone less ethically challenging to own is of course invisible to the naked eye. So the Fairphone 3 buyer largely has to take the company’s word on trust.
The only visual evidence is repairability. Flip the phone over and a semi-opaque plastic backing gives a glimpse of modular guts. A tiny screwdriver included in the box allows you take the phone to pieces so you can swap out individual modules (such as the display) in case they break or fail. Fairphone sells replacements via a spare parts section of its website.
Despite this radically modular and novel design vs today’s hermetically sealed premium mobiles the Fairphone 3 feels extremely solid to hold.
It’s not designed to pop apart easily. Indeed, there’s a full thirteen screws holding the display module in place. Deconstruction takes work (and care not to lose any of the teeny screws). So this is modularity purely as occasional utility, not flashy party trick — as with Google’s doomed Ara Project.
For some that might be disappointing. Exactly because this modular phone feels so, well, boringly normal.
Visually the most stand out feature at a glance is the Fairphone logo picked out in metallic white lettering on the back. Those taking a second look will also spot a moralizing memo printed on the battery so it’s legible through the matte plastic — which reads: “Change is in your hands”. It may be a bit cringeworthy but if you’ve paid for an ethical premium you might as well flaunt it.
It’s fair to say design fans won’t be going wild over the Fairphone 3. But it feels almost intentionally dull. As if — in addition to shrinking manufacturing costs — the point is to impress on buyers that ethical internals are more than enough of a hipster fashion statement.
It’s also true that most smartphones are now much the same, hardware, features and performance wise. So — at this higher mid-tier price-point (€450/~$500) — why not flip the consumer smartphone sales pitch on its head to make it about shrinking rather than maximizing impact, via a dull but worthy standard?
That then pushes people to ask how sustainable is an expensive but valueless — and so, philosophically speaking, pointless — premium? That’s the question Fairphone 3 seems designed to pose.
Or, to put it another way, if normal can be ethical then shouldn’t ethical electronics be the norm?
Normal is what you get elsewhere with Fairphone 3. Purely judged as a smartphone its performance isn’t anything to write home about. It checks all the usual boxes of messaging, photos, apps and Internet browsing. You can say it gets the job done.
Sure, it’s not buttery smooth at every screen and app transition. And it can feel a little slow on the uptake at times. Notably the camera, while fairly responsive, isn’t lightning quick. Photo quality is not terrible — but not amazing either.
Testing the camera I found images prone to high acutance and over saturated colors. The software also struggles to handle mixed light and shade — meaning you may get a darker and less balanced shot that you hoped for. Low light performance isn’t great either.
That said, in good light the Fairphone 3 can take a perfectly acceptable selfie. Which is what most people will expect to be able to use the phone for.
Fairphone has said it’s done a lot of work to improve the camera vs the predecessor model. And it has succeeded in bringing photo performance up to workable standard — which is a great achievement at what’s also a slightly reduced handset price-point. Though, naturally, there’s still a big gap in photo quality vs the premium end of the smartphone market.
On the OS front, the phone runs a vanilla implementation of Android 9 out of the box — preloaded with the usual bundle of Google services and no added clutter so Android fans should feel right at home. (For those who want a Google-free alternative Fairphone says a future update will allow users to do a wipe and clean install of Android Open Source Project.)
In short, purely as a smartphone, the Fairphone 3 offers very little to shout about — so no screaming lack either. Again, if the point is to shrink the size of the compromise Fairphone is asking consumers to make in order to buy an ethically superior brand of electronics they are slowly succeeding in closing the gap.
It’s a project that’s clearly benefiting from the maturity of the smartphone market. While, on the cellular front, the transformative claims being made for 5G are clearly many years out — so there’s no issue with asking buyers to stick with a 4G phone for years to come.
Given where the market has now marched to, a ‘fairer’ smartphone that offers benchmark basics at a perfectly acceptable median but with the promise of reduced costs over the longer term — individual, societal and environmental — does seem like a proposition that could expand from what has so far been an exceptional niche into something rather larger and more mainstream.
Zooming out for a second, the Fairphone certainly makes an interesting contrast with some of the expensive chimeras struggling to be unfolded at the top end of the smartphone market right now.
Foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Fold — which clocks in at around 4x the price of a Fairphone and offers ~2x the screen real estate (when unfolded), plus a power bump. Whether the Fold’s lux package translates into mobile utility squared is a whole other question, though.
And where foldables will need to demonstrate a compelling use-case that goes above and beyond the Swiss Army utility of a normal smartphone to justify such a whopping price bump, Fairphone need only prick the consumer conscience — as it asks you pay a bit more and settle for a little less.
Neither of these sales pitches is challenge free, of course. And, for now, both foldables and fairer electronics remain curious niches.
But with the Fairphone 3 demonstrating that ethical can feel so normal it doesn’t seem beyond the pale to imagine demand for electronics that are average in performance yet pack an ethical punch scaling up to challenge the mainstream parade of copycat gadgets.
