"'Well, thanks for everything, D. It’s been a real pleasure.' His voice dripped with sarcasm as he saluted, then resumed his earlier hasty departure.

‘Wait! Please!’ Damien called out one final time. He figured he probably sounded quite pathetic, but he couldn’t help it. There was just something about this Sebastian fellow. ‘Can we, uh, give you a ride?’ he asked, gesturing at Highwing, who huffed indignantly, sensing Fig’s wariness of the young man. 

‘Erm, I don’t think your hippogriff likes me very much.’

‘Highwing? Oh, no, don’t be silly. She’d be more than happy to—’ Highwing shoved him with her wing. ‘Ow!’

‘I’ll be alright,’ Sebastian said. ‘I’m a big, tough guy. A former Crossed Wands champion, in fact. And, I can tie my own tie and everything. Bye bye, Goldenboy.’ He swiveled around, and, finally, made a swift exit.”

Damien lay down on his side and sighed. “Thanks, Seb.” 

For the love of Merlin, Goldenboy was so pure and trusting—not in the naive, fragile way of someone who hadn’t seen darkness, but in the maddening, impossible way of someone who had faced it and still chosen to be good. 

Damien inched closer, then, without warning, launched himself at Sebastian, knocking him flat onto the blanket. “Did you hear me?” he said, grinning down at him. “I said thank you.” His tone was playful, flirtatious; there was no malice in it at all. 

Sebastian was so unused to this. It was as if he’d been struck by lightning. Mere seconds before, he had been sitting upright, mostly composed, and the next, Damien was on top of him, all warmth and long-limbed affection, the blanket crumpled beneath them.

Sebastian exhaled so loudly that he might as well have announced to the entire chamber, Yes, I am utterly and completely undone by this boy. 

But—no! He was not! … Right?

Instead of acknowledging Sebastian’s quip, Damien said, “Come on,” and grabbed Sebastian by the shoulders. Sebastian’s whole body lit up like someone hit him with a rogue Confringo that was a tad hot. Alright fine, a lot hot. Singed eyebrows levels of hot. 

Damien was touching his shoulders. Damien’s arms were snaking around his waist. Damien was lifting him up onto his hippogriff. Damien was settling himself behind Sebastian. 

Oh. 

Oh.  

Oh Merlin…

“No, uh, I… uh…” Sebastian stammered. What was he planning on saying? He wasn’t sure. All thoughts had fled his pretty little head.
