Episodic and Serial Writing at Full Sail University in the MFA program
The course, ESW, had us create a story within the framework of a webisode. This was my first attempt at such a script. Even though, I had written other scripts in different media. It was most closely aligned to a single-camera TV show. However, that’s where the similarity stopped.
A webisode, for those who don’t know, is a short film lasting anywhere from 3 minutes up to 15 minutes. There’s usually a pilot, which we wrote for this class. Then there are subsequent episodes, much like a TV show, which we weren’t tasked to do in the program. Also, seasons that could include many episodes. We had assignments to build a show bible and a beat sheet, among other things. It would be something that could be presented to a webisode producer looking for something to film.
I knew most of this building a webisode, except for the knowledge of crafting an actual webisodic script. To begin, we had to create a compelling and dramatic, or comedic, story. Of course, characters and conflict were also a huge factor in the story. Finally, how the story progressed. We used a three-act structure with a maximum page count limit of 3 pages per act. We could add a one-page Teaser, or Cold Opening, along with a one-page Tag. All in all, it could be 11 pages long. In the screenwriting world, a page usually equates to a minute of screen time. So, no more than eleven minutes long for the pilot.
The story that I fashioned seemed to be well received. The feedback was, for the most part, very positive and not much was needed for a rewrite. That in itself was very uplifting and encouraging. I had fun writing the story and it flowed really well for being a very fast-pace, thrilling, dramatic, and comedic adventure into the world of the protagonist. It also had an over-arching theme or use of the horror genre.
I actually classified it as a comedy-horror story. It used comedic elements throughout with a setup and punchline delivery. It was based on the character so it could be anything from a dumb joke to a sight gag to actual comedy. The horror came for the characters themselves and the world they lived in. The story took place in a special curio shop and the protagonist was the owner and also a werewolf. His best friend was Dr. Jekyll. The antagonist was none other than Abraham Van Helsing. His love interest, Epiphany, was the daughter of Count Dracula. He objected to their relationship. Instant conflict from multiple storylines and characters.
This was a great learning experience and I can see myself being a webisode writer. It isn’t much different than what I’ve already done as a writer and I could do this for a living. It would lend itself to becoming a filmmaker, producer, and director. I could picture myself doing a successful GoFundMe campaign.

50 Top B2B Marketing Influencers, Experts and Speakers in 2019
In a world saturated with marketing strategies, tactics and technology, much of what makes B2B marketing successful is understanding the realm of what's possible. Lucky for us, MarketingProfs B2B Forum in Washington D.C. October 16-18, 2019 offers an infotaining mix of possibilities from some of the top experts in the B2B marketing industry. But who are these experts? To help B2B marketing professionals connect with experts and influential speakers at this year's #MPB2B event, we've sorted through the master list of presenters to identify 50 of the top B2B marketing social influencers. List Methodology: Our starting point is to identify and validate credentials of all speakers from the MarketingProfs B2B Forum website. Then we imported the scrubbed info into the influencer marketing platform Traackr. Using Traackr’s algorithm for ranking, we sorted the speakers according to their respective B2B marketing social influence using reach, relevance, resonance, and audience metrics. A variety of criteria go into such a ranking including:
Topical relevance of the content each influencer publishes
Network engagement with on-topic content
Network size and reach
Online data for this ranking is pulled from Twitter, blogs, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, SlideShare, and several other platforms. This is important to know, because many lists rely entirely on Twitter and we all know Twitter alone does not represent the entire social media universe! Many thanks to these generous providers of B2B marketing best practices, tips and advice. After having worked in B2B marketing with our agency for nearly 20 years, it is clear that today's B2B world is more competitive than ever. Plus, with brand trust at risk, connecting with respected industry experts can provide a goldmine of insight, direction and validation for your marketing into 2020 and beyond. In this list for 2019 you will see familiar faces and a mix of new B2B marketing influencers as well. What you will not see in this year's list is my name, as I ranked quite high and decided to take myself out to remove any perceived conflict of interest. If you're curious what I share about B2B I can be found on Twitter @leeodden and LinkedIn. If you would like to follow all 50 B2B marketers in one shot, I made you a Twitter list. Enjoy! Content Marketing Explained
Content marketing is one of the most popular marketing topics of 2013 and rightfully so; it’s considered the “bread and butter” of communicating with current and potential customers - it’s how businesses can competitively gain exposure. Scott Donation recently wrote an article in Fast Company about the importance for brands to be thinking about their own content marketing strategies and why it matters.
The ideas go back to the human love for a good STORY. And it does make sense. I agree with his rationale - they are “shareable and shapeable, constantly changing based on those they touch and those who touch them. They carve the quickest path to the heart and the mind…” If your messaging isn’t relevant or doesn’t add value to people’s lives, then the efforts and marketing dollars are wasted.
From the business perspective, really great content can change brand perception, increase awareness, creates a desire to buy and garner brand loyalty.
In the digi-world we live and breath, it becomes even more important to focus on strategic digital strategies that can help to amplify communication in meaningful ways. Kristina Halvorson and Melissa Rach wrote a great book called Content Strategy for the Web which was delightfully witty and very helpful for this area.
Not sure where to start? Start simple.
Blogs on your own sight are a great way to attract customers and begin the story. Shawn Graham wrote a great blog post about using your own blog on your ecommerce site to share great content and start conversations. He keeps it simple.
Below is a summary of some good tips for creating powerful content for brands.
Top 5 Content TIps
1. Know your WHY - what value do you add?
Ask yourself what your product or brand’s role is in people’s lives? What are your brand values? Why do you exist as a business? People are emotional and intuitive and identify with brands that align with their own values. Some brands that know their WHY are Honest Tea and Clif Bar. I happen to also love Simon Sinek’s book called Start with Why. If you don’t have time to read, watch the video here.
2. Data - driven insights help keep you stay connected and relevant I wrote a post earlier on the importance of data. Deriving insights has alot of power and ensures that you understand your own business endeavors and that you are relevant and connected to your customers. Understanding your customer and business data helps to discover new products, messaging and innovations that can create a sustainable competitive advantage. This also includes having a real approach that is linked to your KPI’s.
3. Talking about yourself all the time is boooorrrrrrinngg
Content should provide utility, information, education or be entertaining. But how do you create great content? Well, for starters, start listening to what your audiences need and want to talk about. Social listening tools and surveys are a great start.
4. Give people a reason to SHARE their stories about your brand
People don’t want campaigns, they want good experiences and value. Really good experiences really do make a differences - they come back to you and more importantly they share THEIR STORY about your brand with other people. Brands are very powerful and people who love you and have a reason to share their experiences, definitely will. I think loyalty has taken on a different meaning today than it did 10 or 20 years ago but there is nothing like having great consistent customer experience and one that can be amplified on social channels and in conversations.
5. Know where and when it makes sense to tell your story
If you don’t have the right communication channels and timing, it doesn’t matter what story you have to tell because nobody will see it. This is a tough one because there are so many variables at play when communicating to people, a very complex mix of art and science for sure. This is where testing comes into play. Test, test and re-test to ensure you understand, reformulate and optimize your approach.
I recently wrote a blog for Search Decoder that explains content marketing and how to maximize this for businesses. Check it out and other articles here: http://www.searchdecoder.com/small-business-seo-tips/#ixzz2jmYz15Do
