Wild and Callouses

All the heroes had hardened callouses across their hands. Continuous use of a sword over years of adventures will do that to a person.

Each hero dealt with the painful experience in a different way. Some dealt with them as they came, some had creams and some... Just ignored them

Wild was one of those heroes.

He was preparing dinner, the steady chopping of the knife into the board as he chopped a carrot. His hand was playing up today so he had to place it down every so often.

"Wild, that can't be comfortable." The champion raised his head from his chopping board to see the captain stood in front of him. He looked down in concern.

"what chopping carrots?"

"No, your hands. Those look painful, I've got something that can help." The captain reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pot of cream. "give me your hand." He offered out his own for Wild to lay his into.

"What is that?"

"It's cream, which helps soften your hands, I make it on the road with specific herbs and some water to make a paste. Helps on the tough days when my hands are soaked in pain."

"I always thought that was burn cream."

"It softens hardened skin. Might make it a little more comfortable to hold a knife or a sword." He took a small bit of the cream and put it into his own hands to demonstrate. "If I make it I know it's safe."

"What's in it?"

"Water, and a few healing herbs. A soldier during the war, a good friend of mine told me about it." The captain chuckled. "It was From his home deep in the forest. It's what they used."

"Sounds like quite the friend. Does he live in your time somewhere? I'd love to talk plants with him." wild inspected the pot before taking a small amount of cream and massaging it into his hands.

"you could say that." The captain's gaze turned to the side. Where Time and Four were sitting on a log discussing something.

"Thanks, captain." Wild smiled, "But I should be getting back to these. You'll have to tell me about your friend later."

"No problem." the captain smiled before placing the pot of cream on the log next to Wilds work station. "Keep that, I can make more." He turned before Wild could comment and walked away into the camp.

Nice! That's the one I rediscovered last night and started working on it again! It is just a classic Wild whump oneshot where he gets stuck when it starts raining while climbing and ends up getting hypothermia.

Wild kicked himself. He shouldn’t have tried to climb the cliff when it looked like the weather might turn. Should have just camped out at the bottom of the cliff until the storm passed or until the rest of the Chain found him. If he’d paraglided down as soon as it started raining, he would have been fine. But nooo he didn’t want to lose the progress he’d made and hoped that the storm was just a little squall that would leave as quick as it arrived, but alas, it looked as though it might rain all night. Now it was too late; his hands were too numb to reliably hold onto the bars of the paraglider. From how high up he was, if he tried to glide and fell, he had a fifty percent chance of dying. No amount of opening and closing or stuffing them in his armpits had them helped to thaw them. He’d had heard the saying that you can walk a hundred miles on frozen feet, but you can die in a day with frozen hands. And with the sun beginning to set and the air rapidly cooling, Wild was more than a little worried.

1. Penguins 🐧 (I just watched a documentary on Penguins and it was filled with baby empire Penguins!)
