Lilith in Leo

Lilith, the Black Moon, a mysterious moving mathematical point, has a primal potency that spreads its roots and feelers beneath the surface of things, erupting upwards sometimes in a rustle of dark leaves or a flare of gunfire.

We each hold this potential — more or less — in ourselves. It shows somewhere in your birth chart and mine. Those with Lilith Rising or on the midheaven cannot help but embody her more obviously to the rest of us, naturally, but there are other ways and places that the Black Moon makes herself felt.

(For astrologers: I use “mean” Lilith but may note the space between mean and true.)

Lilith moves with the same clockwork timing as the two Lights — strictly forward, with no retrogrades. Lilith takes about nine years to move through the zodiac, nine months to move through a sign, and about nine days to move through a degree — a satisfying number of near completion for numerologists, a period of gestation.

According to legend, she was the first wife of Adam, banished to the outer wastes for having the temerity to want to satisfy her own desire. It’s said that she wanted to straddle the first man during intercourse, and when he refused she left him. In the wastelands of the Red Sea, or thereabouts, she lived as a demon, kidnapping babies — and doing whatever she liked one supposes. Which is actually not true but the church tried to diminish her . She was denied giving birth after leaving the garden of Eden as punishment for disobeying Adam as both were created equal and she refused to be degraded under him. That is why she also used as a symbol for feminism movement.

Astrologically, her significance is still the subject of some debate or dispute. She has been used by European astrologers since the 1920s — especially in France and Germany — but the English-speaking world is catching up. Like everything in astrology — planets, signs, angles, points, fixed stars — Lilith has both positive and negative effects.

From my experience, Lilith relates to: love-triangles and infidelity, being the other man or woman, sexual allure and attraction; both feminism and misogyny; abortion, miscarriages, infertility; adoption and lost children; outsiders, wildness, taboo-breaking, rule-breaking, sheer outright craziness; wild beauty, wilderness itself and being cast into the wilderness; both inability to love and fierce desire; aloneness; witchcraft and magic; natural power; abuse and retribution. There is more, but suffice to say, I never disregard Lilith when looking at a chart.

Here is an example of Lilith in action. This is Carlos Santana’s chart. He made the song Black Magic Woman famous. Lilith is in the 9th house of broadcasting, opposite his Mercury (words) in Cancer, and she is the only thing above the horizon. Without that beautiful, wild Lilith energy in performance would there be Santana?

What of Lilith in Leo?

Leo is a sign associated with childhood and its delights. I have observed though, that people with Lilith in Leo, especially when Pluto is involved, may have actually survived some form of sexual abuse or in some other way had their childhood stolen. A couple of famous examples are Marilyn Monroe and Rihanna, both of whom had pretty traumatic childhoods but then turned that Lilith in Leo into scorching charisma, another attribute of Leo. Monroe’s Lilith is in her first house, making a conjunction with Neptune, the planet of the silver screen. Where Lilith works, we can have astonishing allure. Leo is also a sign of kings and queens: Elizabeth II, JFK, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama all have Lilith in Leo. And arguably, they — along with Rihanna in particular — show a kind of unboxed regality.

So what do we make of Lilith as she travels through the Zodiac? How do her transits work? 2022 year’s transit through the sign of mothers and the USA, Cancer, certainly chimed with the overturning of long-standing abortion rights and the subsequent public pushback in the US. But this year, we’ll be seeing Lilith in the sign of high drama — also hair: it’s a Leo thing! The women of Iran have already demonstrated the power of hair, but they were cutting it. What if we all grow giant manes?

Leo is also a highly creative sign. Paula Rego, who painted a series on abortion, had Lilith in Leo, and so did Virginia Woolf (opposite her Mercury and sextile her Mars in Gemini), who broke all the rules about what a novel actually is, and, of course, wrote A Room of One’s Own, on the Lilith theme of aloneness and the creative process. So we may expect art around Lilith subjects — female power and disempowerment, outsiders, unbridled desire, black magic women….

#finishedbooks The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck. Picked this up from the free bookstore in Baltimore. I am quite a big fan of his with "East of Eden" being my favorite, so was happy to find a novella that I hadn't read by him for free. This was his propaganda work for the war effort circulated for those under Nazi occupation written right after Pearl Harbor. It was highly criticized at the time for not being aggressive enough, which for a thinking writer like Steinbeck to write such easy propaganda... just wouldn't be possible. The American audience didn't quite get it and as a result it ended up having a huge impact as it was bootlegged throughout Europe with its biggest following in the Scandinavian countries where the locale of the story was loosely upon. Although never actually living under the occupation his work really struck a chord...a result of the interviews he had with people who fled the occupation as the work was for them anyway. Recall in another free book I got from the same place last decade in Sartre's "What is Literature?", he used this novel as an example in his contention that we can have no true understanding of a literary work unless we know who an author is writing for. Also comparative was the famous Vercors resistance novel that circulated through France in "The Silence of the Sea" where the people resisted through silence. There was a pre-French new wave Jean-Pierre Melville film adaptation that was really good as well. All in all a solid read that like a lot of his lesser novels gets its name from Shakespeare. In Macbeth right before Duncan is murdered the two guards mention to each other, "How goes the night, boy?" To which the other replies, " The Moon is down; I have not heard the clock" foreshadowing the descent of evil on to the kingdom. The allusion relates to the spiritual darkness Nazism brought about.

Thoughts on Hemmingway? I am so ignorant of literature, that I kinda have to take people like Logo Daedalus for their word when he says that he is basically a hacky Bukowski writter. Still I read "The Man and the Sea" and thought it was alright, but still, I'm not sure if it's just do to my more than limited knowledge and experience with real literature or if Logo's takes on literature are also "flawed" (like I dont take him serious in shit like tv shows, like he was praising that shitty "The chosen" show till it had some neocon austerity propoganda in it, ignoring how cynically "soulles" and cheap it was from the start ((also trying to say the live action One Piece isnt totall garbage which should be obvious to everybody, but thats just my own pet peeve lol))

Judgments of Hemingway have been so wrapped up in political signaling and counter-signaling since at least the advent of second-wave feminism that it's hard to know what to say—and in a different sort of signaling and counter-signaling, this time aesthetic, about the merits of minimalism vs. maximalism in narrative prose.

Politically, Hemingway was still the paragon of male chauvinism when I was educated, whereas he has now re-appeared, thanks largely to Ken Burns's (very good) PBS documentary, as the disabled trans heroine we've been waiting for. I tend to look on those kinds of shifts with amusement, since they are essentially academic squabbles, but I am glad we've caught up to his posthumous queer novel, The Garden of Eden, which I read this year and found excellent despite its supposedly being unfinished. (I think it is finished; he just knew he couldn't publish it in the '50s.) It's obviously a book written at white heat; it feels like it might combust in your hand.

The quality of that novel aside, and of The Sun Also Rises, I tend to believe he's best approached as a poet: a writer who explored his unique sensibility in his particular epoch in a brand-new style, a style that transformed not only his own language but several other languages as well (he was and remains beloved in France, Russia, China...). He is a lyric writer, fundamentally, and had a lyric writer's effect: on the very way we speak and write. His American renovation of English, his new democratization of literature, makes him a 20th-century Walt Whitman. He was also, though he didn't flaunt it, a very learned man who knew exactly what he was doing. He didn't write simply because he was stupid!

On the other hand, he's bound to look inadequate next to a preternaturally gifted true novelist like Faulkner, who was rather an American Shakespeare. Faulkner's own critique of Hemingway—here comes the minimalism vs. maximalism debate—was that he did not show courage as a writer, that, in other words, his famously rigorous style was too controlled and even too populist to touch greatness. I probably agree with this, less as a critique of Hemingway at his best than as a critique of the idea of making him the model writer whom everyone had to imitate, which is what he became in the middle of the 20th century and in some creative-writing pedagogy.

(Minimalism and maximalism should be thought of as techniques always available to any writer, to be used depending on the needs of a particular project. Even my own work exhibits both extremes, with The Quarantine of St. Sebastian House and The Class of 2000 more toward the Hemingway end of the spectrum and Portraits and Ashes and Major Arcana more toward the Faulkner. The power of the great late-20th-century American novelists—McCarthy, Morrison, DeLillo—is that they could do both, often in a single book.)

Speaking personally, I fell in love with Hemingway when I discovered him as a teen. I always had a tendency to write purple prose, so I needed to learn that minimalist lesson, and I found him at just the right time for it. Before I read him, I never knew you could do so much with so little. I could see even then that he was uneven, that The Old Man and the Sea was labored and portentous and A Farewell to Arms beautifully written but not much of a novel, compared to the perfect crystalline crispness of short stories like "Soldier's Home" or "In Another Country" or even the taut, dramatic The Sun Also Rises.

(I've never read For Whom the Bell Tolls, I should admit; you probably need to read that one to form a complete judgment.)

In short, I like Hemingway, I even love Hemingway. I would not put him in the front rank of the novelists, but I would put him in the front rank of artists who work in language, if you get my distinction. If you want to know where to start with Hemingway, I would get either a selection of short stories or The Sun Also Rises, not The Old Man and the Sea.

"She Looks Just Like a Piece of Cake": A Sugar Coated Reflection on Marie Antionette (2006)

Lushly rich and complicated, like bite into a dark chocolate covered, maraschino cherry. Visually that is the experience of taking a bite into Sophia Coppola's Marie Antionette (2006). From the endless montages of champaign overflowing from little glasses, to flower gilded porcelain filled with every powered sugary treat you can image; every second in this sumptuous piece oozes excess. It relishes in it it, celebrates it even. Kristen Dunst stars as a seventeen- then middle aged Marie Antionette as she is thrust from her life as a duchess of Austria into the silently crumbling world of the France bureaucracy. Her manner is sweet, coquettish and dare I say even a little ditzy, as she brazenly defies tradition by gambling, riding, dallying and hosting loud boisterous parties late into the night. My favorite scene especially has to be when a seemingly oblivious Marie encourages everyone at the opera to clap, boldly ignoring the conduct of polite society.

I have always had a complex relationship with Marie Antionette and her subsequent glamorization as both a person of history and popular culture. On the one hand I can acknowledge her as an unfortunate victim of violent misogyny. Her legacy has been poised as the catty, selfish, and idiotic queen who when asked to spare compassion for her people, mocked them with the all too famous "Let them eat Cake!". A quote which is still highly associated with her today, despite her never actually having said that. Furthermore it is known that historically speaking, women (even those in her position) would simply not have have the power to enact the large economic repair that France was desperately seeking. She, much like many of those executed in the French Revolution, was a convenient scapegoat. A constant, unpleasant reminder gnawing in the empty stomach's of the many without.

Yet even still knowing all that I know, I don't like the more modern day interpretation of her having been an absolute blameless victim. A poor child bride; uneducated, illiterate and too sheltered to understand the implications of any her actions. In many of the online discourse I see about it, is often on the emphasis on how young she was when she married (an entirely separate tragedy) and died. So much emphasis is put on her youth that you would think she had been a teenage girl when she was killed, rather than being well into her thirties. It is true Marie Antionette did not break the economy of France, nor did she mock the poor; however she did actively benefit and joyfully participate in an imperialistic system that fed off the bones of the peasantry. Before her execution she was spending extravagantly and excessively even as the divide between classes grew wider. As did King Louis IV, as did the entire royal court.

So even though they were not the sole cause, they were complicit and far from being blameless. Which is as point that I see so often left out, especially in the framing of this film. So much of the filthy, rotten, bleeding underbelly of 17th century France is swept away in a sea of swirling pastel ribbon and gold embroidered bed sheets. Marie Antoinette and her lords and ladies at court gorge themselves endlessly and drink without inhibition, a placid smile woven on their face in nearly every scene. How could anything go hungry, here in this fertile Eden?

When confronted with the slanderous papers, charging her with the condemning quote, her response is outrage at her slander rather than her people's pain and suffering. She sighs, "don't they ever grow tire it?". That sentiment to me is even more egregious than the cake.

To me the endless forgiveness constantly bestowed on Marie Antionette is a prime example of white feminism and victimhood. To quote JM's article for Medium The Glorification of Imperialism in Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006), "On the surface, this seems to be a quintessential feminist exploration of a misunderstood historical figure, but once we begin to discover the lack of diverse perspectives in this deeply influential re-telling of Antoinette’s legacy, we see a deeply problematic issue at the very core of the film, ie, the glorification of the imperial culture and an attempt to garner sympathy for the exploitative state that led to the decay of the French masses. The film focuses on Antionette’s personal journey as a woman but fails to take into account one simple fact, at the end of the day, Marie Antoinette was an instrument of the state, she was the face of the crown, the name which was used to pass undemocratic and unjust laws, the reason behind the bankruptcy of the entire nation." To reduce Marie Antionette to this vapid, infantilized little girl, is to reduce her very real complexity as a whole. And make no mistake her complexity does include the tangible harm she willingly caused. She was not a doe eyed cottage-core waif, dancing in a field of strawberries. She was not a virginal child bride nor was she a feminist patron of female power and sexuality.

So please, can we stop sugar coating who she really was? Because there's really nothing sweet about it.

#1253 How did the Suez Crisis mark the end of British power?

How did the Suez Crisis mark the end of British power? Britain was forced to withdraw and, for the first time, realized that it could no long act unilaterally. It was a humiliating defeat for Britain and is sometimes said to be the actual end of the British Empire. The Suez Canal was opened in 1869 and it was a way of passing through the land that connects Africa to the Middle East, connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. It meant that ships didn’t need to sail right round Africa to reach India and it saved an enormous amount of time. The canal was built by a French company and the Ottoman Empire, which controlled Egypt at the time. The canal was run by the Suez Company, which was an Egyptian company, but in 1875 Egypt had a huge financial crisis and had to sell a large portion of the shares in that country. Britain stepped in to by them and instantly controlled 44% of the company. Britain was increasing its influence in the Middle East and Northern Africa at the time and in 1882, Britain invaded and occupied Egypt, taking complete control of the canal as well. Britain continued to hold the area through the First World War, the Second World War, and on into the 1950s. After World War Two, Britain needed to borrow enormous amounts of money from America to rebuild and to shore up their economy. One of the conditions for this money was that Britain slowly released all of her colonies. In the 1940s, India, Burma, Ghana, and Malaya gained their independence. However, Britain continued to have a large military presence in many old colonies and protectorates, including Egypt. The world was obviously changing and the people born after World War Two had a completely different way of thinking, but many of the people in government in Britain at the time had been around from before the war and still saw Britain as an empire. This old fashioned way of thinking would bring about the crisis. In 1952, Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew the Egyptian government and took power. He demanded that the British remove all of their troops from Egypt within 20 months. That doesn’t seem like an unreasonable demand. In 1956, British troops started to pull out and Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal Company, taking control of the canal. Britain, with support from France, decided to take it back. They made a top secret deal with Israel to invade Egypt. Then, they would invade Egypt under the pretense of trying to stop Israel. This would let them take back control of the canal. Anthony Eden was the UK prime minister and he still believed in the empire. He thought that it was Britain’s right to take back the canal. They also thought that a rebellion in Egypt might spark ideas of rebellion in other colonies. They also didn’t want to risk access to the colonies being cut off. Israel invaded, as planned, and Britain and France invaded as well. They destroyed the Egyptian airforce, but then they were forced to stop by an order from the United Nations. This order basically came from the USA. President Eisenhower had strongly warned the British not to invade Egypt. At the time, the Soviet Union was spreading and the USA was worried that a British attack on Egypt would drive the Arab countries into the arms of the Soviets. The USSR actually threatened to go to war on the side of Egypt. Eisenhower thought that this could be the beginning of World War Three. The USA led United Nations threatened Britain with sanctions. This caused a panic in British financial markets and millions of pounds were wiped out of the country’s reserves overnight. The pound rapidly started to lose its value. Britain approached the International Monetary Fund to get financial assistance, but the US controlled the IMF and assistance was denied. The US also threatened to dump its stocks of British pounds on the market, which would crash the pound and destroy the British economy. Britain had no choice but to end the war. This marked the end of British power because it became obvious for the very first time that Britain could not launch a unilateral war on any other country anymore. The days of empire were gone. If the USA wanted Britain to stop fighting, then they had no choice. It became obvious that Britain was no longer one of the superpowers and was a second tier country. The two superpowers of the USA and the USSR were the only countries that could go it alone. Britain was humiliated internationally. Ironically, Britain invading Egypt to protect its colonies may have had the exact opposite effect because the colonies could now see that Britain had no power and most of them gained independence in the next few years. Ruto and many of the leaders repeated the major goals of conference organizers to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency. Those goals aren’t controversial, but what to do about fossil fuels is.

This is not to attempt to say that there is no use for coal, only that the world’s most populous nation is increasing its use.

Higher heat is prophesied to come:

Since scripture points to higher heat coming, the Bible shows that COP28 will not be able to possibly stop that.

Physical survival is at risk as Jesus prophesied “unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved” (Mark 13:20).

The Bible also shows that the globalists will not fix the planet. The Bible shows that Jesus will have to destroy some of the world’s end time leaders as they will have been actually destroying the earth:

Leaving the true God out of the picture, which is what nearly all the most vocal ‘climate change activists’ do, will not lead to a real solution. Hence, Bill Gates, who supports the godless, globalist approach, is wrong in his optimism.

Here is how the climate could be fixed:

Yes, there is a biblical solution to climate change, but world leaders have overlooked that.

The Bible does reveal that there is a solution to pollution and ‘climate change.’

Disobedience to God is the cause of it and obeying and turning to the true God is the solution.

While we do not want to promote pollution, temperature records are going to be broken and new ones set.

The solution is to turn to God and seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness as Jesus said (cf. Matthew 6:33).

The Bogomils and other religious movements in Medieval Bulgaria Undoubtedly, the dynasty of the Assenids (1186-1280) prompted the power and the prestige of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in the European Medieval world. But, of course, its history also knew periods of social and political crises. The incessant growth of private property and the deeper stratifi-cation of the population in the rural commune contributed to the sharpening of the relations between the ranks of the people and the upper strata of the Bulgarian society Tours Bulgaria. In such periods emerged and developed certain social and religious movements. The Bogomil movement distinguished not only by the dualistic religious beliefs – a conception of the two principles: good and evil – but also by political nationalism and resentment of Byzantine culture. Observing the mismatch between words and deeds of the clergy, people started gradually losing faith in the Christian religion. The Bogomils renounced the official church, its symbols and rites, as well as the need for its ministers. They preached rejection of luxury, riches and bodily pleasures; repudiated marriage; renounced violence, war and cruelty.

Between the 9th and the 12th century the Bogomil movement penetrated into Byzantium, Serbia, Wallachia, Kievan Russia, and in the centuries that followed it spread to Italy and France. In the Western world the followers of the Bogomil teaching were called Cathars and Albigenses. Later, in the 14th cen-tury also appeared the teaching of the Adamites who claimed that social inequality was not of a divine origin, so they called on people not to wear clothes: like Adam, the first man in Eden. Again in the 14th century under the influence of Byzantium among the Bulgarian monks penetrated Hesychasm [from the Greek hesychazo, e. g. “being silent”] – an ascetic and meditative teaching. Also from Byzantium came the philosophical and religious doctrine of Varlaam and Akindin called Varlaamism which contained many rational elements combined with criticism of the sumptuous and costly church rituals. And, on the eve of Bulgaria’s fall under Turkish subjugation, the heresy of the Jews was quite widespread as well.
