Batfishes are often seen at our dive and snorkel sites. Relaxed and slow swimming, they form very elegant formations while schooling. There are 5 different species and they mainly feed on plankton Not 100% sure, but we think that the big school in our last picture is the Platax Teira or Longfin Batfish. Special about them all is also the total different look from juvenile to adult. A big family of 30 species and relatively easy to identify. In the picture is Amphiprion Ocellaris or False clown fish. For us, outsiders, they all seem one big happy family living in symbioses with the anemone. In reality is the social structure quite complex. Their place on the ladder mainly depends on aggression. But it doesn't change the fact that it is always lovely to observe them. Nudibranches are always a treat underwater. Their amazing bright colours and shapes make them standout as pearls in a desert. The Peacock Mantis shrimp (Odondotactylus scyllarus) is one of the approximately 450 species of Mantis shrimps in the world. We see it quit often in the house reef and dive site nearby the resort. Up to 18 cm and very colorful it is always a great find. Mantis shrimps can be roughly divided in two kinds; the smashers and the spearers. The first one catch prey by simply smashing it with their claw. It is powerful enough to break the glass from your dive mask. The spearers have a spiny device and stab their prey. Another special of mantis is their eyes. They have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom. We humans, for example, have 3 so called 'photo-receptor cells' in our eyes. Mantis have 16. It is so complex that it is not well understood what exactly it is for. Sea urchins are often either loved or hated by divers and snorkelers. Hated of course, for their sharp spines that sometimes can even contain some venom. But we love them. They are fascinating animals often beautiful coloured. And if you got stung, you can be sure of one thing. The urchin did not come to you! In the picture is a Radiant sea urchin (Astropyga radiata). This one has indeed some venom in its spines. But on the other hand, the bright and radiant colours makes them very easy to spot. They often have some 'partners on board like Zebra crabs or Commensal shrimps and sometimes even juvenile Lion fishes. Undeniable, is the Mandarin-fish or Mandarin Dragonet, (Synchiropus splendidus), one of the most beautiful fishes in the world. Whereas many other marines species try protect themselves by camouflage, the Mandarin-fish seems to do the opposite. With the strikingly, bright colours it seems difficult to hide. Still is it a smart strategy to stay alive from predators. In this case the vibrant colours send out the message: 'Don't eat me. I am poisonous!' This is somewhat true but it is more that they taste real bad. There is a believe among divers that Mandarin-fish can only be seen around dusk. That is not true. They are active on the day like many other fish. They only thing they wait, for the sun to set, is mating. They make quite a show of that and it is always one of the high lights of a dive holiday, to be able to observe that. For many years we had Mandarin-fish in our house reef. Then suddenly, they were gone for about 2 years. But last week, we spotted them again.
