@mortimerlatrice got me thinking about a KimChay Chrestomanci AU, so more of that.

the Chrestomanci series, sidenote, is an absolutely delightful fantasy series by Diana Wynne Jones. it's composed of mostly independent stories set in a universe of 12 parallel universes (called Series), each with their own string of worlds (except Series 11). generally speaking, every person has eight identical copies borne into other series than their own, but very occasionally all nine lives will be borne into one person. this nine-life enchanter has all the power of nine magical people in them and is therefore the only person powerful enough to fill the role of Chrestomanci to regulate magical use and prevent any abuse of it across the 12 series.

which cool, very fun story premise actually, but not what I care about here. I'm setting kp in one of the series that doesn't deal much with magic because I don't care about magic meet mafia, I care about Chay having nine lives and all the ways that could make things worse.

(cw: non-permanent but slightly graphic character death under the cut. ft a dash of actual character death, but that only applies to Tawan.)

Chay doesn't have all his lives when canon starts. he lost his first one the same day he and Porsche lost their parents when he fell out of his crib trying to investigate the noise. he lost his second to food poisoning, before Porsche started working for extra food money and they had to make every scrap stretch. he lost another when a debt collector hit him too hard and snapped his neck. (Porsche wasn't home for that day. Chay told him he wasn't either.)

Chay loses his fourth life in the warehouse. it actually wasn't intentional on anyone's part -- Tawan's hired meat weren't careful enough bringing him in, and Chay's luck has his head hit a curb or scrap metal at just the right (or wrong, as it were) angle to kill him instead of concuss him, and head injuries take so long to come back from. Tawan drags out the charade because he wants Porsche desperate, not angry, and Porsche is in too deep of denial to accept the possibility of Chay actually being dead not to fall for it.

Kim arrives before Chay comes back to life. it's...bad. Porsche is screaming for him to get Chay out. Kim first checks Chay's breathing. failing to find that, he frantically (but carefully!) hauls Chay upright. that's when Chay's head flops limply to the side and reveals the dried blood down the back of his neck, which Kim had already felt grabbing but refused to process.

Kim sees red.

Tawan knifes Big. Porsche's shouts break through the fog threatening to overwhelm Kim. then Tawan gets one very distraught, very angry, very murderous Kim materializing in front of him and going right for his eyes. it doesn't matter that Tawan's the one with a weapon, he could've had an armory and that couldn't have helped him. Kim is very, very, very good at fighting, and he's on a mission to hurt. but he's also missing his control, and kicks Tawan in the kidney so hard Tawan stumbles back into a pile of scrap and, in true irony, jostles it hard enough the end of steel beam falls on his head. as discovered earlier, metal and concrete are not kind to heads, and bullet proof vests certainly can't protect from that.

it's too quick and too kind, and Kim stares at him disbelievingly, half a mind to drag Tawan out and beat out the little life he's surely still clinging to, when Chay groans. Kim first thinks he hallucinated it, but then he sees Chay move and he's so relieved he was wrong that he shoves everything else out of his mind and just gets Chay out. then everything and one trailing shouty Porsche slams back into him the minute Chay's out of his arms and with the paramedics that Kim bolts to go hide in a dark corner in his apartment and fail to process any of it.

Chay misses all of this btws. He was dead, then he was back with a headache, and he loves Porsche but he needs Porsche to please shut the fuck up and get him some tylenol.

then apartment confrontation, where Kim says I'm sorry and shoves off even quicker because all he can remember are those moments when he'd been so sure Chay was properly dead. club scene goes down even worse when Kim yells at Chay for making stupid reckless choices that could get him killed, and Chay demands to know why Kim even cares, and Kim goes pale with anger that Chay doesn't care that he (only nearly, surely) died, and it's all very terrible and ends in them storming away from each other.

then comes Yok's bar.

Chay dies. Kim had taunted them into a direct fight inside instead of picking them off outside, and it should have been fine, would have been fine, had Chay not had a bit more awareness and looked over to see Kim pinned between two guys and rushed to help only to get shot by one of the goons on the other end of the bar. he bleeds out while Kim kills off the rest.

Chay comes back to a bar full of bodies and Kim (clutching) cradling him. Kim isn't crying. he isn't really doing much of anything other than clinging and staring off into nothing with a thoroughly haunted expression.

Chay blinks and tentatively lays his fingers against Kim's cheek. "Kim?"

Kim's eyes snap to him, but still don't quite see him. he stays looking blank for a few seconds that feel like hours before saying matter-of-factly, "I've snapped."

"Kim!" Chay protests, distressed.

"It's okay," Kim says, still matter-of-fact but smiling tenderly, "better to be mad with you than without."

it takes a while to convince Kim he's not insane and that Chay's really back. Chay's not certain he fully manages it. but his death also shook loose a lot of confessions Kim normally couldn't say out loud. ("why--" Chay starts, voice cracking, "why did you say 'I'm sorry' that day?" / "You were supposed to be safe," Kim replies hoarsely, mad smile slipping for tears.) there's more clutching and clinging, this time by Chay too. both of them manage to forget they're in a bar of dead bodies until Porsche and Kinn come crashing through the door.

"Chay!" Porsche yells when he first sees him.

"Chay," Porsche pleads brokenly when he sees Chay's blood soaked shirt.

"Not mine!" Chay says quickly, and would've been given away by how fast Kim's head snaps around in any other circumstance. "See?" he says, raising his shirt to show unblemished skin, "No injury."

this does a lot to reassure Porsche, but Chay can tell Kim still thinks he's a little bit insane. Chay decides that's fine for now, because dying takes a lot out of you and apparently everyone around you too and it's unfair to expect Kim to just bounce back from him bleeding out on him, he'll work on it after a shower and dinner.

I'm not writing this AU because I only really have these two vague scenes in my head, but Chay having multiple lives making his existence in the mafia hurt more than canon's calls to me, it really does.

oh, also: in the AU source material, one of the nine-lifers has one of his lives removed and stored into a ring for safekeeping. he later gives this ring to his to-be-wife as her wedding ring. I'm not sure yet how to work that into this AU because Chay's contact with magic and other magicals would be slim to none in this, but please picture how this would absolutely wreck Kim, because there's nothing Kim wants more than to safeguard Chay but as far as he's concerned, he's already failed Chay in that regard twice. 😈

this is a nothing complaint but i do get kinda tired of the lilo and stitch merchandise. sure you could draw a napping stitch holding scrump but he has his own little stuffed turtle that he pulls out from under his pillow after he had a bad dream in lilo and stitch 2: stitch has a glitch.

I know I'm not like the only person who talked about the "why are people drawing stede like a skinny little twig stop it" phenomenon but my posts ab it did get some traction, and I still can't get over someone interpreting that as those posts (in general, not just mine) saying "draw stede fat." like seriously wtf. there are more than 3 body types (skinny fat muscle). like actually human bodies are incredibly diverse and not everyone will fit into skinny fat muscle as distinct and separate silos with no overlap. I'm just like... look at reference images. please fucking look at reference images. you don't have to see me go "stede's not a twink" and immediately run wildly in the opposite direction. I'm so tired. does anyone have a singular ounce of reading comprehension to spare please the tumblrinas are dying

Some more instances of adding a scene just to have it without any of the context:

Nani listening in on Lilo making her wish. It's still there because the whole "Send me the nicest angel you have.." *hard cut to Stitch looking demonic* is an ICONIC scene. But the next Nani and Lilo scene we have after this is them at the dog shelter. BECAUSE NANI WAS LISTENING TO LILO! She knew getting a pet would be one more thing to worry about, but she did it because Lilo needed it! (We even see Cobra give her a silent 🤨'Seriously? Is now the best time for this?' Look when he learns about it)

This is one more way to subtlety show how much Nani is willing to sacrifice to keep Lilo happy.

But in the REMAKE, the neighbour takes Lilo to the shelter and gets her Stitch(They also removed the whole Official Adoption Papers moment) This basically turns Nani listening in on Lilo to "Oh no, the poor girl.. eh, I'm sure she'll be fine."

Not exactly the same as a scene without it's context, but they also NEVER address Scrump. Lilo just has a 'weird looking doll' they removed the moment where Lilo shows her to the other girls. This scene is significant because SCRUMP IS A METAPHOR FOR LILO!! Compared to the other girls Barbie-esque dolls, Scrump is weird, and different, and can't help the way she is. This is a perfect comparison to Lilo with her classmates. This is also why Lilo throws Scrump on the ground, but then comes back a moment later and hugs her like she's the most precious thing in the world.

She got frustrated at Scrump for being different, but couldn't bring herself to abandon her. It's the movies first instance of 'No one gets left behind, or forgotten'. It's the writers setting it up before they've TOLD us the significance of it. A perfect example of "Show, don't tell"

In the remake, Scrump is just THERE. She's little more than set-dressing, so they can say 'LOOK LOOK! Just like the original!'

(Honestly, if there wasn't the OG movie, I'd assume Scrump was just one of those mass-produced 'Designed to be unappealing on purpose' like the Fuggler or Uglydolls toy-line)

While it's a common issue with all the more recent remakes (The Little Mermaid, Snow White, etc) one of the most frustrating parts of the Lilo and Stitch remake is how carelessly it lifts scenes and dialogue word-for-word from the original script. And without any of the original context attached, what they've carried over from the animated film completely clashes with the things that the new writers have changed or removed.

They still keep the setup of the mosquito joke, with Pleakley explaining that they're an "endangered species" so they can't just destroy Earth.

But unlike the original, this doesn't lead to a running gag - Pleakley never sees or even mentions mosquitos again for the rest of the film - nor do we get the final payoff where it's revealed Cobra was the one who told them this (he has no prior contact with the aliens at all in this version).

So now there's no actual reason for how or why the aliens think this, and one of the best jokes from the original film is reduced to a weird throwaway line that makes no sense.

They also keep the scene where Stitch and Jumba destroy Lilo and Nani's house. Only now, it has completely different circumstances leading up to it, and the consequences this incident is supposed to have are completely skipped over.

It doesn't prompt Cobra to take Lilo, nor does it lead to Lilo running away (the closest equivalent happens before this scene) or getting captured, and when seeing the destruction themselves, Nani and the others are just mildly confused at best before they go back to the issue at hand.

So instead of a genuinely devastating culmination of all the film's mishaps, the destruction of the house now serves no purpose in the story and is completely pointless.

Even the music suffers from this, like Nani singing Aloha Oe or Lilo listening to Elvis.

In the first film, these songs tied into the characters' cultural heritage, and the film's running commentary about America's modern day colonisation of Hawaii. But, this being modern Disney, the more political themes are omitted entirely from this version - certainly not helped by the fact that they didn't even bother to cast a Native Hawaiian actress as Nani - and other than playing a few of this songs, the movie downplays Elvis' prominence so much that it never even mentions him by name.

So instead of actually serving the story or themes, there's no deeper meaning or purpose whatsoever behind the songs beyond the fact they're in the animated film, and now they're just included out of obligation.

That's only a few of many, many examples (feel free to share others), but perhaps even moreso than the other Disney remakes, this one really makes you appreciate how layered and well-structured the original film was in comparison.

so whenever DDVAU comes out I screenshot everything that makes my brain itch and then send it to my friends with an explanation of why the particular bit makes me happy and I was looking through my scrumped list and I was like “oh wait, artists (@kitsuneisi and @xmaruu11 in this case) actually like knowing what people think and like about your art especially specific details maybe possible perhaps” so I’m being brave and pasting exactly what I said to my friends into here with no rewriting for the sake of keeping them as my raw thoughts. Already said I love how they’ve designed speaking over. It’s just so effortless and clear idk. (PART TWO OF THIS) - I wasn't gonna post this for a couple days but I already said he was on his way there to apologise so I decided to just post it !

Chris found it all insanely humiliating. Regardless, he showed up, flowers in hand awaiting an answer on the front porch. 

He viewed himself typically calm and collected, but right now he couldnt be. He had to fix things. He just kind of hoped at least her dad wouldnt be home. 

Bonnie answered the door, already holding an irritated expression having looked through the peep hole in the door. 

“She doesnt want you here, chris.”

“I wanna say sorry.”

She stared at him blankly, already completely over the conversation. 

“So say it.”

He took a second to gather his thoughts, his mouth opened to begin pathetically begging for forgiveness until he saw dotty approaching from behind her sister. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, moving to step next to bonnie.

“Id say hes apologising but hes taking his sweet time about it.”

“I was- nevermind. Can i come in?” his eyes darted between the two, hoping for an ounce of sympathy. 

Bonnie opened her mouth to fire another quick line but dotty nodded, opening the door wider for him. Chris gave a wide smile in relief and in thanks. 

He shuffled his shoes off by the door, careful not to drop the flowers. Dotty placed herself on one of the chairs at the kitchen table, bonnie standing close behind like a bodyguard, arms crossed. Dotty nodded towards the seat next to her when she saw chris hesitate. Before setting down, he leaned the flowers towards her. 

“These are for- well both of you.”

Dotty leaned down and held them closer to sniff at them.

“How sweet” bonnie sarcastically responded, earning a harsh look from dotty. She knew he was trying his best.

“I really am sorry. I was wrong and i definitely shouldnt have yelled.” his face flushed from embarrassment as he spoke, slowly placing himself beside dotty. 

Dotty had one boundary, bonnie had to forgive him too. If she wasnt convinced then dotty wouldnt let herself be. Regardless, she was pretty convinced already. she could tell he was hating every second but persisted anyways, the embarrassment wasnt due to a lack of genuinity in his apology. 

She looked over to bonnie who showed no sign of giving in until she saw dottys hopeful expression. 

She sighed, “thats it?”

“No uh- i thought that if you wanted i could stay here with dotty ‘n take care of her while you go out.” he spoke far too quickly out of anxiousness. “you have fun doing whatever and ill keep her safe.”

“You think i-”

“No you keep her safe fine i just- i know you always do your best for her. I didnt mean to say that you didnt- or dont.”

Bonnie felt more sympathy for him, he cared for dottys safety as much as she did. He just didnt understand the situation as much as she did. 

Chris pulled out a wad of scrumped notes of cash, “i wanna pay too. You can do whatever you want ‘n i promise ill keep her safe while youre gone. If dotty wants me here of course.”

Dotty was convinced probably way too quickly, smiling and wide eyed staring at chris happy with his apology. She looked back over to bonnie awaiting for her response. 

“Keep the money, kid. But you have a single miniscule problem and you call me. No trying to deal with it yourself. you call.”

He nodded in agreement, desperate to show his seriousness. Dottys smile grew, passing over the flowers to her sister as she stood up and grabbed chris to tug him out the chair, dragging him to her room. They cuddled themselves to sleep from the relief of finally spending time together after the first full 24 hours theyd spent apart from each other.

Off the top of my head:

They tone down a lot of Lilo's eccentricities/'weirdness' (affectionate) like gone is the amateur voodoo, the reason for Scrump's surgery, taking pictures of tourists, etc.

The other little girls teasing Lilo is framed more as a result of not knowing how to talk to her because her parents have died, than a response to Lilo's quirks. (I guess to make them more sympathetic? It doesn't really matter though because they aren't in the movie that much.)

Nani and Lilo now have a really kind/caring next door neighbor (David's mom? Aunt? Grandma???? Never specified but they're related somehow, I assume, since he lives there too.) So now Nani and Lilo have a convenient source of support which begs the question: why does Nani not lean on her more for help? (They have a dumb rationale for this--I'll get there.)

Cobra is not the social worker, he's just straight up a CIA agent.

Instead the social worker is a brand new character who is also kind and supportive and ultimately convinces Nani to give Lilo up (and the movie wants us to know that this is a GOOD thing*)

*I want to be clear that like. I am not advocating for negative portrayals of foster care/social workers, obviously. XD It's just that in the context of this movie specifically, 'the state separates a Hawaiian family for the greater good' is not the happy ending they THINK it is

Nani now has an additional tragic backstory element in that she was this really bright, promising young woman with dreams of going to college to major in marine biology but all of that had to be tossed aside in order to care for Lilo.

Nani overhears Lilo's wish for a friend (just like in the original) but then DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT. The NEIGHBOR is the one who takes Lilo to the animal shelter and suggests getting a pet. Nani even argues with her about it after the fact!

Nani, in response to Lilo reminding her of THE FAMOUS LINE FROM THE ORIGINAL AND YA KNOW, THE THEME OF THE FILM, 'Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten': That sounds nice but that's not reality!

No Gantu, because they didn't have the budget for him.

Pleakly and Jumba have a device that lets them morph into two human guys and they remain that way for most of the movie because again, budget.

Jumba is the primary bad guy. He's arrested again at the end/doesn't join their little family unit.

After the incident where Stitch nearly drowns Lilo, the social worker convinces Nani that it's best for her to give Lilo up. Nani agrees.

Therefore the most moving and nuanced scene in the original movie--when Nani sings "Aloha Oe" to Lilo--is fundamentally changed. Nani still hasn't told Lilo that they're being separated (BY CHOICE) and it's Lilo who asks Nani to sing the song, seemingly motivated by nothing. At least, nothing pertaining to the original context.

(Context that is IMPORTANT to the MOVIE ABOUT A HAWAIIAN FAMILY BEING SEPARATED BY AN AGENT OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, SINGING "ALOHA OE", ORIGINALLY COMPOSED BY QUEEN LIL'UOKALANI, NOW VIEWED AS A FAREWELL TO HER COUNTRY AND PEOPLE AFTER BEING DEPOSED AS MONARCH OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS BY THE US GOVERNMENT)

Nani isn't really fighting to keep Lilo because she like. Wants to care for Lilo, and understands what she needs emotionally--the movie frames Nani's prolonged refusal to seek help and support as a misguided sense of responsibility.

(That isn't an interpretation, she tells Lilo outright that it's her responsibility to look after her because they're family. And then another character is like, 'Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind...but that also means not leaving yourself behind.' Again, not an interpretation, that's the text of the film.)

So Lilo ends up with the neighbor and Nani goes to college but it's TOTALLY OKAY because she has an alien portal device that lets her come visit Lilo so it's FIIIIIIIINE that the state convinced Nani to separate the two of them TOTALLY FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE.

Oh and Lilo doesn't formally adopt Stitch--I guess because they felt he's sentient enough to make the 'I bought him!' thing uncomfortable??? I don't know. He's a cartoon alien dog! Do we also feel that Shaggy owning Scooby is bad??? ....I weep at the current state of media literacy.

Another change that just annoys me: They keep the 'Stitch plays the record through his mouth' bit, but when Lilo shows Nani, they have Nani get distracted every time he opens his mouth, I guess because if Nani had seen it, that would break the suspension of disbelief that she's buying his 'earth dog' act?

In conclusion: Neither Nani or Lilo really wants to be here, so the movie simply spins its wheels, putting off the inevitable, easy solution of listening to the nice neighbor and social worker, totally undermining the point of the original.

(And I've already seen this attitude in online spaces of people seeing this new movie and being like, 'wow! Nani was wrong/selfish in the original movie for keeping the two of them together and it's not FAIR to burden her with motherhood and Lilo is unsafe and--' AAAAAGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!)

Lilo & Stitch Beach House to finally become a real Lego set in 2025

Nearly five years after a Lego Ideas product idea for the Pelekai residence to be made into a Lego set was put forward, it looks like Lilo & Stitch fans will finally get to recreate Lilo and Nani's iconic house in Lego form!

Back in 2020, a Lilo & Stitch and Lego fan known as ItsABricksLife626 put forward a product idea on Lego Ideas to have a Lilo & Stitch set based on the iconic Pelekai house from the franchise to be made, with minifigures of the main 'ohana of Lilo, Stitch, Nani, Jumba, and Pleakley along with David and Cobra Bubbles included. The idea was able to garner the required 10,000 supporters in just under two years for The Lego Group to review it, and it was included in the second 2022 Lego Ideas review. However, it was decided that they would not produce a set based on the idea, disappointing many Lilo & Stitch and Lego fans who wanted more than just the Stitch minifigure from a Lego Disney Minifigures series in 2016.

Since the rejection, however, Lego and Disney did begin giving Stitch some more representation. This has so far included a four-armed Stitch minifigure as part of another Lego Disney Minifigures series in 2023, a Lego BrickHeadz model of Stitch (40674 Stitch) in February 2024, and a somewhat posable Stitch model (43249 Stitch) in March 2024. Lilo Pelekai would finally get her first minifigure through a different Disney-themed Lego Ideas set (21352 Magic of Disney) released in October 2024. Nevertheless, fans were still left waiting for a full-fledged Lilo & Stitch Lego set that truly captured the film and franchise, not just the popular alien.

But now, with a live-action adaptation on the way, it seems that fans will finally get the Lilo & Stitch Lego set they've been waiting for.

As shared by Brick Fanatics, Instagram user and Lego fan fateful_04 posted on January 2, 2025, a description sourced from a B2B website that a new Lego Disney set based on the Pelekai residence, 43268 Lilo and Stitch Beach House, will be releasing on March 1, 2025 for US$89.99. A couple days later, as shared by BrickFanz.com, German retailer Rofu posted a product listing for the set in question on their website, confirming the set's existence. The retailer has since taken down the webpage, since The Lego Group has not officially announced the set yet, but the page has already been archived on the Wayback Machine.

The set, which contains 834 pieces and is recommended for ages 9 and older, will feature pieces allowing Lego builders to construct the Pelekais' house. The set will also include a miniature Red One police cruiser, two surfboard pieces, a Scrump doll piece, a record player piece, a pickle jar piece (representing Lilo's attempts at punishing her hula classmates in the original film), a ukulele piece, and five minifigures: Lilo Pelekai, Stitch, Nani Pelekai, David Kawena, and Cobra Bubbles. Unfortunately, Dr. Jumba Jookiba and Agent Wendy Pleakley are not included, likely due to their unorthodox designs (Jumba's husky frame and Pleakley's very slim body and three legs) being difficult to easily translate to minifigure form without creating new molds.

It may have taken the upcoming release of a live-action remake for this to happen, but it's welcoming to see that fans of our beloved 'ohana will soon recreate an iconic house in the form of plastic toy bricks.

One more thing, it has been rumored since December that there will be a Lego model set of Angel coming in Summer 2025 to complement the already-released Stitch model. 43249 Angel will supposedly retail for $59.99.

TDF DAYS 7 8 9 (July 5 6 7)

I keep forgetting to post lol.

I have also generally forgotten the order in which I did things...

I combed and spun some hampshire. It seems I still have the damaged hampshire in my wool bag. Thought I'd taken it out... thing is, it's totally usable...just that the staple length has broken and so instead of 7 inches it was more like 2. That tells me it will continue to degrade as a knit fabric. So it's probably only suitable for stuffing or things that I want to fall apart. I also combed some that wasn't damaged--thats the pinkish yarn here. (I damaged the first batch of this wool when I was washing it by cooking it for 2 days trying to get the stains out. I have since embraced them and just washed the wool normally).

Carded some of the shetland x clun forest as well. Wanted to see how it held up carded--much easier than the first time. Not sure what I did different except that it's dyed vs undyed wool, and that can mean textural differences. Idk. I'm knitting it into a square to see how it looks.

Today I spun this. I made these whorl beads (some kind of bake clay I found in a bag of beads I got at goodwill. They are coming in very handy ! I dont usually use beads but they help a lot.

This is what it spun up into. 4 grams for 17 yards/meters lol. It's so dense !! It actually would make a good warm shawl carded, and a beautiful fine shawl if combed I think.

Anyway, that's everything for the past couple days, other than I scrumped some plums that I can't eat and made a small rhubarb cake that I also can't eat. Truth be told I really got into the groove in my minecraft world recently and my spinning is suffering for it lol. It's fine though, I always need multiple creative outlets, and I switch between them.

Seeing as someone fell on the sword to watch the live action lilo and stitch and give a review; I'm genuinely not surprised that it's ass. Coming from someone who has the original movie memorized from start to finish; discovering that it lacks the love and care isn't shocking, i genuinely knew it was going to tank from the beginning - as most of us were i'm sure - honestly they just wanted another excuse to market stitch on everything bc everyone loves that little blue alien dog (even though they can't tell me what kind of animal he keeps under his pillow for when he has a nightmare and needs to cuddle a little critter).

this is all to say disney wants to make money, they'll put out slop to do it, and hope it tugs on heart strings enough to get you to view it.

On top of that, don't support disney as it is. they're zionist.
